Abstract:We obtain Krickeberg mixing for a class of Z extensions of Gibbs Markov semiflows with roof function and displacement function not in L2, where previous methods have not been employed. This is done via a 'smooth tail' estimate for the isomorphic suspension flow.

Abstract:We show that dynamical systems with phi-mixing measures have local escape rates which are exponential with rate 1 at non-periodic points and equal to the extremal index at periodic points. We apply this result to equilibrium states on subshifts of finite type, Gibbs-Markov systems, expanding interval maps, Gibbs states on conformal repellers, and more generally to Young towers, and by extension to all systems that can be modeled by a Young tower.
Stretched-exponential mixing for surface semiflows and Anosov flows

Abstract:For a surface semiflow that is a suspension of a $ C^{1+\alpha} $ expanding Markov interval map, we prove that, under the assumptions that the roof function is Lipschitz continuous and not cohomologous to a locally constant function, the semiflow exhibits stretched-exponential mixing with respect to the SRB measure. This result extends to hyperbolic skew-product semiflows and hyperbolic attractors. Specifically, codimension-one topologically mixing Anosov flows with Lipschitz continuous stable foliations demonstrate stretched-exponential mixing with respect to their SRB measures.

Abstract:We present a coupling framework to upper bound the total variation mixing time of various Metropolis-adjusted, gradient-based Markov kernels in the `high acceptance regime'. The approach uses a localization argument to boost local mixing of the underlying unadjusted kernel to mixing of the adjusted kernel when the acceptance rate is suitably high. As an application, mixing time guarantees are developed for a non-reversible, adjusted Markov chain based on the kinetic Langevin diffusion, where little is currently understood.

Rapid mixing for compact group extensions of hyperbolic flows

Abstract:In this article, we give explicit conditions for compact group extensions of hyperbolic flows (including geodesic flows on negatively curved manifolds) to exhibit quantifiable rates of mixing (or decay of correlations) with respect to the natural probability measures, which are locally the product of a Gibbs measure for a Hölder potential and the Haar measure. More precisely, we show that the mixing rate with respect to Hölder functions will be faster than any given polynomial (i.e., rapid mixing). We also give error estimates on the equidistribution of the holonomy around closed orbits. In particular, these results apply to some frame flows for manifolds with negative sectional curvatures.

Trickle-Down in Localization Schemes and Applications

Abstract:Trickle-down is a phenomenon in high-dimensional expanders with many important applications -- for example, it is a key ingredient in various constructions of high-dimensional expanders or the proof of rapid mixing for the basis exchange walk on matroids and in the analysis of log-concave polynomials. We formulate a generalized trickle-down equation in the abstract context of linear-tilt localization schemes. Building on this generalization, we improve the best-known results for several Markov chain mixing or sampling problems -- for example, we improve the threshold up to which Glauber dynamics is known to mix rapidly in the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick spin glass model. Other applications of our framework include improved mixing results for the Langevin dynamics in the $O(N)$ model, and near-linear time sampling algorithms for the antiferromagnetic and fixed-magnetization Ising models on expanders. For the latter application, we use a new dynamics inspired by polarization, a technique from the theory of stable polynomials.

Abstract:We consider extensions of non-singular maps which are exact, respectively K-mixing, or at least have a decomposition into positive-measure exact, respectively K-mixing, components. The fibers of the extension spaces have countable (finite or infinite) cardinality and the action on them is assumed surjective or bijective. We call these systems, respectively, fiber-surjective and fiber-bijective extensions. Technically, they are skew products, though the point of view we take here is not the one generally associated with skew products. Our main results are an Exact and a K-mixing Decomposition Theorem. The latter can be used to show that a large number of periodic Lorentz gases (the term denoting here general group extensions of Sinai billiards, including Lorentz tubes and slabs, in any dimension) are K-mixing.

Abstract:We consider skew products over subshifts of finite type in which the fibers are copies of the real line, and we study their mixing properties with respect to any infinite invariant measure given by the product of a Gibbs measure on the base and Lebesgue measure on the fibers. Assuming that the system is accessible, we prove a quantitative version of Krickeberg mixing for a class of observables which is dense in the space of continuous functions vanishing at infinity.

