Abstract:Following a technique of Galileo we compute the height on a mountain on the Moon. It is based on a simple observation that precisely on a half Moon day, the Earth, the Moon, and the Sun form the vertices of a right triangle with the Moon at the 90 degree vertex.

Abstract:The classical method for measure the Earth-Sun distance is due to Aristarchus and it is based upon the measure of the angle Moon-Earth-Sun when the Moon is exactly in quadrature. Such an angle is only 9 arcminutes smaller than 90 degrees, and it is very difficult to evaluate, being necessary to look directly towards the Sun. The distance Earth-Moon and the Earth's diameter are necessary ingredients in order to derive the value of the astronomical unit. This method requires also the knowledge of the Moon's distance and the Earth's diameter, but it can permit a more precise measurement of the involved angles.

Abstract:Although they are sometimes considered problematic to grasp by students, the concepts behind non-Euclidean geometry can be taught using astronomical images. By using photographs of the Moon taken with a smartphone through a simple telescope, we were able to introduce these concepts to high-school students and college newcomers. By recognizing different Moon geological structures within the photograph, we teach students how to calculate distances of mountain ranges or areas of craters on the Moon's surface, introducing the notions of geodesics and spherical triangles. Furthermore, students can empirically see that the correct estimations for the actual values cannot be obtained using flat geometry. Instead, by using three--dimensional curved geometry, precise estimates of lengths and areas of geological elements in the Moon can be computed with less than 4\% error. These procedures help students understand, concretely, non-Euclidean geometry concepts.

Geometric Simulation of Earth's Outgoing Radiation Viewed from a Moon-Based Platform

Abstract:Due to the characteristics of integrity, multi-angle and long period, a Moon-based platform is expected to accurately estimate Earth outgoing radiation. To evaluate this platform’s capabilities, this paper established a one-to-one mapping algorithm based on the geometric relationship and used the Goddard Earth Observing System model version 5 (GEOS-5) data as model input to simulate Earth’s outgoing radiation viewed from a Moon-based platform, so as to learn about the regularity of Earth outgoing radiation viewed from the Moon-based platform. Results show that a Moon-based platform can cover about 178° both in latitudinal and longitudinal direction in one image, including the polar regions. The changing inclination of the orbit of the Moon gives a better observation condition for high latitude regions, and the viewing zenith angle in polar regions can reach to 60°. These results indicate the simulation method can effectively support the observation of Earth’s outgoing radiation observation and lay the foundation for future research.
Beyond Elevation: New Metrics to Quantify the Relief of Mountains and Surfaces of Any Terrestrial Body

Abstract:Elevation has long been the standard for quantifying the relief of mountains and other landforms on Earth and beyond. Nevertheless, elevation has its limitations. By itself, a location's elevation reveals little about its vertical position relative to its surroundings, especially for seabed and extraterrestrial features. Furthermore, on planets and asteroids without a sea level, the zero-elevation datum is defined rather arbitrarily, making elevation values rather meaningless without also considering relative elevation differences. In light of these factors, this paper introduces new topographic measures based purely on gravity and the actual planetary surface, rather than on an arbitrary datum. Unlike elevation, the so-called datumless measures -- with the names of dominance, jut, submission, and rut -- each describe a different aspect about a location's vertical position relative to its surroundings. They can be used to objectively compare the relief of mountains and other landforms, including across different planets. The datumless measures may be of interest to planetary scientists seeking universally standardized measures of relief, Earth scientists seeking to correlate geomorphological properties with natural phenomena, as well as mountaineers and hobbyists seeking new ways to describe the wondrous landscapes of this universe.

The simplest method to measure the geocentric lunar distance: a case of citizen science

Abstract:We present the results of measuring the geocentric lunar distance using what we propose is the simplest method to achieve a precise result. Although lunar distance has been systematically measured to a precision of few millimeters using powerful lasers and retroreflectors installed on the moon by the Apollo missions, the method devised and applied here can be readily used by nonscientist citizens (e.g. amateur astronomers or students) and it requires only a good digital camera. After launching a citizen science project called the Aristarchus Campaign, intended to involve astronomy enthusiasts in scientific measurement of the Lunar Eclipse of 15 April 2014, we compiled and measured a series of pictures obtained by one of us (J.C. Figueroa). These measurements allowed us to estimate the lunar distance to a precision of 3%. We describe here how to perform the measurements and the method to calculate from them the geocentric lunar distance using only the pictures time stamps and a precise measurement of the instantaneous lunar apparent diameter. Our aim here is not to provide any improved measurement of a well-known astronomical quantity, but rather to demonstrate how the public could be engaged in scientific endeavors and how using simple instrumentation and readily available technological devices such as smartphones and digital cameras, any person can measure the local Universe as ancient astronomers did.

