Abstract:We study the octahedral configurations $O_6$ of six equal cylinders touching the unit sphere. We show that the configuration $O_6$ is a local sharp maximum of the distance function. Thus it is not unlockable and, moreover, rigid.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is about the stability and unlocking possibility of the configuration \(O_6\) of six cylinders with the same radius. Specifically, the author studied the configuration of six infinitely long and non - intersecting straight cylinders in contact with the unit sphere, with particular attention to whether the \(O_6\) configuration can be "unlocked", that is, whether there is a deformation method such that the distances between all cylinders become positive. The main conclusions of the paper are: 1. **The \(O_6\) configuration is a local sharp maximum**: This means that near the \(O_6\) configuration, any small deformation will lead to a decrease in the minimum distance between the cylinders. Therefore, the \(O_6\) configuration cannot be unlocked and is rigid. 2. **The rigidity of the \(O_6\) configuration**: Any continuous deformation, as long as it does not increase the radius of the cylinders, will be reduced to an overall rotation in three - dimensional space. To prove these conclusions, the author carried out a detailed mathematical analysis, including calculating the first - order and second - order differentials, and proved that there is a six - dimensional subspace in the tangent space of the \(O_6\) configuration, along which the function \(D(m)\) decays at a quadratic rate, while in other tangent directions it decays at a linear rate. In addition, the paper also discussed the connectivity problem of the configuration space \(Z\), pointing out that the \(O_6\) configuration is an isolated point in \(Z\ mod\ SO(3)\), thus denying the possibility of a continuous transition from \(C_6\) to \(O_6\). In summary, this paper proves the stability and rigidity of the \(O_6\) configuration by strict mathematical methods and conducts an in - depth exploration of the properties of the relevant configuration space.
