Abstract:Objective: Arterial stiffness is an important marker to predict cardio vascular events. Common measurement techniques to determine the condition of the aorta are limited to the acquisition of the arterial pulse wave at the extremities. The goal of this work is to enable non-invasive measurements of the aortic pulse wave velocity, instead. An additional aim is to extract further information, related to the conditions of the aorta, from the pulse wave signal instead of only its velocity. Methods: After discussing the problems of common pulse wave analysis procedures, an approach to determine the frequency response of the aorta is presented. Therefore, the aorta is modelled as an electrical equivalent circuit. To determine the specific numeric values of this system, a measurement approach is presented, which is based on non-invasive bioimpedance plethysmography measurements above the aortic arch and at the inguinal region. The conversion of the measurement results to the system parameters is realized by a digital algorithm, which is proposed in this work as well. To evaluate the approach, a study on three subjects is performed. Results: The measurement results demonstrate that the proposed approach yields realistic frequency responses. For better approximation of the aortic system function, more complex models are recommended to investigate in the future. Since this study is limited to three subjects without a ground truth, further measurements will be necessary. Significance: The proposed approach could solve problems of current methods to determine the condition of the aorta. Its application is non-invasive, harmless and easy to execute.

Abstract:Pulse wave measurements provide vital information in medical diagnosis. For this reason, a measurement system is developed for determining the transient time of the pulse wave between the heart and the ear. To detect pressure variations in the sealed ear canal, caused by the arriving pulse wave, an in-ear sensor is developed which uses heart sounds as time reference. Furthermore, for extracting the heart sounds from the pressure measurements and calculating the pulse wave transient time, a MATLAB-based algorithm is described. An embedded microcontroller based measurement board is presented, which realizes an interface between the sensor and the computer for signal processing.

Abstract:The morphology and velocity of the pulse wave in the arteries provide meaningful information about the cardiovascular system. Nowadays, the pulse wave is usually acquired using common blood pressure cuffs at the extremities. This work describes a new measurement device which detects changes in bioimpedance due to the pulse wave. The system is able to measure up to 1000 bioimpedances per second with a resolution of 24 bits. For comparison purposes, an additional synchronized photoplethysmography circuit is implemented. Initial measurements proved that the system is able to acquire the pulse wave at the forearm.

Abstract:Arterial pulse waves contain clinically useful information: their intensity varies with cardiac performance, their speed (pulse wave velocity; PWV) depends on arterial stiffness and their reflection is affected by conduit artery tone. Here we demonstrate a novel method for non-invasively assessing wave properties. The analysis was based on changes in blood flow velocity and arterial wall diameter during the cardiac cycle. Velocity and diameter were determined by tracking the movement of speckles in successive B-mode ultrasound images acquired at high temporal frequency with an ultrafast plane-wave scanner. Blood speckle was detected in the absence of contrast agents by using singular value decomposition, and it was processed by cross-correlation techniques that correct biases in ultrasound imaging velocimetry. Results obtained in the rabbit aorta were compared with a conventional analysis based on blood velocity and pressure, employing measurements obtained with an intra-arterial catheter. The catheter-based measurements had a poorer frequency response and greater lags but patterns of forward and backward travelling waves were consistent between the conventional and new methods. Errors in PWV were also similar in magnitude, although opposite in direction. Comparable reductions in wave intensity and delays in wave arrival were detected by the two methods when ventricular dysfunction was induced pharmacologically. The non-invasive method was applied to the carotid artery of a healthy human subject and gave a PWV and patterns of wave intensity that were consistent with earlier measurements. The new system may have clinical utility, for example in screening for, and monitoring of, heart failure.
Noninvasive Measurement of Regional Pulse Wave Velocity in Human Ascending Aorta with Ultrasound Imaging: an In-Vivo Feasibility Study.