Rapid Mixing at the Uniqueness Threshold

Abstract:Over the past decades, a fascinating computational phase transition has been identified in sampling from Gibbs distributions. Though, the computational complexity at the critical point remains poorly understood, as previous algorithmic and hardness results all required a constant slack from this threshold. In this paper, we resolve this open question at the critical phase transition threshold, thus completing the picture of the computational phase transition. We show that for the hardcore model on graphs with maximum degree $\Delta\ge 3$ at the uniqueness threshold $\lambda = \lambda_c(\Delta)$, the mixing time of Glauber dynamics is upper bounded by a polynomial in $n$, but is not nearly linear in the worst case. For the Ising model (either antiferromagnetic or ferromagnetic), we establish similar results. For the Ising model on graphs with maximum degree $\Delta\ge 3$ at the critical temperature $\beta$ where $|\beta| = \beta_c(\Delta)$, with the tree-uniqueness threshold $\beta_c(\Delta)$, we show that the mixing time of Glauber dynamics is upper bounded by $\tilde{O}\left(n^{2 + O(1/\Delta)}\right)$ and lower bounded by $\Omega\left(n^{3/2}\right)$ in the worst case. For the Ising model specified by a critical interaction matrix $J$ with $\left \lVert J \right \rVert_2=1$, we obtain an upper bound $\tilde{O}(n^{3/2})$ for the mixing time, matching the lower bound $\Omega\left(n^{3/2}\right)$ on the complete graph up to a logarithmic factor. Our mixing time upper bounds are derived from a new interpretation and analysis of the localization scheme method introduced by Chen and Eldan (2022), applied to the field dynamics for the hardcore model and the proximal sampler for the Ising model. As key steps in both our upper and lower bounds, we establish sub-linear upper and lower bounds for spectral independence at the critical point for worst-case instances.

Abstract:Glauber dynamics is a powerful tool to generate randomized, approximate solutions to combinatorially difficult problems. Applications include Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) simulation and distributed scheduling for wireless networks. In this paper, we derive bounds on the mixing time of a generalization of Glauber dynamics where multiple vertices are allowed to update their states in parallel and the fugacity of each vertex can be different. The results can be used to obtain various conditions on the system parameters such as fugacities, vertex degrees and update probabilities, under which the mixing time grows polynomially in the number of vertices.

Abstract:We establish an abstract, effective, exponential large deviations type estimate for Markov systems satisfying a weaker form of mixing. We employ this result to derive such estimates, as well as a central limit theorem, for the skew product encoding a random torus translation, a model we call a mixed random-quasiperiodic dynamical system. This abstract scheme is applicable to many other types of skew product dynamics, including systems for which the spectral gap property for the transition or the transfer operator does not hold.

Abstract:We propose methods to estimate the individual $\beta$-mixing coefficients of a real-valued geometrically ergodic Markov process from a single sample-path $X_0,X_1, \dots,X_n$. Under standard smoothness conditions on the densities, namely, that the joint density of the pair $(X_0,X_m)$ for each $m$ lies in a Besov space $B^s_{1,\infty}(\mathbb R^2)$ for some known $s>0$, we obtain a rate of convergence of order $\mathcal{O}(\log(n) n^{-[s]/(2[s]+2)})$ for the expected error of our estimator in this case\footnote{We use $[s]$ to denote the integer part of the decomposition $s=[s]+\{s\}$ of $s \in (0,\infty)$ into an integer term and a {\em strictly positive} remainder term $\{s\} \in (0,1]$.}. We complement this result with a high-probability bound on the estimation error, and further obtain analogues of these bounds in the case where the state-space is finite. Naturally no density assumptions are required in this setting; the expected error rate is shown to be of order $\mathcal O(\log(n) n^{-1/2})$.

A remark on rapid mixing for hyperbolic flows

Abstract:In this short paper, we introduce a new criterion based on the temporal distance function that guarantees rapid mixing for a hyperbolic flow with respect to Gibbs measures. This criterion is probabilistically satisfied almost surely but lacks robustness. Moreover, it enables us to establish rapid mixing for a class of hyperbolic flows that do not meet the existing rapid mixing criteria. Furthermore, beyond uniform hyperbolicity, our proof also works for a significant category of non-uniformly hyperbolic flows that can be modeled by Young towers.

Abstract:For general spin systems, we prove that a contractive coupling for any local Markov chain implies optimal bounds on the mixing time and the modified log-Sobolev constant for a large class of Markov chains including the Glauber dynamics, arbitrary heat-bath block dynamics, and the Swendsen-Wang dynamics. This reveals a novel connection between probabilistic techniques for bounding the convergence to stationarity and analytic tools for analyzing the decay of relative entropy. As a corollary of our general results, we obtain $O(n\log{n})$ mixing time and $\Omega(1/n)$ modified log-Sobolev constant of the Glauber dynamics for sampling random $q$-colorings of an $n$-vertex graph with constant maximum degree $\Delta$ when $q > (11/6 - \epsilon_0)\Delta$ for some fixed $\epsilon_0>0$. We also obtain $O(\log{n})$ mixing time and $\Omega(1)$ modified log-Sobolev constant of the Swendsen-Wang dynamics for the ferromagnetic Ising model on an $n$-vertex graph of constant maximum degree when the parameters of the system lie in the tree uniqueness region. At the heart of our results are new techniques for establishing spectral independence of the spin system and block factorization of the relative entropy. On one hand we prove that a contractive coupling of a local Markov chain implies spectral independence of the Gibbs distribution. On the other hand we show that spectral independence implies factorization of entropy for arbitrary blocks, establishing optimal bounds on the modified log-Sobolev constant of the corresponding block dynamics.

