Abstract:<p class="a-plus-plus">The traditional role of a communication engineer is to address the technical problem of transporting bits reliably over a noisy channel. With the emergence of 5G, and the availability of a variety of competing and coexisting wireless systems, wireless connectivity is becoming a commodity. This article argues that communication engineers in the post-5G era should extend the scope of their activity in terms of design objectives and constraints beyond connectivity to encompass the semantics of the transferred bits within the given applications and use cases. To provide a platform for semantic-aware connectivity solutions, this paper introduces the concept of a semantic-effectiveness (SE) plane as a core part of future communication architectures. The SE plane augments the protocol stack by providing standardized interfaces that enable information filtering and direct control of functionalities at all layers of the protocol stack. The advantages of the SE plane are described in the perspective of recent developments in 5G, and illustrated through a number of example applications. The introduction of a SE plane may help replacing the current "next-G paradigm" in wireless evolution with a framework based on continuous improvements and extensions of the systems and standards.</p>

Abstract:In the sixth generation (6G) era, emerging large-scale computing-based applications (e.g., processing enormous amounts of images in real time in autonomous driving) tend to lead to excessive energy consumption for end users, whose devices are usually energy-constrained. In this context, energy efficiency becomes a critical challenge to be solved for harnessing these promising applications to realize “green” 6G networks. As a remedy, reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) have been proposed for improving energy efficiency by beneficially reconfiguring the wireless propagation environment. In conventional RIS solutions, however, the received signal-to-in-terference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) sometimes may become degraded. This is because the signals impinging on an RIS are typically contaminated by interfering signals that are usually dynamic and unknown. To address this issue, “learning” the properties of the surrounding spectral environment is a promising solution, motivating the convergence of artificial intelligence and spectrum sensing, referred to here as spectrum learning (SL). Inspired by this, we develop an SL-aided RIS framework for intelligently exploiting the inherent characteristics of the radio frequency spectrum for green 6G networks. Given the proposed framework, the RIS controller becomes capable of intelligently “thinking and deciding” whether or not to reflect the incident signals. Therefore, the received SINR can be improved by dynamically configuring the binary ON-OFF status of the RIS elements. The energy efficiency benefits attained are validated with the aid of a specific case study. Finally, we conclude with a list of promising future research directions.

Abstract:This paper explores an integrated approach for improved sensing and positioning with applications in air traffic management (ATM) and in the Advanced Surface Movement Guidance and Control System (A-SMGCS). The integrated approach includes the synergy of 3D Vector Antenna with the novel time-of-arrival and angle-of-arrival estimate methods for accurate positioning, combining the sensing on the sub-6GHz and mmWave spectrum for the enhanced non-cooperative surveillance. For the positioning scope, both uplink and downlink 5G reference signals are investigated and their performance is evaluated. For the non-cooperative sensing scope, a novel 5G-signal-based imaging function is proposed and verified with realistic airport radio-propagation modelling and the AI-based targets tracking-and-motion recognition are investigated. The 5G-based imaging and mmWave radar based detection can be potentially fused to enhance surveillance in the airport. The work is being done within the European-funded project NewSense and it delves into the 5G, Vector Antennas, and mmWave capabilities for future ATM solutions.

Abstract:The existing communication network represented by 5G is used as a communication session data “pipeline”for information exchange between terminal devices and the network. Different from the point-to-point transmission of communication session data, the data generated and consumed by AI, sensing and network operations in 6G network needs to be collected, preprocessed, stored, and analyzed in a distributed manner. To this end, a data plane architecture independent of the traditional user plane was proposed to systematically solve the challenges of managing and monetization of the non-user-plane data for 6G mobile communication networks. The classification and characteristics of 6G network data and data services were identified and defined. Furthermore, based on the comparative analysis of the 5G user plane and the existing data-driven network architecture, a 6G data plane framework composed of two main components i.e. data orchestrator and data agent was proposed, and the data plane functional architecture was elaborated. In addition,three potential options for data forwarding control mechanisms were designed. These mechanisms can support on-path-packet processing within any topology of data pipelines, realizing the construction and maintenance of dynamic programmable data pipeline and the thorough separation of routing algorithms and data forwarding.

