Abstract:Many interesting spectra can be constructed as Thom spectra of easily constructed bundles. Mahowald showed that $\mathit{bu}$ and $\mathit{bo}$ cannot be realized as $E_1$ Thom spectra. We use related techniques to show that $\mathit{tmf}_{(2)}$ also cannot be realized as an $E_1$ Thom spectrum.

Abstract:A Thom spectrum model for a $C_2$-equivariant analogue of integral Brown--Gitler spectra is established and shown to have a multiplicative property. The $C_2$-equivariant spectra constructed enjoy properties analogous to classical nonequivariant integral Brown--Gitler spectra and thus may prove useful for producing $C_2$-equivariant analogues of splittings of $BP \langle 1 \rangle \wedge BP \langle 1 \rangle$ and $bo \wedge bo.$

Fibrant resolutions for motivic Thom spectra

Abstract:Using the theory of framed correspondences developed by Voevodsky [24] and the machinery of framed motives introduced and developed in [6], various explicit fibrant resolutions for a motivic Thom spectrum $E$ are constructed in this paper. It is shown that the bispectrum $$M_E^{\mathbb G}(X)=(M_{E}(X),M_{E}(X)(1),M_{E}(X)(2),\ldots),$$ each term of which is a twisted $E$-framed motive of $X$, introduced in the paper, represents $X_+\wedge E$ in the category of bispectra. As a topological application, it is proved that the $E$-framed motive with finite coefficients $M_E(pt)(pt)/N$, $N>0$, of the point $pt=Spec (k)$ evaluated at $pt$ is a quasi-fibrant model of the topological $S^2$-spectrum $Re^\epsilon(E)/N$ whenever the base field $k$ is algebraically closed of characteristic zero with an embedding $\epsilon:k\hookrightarrow\mathbb C$. Furthermore, the algebraic cobordism spectrum $MGL$ is computed in terms of $\Omega$-correspondences in the sense of [15]. It is also proved that $MGL$ is represented by a bispectrum each term of which is a sequential colimit of simplicial smooth quasi-projective varieties.

Abstract:Computations involving the root invariant prompted Mahowald and Shick to develop the slogan: "the root invariant of v_n periodic homotopy is v_n torsion." While neither a proof, nor a precise statement, of this slogan appears in the literature, numerous authors have offered computational evidence in support of its fundamental idea. The root invariant is closely related to Mahowald's inverse limit description of the Tate spectrum, and computations have shown the Tate spectrum of v_n periodic cohomology theories to be v_n torsion. The purpose of this paper is to split the Tate spectrum of tmf as a wedge of suspensions of kO, providing yet another example in support of the slogan to the existing literature.

Twisted Spectra Revisited

Abstract:We recapture Douglas' framework for twisted parametrized stable homotopy theory in the language of $\infty$- categories. A twisted spectrum is essentially a section of a bundle of presentable stable $\infty$-categories whose fiber is the $\infty$-category of spectra, a perspective we refine in this work. We recover some of Douglas' results on classifications of such bundles, as well as further make precise the identification of categories of twisted spectra with module categories over Thom spectra in the pointed connected case. Furthermore, we examine subtle aspects of the functoriality which arise by virtue of being fibered over the Brauer space of the sphere spectrum. Extending beyond the scope of Douglas's work, we introduce a total category of twisted spectra over a fixed space, where we allow the twists to vary, and show that these total categories themselves satisfy the essential features of a 6-functor formalism. We also introduce an $(\infty, 2)$-category of twisted spectra, and use this framework to discuss duality theory for these type of objects.

Adams spectral sequences for non-vector-bundle Thom spectra

Abstract:When $R$ is one of the spectra $\mathit{ku}$, $\mathit{ko}$, $\mathit{tmf}$, $\mathit{MTSpin}^c$, $\mathit{MTSpin}$, or $\mathit{MTString}$, there is a standard approach to computing twisted $R$-homology groups of a space $X$ with the Adams spectral sequence, by using a change-of-rings isomorphism to simplify the $E_2$-page. This approach requires the assumption that the twist comes from a vector bundle, i.e. the twist map $X\to B\mathrm{GL}_1(R)$ factors through $B\mathrm{O}$. We show this assumption is unnecessary by working with Baker-Lazarev's Adams spectral sequence of $R$-modules and computing its $E_2$-page for a large class of twists of these spectra. We then work through two example computations motivated by anomaly cancellation for supergravity theories.