Abstract:Objectives:Accurate and noninvasive techniques for measurement of local/regional pulse wave velocity (PWV), instead of global PWV, is desired for quantifying localized arterial stiffness and improving cardiovascular disease assessment. This study aimed at investigating the feasibility of regional PWV measurement in human ascending aorta in vivo using an ultrasound-based technique.Methods:Proximal ascending aortas of 76 healthy patients (23-71 years) were scanned with transthoracic echocardiography in parasternal long-axis view, and ultrasound radiofrequency data were acquired in a high temporal resolution (approximate to 404Hz). The PWV was derived from the determination of arrival times and identification of travel distances. Both PWVs in early systolic phase (PWVsf; pulse wave velocity measured using the systolic foot as characteristic time point) and late systolic phase (PWVdn; pulse wave velocity measured using the dicrotic notch as characteristic time point) were obtained.Results:The PWVsf and PWVdn were 4.581.38 and 6.51 +/- 1.90m/s, respectively, and both were correlated with age (r=0.30, P=0.02 and r=0.71, P<0.0001). The measurements were reproducible, and PWVdn showed significant correlation with aortic diameter (r=0.53, P<0.0001), relative distension (r=-0.44, P=0.0002), and local PWV derived from Bramwell-Hill equation (r=35, P=0.004). The PWV difference (PWVdn-PWVsf) reflected aortic stiffness change within cardiac cycle from early systole to late systole and was also correlated with age (r=0.50, P<0.0001).Conclusion:The feasibility of ascending aortic PWV measurement using ultrasound imaging was illustrated in vivo, suggesting the potential of the technique in characterization of regional aortic stiffness and assessment of aortic diseases.

Abstract:The measurement and analysis of the arterial pulse wave provides information about the state of vascular health. When measuring blood pressure according to Riva-Rocci, the systolic and diastolic blood pressure is measured non-invasively with an inflatable pressure cuff on the upper arm. Today's blood pressure monitors analyze the pulse wave in reference to the rising or falling cuff pressure. With the help of additional pulse wave analysis, one can determine the pulse rate and the heart rate variability. In this paper, we investigated the concept, the construction, and the limitations of ultrawideband (UWB) radar and continuous wave (CW) radar, which provide continuous and non-invasive pulse wave measurements. We integrated the sensors into a complete measurement system. We measured the pulse wave of the cuff pressure, the radar sensor (both UWB and CW), the optical sensor, and ultrasonic Doppler as a reference. We discussed the results and the sensor characteristics. The main conclusion was that the resolution of the pulse radar was too low, even with a maximum bandwidth of 10 GHz, to measure pulse waves reliably. The continuous wave radar provides promising results for a phantom if adjusted properly with phase shifts and frequency. In the future, we intend to develop a CW radar solution with frequency adaption.
In-vivo Pulse Wave Imaging for Arterial Stiffness Measurement under Normal and Pathological Conditions

Abstract:Numerous studies have identified arterial stiffening as a strong indicator of cardiovascular pathologies such as hypertension and abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA). Pulse Wave Imaging (PWI) is a novel, noninvasive ultrasound-based method to quantify regional arterial stiffness by measuring the velocity of the pulse wave that propagates along arterial walls after each left ventricular contraction. The PWI method employs 1D cross-correlation speckle tracking to compute axial incremental displacements, then tracks the position of the displacement wave in the anterior wall of the vessel to estimate pulse wave velocity (PWV). PWI has been validated on straight tube aortic phantoms and aortas of healthy humans as well as normal and AAA murine models. This paper presents and compares preliminary PWI results from normal, hypertensive, and AAA human subjects. PWV was computed in select cases from each subject category. The measured PWV values in hypertensive (N = 5) and AAA (N = 2) subjects were found to be significantly higher than in normal subjects (N = 8). In all subjects, the spatio-temporal profile and waveform morphologies of the pulse wave were generated from the displacement data for visualization and qualitative evaluation of the pulse wave propagation. While the waveforms were found to maintain roughly the same shape in normal subjects, those in the AAA and most hypertensive cases changed drastically along the imaged aortic segment, suggesting non-uniform wall mechanical properties.