Abstract:Existing communication systems are mainly built based on Shannon's information theory, which deliberately ignores the semantic aspects of communication. The recent iteration of wireless technology, 5G and beyond, promises to support a plethora of services enabled by carefully tailored network capabilities based on contents, requirements, as well as semantics. This has sparked significant interest in semantic communication, a novel paradigm that involves the meaning of messages in communication. In this article, we first review classic semantic communication frameworks and then summarize key challenges that hinder its popularity. We observe that some semantic communication processes such as semantic detection, knowledge modeling, and coordination can be resource-consuming and inefficient, especially for communication between a single source and a destination. We therefore propose a novel architecture based on federated edge intelligence for supporting resource-efficient semantic-aware networking. Our architecture allows each user to offload computationally intensive semantic encoding and decoding tasks to edge servers and protect its proprietary model-re-lated information by coordinating via intermediate results. Our simulation result shows that the proposed architecture can reduce resource consumption and significantly improve communication efficiency.

Abstract:The rapid advancement of modern communication technologies necessitates the development of generalized multi-access frameworks and the continuous implementation of rate splitting, augmented with semantic awareness. This trend, coupled with the mounting pressure on wireless services, underscores the need for intelligent approaches to radio signal propagation. In response to these challenges, intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRS) have garnered significant attention for their ability to control data transmission systems in a goal-oriented and dynamic manner. This innovation is largely attributed to equitable resource allocation and the dynamic enhancement of network performance. However, the integration of rate-splitting multi-access (RSMA) architecture with semantic considerations imposes stringent requirements on IRS platforms to ensure seamless connectivity and broad coverage for a diverse user base without interference. Semantic communications hinge on a knowledge base-a centralized repository of integrated information related to the transmitted data-which becomes critically important in multi-antenna scenarios. This article proposes a novel set of design strategies for RSMA-IRS systems, enabled by reconfigurable intelligent surface synergizing with semantic communication principles. An experimental analysis is presented, demonstrating the effectiveness of these design guidelines in the context of Beyond 5G/6G communication systems. The RSMA-IRS model, infused with semantic communication, offers a promising solution for future wireless networks. Performance evaluations of the proposed approach reveal that, despite an increase in the number of users, the delay in the RSMA-IRS framework incorporating semantics is 2.94% less than that of a RSMA-IRS system without semantic integration.

A Survey on Integrated Sensing and Communication with Intelligent Metasurfaces: Trends, Challenges, and Opportunities

Abstract:The emergence of various technologies demanding both high data rates and precise sensing performance, such as autonomous vehicles and internet of things devices, has propelled an increasing popularity of integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) in recent years. ISAC offers an efficient framework for communication and sensing where both functionalities are carried out in a shared spectrum, utilizing the same hardware, beamformer and waveform design. At the same time, intelligent metasurfaces have been identified as an architectural enabler for the upcoming sixth-generation (6G) of wireless communication due to their ability to control the propagation environment in an energy-efficient manner. Due to the potential of metasurfaces to enhance both communication and sensing performance, numerous papers have explored the performance gains of using metasurfaces to improve ISAC. This survey reviews the existing literature on metasurface-assisted ISAC, detailing the associated challenges and opportunities. To provide a comprehensive overview, we commence by offering relevant background information on standalone metasurface-assisted communication and metasurface-assisted sensing systems, followed by a discussion on the fundamentals of ISAC. The core part of the paper then summarizes the state-of-the-art studies on metasurface-assisted ISAC with metasurfaces employed as separate entities placed between the transmitter and receiver, also known as reconfigurable intelligent surfaces, with an emphasis on its two levels of integration: radio-communications co-existence and dual-function radar-communications. We also review the current works in the area of holographic ISAC where metasurfaces are used to form part of ISAC transmitter. Within each category, the challenges, opportunities and future research directions are also highlighted.

Abstract:This paper offers an in-depth exploration of semantic communications, focusing on its integral role in wireless networks. We dissect its foundational architecture and the key elements that enable seamless AI integration. Our research categorizes semantic communications into various multimedia and task types, evaluating their applicability in both single and multitasking environments. We also investigate resource allocation and goal-oriented strategies, supported by empirical case studies. The paper concludes by spotlighting emerging trends, including AI, IoT, and 5G beyond. It identifies pressing challenges such as standardization, security, and efficiency. Our work provides a holistic understanding of contemporary semantic communications paradigms.

Abstract:Aerial platforms are expected to deliver enhanced and seamless connectivity in the fifth generation (5G) wireless networks and beyond (B5G). This is generally achievable by supporting advanced onboard communication features embedded in heavy and energy-intensive equipment. Alternatively, reconfigurable smart surfaces (RSS), which smartly exploit/recycle signal reflections in the environment, are increasingly being recognized as a new wireless communication paradigm to improve communication links. In fact, their reduced cost, low power use, light weight, and flexible deployment make them an attractive candidate for integration with 5G/B5G technologies. In this article, we discuss comprehensive approaches to the integration of RSS in aerial platforms. First, we present a review of RSS technology, its operations and types of communication. Next, we describe how RSS can be used in aerial platforms, and we propose a control architecture workflow. Then, several potential use cases are presented and discussed. Finally, associated research challenges are identified.

