Abstract:In this paper, we give a symplectic proof of the Horn inequalities on eigenvalues of a sum of two Hermitian matrices with given spectra. Our method is a combination of tropical calculus for matrix eigenvalues, combinatorics of planar networks, and estimates for the Liouville volume. As a corollary, we give a tropical description of the Duistermaat-Heckman measure on the Horn polytope.

Abstract:One version of Horn's problem asks for which λ,μ,ν does Hλ+Hμ+Hν=0 have solutions, where Hλ,μ,ν are Hermitian matrices with spectra λ,μ,ν. This turns out to be a moment map condition in Hamiltonian geometry. Many of the results around Horn's problem proven with great effort “by hand” are in fact simple consequences of the modern machinery of symplectic geometry, and the subtler ones provable via the connection to geometric invariant theory. We give an overview of this theory (which was not available to Horn), including all definitions, and how it can be used in linear algebra.

Abstract:The saturation theorem of [Knutson-Tao '99] concerns the nonvanishing of Littlewood-Richardson coefficients. In combination with work of [Klyachko '98], it implies [Horn '62]'s conjecture about eigenvalues of sums of Hermitian matrices. This eigenvalue problem has a generalization [Friedland '00] to majorized sums of Hermitian matrices. We further illustrate the common features between these two eigenvalue problems and their connection to Schubert calculus of Grassmannians. Our main result gives a Schubert calculus interpretation of Friedland's problem, via equivariant cohomology of Grassmannians. In particular, we prove a saturation theorem for this setting. Our arguments employ the aformentioned work together with [Thomas-Yong '12].

Abstract:The Horn inequalities characterise the possible spectra of triples of $n$-by-$n$ Hermitian matrices $A+B=C$. We study integral inequalities that arise as limits of Horn inequalities as $n \to \infty$. These inequalities are parametrised by the points of an infinite-dimensional convex body, the asymptotic Horn system $\mathscr{H}$, which can be regarded as a topological closure of the countable set of Horn inequalities for all finite $n$. We prove three main results. The first shows that arbitrary points of $\mathscr{H}$ can be well approximated by specific sets of finite-dimensional Horn inequalities. The second is a quantitative result on the redundancy of the Horn inequalities in an infinite-dimensional setting. Concretely, the Horn inequalities for finite $n$ are indexed by certain sets $T^n_r$ with $1 \le r \le n-1$; we show that if $(n_k)_{k \ge 1}$ and $(r_k)_{k \ge 1}$ are any sequences such that $(r_k / n_k)_{k \ge 1}$ is a dense subset of $(0,1)$, then the Horn inequalities indexed by the sets $T^{n_k}_{r_k}$ are sufficient to imply all of the others. Our third main result shows that $\mathscr{H}$ has a remarkable self-characterisation property. Namely, membership in $\mathscr{H}$ is determined by the very inequalities corresponding to the points of $\mathscr{H}$ itself. To illuminate this phenomenon, we sketch a general theory of sets that characterise themselves in the sense that they parametrise their own membership criteria, and we consider the question of what further information would be needed in order for this self-characterisation property to determine the Horn inequalities uniquely.

Abstract:The Schur-Horn theorem is a well-known result that characterizes the relationship between the diagonal elements and eigenvalues of a symmetric (Hermitian) matrix. In this paper, we extend this theorem by exploring the eigenvalue perturbation of a symmetric (Hermitian) matrix with fixed diagonals, which is referred to as the continuity of the Schur-Horn mapping. We introduce a concept called strong Schur-Horn continuity, characterized by minimal constraints on the perturbation. We demonstrate that several categories of matrices exhibit strong Schur-Horn continuity. Leveraging this notion, along with a majorization constraint on the perturbation, we prove the Schur-Horn continuity for general symmetric (Hermitian) matrices. The Schur-Horn continuity finds applications in oblique manifold optimization related to quantum computing.

We improve a classical formula of Routh's to prove our results. Also we reconsider a theorem of Kellogg's with the generalized result.

Abstract:A hollow matrix described by a graph $G$ is a real symmetric matrix having all diagonal entries equal to zero and with the off-diagonal entries governed by the adjacencies in $G$. For a given graph $G$, the determination of all possible spectra of matrices associated with $G$ is the hollow inverse eigenvalue problem for $G$. Solutions to the hollow inverse eigenvalue problems for paths and complete bipartite graphs are presented. Results for related subproblems such as possible ordered multiplicity lists, maximum multiplicity of an eigenvalue, and minimum number of distinct eigenvalues are presented for additional families of graphs.