Empirical and Instance-Dependent Estimation of Markov Chain and Mixing Time

Abstract:We address the problem of estimating the mixing time of a Markov chain from a single trajectory of observations. Unlike most previous works which employed Hilbert space methods to estimate spectral gaps, we opt for an approach based on contraction with respect to total variation. Specifically, we estimate the contraction coefficient introduced in Wolfer [2020], inspired from Dobrushin's. This quantity, unlike the spectral gap, controls the mixing time up to strong universal constants and remains applicable to non-reversible chains. We improve existing fully data-dependent confidence intervals around this contraction coefficient, which are both easier to compute and thinner than spectral counterparts. Furthermore, we introduce a novel analysis beyond the worst-case scenario by leveraging additional information about the transition matrix. This allows us to derive instance-dependent rates for estimating the matrix with respect to the induced uniform norm, and some of its mixing properties.

Exponential mixing and essential spectral gaps for Anosov subgroups

Abstract:Let $\Gamma$ be a Zariski dense $\Theta$-Anosov subgroup of a connected semisimple real algebraic group for some nonempty subset of simple roots $\Theta$. In the Anosov setting, there is a natural compact metric space $\mathcal{X}$ equipped with a family of translation flows $\{a^{\mathsf{v}}_t\}_{t \in \mathbb R}$, parameterized by vectors $\mathsf{v}$ in the interior of the $\Theta$-limit cone $\mathcal{L}_\Theta$ of $\Gamma$, and they are Hölder conjugate to Hölder reparametrizations of the Gromov geodesic flow. We prove that for all $\mathsf{v}$ outside an exceptional cone $\mathscr{E} \subset \operatorname{int}\mathcal{L}_\Theta$, which is a smooth image of the walls of the Weyl chamber, the translation flow is exponentially mixing with respect to the Bowen-Margulis-Sullivan measure associated to $\mathsf{v}$. Moreover, the exponential rate is uniform for a compact set of such $\mathsf{v}$. We also obtain an essential spectral gap formulated in terms of the Selberg zeta function and a prime orbit theorem with a power saving error term. Our proof relies on Lie theoretic techniques to prove the crucial local non-integrability condition (LNIC) for the translation flows and thereby implement Dolgopyat's method in a uniform fashion. The exceptional cone $\mathscr{E}$ arises from the failure of LNIC for those vectors.

Abstract:Molecules of different species mix by local rearrangement and long-range migration. Under certain conditions, the molecules are partially jammed: they rearrange slowly, but migrate fast. Here we formulate a theory of mixing when the long-range migration of molecules is fast, and the local rearrangement of molecules sets the time needed for mixing. In this limit, the time needed for mixing is independent of the length scale of inhomogeneity. We identify three modes of local rearrangement: shear, dilation, and swap. All three modes break and form intermolecular bonds. We place the three modes on equal footing, as distinct, concurrent, nonequilibrium processes. Our theory thus removes the bias that assumes local chemical equilibrium but allows the nonequilibrium process of shear. We propose a kinetic model of four independent viscosity-like coefficients, and a thermodynamic model of ideal mixing of molecules of unequal sizes and nonzero volume of mixing. We illustrate the theory with several examples, including the development of growth stress, the homogenization of a bilayer, and the disappearance of an inclusion in a matrix.
A new flow-kinematics-based model for time-dependent effective dispersion in mixing-limited reactions

Abstract:A new upscaling procedure that provides 1D representations of 2D mixing-limited reactive transport systems is developed and applied. A key complication with upscaled models in this setting is that the procedure must differentiate between interface spreading, driven by the spatially variable velocity field, and mixing, in which components contact one another and react. Our model captures the enhanced mixing caused by spreading through use of a time-dependent effective dispersion term. The early-time behavior of this dispersion is driven by flow kinematics, while at late times it reaches a Taylor-dispersion-like limit. The early-time behavior is modeled here using a very fast (purely advective) particle tracking procedure, while late-time effects are estimated from scaling arguments. The only free parameter in the model is the asymptotic effective dispersion. This quantity is determined for a few cases by calibrating 1D results to reference 2D results. For most cases, it is estimated using a fit involving a dimensionless grouping of system variables. Numerical results for bimolecular reaction systems are generated using a pseudo-spectral approach capable of resolving fronts at high Peclet numbers. Results are presented for two different types of 2D velocity fields over a wide range of parameters. The upscaled model is shown to provide highly accurate results for conversion factor, along with reasonable approximations of the spatial distribution of reaction occurrence. The model is also shown to be valid for non-reacting systems, and results for such cases can be used in the calibration step to achieve computational savings.