Abstract:Understanding telescope pointing (i.e. line of sight) is important for observing the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and astronomical objects. The Moon is a candidate astronomical source for pointing calibration. Although the visible size of the Moon (30′) is larger than that of the planets, we can frequently observe the Moon once a month with a high signal-to-noise ratio. We developed a method for performing pointing calibration using observational data from the Moon. We considered the tilts of the telescope axes as well as the encoder and collimation offsets for pointing calibration. In addition, we evaluated the effects of the nonuniformity of the brightness temperature of the Moon, which is a dominant systematic error. As a result, we successfully achieved a pointing accuracy of 3.3′. This is one order of magnitude smaller than an angular resolution of 36′. This level of accuracy competes with past achievements in other ground-based CMB experiments using observational data from the planets.

Abstract:More than 8 million range measurements from the Chang'E-1 Laser Altimeter have been used to produce a global Digital Elevation Model of the Moon with the Kriging Interpolation method.Through extracting and making grid of the moon's globe PSD data which was got by the Chang'e-1, the lunar global 0.25° × 0.25° grid model was obtained.This model regards the lunar center of mass as reference core, regards the moon's average radius 1738 km as basis reference.In order to make the Chang'E lunar model perform directly and accurately, we use Chang'E 0.25°×0. 25° lunar global grid to create lunar maps with Orthographic projection, Hammer projection and Robinson projection. By comparing and analyzing the lunar model we proposed, Clementine, ULCN2005, CLTM-s01, the model we proposed have not only obvious improvement in space coverage, model accuracy and reliability and resolution ratio but also on the two poles due to its better global samplings.

Abstract:The area of a spherical region can be easily measured by considering which sampling points of a lattice are located inside or outside the region. This point-counting technique is frequently used for measuring the Earth coverage of satellite constellations, employing a latitude-longitude lattice. This paper analyzes the numerical errors of such measurements, and shows that they could be greatly reduced if the Fibonacci lattice were used instead. The latter is a mathematical idealization of natural patterns with optimal packing, where the area represented by each point is almost identical. Using the Fibonacci lattice would reduce the root mean squared error by at least 40%. If, as is commonly the case, around a million lattice points are used, the maximum error would be an order of magnitude smaller.

Abstract:Moon-based Earth observations have attracted significant attention across many large-scale phenomena. As the only natural satellite of the Earth, and having a stable lunar surface as well as a particular orbit, Moon-based Earth observations allow the Earth to be viewed as a single point. Furthermore, in contrast with artificial satellites, the varied inclination of Moon-based observations can improve angular samplings of specific locations on Earth. However, the potential for estimating the global outgoing longwave radiation (OLR) from the Earth with such a platform has not yet been fully explored. To evaluate the possibility of calculating OLR using specific Earth observation geometry, we constructed a model to estimate Moon-based OLR measurements and investigated the potential of a Moon-based platform to acquire the necessary data to estimate global mean OLR. The primary method of our study is the discretization of the observational scope into various elements and the consequent integration of the OLR of all elements. Our results indicate that a Moon-based platform is suitable for global sampling related to the calculation of global mean OLR. By separating the geometric and anisotropic factors from the measurement calculations, we ensured that measured values include the effects of the Moon-based Earth observation geometry and the anisotropy of the scenes in the observational scope. Although our results indicate that higher measured values can be achieved if the platform is located near the center of the lunar disk, a maximum difference between locations of approximately 9 × 10−4 W m−2 indicates that the effect of location is too small to remarkably improve observation performance of the platform. In conclusion, our analysis demonstrates that a Moon-based platform has the potential to provide continuous, adequate, and long-term data for estimating global mean OLR.

Abstract:As a radiant light source within the dynamic range of most spacecraft payloads, the Moon provides an excellent reference for on-orbit radiometric calibration. This research hinges on the precise simulation of lunar spectral irradiances and Earth-based Moon observation geometry. The paper leverages the Hapke model to simulate the temporal changes in lunar spectral irradiances, utilizing datasets obtained from the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera (LROC). The research also details the transformation process from the lunar geographic coordinate system to the instantaneous projection coordinate system, thereby delineating the necessary observational geometry. The insights offered by this study have the potential to enhance future in-orbit spacecraft calibration procedures, thereby boosting the fidelity of data gathered from satellite observations.