On the randomized Horn problem and the surface tension of hives

Abstract:Given two nonincreasing $n$-tuples of real numbers $\lambda_n$, $\mu_n$, the Horn problem asks for a description of all nonincreasing $n$-tuples of real numbers $\nu_n$ such that there exist Hermitian matrices $X_n$, $Y_n$ and $Z_n$ respectively with these spectra such that $X_n + Y_n = Z_n$. There is also a randomized version of this problem where $X_n$ and $Y_n$ are sampled uniformly at random from orbits of Hermitian matrices arising from the conjugacy action by elements of the unitary group. One then asks for a description of the probability measure of the spectrum of the sum $Z_n$. Both the original Horn problem and its randomized version have solutions using the hives introduced by Knutson and Tao. In an asymptotic sense, as $n \rightarrow \infty$, large deviations for the randomized Horn problem were given by Narayanan and Sheffield in terms of the surface tension of hives. In this paper, we provide upper and lower bounds on this surface tension function. We also obtain a closed-form expression for the total entropy of a surface tension minimizing continuum hive with boundary conditions arising from GUE eigenspectra. Finally, we give several empirical results for random hives and lozenge tilings arising from an application of the octahedron recurrence for large $n$ and a numerical approximation of the surface tension function.

Abstract:In this paper, we give the matrix version of Horn's hypergeometric function and its confluent cases. We also discuss the regions of convergence, the system of matrix differential equations of bilateral type, differential formulae and infinite summation formulae satisfied by these hypergeometric matrix functions. We also give the certain integral representation of these hypergeometric matrix functions. The study of these 23 matrix functions leads to completing the matrix generalization of Horn's list of 34 hypergeometric series.

Abstract:In this paper we report on new results relating to a conjecture regarding properties of $n\times n$, $n\leq 6$, positive definite matrices. The conjecture has been proven for $n\leq 4$ using computer-assisted sum of squares (SoS) methods for proving polynomial nonnegativity. Based on these proven cases, we report on the recent identification of a new family of matrices with the property that their diagonals majorize their spectrum. We then present new results showing that this family can extended via Kronecker composition to $n>6$ while retaining the special majorization property. We conclude with general considerations on the future of computer-assisted and AI-based proofs.

Considering Horn’s Parallel Analysis from a Random Matrix Theory Point of View

Abstract:Horn’s parallel analysis is a widely used method for assessing the number of principal components and common factors. We discuss the theoretical foundations of parallel analysis for principal components based on a covariance matrix by making use of arguments from random matrix theory. In particular, we show that (i) for the first component, parallel analysis is an inferential method equivalent to the Tracy–Widom test, (ii) its use to test high-order eigenvalues is equivalent to the use of the joint distribution of the eigenvalues, and thus should be discouraged, and (iii) a formal test for higher-order components can be obtained based on a Tracy–Widom approximation. We illustrate the performance of the two testing procedures using simulated data generated under both a principal component model and a common factors model. For the principal component model, the Tracy–Widom test performs consistently in all conditions, while parallel analysis shows unpredictable behavior for higher-order components. For the common factor model, including major and minor factors, both procedures are heuristic approaches, with variable performance. We conclude that the Tracy–Widom procedure is preferred over parallel analysis for statistically testing the number of principal components based on a covariance matrix.

Abstract:We describe multiple correlations of Jordan and Cartan spectra for any finite number of Anosov representations of a finitely generated group. This extends our previous work on correlations of length and displacement spectra for rank one convex cocompact representations. Examples include correlations of the Hilbert length spectra for convex projective structures on a closed surface as well as correlations of eigenvalue gaps and singular value gaps for Hitchin representations. We relate the correlation problem to the counting problem for Jordan and Cartan projections of an Anosov subgroup with respect to a family of carefully chosen truncated {\it hypertubes}, rather than in tubes as in our previous work. Hypertubes go to infinity in a linear subspace of directions, while tubes go to infinity in a single direction and this feature presents a novel difficulty in this higher rank correlation problem.

Horn maps of semi-parabolic Hénon maps

Abstract:We prove that horn maps associated to quadratic semi-parabolic fixed points of Hénon maps, first introduced by Bedford, Smillie, and Ueda, satisfy a weak form of the Ahlfors island property. As a consequence, two natural definitions of their Julia set (the non-normality locus of the family of iterates and the closure of the set of the repelling periodic points) coincide. As another consequence, we also prove that there exist small perturbations of semi-parabolic Hénon maps for which the Hausdorff dimension of the forward Julia set $J^+$ is arbitrarily close to 4.

Abstract:For two real symmetric matrices, their eigenvalue configuration is the arrangement of their eigenvalues on the real line. We study the problem of determining a quantifier-free necessary and sufficient condition for two real symmetric matrices to realize a given eigenvalue configuration as a generalization of Descartes' rule of signs. We exploit the combinatorial properties of our definition for eigenvalue configuration to reduce a two-polynomial root counting problem into several single-polynomial root counting problems of symmetric polynomials. We then leverage the fundamental theorem of symmetric polynomials to derive a final quantifier-free necessary and sufficient condition for two real symmetric matrices to realize a given eigenvalue configuration.

Abstract:Some puzzles which arise in matrix models with multiple cuts are presented. They are present in the smoothed eigenvalue correlators of these models. First a method is described to calculate smoothed eigenvalue correlators in random matrix models with eigenvalues distributed in a single-cut, previous known results are reproduced. The method is extended to symmetric two-cut random matrix models. The correlators are written in a form suitable for application to mesoscopic systems. Connections are made with the smooth correlators derived using the Orthogonal Polynomial (OP) method. A few interesting observations are made regarding even and odd density-density correlators and cross-over correlators in $Z_2$ symmetric random matrix models.