Abstract:Arterial stiffness is a well-established biomarker for cardiovascular risk, especially in the case of hypertension. The progressive stages of an abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) have also been associated with varying arterial stiffness. Pulse wave imaging (PWI) is a noninvasive, ultrasound imaging-based technique that uses the pulse wave-induced arterial wall motion to map the propagation of the pulse wave and measure the regional pulse wave velocity (PWV) as an index of arterial stiffness. In this study, the clinical feasibility of PWI was evaluated in normal, hypertensive, and aneurysmal human aortas. Radiofrequency-based speckle tracking was used to estimate the pulse wave-induced displacements in the abdominal aortic walls of normal (N = 15, mean age 32.5 ± 10.2 years), hypertensive (N = 13, mean age 60.8 ± 15.8 years), and aneurysmal (N = 5, mean age 71.6 ± 11.8 years) human subjects. Linear regression of the spatio-temporal variation of the displacement waveform in the anterior aortic wall over a single cardiac cycle yielded the slope as the PWV and the coefficient of determination r2 as an approximate measure of the pulse wave propagation uniformity. The aortic PWV measurements in all normal, hypertensive, and AAA subjects were 6.03 ± 1.68, 6.69 ± 2.80, and 10.54 ± 6.52 m s−1, respectively. There was no significant difference (p = 0.15) between the PWVs of the normal and hypertensive subjects while the PWVs of the AAA subjects were significantly higher (p < 0.001) compared to those of the other two groups. Also, the average r2 in the AAA subjects was significantly lower (p < 0.001) than that in the normal and hypertensive subjects. These preliminary results suggest that the regional PWV and the pulse wave propagation uniformity (r2) obtained using PWI, in addition to the PWI images and spatio-temporal maps that provide qualitative visualization of the pulse wave, may potentially provide valuable information for the clinical characterization of aneurysms and other vascular pathologies that regionally alter the arterial wall mechanics.
Pulse wave imaging for noninvasive and quantitative measurement of arterial stiffness in vivo.

Abstract:BACKGROUND Arterial stiffening is recognized to be associated with increased cardiovascular mortality and to be a major cause of several cardiovascular complications. Pulse wave velocity (PWV) has been widely accepted to be a reliable and robust measure of arterial stiffness. In this article, the novel ultrasound-based pulse wave imaging (PWI) method is hereby proposed for visualization of the pulse wave during its propagation and for calculation of the PWV. METHODS The PWV is estimated by measuring the spatiotemporal variation of the pulse wave-induced displacement of the arterial wall within the imaged segment. The method is compared to mechanical testing on aortic phantoms in order to evaluate its reliability and accuracy, and in vivo results are presented on normal abdominal aortas (N = 11). RESULTS Good agreement was found with mechanical testing on phantoms (r(2) = 0.92), showing the reliability of the method. In vivo average PWV and Young's modulus were found to be equal to 4.4 +/- 0.6 m/s and 108 +/- 27 kPa, respectively. CONCLUSIONS Reliability and in vivo feasibility of the proposed PWI method were demonstrated in this study. Its simplicity of use and its capability of providing regional PWV render PWI a valuable tool for quantitative assessment of arterial stiffness. The utility of the method in a clinical setting has yet to be established and is part of an ongoing clinical study.
Regional measurement of arterial stiffness using Pulse Wave Imaging (PWI): Phantom validation and preliminary clinical results

Abstract:Arterial stiffness is a well-established biomarker of cardiovascular disease. The Pulse Wave Velocity (PWV) measure has been widely accepted as a surrogate for arterial stiffness. In this paper, the novel ultrasound-based, Pulse Wave Imaging method (PWI) is proposed for visualization of the pulse wave during its propagation and for calculation of the PWV in vivo in human. The PWI method is first validated in five arterial phantoms by comparing the values of elasticity obtained by PWI to those independently measured by mechanical testing. Good agreement was found with mechanical testing on phantoms (r2=0.92), showing the reliability of the method. In vivo average PWV was found to be equal to 5.6 ± 0.8 m/s in a population with no history of cardiovascular disease (n=ll, age=28.9±3.3). In this study, reliability and in vivo reproducibility of the PWI method were demonstrated.

Abstract:Pulse wave velocity (PWV) has been established as a promising biomarker in cardiovascular diagnostics, providing deep insights into vascular health and cardiovascular risk. Defined as the velocity at which the mechanical wave propagates along the arterial wall, PWV represents a useful surrogate marker for arterial vessel stiffness. PWV has garnered clinical attention, particularly in monitoring patients suffering from vascular diseases such as hypertension and diabetes mellitus. Its utility extends to preventive cardiology, aiding in identifying and stratifying cardiovascular risk. Despite the development of various measurement techniques, direct or indirect tonometry, Doppler ultrasound, oscillometric analysis, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), methodological variability and lack of standardization lead to inconsistencies in PWV assessment. In addition, PWV can be estimated through surrogate parameters, such as pulse arrival or pulse transit times, although this heterogeneity limits standardization and, therefore, its clinical use. Furthermore, confounding factors, such as variations in sympathetic tone, strongly influence PWV readings, thereby necessitating careful control during assessments. The bidirectional relationship between heart rate variability (HRV) and PWV underscores the interplay between cardiac autonomic function and vascular health, suggesting that alterations in one could directly influence the other. Future research should prioritize the standardization and increase comparability of PWV measurement techniques and explore the complex physiological variables influencing PWV. Integrating multiple physiological parameters such as PWV and HRV into algorithms based on artificial intelligence holds immense promise for advancing personalized vascular health assessments and cardiovascular care.
Natural Shear Wave Imaging in the Human Heart: Normal Values, Feasibility, and Reproducibility