Abstract:Abstract The lunar surface contains a wide variety of topographic shapes and features, each with different distributions and scales, and any analysis technique to objectively measure roughness must respect these qualities. Coarse‐graining is a naturally scale‐dependent filtering technique that preserves scale‐dependent symmetries and produces coarse elevation maps that gradually erase the smaller features from the original topography. In this study of the lunar surface, we present two surface variability metrics obtained from coarse‐graining lunar topography: fine elevation and coarse curvature. Both metrics are isotropic, deterministic, slope‐independent, and coordinate‐agnostic. Fine (detrended) elevation is acquired by subtracting the coarse elevation from the original topography and contains features that are smaller than the coarse‐graining length‐scale. Coarse curvature is the Laplacian of coarsened topography, and naturally quantifies the curvature at any scale and indicates whether a location is elevated or depressed relative to its neighborhood at that scale. We find that highlands and maria have distinct roughness characteristics at all length‐scales. Our topographic spectra reveal four scale‐breaks that mark characteristic shifts in surface roughness: 100, 300, 1,000, and 4,000 km. Comparing fine elevation distributions between maria and highlands, we show that maria fine elevation is biased toward smaller‐magnitude elevations and that the maria–highland discrepancies are more pronounced at larger length‐scales. We also provide local examples of selected regions to demonstrate that these metrics can successfully distinguish geological features of different length‐scales.

Abstract:The unceasing quest for a profound comprehension of the Earth system propels the continuous evolution of novel methods for Earth observation. Of these, the Lagrange points situated in the cislunar space proffer noteworthy prospects for space-based Earth observation. Although extant research predominantly centers on Moon-based Earth observation and the L1 point within the Sun-Earth system, the realm of cislunar space remains relatively unexplored. This paper scrutinizes the overarching characteristics of the L1 point within the Earth-Moon system concerning Earth observation. A pivotal enhancement is introduced through the incorporation of the halo orbit. This research comprehensively analyzes the relative motion between the halo orbiter and the Earth, achieved via orbit determination within a rotating coordinate system, followed by a transformation into the Earth coordinate system. Subsequently, numerical simulations employing ephemeris data unveil the observing geometry and Earth observation characteristics, encompassing the distribution of nadir points, viewing angles, and the spatiotemporal ground coverage. As a point of reference, we also present a case study involving a Moon-based platform. Our findings reveal that the motion of the halo orbit, perpendicular to the lunar orbital plane, results in a broader range of nadir point latitudes, which can extend beyond 42°N/S, contingent upon the orbit's size. Additionally, it manifests a more intricate latitude variation, characterized by the bimodal peaks of the proposed temporal complexity curve. The viewing angles and the spatiotemporal ground coverage closely resemble those of Moon-based platforms, with a marginal enhancement in coverage frequency for polar regions. Consequently, it can be deduced that the Earth observation characteristics of the L1 point within the Earth-Moon system bear a close resemblance to those of Moon-based platforms. Nevertheless, considering the distinct advantages of Moon-based platforms, the lunar surface remains the paramount choice, boasting the highest potential for Earth observation within cislunar space. In summation, this study demonstrates the Earth observation characteristics of the L1 point within the Earth-Moon system, emphasizing the distinctions between this and Moon-based platforms.

A Mixture of Ancient and Modern Understanding Concerning the Distance and Motion of the Moon

Abstract:Ptolemy's model of the Moon's motion implied that its distance varies by nearly a factor of two, implying that its angular size should also vary by nearly a factor of two. We present an analysis of 100 naked eye observations of the Moon's angular size obtained over 1145 days, showing regular variations of at least 3 arc minutes. Thus, ancient astronomers could have shown that a key implication of Ptolemy's model was wrong. In modern times we attribute the variation of distance of the Moon to the combined effect of the ellipticity of the Moon's orbit and the perturbing effect of the Sun on the Earth-Moon system. We show graphically how this affects the ecliptic longitudes and radial distance of the Moon. The longitude and distance "anomalies" are correlated with the Moon's phase. This is illustrated without any complex equations or geometry.

