Abstract:In this paper we study the existence of closed convex hypersurfaces in the Euclidean space Rn+1 such that a Weingarten curvature, regarded as a function of their unit normal, is equal to a given positive function on the unit sphere Sn. Two classical problems of this type, namely the Christoffel problem [6] and the Minkowski problem [16], which address respectively the cases of harmonic and Gauss curvature, were completely solved in the 1970’s [7,9,17]. Besides the harmonic and Gauss curvatures, the most interesting Weingarten curvatures are probably the mean curvature, or more generally the k-curvatures (1 ≤ k ≤ n)

Abstract:Convex optimization is a vibrant and successful area due to the existence of a variety of efficient algorithms that leverage the rich structure provided by convexity. Convexity of a smooth set or a function in a Euclidean space is defined by how it interacts with the standard differential structure in this space -- the Hessian of a convex function has to be positive semi-definite everywhere. However, in recent years, there is a growing demand to understand non-convexity and develop computational methods to optimize non-convex functions. Intriguingly, there is a type of non-convexity that disappears once one introduces a suitable differentiable structure and redefines convexity with respect to the straight lines, or {\em geodesics}, with respect to this structure. Such convexity is referred to as {\em geodesic convexity}. Interest in studying it arises due to recent reformulations of some non-convex problems as geodesically convex optimization problems over geodesically convex sets. Geodesics on manifolds have been extensively studied in various branches of Mathematics and Physics. However, unlike convex optimization, understanding geodesics and geodesic convexity from a computational point of view largely remains a mystery. The goal of this exposition is to introduce the first part of geodesic convex optimization -- geodesic convexity -- in a self-contained manner. We first present a variety of notions from differential and Riemannian geometry such as differentiation on manifolds, geodesics, and then introduce geodesic convexity. We conclude by showing that certain non-convex optimization problems such as computing the Brascamp-Lieb constant and the operator scaling problem have geodesically convex formulations.

Abstract:Let A be a nonempty closed subset (resp. nonempty bounded closed subset) of a metric space (X,d) and x∈X∖A. The nearest point problem (resp. the farthest point problem) w.r.t. x considered here is to find a point a0∈A such that d(x,a0)=inf{d(x,a):a∈A} (resp. d(x,a0)=sup{d(x,a):a∈A}). We study the well posedness of nearest point problems and farthest point problems in geodesic spaces. We show that if X is a space of curvature bounded below then the complement of the set of all points x∈X for which the nearest point problem (resp. the farthest point problem) w.r.t. x is well posed is σ-porous in X∖A. Our results extend and/or improve some recent results about proximinality in geodesic spaces as well as the corresponding ones previously obtained in uniformly convex Banach spaces. In particular, the result regarding the nearest point problem answers affirmatively an open problem proposed by Kaewcharoen and Kirk [A. Kaewcharoen, W.A. Kirk, Proximinality in geodesic spaces, Abstr. Appl. Anal. 2006 (2006) 1–10].

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Optimization, Volume 34, Issue 1, Page 366-388, March 2024. Differentiable structure ensures that many of the basics of classical convex analysis extend naturally from Euclidean space to Riemannian manifolds. Without such structure, however, extensions are more challenging. Nonetheless, in Alexandrov spaces with curvature bounded above (but possibly positive), we develop several basic building blocks. We define subgradients via projection and the normal cone, prove their existence, and relate them to the classical affine minorant property. Then, in what amounts to a simple calculus or duality result, we develop a necessary optimality condition for minimizing the sum of two convex functions.

Abstract:We make a detailed study of the relation of a euclidean convex region $\Omega \subset \mathbb C$ to $\mathrm{Dome} (\Omega)$. The dome is the relative boundary, in the upper halfspace model of hyperbolic space, of the hyperbolic convex hull of the complement of $\Omega$. The first result is to prove that the nearest point retraction $r: \Omega \to \mathrm{Dome} (\Omega)$ is 2-quasiconformal. The second is to establish precise estimates of the distortion of $r$ near $\partial \Omega$.
Representation of convex geometries of convex dimension 3 by spheres

Abstract:A convex geometry is a closure system satisfying the anti-exchange property. This paper, following the work of Adaricheva and Bolat (2019) and the Polymath REU (2020), continues to investigate representations of convex geometries with small convex dimension by convex shapes on the plane and in spaces of higher dimension. In particular, we answer in the negative the question raised by Polymath REU (2020): whether every convex geometry of $cdim=3$ is representable by the circles on the plane. We show there are geometries of $cdim=3$ that cannot be represented by spheres in any $\mathbb{R}^k$, and this connects to posets not representable by spheres from the paper of Felsner, Fishburn and Trotter (1999). On the positive side, we use the result of Kincses (2015) to show that every finite poset is an ellipsoid order.

Abstract:The equidistant set of two nonempty subsets $K$ and $L$ in the Euclidean plane is a set all of whose points have the same distance from $K$ and $L$. Since the classical conics can be also given in this way, equidistant sets can be considered as a kind of their generalizations: $K$ and $L$ are called the focal sets. In their paper \cite{PS} the authors posed the problem of the characterization of closed subsets in the Euclidean plane that can be realized as the equidistant set of two connected disjoint closed sets. We prove that any convex closed planar curve can be given as an equidistant set, i.e. the set of equidistant curves contains the entire class of convex closed planar curves. In this sense the equidistancy is a generalization of the convexity.
Convex Analysis at Infinity: An Introduction to Astral Space

Abstract:Not all convex functions on $\mathbb{R}^n$ have finite minimizers; some can only be minimized by a sequence as it heads to infinity. In this work, we aim to develop a theory for understanding such minimizers at infinity. We study astral space, a compact extension of $\mathbb{R}^n$ to which such points at infinity have been added. Astral space is constructed to be as small as possible while still ensuring that all linear functions can be continuously extended to the new space. Although astral space includes all of $\mathbb{R}^n$, it is not a vector space, nor even a metric space. However, it is sufficiently well-structured to allow useful and meaningful extensions of concepts of convexity, conjugacy, and subdifferentials. We develop these concepts and analyze various properties of convex functions on astral space, including the detailed structure of their minimizers, exact characterizations of continuity, and convergence of descent algorithms.