Rapid Mixing via Coupling Independence for Spin Systems with Unbounded Degree

Abstract:We develop a new framework to prove the mixing or relaxation time for the Glauber dynamics on spin systems with unbounded degree. It works for general spin systems including both $2$-spin and multi-spin systems. As applications for this approach: $\bullet$ We prove the optimal $O(n)$ relaxation time for the Glauber dynamics of random $q$-list-coloring on an $n$-vertices triangle-tree graph with maximum degree $\Delta$ such that $q/\Delta > \alpha^\star$, where $\alpha^\star \approx 1.763$ is the unique positive solution of the equation $\alpha = \exp(1/\alpha)$. This improves the $n^{1+o(1)}$ relaxation time for Glauber dynamics obtained by the previous work of Jain, Pham, and Vuong (2022). Besides, our framework can also give a near-linear time sampling algorithm under the same condition. $\bullet$ We prove the optimal $O(n)$ relaxation time and near-optimal $\widetilde{O}(n)$ mixing time for the Glauber dynamics on hardcore models with parameter $\lambda$ in $\textit{balanced}$ bipartite graphs such that $\lambda < \lambda_c(\Delta_L)$ for the max degree $\Delta_L$ in left part and the max degree $\Delta_R$ of right part satisfies $\Delta_R = O(\Delta_L)$. This improves the previous result by Chen, Liu, and Yin (2023). At the heart of our proof is the notion of $\textit{coupling independence}$ which allows us to consider multiple vertices as a huge single vertex with exponentially large domain and do a "coarse-grained" local-to-global argument on spin systems. The technique works for general (multi) spin systems and helps us obtain some new comparison results for Glauber dynamics.

Locally Stationary Distributions: A Framework for Analyzing Slow-Mixing Markov Chains

Abstract:Many natural Markov chains fail to mix to their stationary distribution in polynomially many steps. Often, this slow mixing is inevitable since it is computationally intractable to sample from their stationary measure. Nevertheless, Markov chains can be shown to always converge quickly to measures that are locally stationary, i.e., measures that don't change over a small number of steps. These locally stationary measures are analogous to local minima in continuous optimization, while stationary measures correspond to global minima. While locally stationary measures can be statistically far from stationary measures, do they enjoy provable theoretical guarantees that have algorithmic implications? We study this question in this work and demonstrate three algorithmic applications of locally stationary measures: 1. We show that Glauber dynamics on the hardcore model can be used to find independent sets of size $\Omega\left(\frac{\log d}{d} \cdot n\right)$ in triangle-free graphs of degree at most $d$. 2. Let $W$ be a symmetric real matrix with bounded spectral diameter and $v$ be a unit vector. Given the matrix $M = \lambda vv^\top + W$ with a planted rank-one spike along vector $v$, for sufficiently large constant $\lambda$, Glauber dynamics on the Ising model defined by $M$ samples vectors $x \in \{\pm 1\}^n$ that have constant correlation with the vector $v$. 3. Let $M = A_{\mathbf{G}} - \frac{d}{n}\mathbf{1}\mathbf{1}^\top$ be a centered version of the adjacency matrix where the graph $\mathbf{G}$ is drawn from a sparse 2-community stochastic block model. We show that for sufficiently large constant signal-to-noise ratio, Glauber dynamics on the Ising model defined by $M$ samples vectors $x \in \{\pm 1\}^n$ that have constant correlation with the hidden community vector $\mathbf{\sigma}$.

Abstract:For distributions over discrete product spaces $\prod_{i=1}^n \Omega_i'$, Glauber dynamics is a Markov chain that at each step, resamples a random coordinate conditioned on the other coordinates. We show that $k$-Glauber dynamics, which resamples a random subset of $k$ coordinates, mixes $k$ times faster in $\chi^2$-divergence, and assuming approximate tensorization of entropy, mixes $k$ times faster in KL-divergence. We apply this to obtain parallel algorithms in two settings: (1) For the Ising model $\mu_{J,h}(x)\propto \exp(\frac1 2\left\langle x,Jx \right\rangle + \langle h,x\rangle)$ with $\|J\|<1-c$ (the regime where fast mixing is known), we show that we can implement each step of $\widetilde \Theta(n/\|J\|_F)$-Glauber dynamics efficiently with a parallel algorithm, resulting in a parallel algorithm with running time $\widetilde O(\|J\|_F) = \widetilde O(\sqrt n)$. (2) For the mixed $p$-spin model at high enough temperature, we show that with high probability we can implement each step of $\widetilde \Theta(\sqrt n)$-Glauber dynamics efficiently and obtain running time $\widetilde O(\sqrt n)$.