Abstract:One of the most challenging environments for accurate geoid models is in high, rugged mountain areas. Orthometric heights derived from GNSS and a geoid model can easily have errors at the decimeter level. To investigate the effect of geoid model variability on the elevations of peaks in high, rugged mountain areas, this paper is focused on the "Fourteeners" of Colorado, USA (a group of about 60 peaks that are above 14,000 feet = 4267.2 m). Airborne LiDAR data are used to determine geometric (ellipsoidal) heights, which first requires removing a hybrid geoid model, as the LiDAR data is originally provided as orthometric heights. We quantify a significant improvement when using these derived ellipsoidal heights compared with the original orthometric heights: from ± 0.074 to ± 0.054 m (RMSE), an improvement of 28%. Next, a mean geoid model is determined with a relative accuracy of ± 0.06 to 0.08 m and used as a "stand in" realization of the future, official geopotential datum of the USA, NAPGD2022. Using the LiDAR ellipsoidal heights and geoid model, elevations (and uncertainties) for each of the Fourteener summits are determined and found to be, on average, 1.6 m lower than currently published values. This is a much larger change than the 0.5 m decrease expected from the new datum shift alone. The bulk of the difference is due to the original treatments of the vertical angle, triangulation data. A reanalysis of 32 of the 60 peaks shows that the historic data were indeed too high by about 1.0 m or more. Ultimately, no peak falls below the 14,000-foot level nor are any peaks elevated above this level.

Abstract:The distribution of elevations on the moon determined by Clementine deviates strongly from a normal distribution, suggesting that several geologic processes have influenced the topography. The hypsograms for the near side and far side of the moon are distinctly different, and these differences correlate with differences in composition as determined by Apollo orbital geochemistry, Clementine global multispectral imaging, and ground-based spectroscopy. The hypsograms and compositional data indicate the presence of at least five compositional-altimetric units. The lack of fill of the South Pole-Aitken Basin by mare basalts suggests poor production efficiency of mare basalt in the mantle of this area of the moon.

Abstract:Among several methods for accurate measurements of solar diameter, there are transits at fixed almucantarat used in solar astrolabes. The almucantarat is a circle of given height. The horizon circle is the zero almucantarat, and data from four sunsets on the Tyrrenian sea are discussed. The angular diameter of the Sun is recovered with a few arcseconds accuracy using 60 fps video of sunsets.

Abstract:The Moon provides a long-term, stable, and unique location for Earth observation. Several space agencies, such as NASA, ESA, and CNSA, have conducted lunar explorations. To build a Moon-based observation station, site selection is the first step. The time coverage of Earth observation, e.g., the whole Earth disc observation or Earth-related plasmasphere and magnetosphere, the duration of sunlight coverage, and topography (i.e., slope) are the three major factors influencing site selection, especially in the Moon’s south pole region. In this study, we used the Chang’E digital elevation model (DEM) together with Earth, Moon, and Sun positions deduced from JPL ephemeris for site selection. Two craters, Faustini and Shoemaker, were chosen for the fuzzy evaluation of these three factors based on a multiple-input single-output (MISO) model during a 19-year period. The results show that the edge regions of craters and small hills, potholes, or uplifts inside craters are unsuitable for a Moon-based observation station. The south pole area, including these two craters, has relatively low time coverage of sunlight and some unevenly distributed, permanent shadow areas. This indicates a low thermal environment for radiation protection, whereas the relatively flat topography and the ability to cover a field of view several times the Earth’s radius enable observations of the plasmasphere and magnetosphere.

Abstract:The Clouds and the Earth's Radiant Energy System (CERES) is a program that measures the Earth radiation budget (ERB) from two polar orbiting satellite platforms. CERES radiometers are designed to make stable broadband measurements of scattered solar and emitted thermal radiative flux leaving Earth with an accuracy of 1% or better. Using versatile and programmable scan modes, it is also possible for every CERES instrument to view the Moon on each orbit. However, until now, it has not been possible to derive absolute measurements of lunar irradiance using CERES because the Moon's disk fills only 10% of the telescope field of view. This work presents a method of integrating CERES raster-scan data in order to obtain a measurement of the average scattered solar and emitted thermal radiance from the entire lunar disk. The technique results in excellent agreement between CERES instruments on different satellites as to lunar albedo and emitted thermal flux. The average broadband Moon albedo is measured by CERES at a value of 0.1362 (+/-2-3%) when normalized to a static lunar phase angle of 7 degrees using the U.S. Geological Survey lunar irradiance Robotic Lunar Observatory model. The method for the first time also yields very accurate measurements of the thermal irradiance emitted from the Moon. These suggest an average long-wave flux of 977 Wm(-2) (+/-2-3% at 7 degrees phase), implying an approximate mean surface temperature of around 92 degrees C. Statistical analysis on available data suggests that a CERES instrument performing monthly lunar measurements could utilize the Moon as a stability target and reduce calibration drifts to 0.3% per decade or less within an instrument's lifetime. Given the success of the technique, a solar calibration system is proposed that will allow precise tracking of an ERB instrument's optical degradation using the Sun.
