Abstract:A dimer model is a quiver with faces embedded in a surface. We define and investigate notions of consistency for dimer models on general surfaces with boundary which restrict to well-studied consistency conditions in the disk and torus case. We define weak consistency in terms of the associated dimer algebra and show that it is equivalent to the absence of bad configurations on the strand diagram. In the disk and torus case, weakly consistent models are nondegenerate, meaning that every arrow is contained in a perfect matching; this is not true for general surfaces. Strong consistency is defined to require weak consistency as well as nondegeneracy. We prove that the completed dimer algebra of a weakly consistent dimer model as well as the noncompleted dimer algebra of a strongly consistent dimer model are bimodule internally 3-Calabi-Yau with respect to their boundary idempotents. As a consequence, the Gorenstein-projective module category of the completed boundary algebra of suitable dimer models categorifies the cluster algebra given by their underlying quiver. We provide additional consequences of weak and strong consistency, including that one may reduce a strongly consistent dimer model by removing digon-faces and that consistency behaves well under taking dimer submodels.

Abstract:Recent work by Forsgård indicates that not every convex lattice polygon arises as the characteristic polygon of an affine dimer or, equivalently, an admissible oriented line arrangement on the torus in general position. We begin the classification of convex lattice polygons arising as characteristic polygons of affine dimers. We present several general constructions of new affine dimers from old, and an algorithm for finding affine dimers with prescribed polygon. With these tools we prove that all lattice triangles, generalised parallelograms, and polygons of genus at most two admit an affine dimer.

Abstract:We study the dimer model for a planar bipartite graph N embedded in a disk, with boundary vertices on the boundary of the disk. Counting dimer configurations with specified boundary conditions gives a point in the totally non‐negative Grassmannian. Considering pairing probabilities for the double‐dimer model gives rise to Grassmann analogs of Rhoades and Skandera's Temperley–Lieb immanants. The same problem for the (probably novel) triple‐dimer model gives rise to the combinatorics of Kuperberg's webs and Grassmann analogs of Pylyavskyy's web immanants. This draws a connection between the square move of plabic graphs (or urban renewal of planar bipartite graphs), and Kuperberg's square reduction of webs. Our results also suggest that canonical‐like bases might be applied to the dimer model. We furthermore show that these functions on the Grassmannian are compatible with restriction to positroid varieties. Namely, our construction gives bases for the degree 2 and degree 3 components of the homogeneous coordinate ring of a positroid variety that are compatible with the cyclic group action.

Abstract:We study a model of fully-packed dimer configurations (or perfect matchings) on a bipartite periodic graph that is two-dimensional but not planar. The graph is obtained from $\mathbb Z^2$ via the addition of an extensive number of extra edges that break planarity (but not bipartiteness). We prove that, if the weight $\lambda$ of the non-planar edges is small enough, a suitably defined height function scales on large distances to the Gaussian Free Field with a $\lambda$-dependent amplitude, that coincides with the anomalous exponent of dimer-dimer correlations. Because of non-planarity, Kasteleyn's theory does not apply: the model is not integrable. Rather, we map the model to a system of interacting lattice fermions in the Luttinger universality class, which we then analyze via fermionic Renormalization Group methods.

Abstract:Dimer models are 2-dimensional combinatorial systems that have been shown to encode the gauge groups, matter content and tree-level superpotential of the world-volume quiver gauge theories obtained by placing D3-branes at the tip of a singular toric Calabi-Yau cone. In particular the dimer graph is dual to the quiver graph. However, the string theoretic explanation of this was unclear. In this paper we use mirror symmetry to shed light on this: the dimer models live on a T^2 subspace of the T^3 fiber that is involved in mirror symmetry and is wrapped by D6-branes. These D6-branes are mirror to the D3-branes at the singular point, and geometrically encode the same quiver theory on their world-volume.

Abstract:In this work we study the variational problem associated to dimer models, a class of models from integrable probability and statistical mechanics in dimension two which have been the focus of intense research efforts over the last decades. These models give rise to an infinite family of non-differentiable functionals on Lipschitz functions with gradient constraint, determined by solutions of the Dirichlet problem on compact convex polygons for a class of Monge-Ampère equations. We settle a number or outstanding open questions for this infinite class functionals. In particular we prove a complete classification of the regularity of minimizers, also known as height functions, for all dimer models for a natural class of polygonal (simply or multiply connected) domains much studied in numerical simulations and elsewhere. Our classification in particular implies that the Pokrovsky-Talapov law holds for all dimer models at a generic point on the frozen boundary and in addition shows a very strong local rigidity of dimer models which can be interpreted as a geometric universality result. Furthermore, we give a complete classification of the regularity of the associated free boundary, also known in the literature as frozen boundary or arctic curves and prove that they are all algebraic curves. The lack of differentiability of the functionals is intimately connected to the boundary behaviour of the solutions to the Monge-Ampère equations and we prove a complete classification for these, of independent interest.

