Abstract:We introduce methods to study the combinatorics of the normal form of large random elements in Artin-Tits monoids. These methods also apply in an axiomatic framework that encompasses other monoids such as dual braid monoids.

Abstract:We study and classify Artin-Schelter regular algebras of dimension five with two generators under an additional Z(2)-grading by Hilbert driven Grobner basis computations. All the algebras we obtained are strongly noetherian, Auslander regular, and Cohen-Macaulay. One of the results provides an answer to Floystad-Vatne's question in the context of Z(2)-grading. Our results also achieve a connection between Lyndon words and Artin-Schelter regular algebras. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:We discuss formulas for the asymptotic growth rate of the number of summands in tensor powers in certain (finite or infinite) monoidal categories. Our focus is on monoidal categories with infinitely many indecomposable objects, with our main tools being generalized Perron-Frobenius theory alongside techniques from random walks.

The Artin monoid Cayley graph

Abstract:In this paper we investigate properties of the Artin monoid Cayley graph. This is the Cayley graph of an Artin group $A_\Gamma$ with respect to the (infinite) generating set given by the associated Artin monoid $A^+_\Gamma$. In a previous paper, the first three authors introduced a monoid Deligne complex and showed that this complex is contractible for all Artin groups. In this paper, we show that the Artin monoid Cayley graph is quasi-isometric to a modification of the Deligne complex for $A_\Gamma$ obtained by coning off translates of the monoid Deligne complex. We then address the question of when the monoid Cayley graph has infinite diameter. We conjecture that this holds for all Artin groups of infinite type. We give a set of criteria that imply infinite diameter, and using existing solutions to the word problem for large-type Artin groups and 3-free Artin groups, we prove that the conjecture holds for any Artin group containing a 3-generator subgroup of one of these two types.

Abstract:The aim of the present work is to systematically study homomorphisms of Hecke and Artin monoids and thus to develop their comprehensive theory. Our original motivation was the striking observation that parabolic projections of Hecke monoids respect all parabolic elements. We found other classes of homomorphisms of Hecke monoids with the same property and discovered that many of them lift to homomorphisms of covering Artin monoids with a similar property. It turned out that they belong to a much larger class (in fact, a category) of homomorphisms of Artin monoids, most of which appear to be new.

Abstract:Studying ceratin combinatorial properties of non-unique factorizations have been a subject of recent literatures. Little is known about two combinatorial invariants, namely the catenary degree and the tame degree, even in the case of numerical monoids. In this paper we compute these invariants for a certain class of numerical monoids generated by generalized arithmetic sequences. We also show that the difference between the tame degree and the catenary degree can be arbitrary large even if the number of minimal generators is fixed.

Our strategy involves reconstructing the associated Deligne complexes in a purely algebraic manner, i.e. in a way that is independent from the choice of standard generators for the groups.

Abstract:We study the structure of the asymptotic expansion of the probability that a combinatorial object is connected. We show that the coefficients appearing in those asymptotics are integers and can be interpreted as the counting sequences of other derivative combinatorial classes. The general result applies to rapidly growing combinatorial structures, which we call gargantuan, that also admit a sequence decomposition. The result is then applied to several models of graphs, of surfaces (square-tiled surfaces, combinatorial maps), and to geometric models of higher dimension (constellations, graph encoded manifolds). The corresponding derivative combinatorial classes are irreducible (multi)tournaments, indecomposable (multi)permutations and indecomposable perfect (multi)matchings.

On minimal presentations of numerical monoids

Abstract:We consider the classical problem of determining the largest possible cardinality of a minimal presentation of a numerical monoid with given embedding dimension and multiplicity. Very few values of this cardinality are known. In addressing this problem, we apply tools from Hilbert functions and free resolutions of artinian standard graded algebras. This approach allows us to solve the problem in many cases and, at the same time, identify subtle difficulties in the remaining cases. As a by-product of our analysis, we deduce results for the corresponding problem for the type of a numerical monoid.

Characterising large-type Artin groups

Abstract:We show that the class of large-type Artin groups is invariant under isomorphism, in stark contrast with the corresponding situation for Coxeter groups. We obtain this result by providing a purely algebraic characterisation of large-type Artin groups (i.e. independent of the presentation graph). As a corollary, we completely describe the Artin groups isomorphic to a given large-type Artin group, and characterise those large-type Artin groups that are rigid.

Abstract:Abstract We study direct-sum decompositions of torsion-free, finitely generated modules over a (commutative) Bass ring R through the factorization theory of the corresponding monoid T ( R ). Results of Levy–Wiegand and Levy–Odenthal together with a study of the local case yield an explicit description of T ( R ). The monoid is typically neither factorial nor cancellative. Nevertheless, we construct a transfer homomorphism to a monoid of graph agglomerations—a natural class of monoids serving as combinatorial models for the factorization theory of T ( R ). As a consequence, the monoid T ( R ) is transfer Krull of finite type and several finiteness results on arithmetical invariants apply. We also establish results on the elasticity of T ( R ) and characterize when T ( R ) is half-factorial. (Factoriality, that is, torsion-free Krull–Remak–Schmidt–Azumaya, is characterized by a theorem of Levy–Odenthal.) The monoids of graph agglomerations introduced here are also of independent interest.