Abstract:Improving sustainability, enhancing spectral and energy efficiency, and bringing in-network intelligence and reasoning are the driving forces for 6G. In this context, semantic communications (SemCom) and open radio access networks (Open RAN) are emerging as focal points of research. SemCom is widely viewed as a disruptive paradigm that creates the possibility of knowledge-driven networks. On the other hand, Open RAN paves the way for open and programmable networks with native intelligence. This paper investigates the synergies between SemCom and Open RAN and introduces the concept of semantic-aware Open RAN. It presents the main architectural components and functionalities along with some of the key applications of semantic-aware Open RAN. It also conducts demonstration and evaluation of a remote WiFi localization built on semantic-aware Open RAN. Finally, it highlights some open challenges for semantic-aware Open RAN.

Abstract:Radio sensing has become increasingly important, as the demand for “smartness” is drastically increasing. Unlike conventional sensing, radio sensing uses existing radio signals or devices to passively sense the ambient environment for low cost and wide deployment. In this article, a comprehensive overview of radio sensing using the recent fifth-generation (5G) signals is provided. 5G systems have many merits, such as high frequency, large bandwidth, massive antenna array, and dense network, making them ideal for radio sensing. In the overview, basic theories and concepts of 5G radio sensing are first introduced. Then, different state-of-the-art 5G sensing works are discussed based on their applications. These applications show that 5G radio sensing represents a step change in radio sensing. After that, several open challenges in 5G radio sensing are illustrated with relevant insights. These insights manifest that 5G radio sensing has great potentials to explore.
Semantics-Empowered Space-Air-Ground-Sea Integrated Network: New Paradigm, Frameworks, and Challenges

Abstract:In the coming sixth generation (6G) communication era, to provide seamless and ubiquitous connections, the space-air-ground-sea integrated network (SAGSIN) is envisioned to address the challenges of communication coverage in areas with difficult conditions, such as the forest, desert, and sea. Considering the fundamental limitations of the SAGSIN including large-scale scenarios, highly dynamic channels, and limited device capabilities, traditional communications based on Shannon information theory cannot satisfy the communication demands. Moreover, bit-level reconstruction is usually redundant for many human-to-machine or machine-to-machine applications in the SAGSIN. Therefore, it is imperative to consider high-level communications towards semantics exchange, called semantic communications. In this survey, according to the interpretations of the term "semantics", including "significance", "meaning", and "effectiveness-related information", we review state-of-the-art works on semantic communications from three perspectives, which are 1) significance representation and protection, 2) meaning similarity measurement and meaning enhancement, and 3) ultimate effectiveness and effectiveness yielding. Sequentially, three types of semantic communication systems can be correspondingly introduced, namely the significance-oriented, meaning-oriented, and effectiveness/task-oriented semantic communication systems. Implementation of the above three types of systems in the SAGSIN necessitates a new perception-communication-computing-actuation-integrated paradigm (PCCAIP), where all the available perception, computing, and actuation techniques jointly facilitates significance-oriented sampling & transmission, semantic extraction & reconstruction, and task decision. An Architecture for Control Plane Slicing in Beyond 5G Networks

Abstract:To accommodate various use cases with differing characteristics, the Fifth Generation (5G) mobile communications system intends to utilize network slicing. Network slicing enables the creation of multiple logical networks over a shared physical network infrastructure. While the problems such as resource allocation for multiple slices in mobile networks have been explored in considerable detail in the existing literature, the suitability of the existing mobile network architecture to support network slicing has not been analysed adequately. We think the existing 5G System (5GS) architecture suffers from certain limitations, such as a lack of slice isolation in its control plane. This work focuses on the future evolution of the existing 5GS architecture from a slicing perspective, especially that of its control plane, addressing some of the limitations of the existing 5GS architecture. We propose a new network architecture which enables efficient slicing in beyond 5G networks. The proposed architecture results in enhanced modularity and scalability of the control plane in sliced mobile networks. In addition, it also brings slice isolation to the control plane, which is not feasible in the existing 5G system. We also present a performance evaluation that confirms the improved performance and scalability of the proposed system viz a viz the existing 5G system.