Abstract:Left ventricular myocardial stiffness could offer superior quantification of cardiac systolic and diastolic function when compared to the current diagnostic tools. Shear wave elastography in combination with acoustic radiation force has been widely proposed to noninvasively assess tissue stiffness. Interestingly, shear waves can also result from intrinsic cardiac mechanical events (e.g., closure of valves) without the need for external excitation. However, it remains unknown whether these natural shear waves always occur, how reproducible they can be detected and what the normal range of shear wave propagation speed is. The present study, therefore, aimed at establishing the feasibility of detecting shear waves created after mitral valve closure (MVC) and aortic valve closure (AVC), the variability of the measurements, and at reporting the normal values of propagation velocity. Hereto, a group of 30 healthy volunteers was scanned with high-frame rate imaging (>1000 Hz) using an experimental ultrasound system transmitting a diverging wave sequence. Tissue Doppler velocity and acceleration were used to create septal color M-modes, on which the shear waves were tracked and their velocities measured. Overall, the methodology was capable of detecting the transient vibrations that spread throughout the intraventricular septum in response to the closure of the cardiac valves in 92% of the recordings. Reference velocities of 3.2±0.6 m/s at MVC and 3.5±0.6 m/s at AVC were obtained. Moreover, in order to show the diagnostic potential of this approach, two patients (one with cardiac amyloidosis and one undergoing a dobutamine stress echocardiography) were scanned with the same protocol and showed markedly higher propagation speeds: the former presented velocities of 6.6 and 5.6 m/s; the latter revealed normal propagation velocities at baseline, and largely increased during the dobutamine infusion (>15 m/s). Both cases showed values consistent with the expected changes in stiffness and cardiac loading conditions.

Abstract:Elastic properties of arteries have long been recognized as playing a major role in the cardiovascular system. However, non-invasive in vivo assessment of local arterial stiffness remains challenging and imprecise as current techniques rely on indirect estimates such as wall deformation or pulse wave velocity. Recently, Shear Wave Elastography (SWE) has been proposed to non-invasively assess the intrinsic arterial stiffness. In this study, we applied SWE in the abdominal aortas of rats while increasing blood pressure (BP) to investigate the dependence of shear wave speed with invasive arterial pressure and non-invasive arterial diameter measurements. A 15MHz linear array connected to an ultrafast ultrasonic scanner, set non-invasively, on the abdominal aorta of anesthetized rats (N=5) was used. The SWE acquisition followed by an ultrafast (UF) acquisition was repeated at different moment of the cardiac cycle to assess shear wave speed and arterial diameter variations respectively. Invasive arterial BP catheter placed in the carotid, allowed the accurate measurement of pressure responses to increasing does of phenylephrine infused via a venous catheter. The SWE acquisition coupled to the UF acquisition was repeated for different range of pressure. For normal range of BP, the shear wave speed was found to follow the aortic BP variation during a cardiac cycle. A minimum of (5.06$\pm$0.82) m/s during diastole and a maximum of (5.97$\pm$0.90) m/s during systole was measured. After injection of phenylephrine, a strong increase of shear wave speed (13.85$\pm$5.51) m/s was observed for a peak systolic arterial pressure of (190$\pm$10) mmHg. A non-linear relationship between shear wave speed and arterial BP was found. A complete non-invasive method was proposed to characterize the artery with shear wave speed combined with arterial diameter variations. Finally, the results were validated against two parameters the incremental elastic modulus and the pressure elastic modulus derived from BP and arterial diameter variations.