All 81 crepant resolutions of a finite quotient singularity are hyperpolygon spaces

Abstract:We demonstrate that the linear quotient singularity for the exceptional subgroup G in Sp(4,C) of order 32 is isomorphic to an affine quiver variety for a 5-pointed star-shaped quiver. This allows us to construct uniformly all 81 projective crepant resolutions of the quotient singularity C4/G as hyperpolygon spaces by variation of GIT quotient, and we describe both the movable cone and the Namikawa Weyl group action via an explicit hyperplane arrangement. More generally, for the n-pointed star shaped quiver, we describe completely the birational geometry for the corresponding hyperpolygon spaces in dimension 2n - 6; for example, we show that there are 1684 projective crepant resolutions when n = 6. We also prove that the resulting affine cones are not quotient singularities for n >= 6.

A gluing operation for dimer quivers

Abstract:In this article we introduce a gluing operation on dimer models. This allows us to construct dimer quivers on arbitrary surfaces. We study how the associated dimer and boundary algebras behave under the gluing and how to determine them from the gluing components. We also use this operation to construct homogeneous dimer quivers on annuli.

Abstract:This article deals with dihedral group actions on compact Riemann surfaces and the interplay between different geometric data associated to them. First, a bijective correspondence between geometric signatures and analytic representations is obtained. Second, a refinement of a result of Bujalance, Cirre, Gamboa and Gromadzki about signature realization is provided. Finally, we apply our results to isogeny decompositions of Jacobians by Prym varieties and by elliptic curves, extending results of Carocca, Recillas and Rodríguez. In particular, we give a complete classification of Jacobians with dihedral action whose group algebra decomposition induces a decomposition into factors of the same dimension.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a projective crepant resolution of a Gorenstein affine toric variety and let $((\mathbb{C}^*)^k,f)$ be the LG-model which is the Hori-Vafa mirror dual of $X$. Let ${D}$ be a generic fiber of $f$ equipped with the restriction of the standard Liouville form on $(\mathbb{C}^*)^k$. Let $\mathcal{K}_A$ be the so-called "stringy Kähler moduli space" of $X$. We show that $\pi_1(\mathcal{K}_A)$ acts on the wrapped Fukaya category of $D$. Using results by Gammage - Shende and Zhou, this result implies that $\pi_1(\mathcal{K}_A)$ acts on $D^b(\operatorname{coh}(\partial X))$ where $\partial X$ is the toric boundary divisor of $X$. We show that the induced action of $\pi_1(\mathcal{K}_A)$ on $K_0(\operatorname{coh}(\partial X))$ may be extended in a natural way to an action on $K_0(X)$ which corresponds to a GKZ system.

All crepant resolutions of hyperpolygon spaces via their Cox rings

Abstract:We construct and enumerate all crepant resolutions of hyperpolygon spaces, a family of conical symplectic singularities arising as Nakajima quiver varieties associated to a star-shaped quiver. We provide an explicit presentation of the Cox ring of any such crepant resolution. Using techniques developed by Arzhantsev-Derenthal-Hausen-Laface we construct all crepant resolutions of the hyperpolygon spaces, including those which are not projective over the singularity. We find that the number of crepant resolutions equals the Hoşten-Morris numbers. In proving these results, we obtain a description of all complete geometric quotients associated to the classical GIT problem constructing moduli spaces of ordered points on the projective line. These moduli spaces appear as the Lagrangian subvarieties of crepant resolutions of hyperpolygon spaces fixed under the conical action.

Abstract:We extend the nonabelian Dold-Kan decomposition for simplicial groups of Carrasco and Cegarra in two ways. First, we show that the total order of the subgroups in their decomposition belongs to a family of total orders all giving rise to Dold-Kan decompositions. We exhibit a particular partial order such that the family is characterized as consisting of all total orders extending the partial order. Second, we consider symmetric-simplicial groups and show that, by using a specially chosen presentation of the category of symmetric-simplicial operators, new Dold-Kan decompositions exist which are algebraically much simpler than those of Carrasco and Cegarra in the sense that the commutator of two component subgroups lies in a single component subgroup.

Abstract:A dimer model is a quiver with faces embedded into a disk. A consistent dimer model gives rise to a strand diagram, and hence to a positroid. The Gorenstein-projective module category over the completed boundary algebra of a dimer model was shown by Pressland to categorify a cluster structure on the corresponding positroid variety. Outside of the Grassmannian case, boundary algebras of dimer models are not well understood. We give an explicit description of the boundary algebra of a consistent dimer model as a quiver with relations calculated only from the data of the decorated permutation or, equivalently, Grassmann necklace of its positroid.

