Abstract:A refined approach where the wave function is gradually improved is developed in the one-dimensional (1D) large-Frohlich-polaron problem. The results for the ground-state energy, the effective mass, and the average number of virtual phonons are obtained for a wide range of the coupling constant It, and are in agreement with those of the Feynman path-integral formalism. In addition, in the weak-coupling limit, the expansions of these observables in powers of the coupling constant are exactly calculated up to the alpha 3-term. They are E=- alpha -0.06066 alpha 2-0.00844 alpha 3, m*=1+0.5 alpha +0.19194 alpha 2+0.06912 alpha 3, and N=0.5 alpha +0.12132 alpha 2+0.029540 alpha 3, which agree with the known results of the fourth-order perturbation theory.
Polaronic Effect on the Binding Energy of an Impurity with Varying Position in Parabolic Quantum Dots

Abstract:The Feynman-Haken variational path integral theory is generalized to calculate the binding energy Eb of an electron coupled simultaneously to an impurity with varing position and to a longitudinal-optical (LO) phonon field in parabolic quantum dots. Our calculations are applied to some semiconductor materials and the results for the binding energy are obtained for different confinement length R of the dot and arbitrary position of the impurity. It is shown that the polaronic correction to Eb decreases with the displacement of the impurity and increases with the confinement length of the dot. More interestingly, it is not so strong as the polaronic correction to the ground-state energy of the system, and the behaviours of their variation with R are totally different.

Abstract:In this paper, we study a form of the Holstein molecular crystal model in which the influence of lattice vibrations on the transfers of electronic excitations between neighboring sites (off-diagonal coupling) is taken into account. Using the Toyozawa Ansatz and the Lanczos algorithm, the Holstein Hamiltonian with two types of off-diagonal coupling is studied focusing on a number of analyticity issues in the ground state. For finite-sized lattices and antisymmetric coupling, a sequence of discontinuities are found in the polaron energy dispersion, the size of the ground-state phonon cloud, and the linearized von Neumann entropy used to quantify the quantum entanglement between the exciton and the phonons in the ground state. Such behavior is accompanied by a shift of the ground-state crystal momentum from zero to nonzero values as the coupling strength is increased. In the thermodynamic limit, all discontinuities associated with antisymmetric coupling vanish except the one corresponding to the initial departure of the ground-state wavevector from the Brillouin zone center. For the case of symmetric off-diagonal coupling, a smooth crossover is found to exist in all parameters regimes.

Abstract:We consider the confined Fröhlich polaron and establish an asymptotic series for the low-energy eigenvalues in negative powers of the coupling constant. The coefficients of the series are derived through a two-fold perturbation approach, involving expansions around the electron Pekar minimizer and the excitations of the quantum field.

Abstract:The effective mass of a large polaron is calculated using the extended phonon coherent state proposed in our previous paper. In the weak-coupling limit, the mass expansion obtained can reproduce the fourth-order perturbative result. Moreover, in the intermediate-coupling range, the calculated results are in good agreement with those of other approaches.

Abstract:We prove that there is a constant $\overline C\in (0,\infty)$ such that the effective mass $m(\alpha)$ of the Fröhlich Polaron satisfies $m(\alpha) \geq \overline C \alpha^4$, which is sharp according to a long-standing prediction of Landau-Pekar [19] from 1948 and of Spohn [35] from 1987. The method of proof, which demonstrates how the $\alpha^4$ divergence rate of $m(\alpha)$ appears in a natural way, is based on analyzing the Gaussian representation of the Polaron measure and that of the associated tilted Poisson point process developed in [25], together with an explicit identification of local interval process in the strong coupling limit $\alpha\to\infty$ in terms of functionals of the {\it Pekar variational formula}.}

Abstract:We study the Fröhlich polaron in the regime of strong coupling and prove the asymptotically sharp lower bound on the effective mass $m_{\mathrm{eff}}(\alpha)\geq \alpha^4 m_{\mathrm{LP}}-C\alpha^{4-\epsilon}$, where $m_{\mathrm{LP}}$ is an explicit constant. Together with the corresponding upper bound, which has been verified recently in [5], we confirm the validity of the celebrated Landau-Pekar formula [12] from 1948 for the effective mass $\underset{\alpha\rightarrow \infty}{\lim}\alpha^{-4}m_{\mathrm{eff}}(\alpha)=m_{\mathrm{LP}}$ as conjectured by Spohn [25] in 1987.