Abstract:Introduction: Numerous studies have shown that natural mechanical waves have the potential to assess the elastic properties of the myocardium. When the Aortic and Mitral valves close, a shear wave is produced, which provides insights into tissue stiffness. In addition, the Atrial Kick (AK) generates a wave similar to Pulse Waves (PWs) in arteries, providing another way to assess tissue stiffness. However, tissue anisotropy can also impact PW propagation, which is currently underexplored. This study aims to address this gap by investigating the impact of anisotropy on PW propagation in a phantom. Methods: Tube phantoms were created using Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA). Anisotropy was induced between two sets of two freeze-thaw cycles by stretching and twisting the material. The study first tests and validates the procedure of making helical anisotropic vessel phantoms using the shear wave imaging technique (by estimating the shear wave speed at different probe angles). Using plane wave ultrasound tomography synchronized with a peristaltic pump, 3D high frame rate imaging is performed and used to detect the 3D propagation pattern of PW for each manufactured vessel phantom. Finally, the study attempts to extract the anisotropic coefficient of the vessel using pulse wave propagation angle. Results: The Shear wave imaging results obtained for the isotropic vessel show very similar values for each probe angle. On the contrary, the results obtained for the axial anisotropy vessel show a region with a higher shear wave speed at about 0°, corresponding to the long axis of the vessel. Finally, the results obtained for the helical anisotropy depicted increasing shear wave velocity value from −20° to 20°. For the axial phantom, the wavefront of the pulse wave is perpendicular to the long axis of the vessel, while oriented for the helical anisotropic vessels phantom. The pulse wave propagation angle increased with the number of twists made during the vessel manufacturing. Discussion: The results show that anisotropy can be induced in PVA vessel phantoms by stretching and twisting the material in freeze-thaw cycles. The findings also suggest that vessel anisotropy affects pulse wave propagation angles. Estimating the pulse wave propagation angle may be interesting in characterizing tissue anisotropy in organs where such waves are naturally present.

Abstract:Pulse Wave Velocity (PWV) analysis is valuable for assessing arterial stiffness and cardiovascular health and potentially for estimating blood pressure cufflessly. However, conventional PWV analysis from two transducers spaced closely poses challenges in data management, battery life, and developing the device for continuous real-time applications together along an artery, which typically need data to be recorded at high sampling rates. Specifically, although a pulse signal consists of low-frequency components when used for applications such as determining heart rate, the pulse transit time for transducers near each other along an artery takes place in the millisecond range, typically needing a high sampling rate. To overcome this issue, in this study, we present a novel approach that leverages the Nyquist–Shannon sampling theorem and reconstruction techniques for signals produced by bioimpedance transducers closely spaced along a radial artery. Specifically, we recorded bioimpedance artery pulse signals at a low sampling rate, reducing the data size and subsequently algorithmically reconstructing these signals at a higher sampling rate. We were able to retain vital transit time information and achieved enhanced precision that is comparable to the traditional high-rate sampling method. Our research demonstrates the viability of the algorithmic method for enabling PWV analysis from low-sampling-rate data, overcoming the constraints of conventional approaches. This technique has the potential to contribute to the development of cardiovascular health monitoring and diagnosis using closely spaced wearable devices for real-time and low-resource PWV assessment, enhancing patient care and cardiovascular disease management.

Abstract:Background: The aortic stiffness has widely been reported as an independent indicator of all–cause mortality and cardiovascular diseases. Traditional methods for measuring arterial stiffness in vivo involve either invasive procedures or provide a global average estimate. An attractive alternative for noninvasive estimation of local arterial stiffness is based on pulse wave imaging (PWI), a method developed by our group [1,2,3] for regional pulse wave visualization and regional pulse wave velocity (PWV) measurement.

Abstract:The pulse-wave velocity (PWV) has been used as an indicator of vascular stiffness, which can be an early predictor of cardiovascular mortality. A noninvasive, easily applicable method for detecting the regional pulse wave (PW) may contribute as a future modality for risk assessment. The purpose of this study was to demonstrate the feasibility and reproducibility of PW imaging (PWI) during propagation along the abdominal aortic wall by acquiring electrocardiography-gated (ECG-gated) radiofrequency (rf) signals noninvasively. An abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) was induced using a CaCl2 model in order to investigate the utility of this novel method for detecting disease. The abdominal aortas of twelve normal and five CaCl2 mice were scanned at 30 MHz and electrocardiography (ECG) was acquired simultaneously. The radial wall velocities were mapped with 8000 frames/s. Propagation of the PW was demonstrated in a color-coded cine-loop format in all cases. In the normal mice, the wave propagated in linear fashion from a proximal to a distal region. However, in CaCl2 mice, multiple waves were initiated from several regions (i.e., most likely initiated from various calcified regions within the aortic wall). The regional PWV in normal aortas was 2.70 +/- 0.54 m/s (r(2)= 0.85 +/- 0.06, n = 12), which was in agreement with previous reports using conventional techniques. Although there was no statistical difference in the regional PWV between the normal and CaCl2-treated aortas (2.95 +/- 0.90 m/s (r(2)= 0.51 +/- 0.22, n = 5)), the correlation coefficient was found to be significantly lower in the CaCl2-treated aortas (p < 0.01). This state-of-the-art technique allows noninvasive mapping of vascular disease in vivo. In future clinical applications, it may contribute to the detection ofearly stages ofcardiovascular disease, whichmay decrease mortality amonghigh-risk patients.