Abstract:We describe a structure on a commutative ring (pre)cyclotomic spectrum $R$ that gives rise to a (pre)cyclotomic structure on topological Hochschild homology ($THH$) relative to its underlying commutative ring spectrum. This lets us construct $TC$ relative to $R$, denoted $TC^{R}$, and we prove some descent results relating $TC^{R}$ and $TC$. We explore several examples of this structure on familiar $\mathbb{T}$-equivariant commutative ring spectra including the periodic $\mathbb{T}$-equivariant complex cobordism spectrum $MUP_{\mathbb{T}}$ and a new (connective) equivariant version of the complex cobordism spectrum $MU$.

Abstract:We prove the Gap Theorem for the spectrum of topological modular forms $\mathrm{Tmf}$. This removes a longstanding circularity in the literature, thereby confirming the computation of $\pi_\ast \mathrm{tmf}$ from over two decades ago by Hopkins and Mahowald. Our approach is crucially a modern one, developing and refining many techniques in synthetic spectra.

Abstract:In a previous paper, one of us interpreted mod 2 Dyer-Lashof operations as explicit A-module extensions between Brown-Gitler modules, and showed these A-modules can be topologically realized by finite spectra occurring as fibers of maps between 2-local dual Brown-Gitler spectra. Starting from these constructions, in this paper, we show that infinite families of these finite spectra are of chromatic type 2, with mod 2 cohomology that is free over A(1). Applications include classifying the dual Brown-Gitler spectra after localization with respect to K-theory.

Abstract:Let $\mathrm{X(n)}$ be Ravenel's Thom spectrum over $\Omega \mathrm{SU}(n)$. We say a spectrum $E$ has chromatic defect $n$ if $n$ is the smallest positive integer such that $E\otimes \mathrm{X(n)}$ is complex orientable. We compute the chromatic defect of various examples of interest: finite spectra, the Real Johnson--Wilson theories $\mathrm{ER(n)}$, the fixed points $\mathrm{EO}_n(G)$ of Morava $E$-theories with respect to a finite subgroup $G$ of the Morava stabilizer group, and the connective image of $J$ spectrum j. Having finite chromatic defect is closely related to the existence of analogues of the classical Wood splitting $\mathrm{ko}\otimes C(\eta)\simeq \mathrm{ku}$. We show that such splittings exist in quite a wide generality for fp spectra $E$. When $E$ participates in such a splitting, $E$ admits a $\mathbb Z$-indexed Adams--Novikov tower, which may be used to deduce differentials in the Adams--Novikov spectral sequence of $E$.

Even-periodic cohomology theories for twisted parametrized spectra

Abstract:We recall the notion of twisted parametrized spectra defined by Douglas and provide a sufficient condition for an $\infty$-category of twisted parametrized module spectra to be untwisted over an even-periodic $E_2$-ring. It is an easy consequence of the universal property of Thom spectra. We also investigate a genuine equivariant generalization based on the theory of $\infty$-categories internal to the $\infty$-topos of $G$-spaces for a compact Lie group $G$. We expect that our sufficient condition is satisfied in a number of gauge theoretic settings. This article is intended as a warm-up for a generalization of certain Seiberg-Witten Floer stable homotopy theory, which we look forward to.

A motivic filtration on the topological cyclic homology of commutative ring spectra

Abstract:For a prime number $p$ and a $p$-quasisyntomic commutative ring $R$, Bhatt--Morrow--Scholze defined motivic filtrations on the $p$-completions of $\mathrm{THH}(R), \mathrm{TC}^{-}(R), \mathrm{TP}(R),$ and $\mathrm{TC}(R)$, with the associated graded objects for $\mathrm{TP}(R)$ and $\mathrm{TC}(R)$ recovering the prismatic and syntomic cohomology of $R$, respectively. We give an alternate construction of these filtrations that applies also when $R$ is a well-behaved commutative ring spectrum; for example, we can take $R$ to be $\mathbb{S}$, $\mathrm{MU}$, $\mathrm{ku}$, $\mathrm{ko}$, or $\mathrm{tmf}$. We compute the mod $(p,v_1)$ syntomic cohomology of the Adams summand $\ell$ and observe that, when $p \ge 3$, the motivic spectral sequence for $V(1)_*\mathrm{TC}(\ell)$ collapses at the $\mathrm{E}_2$-page.