Convergence of states for polaron models in the classical limit

Abstract:We consider the quasi-classical limit of Nelson-type regularized polaron models describing a particle interacting with a quantized bosonic field. We break translation-invariance by adding an attractive external potential decaying at infinity, acting on the particle. In the strong coupling limit where the field behaves classically we prove that the model's energy quasi-minimizers strongly converge to ground states of the limiting Pekar-like non-linear model. This holds for arbitrarily small external attractive potentials, hence this binding is fully due to the interaction with the bosonic field. We use a new approach to the construction of quasi-classical measures to revisit energy convergence, and a localization method in a concentration-compactness type argument to obtain convergence of states.

Abstract:We discuss the dynamics of the formation of a Bose polaron when an impurity is injected into a weakly interacting one-dimensional Bose condensate. While for small impurity-boson couplings this process can be described within the Froehlich model as generation, emission and binding of Bogoliubov phonons, this is no longer adequate if the coupling becomes strong. To treat this regime we consider a mean-field approach beyond the Froehlich model which accounts for the backaction to the condensate, complemented with Truncated Wigner simulations to include quantum fluctuation. For the stationary polaron we find an energy-momentum relation that displays a smooth crossover from a convex to a concave dependence associated with a non-monotonous relation between impurity velocity and polaron momentum. For larger momenta the energy is a periodic function including regions of negative impurity velocity. Studying the polaron formation after turning on the impurity-boson coupling quasi adiabatically and in a sudden quench, we find a very rich scenario of dynamical regimes. Due to the build-up of an effective mass, the impurity is slowed down even if its initial velocity is below the Landau critical value. For larger initial velocities we find deceleration and even backscattering caused by emission of density waves or grey solitons and subsequent formation of stationary polaron states in different momentum sectors. In order to analyze the effect of quantum fluctuations we consider a trapped condensate to avoid 1D infrared divergencies. Using Truncated Wigner simulations in this case we show under what conditions the influence of quantum fluctuations is small.

Effective Polaron Dynamics of an Impurity Particle Interacting with a Fermi Gas

Abstract:We study the quantum dynamics of a homogeneous ideal Fermi gas coupled to an impurity particle on a three-dimensional box with periodic boundary condition. For large Fermi momentum $k_\text{F}$, we prove that the effective dynamics is generated by a Fröhlich-type polaron Hamiltonian, which linearly couples the impurity particle to an almost-bosonic excitation field. Moreover, we prove that the effective dynamics can be approximated by an explicit coupled coherent state. Our method is applicable to two relevant settings: first, an interaction coupling $\lambda=1$ and masses of order 1 for time scales of order $k_\text{F}^{-1}$; second to the case of $\lambda=k_\text{F}^{-1}$ and a heavy Fermi gas with masses of order $k_\text{F}$ for time scales of order 1.

Precision Thermodynamics of the Fermi polaron at strong coupling

Abstract:The Fermi polaron problem, which describes a mobile impurity that interacts with a spin-polarized Fermi sea, is a paradigmatic system in quantum many-body physics and has been challenging to address quantitatively in its strong coupling regime. We present the first controlled thermodynamic calculations for the Fermi polaron at strong coupling using finite-temperature auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo (AFMC) methods in the framework of the canonical ensemble. Modeled as a spin-imbalanced system, the Fermi polaron has a Monte Carlo sign problem, but we show that it is moderate over a wide range of temperatures and coupling strengths beyond the unitary limit of the BCS-BEC crossover. We calculate the contact, a quantity which measures the strength of the short-range correlations, as a function of temperature at unitarity and as a function of the coupling strength at fixed temperature and find good agreement with a variational approach based on one particle-hole excitation of the Fermi sea. We compare our results for the contact with recent experiments and find good agreement at unitarity (within error bars) but discrepancies away from unitarity on the BEC side of the crossover. We also calculate the thermal energy gap at unitarity as a function of temperature.

Abstract:The definitions of the effective mass of the composite fermion are discussed for the half-filled Landau level problem. In a recent work, Shankar and Murthy show a finite effective mass of the composite fermion by a canonical transformation while the perturbative calculation gives the logarithmic divergence of the effective mass at the Fermi surface. We will emphasize that the different definition of the effective mass has the different physical processes. The finite one could be defined for any momentum of the composite fermion while the divergence only appears at the Fermi surface. We work with the standard Halperin-Lee-Read model but in the temporal gauge. The advantage of this gauge to be employed is that the finite effective mass could be calculated in the Hartree-Fock approximation. Furthermore, it is precisely equal to the result that Shankar and Murthy obtained which is well-fit with the numerical calculation from the ground state energy analysis and a semi-classical estimation. However, if we consider the random phase approximation, one sees that the divergence of the effective mass of the quasiparticle at the Fermi surface emerges again no matter that we work on the temporal or Coulomb gauges. We develop an effective theory where the finite effective mass serves as a `bare' effective mass and show that the same divergence of the RPA effective mass. On the other hand, the correct behavior of the response functions in the small band mass limit could be seen clearly in the temporal gauge since there is a self-interaction among the magnetoplasmons.