Abstract:Given an affine variety X and a finite dimensional vector space of regular functions L on X, we associate a convex body to (X, L) such that its volume is responsible for the number of solutions of a generic system of functions from L. This is a far reaching generalization of usual theory of Newton polytopes (which is concerned with toric varieties). As applications we give new, simple and transparent proofs of some well-known theorems in both algebraic geometry (e.g. Hodge Index Theorem) and convex geometry (e.g. Alexandrov-Fenchel inequality). Our main tools are classical Hilbert theory on degree of subvarieties of a projective space (in algebraic geometry) and Brunn-Minkowski inequality (in convex geometric).

A note on faces of convex sets

Abstract:The faces of a convex set owe their relevance to an interplay between convexity and topology that is systematically studied in the work of Rockafellar. Infinite-dimensional convex sets are excluded from this theory as their relative interiors may be empty. Shirokov and the present author answered this issue by proving that every point in a convex set lies in the relative algebraic interior of the face it generates. This theorem is proved here in a simpler way, connecting ideas scattered throughout the literature. This article summarizes and develops methods for faces and their relative algebraic interiors and applies them to spaces of probability measures.

Abstract:Suppose that the surfaces K0 and Kr are the boundaries of two convex, complete, connected C^2 bodies in R^3. Assume further that the (Euclidean) distance between any point x in Kr and K0 is always r (r > 0). For x in Kr, let {\Pi}(x) denote the nearest point to x in K0. We show that the projection {\Pi} preserves geodesics in these surfaces if and only if both surfaces are concentric spheres or co-axial round cylinders. This is optimal in the sense that the main step to establish this result is false for C^{1,1} surfaces. Finally, we give a non-trivial example of a geodesic preserving projection of two C^2 non-constant distance surfaces. The question whether for any C^2 convex surface S0, there is a surface S whose projection to S0 preserves geodesics is open.

Abstract:Variational analysis presents a unified theory encompassing in particular both smoothness and convexity. In a Euclidean space, convex sets and smooth manifolds both have straightforward local geometry. However, in the most basic hybrid case of feasible regions consisting of pre-images of convex sets under maps that are once (but not necessarily twice) continuously differentiable, the geometry is less transparent. We define a new approximate convexity property, that holds both for such feasible regions and also for all prox-regular sets. This new property requires that nearby points can always be joined by smooth feasible paths that are almost straight. In particular, in the terminology of real algebraic geometry, such feasible regions are locally normally embedded in the Euclidean space.

Abstract:The higher-rank numerical range is a convex compact set generalizing the classical numerical range of a square complex matrix, first appearing in the study of quantum error correction. We will discuss some of the real algebraic and convex geometry of these sets, including a generalization of Kippenhahn's theorem, and describe an algorithm to explicitly calculate the higher-rank numerical range of a given matrix.

Abstract:Let $K\subseteq{\mathbb R}^n$ be a convex semialgebraic set. The semidefinite extension degree ${\mathrm{sxdeg}}(K)$ of $K$ is the smallest number $d$ such that $K$ is a linear image of an intersection of finitely many spectrahedra, each of which is described by a linear matrix inequality of size $\le d$. This invariant can be considered to be a measure for the intrinsic complexity of semidefinite optimization over the set $K$. For an arbitrary semialgebraic set $S\subseteq{\mathbb R}^n$ of dimension one, our main result states that the closed convex hull $K$ of $S$ satisfies ${\mathrm{sxdeg}}(K)\le1+\lfloor\frac n2\rfloor$. This bound is best possible in several ways. Before, the result was known for $n=2$, and also for general $n$ in the case where $S$ is a monomial curve.

Abstract:Let $V$ be a finite nonempty set. A transit function is a map $R:V\times V\rightarrow 2^V$ such that $R(u,u)=\{u\}$, $R(u,v)=R(v,u)$ and $u\in R(u,v)$ hold for every $u,v\in V$. A set $K\subseteq V$ is $R$-convex if $R(u,v)\subset K$ for every $u,v\in K$ and all $R$-convex subsets of $V$ form a convexity $\mathcal{C}_R$. We consider Minkowski-Krein-Milman property that every $R$-convex set $K$ in a convexity $\mathcal{C}_R$ is the convex hull of the set of extreme points of $K$ from axiomatic point of view and present a characterization of it. Later we consider several well-known transit functions on graphs and present the use of the mentioned characterizations on them.

Abstract:We consider the problem of optimal control design for navigation on off-road terrain. We use a traversability measure to characterize the difficulty of navigation on off-road terrain. The traversability measure captures terrain properties essential for navigation, such as elevation maps, roughness, slope, and texture. The terrain with the presence or absence of obstacles becomes a particular case of the proposed traversability measure. We provide a convex formulation to the off-road navigation problem by lifting the problem to the density space using the linear Perron-Frobenius (P-F) operator. The convex formulation leads to an infinite-dimensional optimal navigation problem for control synthesis. We construct the finite-dimensional approximation of the optimization problem using data. We use a computational framework based on the data-driven approximation of the Koopman operator. This makes the proposed approach data-driven and applicable to cases where an explicit system model is unavailable. Finally, we apply the proposed navigation framework with single integrator dynamics and Dubin's car model.