Abstract:We compute topological Hochschild homology of sufficiently structured forms of truncated Brown--Peterson spectra with coefficients. In particular, we compute $\mathrm{THH}_*(B\langle n\rangle ;H\mathbb{Z}_{(p)})$ for all $n$ and $\mathrm{THH}_*(B\langle 2\rangle ;M)$ for $M\in \{ k(1),k(2)\}$ where $B\langle n\rangle$ is an $E_3$ form of $BP\langle n\rangle$ for certain primes $p$. For example, this gives a computation of $\mathrm{THH}(\mathrm{taf}^{D};M)$ for $M\in \{H\mathbb{Z}_{(3)},k(1),k(1))$ where $\mathrm{taf}^{D}$ is the $E_{\infty}$ form of $BP\langle 2\rangle$ constructed by Hill--Lawson.

The homological slice spectral sequence in motivic and Real bordism

Abstract:For a motivic spectrum $E\in \mathcal{SH}(k)$, let $\Gamma(E)$ denote the global sections spectrum, where $E$ is viewed as a sheaf of spectra on $\mathrm{Sm}_k$. Voevodsky's slice filtration determines a spectral sequence converging to the homotopy groups of $\Gamma(E)$. In this paper, we introduce a spectral sequence converging instead to the mod 2 homology of $\Gamma(E)$ and study the case $E=BPGL\langle m\rangle$ for $k=\mathbb R$ in detail. We show that this spectral sequence contains the $\mathcal{A}_*$-comodule algebra $(\mathcal{A}//\mathcal{A}(m))^*$ as permanent cycles, and we determine a family of differentials interpolating between $(\mathcal{A}//\mathcal{A}(0))^*$ and $(\mathcal{A}//\mathcal{A}(m))^*$. Using this, we compute the spectral sequence completely for $m\le 3$. In the height 2 case, the Betti realization of $BPGL\langle 2\rangle$ is the $C_2$-spectrum $BP_{\mathbb R}\langle 2\rangle$, a form of which was shown by Hill and Meier to be an equivariant model for $\mathrm{tmf}_1(3)$. Our spectral sequence therefore gives a computation of the comodule algebra $H_*\mathrm{tmf}_0(3)$. As a consequence, we deduce a new ($2$-local) Wood-type splitting \[\mathrm{tmf}\wedge X\simeq \mathrm{tmf}_0(3)\] of $\mathrm{tmf}$-modules predicted by Davis and Mahowald, for $X$ a certain 10-cell complex.

Root bundles: Applications to F-theory Standard Models

Abstract:The study of vector-like spectra in 4-dimensional F-theory compactifications involves root bundles, which are important for understanding the Quadrillion F-theory Standard Models (F-theory QSMs) and their potential implications in physics. Recent studies focused on a superset of physical root bundles whose cohomologies encode the vector-like spectra for certain matter representations. It was found that more than 99.995\% of the roots in this superset for the family $B_3( \Delta_4^\circ )$ of $\mathcal{O}(10^{11})$ different F-theory QSM geometries had no vector-like exotics, indicating that this scenario is highly likely. To study the vector-like spectra, the matter curves in the F-theory QSMs were analyzed. It was found that each of them can be deformed to nodal curve that is identical across all spaces in $B_3( \Delta^\circ )$. Therefore, from studying a few nodal curves, one can probe the vector-like spectra of a large fraction of F-theory QSMs. To this end, the cohomologies of all limit roots were determined, with line bundle cohomology on rational nodal curves playing a major role. A computer algorithm was used to enumerate all limit roots and analyze the global sections of all tree-like limit roots. For the remaining circuit-like limit roots, the global sections were manually determined. These results were organized into tables, which represent -- to the best knowledge of the author -- the first arithmetic steps towards Brill-Noether theory of limit roots.