Noncommutative resolutions of AS-Gorenstein isolated singularites

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate noncommutative resolutions of (generalized) AS-Gorenstein isolated singularities. Noncommutative resolutions in graded case are achieved as the graded endomorphism rings of some finitely generated graded modules, which are seldom $\mathbb{N}$-graded algebras but bounded-below $\mathbb{Z}$-graded algebras. So, the paper works on locally finite bounded-below $\mathbb{Z}$-graded algebras. We first define and study noncommutative projective schemes after Artin-Zhang, and define noncommutative quasi-projective spaces as the base spaces of noncommutative projective schemes. The equivalences between noncommutative quasi-projective spaces are proved to be induced by so-called modulo-torsion-invertible bimodules, which is in fact a Morita-like theory at the quotient category level. Based on the equivalences, we propose a definition of noncommutative resolutions of generalized AS-Gorenstein isolated singularities, and prove that such noncommutative resolutions are generalized AS regular algebras. The center of any noncommutative resolution is isomorphic to the center of the original generalized AS-Gorenstein isolated singularity. In the final part we prove that a noncommutative resolution of an AS-Gorenstein isolated singularity of dimension $d$ is given by an MCM generator $M$ if and only if $M$ is a $(d-1)$-cluster tilting module. A noncommutative version of the Bondal-Orlov conjecture is also proved to be true in dimension 2 and 3.

Dimer face polynomials in knot theory and cluster algebras

Abstract:The set of perfect matchings of a connected bipartite plane graph $G$ has the structure of a distributive lattice, as shown by Propp, where the partial order is induced by the height of a matching. In this article, our focus is the dimer face polynomial of $G$, which is the height generating function of all perfect matchings of $G$. We connect the dimer face polynomial on the one hand to knot theory, and on the other to cluster algebras. We show that certain dimer face polynomials are multivariate generalizations of Alexander polynomials of links, highlighting another combinatorial view of the Alexander polynomial. We also show that an arbitrary dimer face polynomial is an $F$-polynomial in the cluster algebra whose initial quiver is dual to the graph $G$. As a result, we recover a recent representation theoretic result of Bazier-Matte and Schiffler that connects $F$-polynomials and Alexander polynomials, albeit from a very different, dimer-based perspective. As another application of our results, we also show that all nonvanishing Plücker coordinates on open positroid varieties are cluster monomials.

Spherical objects in dimensions two and three

Abstract:This paper classifies spherical objects in various geometric settings in dimensions two and three, including both minimal and partial crepant resolutions of Kleinian singularities, as well as arbitrary flopping 3-fold contractions with only Gorenstein terminal singularities. The main result is much more general: in each such setting, we prove that all objects in the associated null category with no negative Ext groups are the image, under the action of an appropriate braid or pure braid group, of some object in the heart of a bounded t-structure. The corollary is that all objects which admit no negative Exts, and for which the self-Hom space is one dimensional, are the images of the simples. A variation on this argument goes further, and classifies all bounded t-structures. There are multiple geometric, topological and algebraic consequences, primarily to autoequivalences and stability conditions. Our main new technique also extends into representation theory, and we establish that in the derived category of a finite dimensional algebra which is silting discrete, every object with no negative Ext groups lies in the heart of a bounded t-structure. As a consequence, every semibrick complex can be completed to a simple minded collection.

On Félix-Tanré rational models for polyhedral products

Abstract:The Félix-Tanré rational model for the polyhedral product of a fibre inclusion is considered. In particular, we investigate the rational model for the polyhedral product of a pair of Lie groups corresponding to arbitrary simplicial complex and the rational homotopy group of the polyhedral product. Furthermore, it is proved that for a partial quotient $N$ associated with a toric manifold $M$, the following conditions are equivalent: (i) $N=M$. (ii) The odd-degree rational cohomology of $N$ is trivial. (iii) The torus bundle map from $N$ to the Davis-Januszkiewicz space is formalizable.

Symmetries and intrinsic vs. extrinsic properties of $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{0, n}$

Abstract:We consider the following question: How much of the combinatorial structure determining properties of $\overline{\mathcal{M}_{0, n}}$ is ``intrinsic'' and how much new information do we obtain from using properties specific to this space? Our approach is to study the effect of the $S_n$-action. Apart from being a natural action to consider, it is known that this action does not extend to other wonderful compactifications associated to the $A_{n - 2}$ hyperplane arrangement. We find the differences in intersection patterns of faces on associahedra and permutohedra which characterize the failure to extend to other compactifications and show that this is reflected by most terms of degree $\ge 2$ of the cohomology/Chow ring. Even from a combinatorial perspective, terms of degree 1 are more naturally related to geometric properties. In particular, imposing $S_n$-invariance implies that many of the log concave sequences obtained from degree 1 Hodge--Riemann relations (and all of them for $n \le 2000$) on the Chow ring of $\overline{\mathcal{M}_{0, n}}$ can be restricted to those with a special recursive structure. A conjectural result implies that this is true for all $n$. Elements of these sequences can be expressed as polynomials in quantum Littlewood--Richardson coefficients multiplied by terms such as partition components, factorials, and multinomial coefficients. After dividing by binomial coefficients, polynomials with these numbers as coefficients can be interepreted in terms of volumes or resultants. Finally, we find a connection between the geometry of $\overline{\mathcal{M}_{0, n}}$ and higher degree Hodge--Riemann relations of other rings via Toeplitz matrices.