Abstract:The measurement of the pulse wave has proven to be a vital tool in medical diagnosis. Whereby most pulse wave measurements are carried out at extremities, this work proposes a system for measuring the pulse wave and the Pulse Arrival Time (PAT) in the interior of the ear. The developed measurement device is based on a battery powered microcontroller system. The measurement device can simultaneously acquire a single channel Electrocardiogram (ECG), a dual wavelengths Photoplethysmogram (PPG), the pressure in both ears, the body core temperature, as well the subjects motion. The acquired measurement data can either be saved on a micro SD-card or can be transmitted wireless via Bluetooth or wired via USB to a host PC for further analysis. In Bluetooth communication mode the device can operate battery powered up to 8 hours. In addition to the system description, first measurements carried out with the system will be presented.

Pulse Wave Imaging Of Human Abdominal Aortas In Vivo

Abstract:Vascular diseases (e.g., abdominal aortic aneurysm or, AAA) lead to changes in the regional aortic wall mechanical properties. Pulse-Wave Imaging (PWI) was previously developed by our group to map the pulse-wave propagation along the abdominal aorta of mice in vivo. In this study, the feasibility of PWI with real-time scanning is shown in human abdominal aortas in vivo. The abdominal aortas of five normal subjects and one AAA subject were scanned. A Sonix RP system (Ultrasonix Medical Corp., Burnaby, Canada) was employed with a phased array at 3.3 MHz. The beam density of the 2-D echograms was reduced to 32 beams in order to obtain a high frame rate of 180260 Hz. The real-time scanning reduces the artifacts from respiration and transducer motion. The velocities of the aortic wall were estimated using RF-based speckle tracking. The sequences of PWI images visually depicted the propagation of the pulse wave along the aortic wall. The regional pulse-wave velocity (PWV) was measured and used to estimate the Young's modulus of the aortic wall. In healthy volunteers (n=5), the propagation was relatively uniform, with a correlation coefficient of 0.97 +/- 0.01 and a PWV of 3.73 +/- 0.19 m/s. The Young's modulus of the aortic wall was 79 +/- 10 kPa. In the aneurysmal aorta, the propagation of the pulse wave was relatively nonuniforrn with lower correlation coefficients (r=0.65). The PWV and Young's modulus of the aneurysmal aorta were both found to be higher than in the normal case. The PWI technique was successfully implemented in both normal and aneurysmal human abdominal aortas and shown to provide regional information on the mechanical properties of the aortic wall in vivo.

Abstract:Central blood pressure (CBP) has been established as a relevant indicator of cardiovascular disease. Despite its significance, CBP remains particularly challenging to measure in standard clinical practice. The objective of this study is to introduce pulse wave-based ultrasound manometry (PWUM) as a simple-to-use, non-invasive ultrasound-based method for quantitative measurement of the central pulse pressure. Arterial wall displacements are estimated using radiofrequency ultrasound signals acquired at high frame rates and the pulse pressure waveform is estimated using both the distension waveform and the local pulse wave velocity. The method was tested on the abdominal aorta of 11 healthy subjects (age 35.7 +/- 16 y.o.). PWUM pulse pressure measurements were compared to those obtained by radial applanation tonometry using a commercial system. The average intra-subject variability of the pulse pressure amplitude was found to be equal to 4.2 mmHg, demonstrating good reproducibility of the method. Excellent correlation was found between the waveforms obtained by PWUM and those obtained by tonometry in all subjects (0.94 < r < 0.98). A significant bias of 4.7 mmHg was found between PWUM and tonometry. PWUM is a highly translational method that can be easily integrated in clinical ultrasound imaging systems. It provides an estimate of the pulse pressure waveform at the imaged location, and may offer therefore the possibility to estimate the pulse pressure at different arterial sites. Future developments include the validation of the method against invasive estimates on patients, as well as its application to other large arteries.