Abstract:We show that quadratic and symmetric L-theory of the integers are related by Anderson duality and show that both spectra split integrally into the L-theory of the real numbers and a generalised Eilenberg-Mac Lane spectrum. As a consequence, we obtain a corresponding splitting of the space G/Top. Finally, we prove analogous results for the genuine L-spectra recently devised for the study of Grothendieck--Witt theory.

Abstract:In \cite{PS}, for a stably framed Liouville manifold $X$ we defined a Donaldson-Fukaya category $\mathcal{F}(X;\mathbb{S})$ over the sphere spectrum, and developed an obstruction theory for lifting quasi-isomorphisms from $\mathcal{F}(X;\mathbb{Z})$ to $\mathcal{F}(X;\mathbb{S})$. Here, we define a spectral Donaldson-Fukaya category for any `graded tangential pair' $\Theta \to \Phi$ of spaces living over $BO \to BU$, whose objects are Lagrangians $L\to X$ for which the classifying maps of their tangent bundles lift to $\Theta \to \Phi$. The previous case corresponded to $\Theta = \Phi = \{\mathrm{pt}\}$. We extend our obstruction theory to this setting. The flexibility to `tune' the choice of $\Theta$ and $\Phi$ increases the range of cases in which one can kill the obstructions, with applications to bordism classes of Lagrangian embeddings in the corresponding bordism theory $\Omega^{(\Theta,\Phi),\circ}_*$. We include a self-contained discussion of when (exact) spectral Floer theory over a ring spectrum $R$ should exist, which may be of independent interest.

A note on the Thom morphism for the classifying space of certain Lie groups and gauge groups

Abstract:We give a complete description of which non-torsion generators are not in the image of the Thom morphism from complex cobordism to integral cohomology for the classifying space of exceptional Lie groups except for E_8. We then show that the Thom morphism is not surjective for the classifying space of the gauge group of a principal E_7-bundle over the four-dimensional sphere. We use the results to detect nontrivial elements in the kernel of the reduced Thom morphism for Lie groups and their classifying spaces.

Abstract:We offer a complete description of $THH(E(2))$ under the assumption that the Johnson-Wilson spectrum $E(2)$ at a chosen odd prime carries an $E_\infty$-structure. We also place $THH(E(2))$ in a cofiber sequence $E(2) \rightarrow THH(E(2))\rightarrow \overline{THH}(E(2))$ and describe $\overline{THH}(E(2))$ under the assumption that $E(2)$ is an $E_3$-ring spectrum. We state general results about the $K(i)$-local behaviour of $THH(E(n))$ for all $n$ and $0 \leq i \leq n$. In particular, we compute $K(i)_*THH(E(n))$.

A motivic spectrum representing hermitian K-theory

Abstract:We establish fundamental motivic results about hermitian K-theory without assuming that 2 is invertible on the base scheme. In particular, we prove that both quadratic and symmetric Grothendieck-Witt theory satisfy Nisnevich descent, and that symmetric Grothendieck-Witt theory further satisfies d\'evissage and A^1-invariance over a regular Noetherian base of finite Krull dimension, as well as a projective bundle formula. We use this to show that over a regular Noetherian base, symmetric Grothendieck-Witt theory is represented by a motivic E-infinity-ring spectrum, which we then show is an absolutely pure spectrum, answering a question of D\'eglise. As with algebraic K-theory, we show that over a general base, one can also construct a hermitian K-theory motivic spectrum, representing this time a suitable homotopy invariant and Karoubi-localising version of Grothendieck-Witt theory.

Abstract:In this note, we establish a vanishing result for telescopically localized $\mathrm{TR}$. More precisely, we prove that $T(k)$-local $\mathrm{TR}$ vanishes on connective $L_n^{p,f}$-acyclic $\mathbf{E}_1$-rings for every $1 \leq k \leq n$ and deduce consequences for connective Morava K-theory and the Thom spectra $y(n)$. The proof relies on the relationship between $\mathrm{TR}$ and the spectrum of curves on K-theory together with fact that algebraic K-theory preserves infinite products of additive $\infty$-categories which was recently established by Córdova Fedeli.