On polarons and dimerons in the two-dimensional attractive Hubbard model

Abstract:A two-dimensional spin-up ideal Fermi gas interacting attractively with a spin-down impurity in the continuum undergoes, at zero temperature, a first-order phase transition from a polaron to a dimeron state. Here we study a similar system on a square lattice, by considering the attractive 2D Fermi-Hubbard model with a single spin-down and a finite filling fraction of spin-up fermions. We study polaron and dimeron quasi-particle properties via variational Ansatz up to one particle-hole excitation. Moreover, we develop a determinant diagrammatic Monte Carlo algorithm for this problem based on expansion in bare on-site coupling $U$. This algorithm turns out to be sign-problem free at any filling of spin-up fermions, allowing one to sample very high diagram order (larger than $200$ in our study) and to do simulations for large $U/t$ (we go up to $U/t=-20$ with $t$ the hopping strength). Both methods give qualitatively consistent results. With variational Ansatz we go to even larger on-site attraction. In contrast with the continuum case, we do not observe any polaron-to-dimeron transition for a range of spin-up filling fractions $\rho_{\uparrow}$ between $0.1$ and $0.4$. % (away from the low-filling limit). The polaron state always gives a lower energy and has a finite quasi-particle residue.

Abstract:We prove the Fröhlich polaron has effective mass at least $\frac{\alpha^4}{(\log \alpha)^6}$ when the coupling strength $\alpha$ is large. This nearly matches the quartic growth rate $C_*\alpha^4$ predicted by Landau and Pekar in 1948 and complements a recent sharp upper bound of Brooks and Seiringer. Our proof works with the path integral formulation of the problem and systematically applies the Gaussian correlation inequality to exploit quasi-concavity of the interaction terms.

Signatures of polaronic charge ordering in optical and dc conductivity using dynamical mean field theory

Abstract:We apply dynamical mean field theory to study a prototypical model that describes charge ordering in the presence of both electron-lattice interactions and intersite electrostatic repulsion between electrons. We calculate the optical and d.c. conductivity, and derive approximate formulas valid in the limiting electron-lattice coupling regimes. In the weak coupling regime, we recover the usual behavior of charge density waves, characterized by a transfer of spectral weight due to the opening of a gap in the excitation spectrum. In the opposite limit of very strong electron-lattice coupling, instead, the charge ordering transition is signaled by a global enhancement of the optical absorption, with no appreciable spectral weight transfer. Such behavior is related to the progressive suppression of thermally activated charge defects taking place below the critical temperature. At intermediate values of the coupling within the polaronic regime, a complex behavior is obtained where both mechanisms of transfer and enhancement of spectral weight coexist.

Abstract:The strong coupling half-filled Kondo lattice model is an important example of a strongly interacting dense Fermi system for which conventional Fermi gas analysis has thus far failed. We remedy this by deriving an exact transformation that maps the model to a dilute gas of weakly interacting electron and hole quasiparticles that can then be analyzed by conventional dilute Fermi gas methods. The quasiparticle vacuum is a singlet Mott insulator for which the quasiparticle dynamics are simple. Since the transformation is exact, the electron spectral weight sum rules are obeyed exactly. Subtleties in understanding the behavior of electrons in the singlet Mott insulator can be reduced to a fairly complicated but precise relation between quasiparticles and bare electrons. The theory of free quasiparticles can be interpreted as an exactly solvable model for a singlet Mott insulator, providing an exact model in which to explore the strong coupling regime of a singlet Kondo insulator.
Effect of electron-phonon interaction range on lattice polaron dynamics: a continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo study

Abstract:We present the numerically exact ground state energy, effective mass, and isotope exponents of a one-dimensional lattice polaron, valid for any range of electron-phonon interaction, applying a new continuous-time Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) technique in a wide range of coupling strength and adiabatic ratio. The QMC method is free from any systematic finite-size and finite-time-step errors. We compare our numerically exact results with analytical weak-coupling theory and with the strong-coupling $1/\lambda$ expansion. We show that the exact results agree well with the canonical Fröhlich and Holstein-Lang-Firsov theories in the weak and strong coupling limits, respectively, for any range of interaction. We find a strong dependence of the polaron dynamics on the range of interaction. An increased range of interaction has a similar effect to an increased (less adiabatic) phonon frequency: specifically, a reduction in the effective mass.