Abstract:The monomorphism category $\mathcal S_n(\mathcal X)$ is introduced, where $\mathcal X$ is a full subcategory of the module category $A$-mod of Artin algebra $A$. The key result is a reciprocity of the monomorphism operator $\mathcal S_n$ and the left perpendicular operator $^\perp$: for a cotilting $A$-module $T$, there is a canonical construction of a cotilting $T_n(A)$-module ${\rm \bf m}(T)$, such that $\mathcal S_n(^\perp T) = \ ^\perp {\rm \bf m}(T)$. As applications, $\mathcal S_n(\mathcal X)$ is a resolving contravariantly finite subcategory in $T_n(A)$-mod with $\hat{\mathcal S_n(\mathcal X)} = T_n(A)$-mod if and only if $\mathcal X$ is a resolving contravariantly finite subcategory in $A$-mod with $\hat{\mathcal X} = A$-mod. For a Gorenstein algebra $A$, the category $T_n(A)\mbox{-}\mathcal Gproj$ of Gorenstein-projective $T_n(A)$-modules can be explicitly determined as $\mathcal S_n(^\perp A)$. Also, self-injective algebras $A$ can be characterized by the property $T_n(A)\mbox{-}\mathcal Gproj = \mathcal S_n(A)$. Using $\mathcal S_n(A)= \ ^\perp {\rm \bf m}(D(A_A))$, a characterization of $\mathcal S_n(A)$ of finite type is obtained.

Abstract:The paper is devoted to the study of deformations of Artinian algebras and zero-dimensional germs of varieties. In particular, an approach is developed to solving the open problem about the nonexistence of rigid Artinian algebras; it is based essentially on the use of the canonical duality in the cotangent complex. Thus, it is shown that there are no rigid Gorenstein Artinian algebras and rigid almost complete intersections. The proof of the latter statement is based on the properties of the torsion functors. More precisely, the tensor product of the conormal and canonical modules of the corresponding Artinian algebra is calculated. In this case, the homology and cohomology groups of higher degrees are also found. Among other things, some estimates are obtained for the dimension of the spaces of the first lower and upper cotangent functors of Artinian algebras, and the relationship between them is described. In conclusion, several examples of nonsmoothable Artinian noncomplete intersections are examined, and some unusual properties of such algebras are discussed.

Abstract:Inspired by classical results by Benoist, we introduce and study natural objects associated to an integrable tangent vector to the character variety $\mathfrak X(\Gamma,\mathsf G)$ of a semi-group $\Gamma$, with values on a semi-simple real algebraic group $\mathsf G$ of the non-compact type. We obtain non-empty interior of the cone of Jordan variations and, when $\mathsf G$ is split, we obtain double-density results associated to these variations, giving in particular non-empty interior of the set of length-normalized variations. We then apply the developed techniques to study pressure forms on the space of Anosov representations, in particular to higher-rank Teichmüller spaces. Among other things we exhibit an explicit functional $\varphi\in\mathfrak a^*$ whose pressure form is compatible with Goldman's symplectic form at the Fuchsian points of the Hitchin component. We finally exhibit a Diophantine equation that governs the degeneration of the Hausdorff dimension of higher-quasi-circles.

On the interplay between notions of additive and multiplicative largeness and its combinatorial applications

Abstract:Many natural notions of additive and multiplicative largeness arise from results in Ramsey theory. In this paper, we explain the relationships between these notions for subsets of $\mathbb{N}$ and in more general ring-theoretic structures. We show that multiplicative largeness begets additive largeness in three ways and give a collection of examples demonstrating the optimality of these results. We also give a variety of applications arising from the connection between additive and multiplicative largeness. For example, we show that given any $n, k \in \mathbb{N}$, any finite set with fewer than $n$ elements in a sufficiently large finite field can be translated so that each of its elements becomes a non-zero $k^{\text{th}}$ power. We also prove a theorem concerning Diophantine approximation along multiplicatively syndetic subsets of $\mathbb{N}$ and a theorem showing that subsets of positive upper Banach density in certain multiplicative sub-semigroups of $\mathbb{N}$ of zero density contain arbitrarily long arithmetic progressions. Along the way, we develop a new characterization of upper Banach density in a wide class of amenable semigroups and make explicit the uniformity in recurrence theorems from measure theoretic and topological dynamics. This in turn leads to strengthened forms of classical theorems of Szemerédi and van der Waerden on arithmetic progressions.

Abstract:In this article, we study homomorphisms between Artin groups that belong to two generic classes. For XL-type Artin groups over complete graphs, we describe all possible homomorphisms with sufficiently large image, and prove in particular that such groups are both hopfian and co-hopfian. For Artin groups with all labels at least $6$, we completely characterise in terms of the presentation graph when these groups have a finite outer automorphism group, as well as when they are co-hopfian. Moreover, when the presentation graph has no cut-vertex, we provide a generating set for their automorphism group.

Artin Symmetric Functions

Abstract:In this paper we construct an algebraic invariant attached to Galois representations over number fields. This invariant, which we call an Artin symmetric function, lives in a certain ring we introduce called the ring of arithmetic symmetric functions. This ring is built from a family of symmetric functions rings indexed by prime ideals of the base field. We prove many necessary basic results for the ring of arithmetic symmetric functions as well as introduce the analogues of some standard number-theoretic objects in this setting. We prove that the Artin symmetric functions satisfy the same algebraic properties that the Artin L-functions do with respect to induction, inflation, and direct summation of representations. The expansion coefficients of these symmetric functions in different natural bases are shown to be character values of representations of a compact group related to the original Galois group. In the most interesting case, the expansion coefficients into a specialized Hall-Littlewood basis come from new representations built from the original Galois representation using polynomial functors corresponding to modified Hall-Littlewood polynomials. Using a special case of the Satake isomorphism in type GL, as formulated by Macdonald, we show that the Artin symmetric functions yield families of functions in the (finite) global spherical Hecke algebras in type GL which exhibit natural stability properties. We compute the Mellin transforms of these functions and relate them to infinite products of shifted Artin L-functions. We then prove some analytic properties of these Dirichlet series and give an explicit expansion of these series using the Hall-Littlewood polynomial functors.