Abstract:This white paper explores future localization and sensing opportunities for beyond 5G wireless communication systems by identifying key technology enablers and discussing their underlying challenges, implementation issues, and identifying potential solutions. In addition, we present exciting new opportunities for localization and sensing applications, which will disrupt traditional design principles and revolutionize the way we live, interact with our environment, and do business. Following the trend initiated in the 5G NR systems, 6G will continue to develop towards even higher frequency ranges, wider bandwidths, and massive antenna arrays. In turn, this will enable sensing solutions with very fine range, Doppler and angular resolutions, as well as localization to cm-level degree of accuracy. Moreover, new materials, device types, and reconfigurable surfaces will allow network operators to reshape and control the electromagnetic response of the environment. At the same time, machine learning and artificial intelligence will leverage the unprecedented availability of data and computing resources to tackle the biggest and hardest problems in wireless communication systems. 6G will be truly intelligent wireless systems that will not only provide ubiquitous communication but also empower high accuracy localization and high-resolution sensing services. They will become the catalyst for this revolution by bringing about a unique new set of features and service capabilities, where localization and sensing will coexist with communication, continuously sharing the available resources in time, frequency and space. This white paper concludes by highlighting foundational research challenges, as well as implications and opportunities related to privacy, security, and trust. Addressing these challenges will undoubtedly require an inter-disciplinary and concerted effort from the research community.
AI Empowered Channel Semantic Acquisition for 6G Integrated Sensing and Communication Networks

Abstract:Motivated by the need for increased spectral efficiency and the proliferation of intelligent applications, the sixth-generation (6G) mobile network is anticipated to integrate the dual-functions of communication and sensing (C&S). Although the millimeter wave (mmWave) communication and mmWave radar share similar multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) architecture for integration, the full potential of dual-function synergy remains to be exploited. In this paper, we commence by overviewing state-of-the-art schemes from the aspects of waveform design and signal processing. Nevertheless, these approaches face the dilemma of mutual compromise between C&S performance. To this end, we reveal and exploit the synergy between C&S. In the proposed framework, we introduce a two-stage frame structure and resort artificial intelligence (AI) to achieve the synergistic gain by designing a joint C&S channel semantic extraction and reconstruction network (JCASCasterNet). With just a cost-effective and energy-efficient single sensing antenna, the proposed scheme achieves enhanced overall performance while requiring only limited pilot and feedback signaling overhead. In the end, we outline the challenges that lie ahead in the future development of integrated sensing and communication networks, along with promising directions for further research.

Abstract:With the increasing demand for intelligent services, the sixth-generation (6G) wireless networks will shift from a traditional architecture that focuses solely on high transmission rate to a new architecture that is based on the intelligent connection of everything. Semantic communication (SemCom), a revolutionary architecture that integrates user as well as application requirements and meaning of information into the data processing and transmission, is predicted to become a new core paradigm in 6G. While SemCom is expected to progress beyond the classical Shannon paradigm, several obstacles need to be overcome on the way to a SemCom-enabled smart wireless Internet. In this paper, we first highlight the motivations and compelling reasons of SemCom in 6G. Then, we outline the major 6G visions and key enabler techniques which lay the foundation of SemCom. Meanwhile, we highlight some benefits of SemCom-empowered 6G and present a SemCom-native 6G network architecture. Next, we show the evolution of SemCom from its introduction to classical SemCom related theory and modern AI-enabled SemCom. Following that, focusing on modern SemCom, we classify SemCom into three categories, i.e., semantic-oriented communication, goal-oriented communication, and semantic-aware communication, and introduce three types of semantic metrics. We then discuss the applications, the challenges and technologies related to semantics and communication. Finally, we introduce future research opportunities. In a nutshell, this paper investigates the fundamentals of SemCom, its applications in 6G networks, and the existing challenges and open issues for further direction.

Goal-Oriented Semantic Communications for 6G Networks

Abstract:Upon the arrival of emerging devices, including Extended Reality (XR) and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), the traditional communication framework is approaching Shannon's physical capacity limit and fails to guarantee the massive amount of transmission within latency requirements. By jointly exploiting the context of data and its importance to the task, an emerging communication paradigm shift to semantic level and effectiveness level is envisioned to be a key revolution in Sixth Generation (6G) networks. However, an explicit and systematic communication framework incorporating both semantic level and effectiveness level has not been proposed yet. In this article, we propose a generic goal-oriented semantic communication framework for various tasks with diverse data types, which incorporates both semantic level information and effectiveness-aware performance metrics. We first analyze the unique characteristics of all data types, and summarise the semantic information, along with corresponding extraction methods. We then propose a detailed goal-oriented semantic communication framework for different time-critical and non-critical tasks. In the goal-oriented semantic communication framework, we present the goal-oriented semantic information, extraction methods, recovery methods, and effectiveness-aware performance metrics. Last but not least, we present a goal-oriented semantic communication framework tailored for Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) control task to validate the effectiveness of the proposed goal-oriented semantic communication framework.

Abstract:In recent years, satellite communication has becoming popular and develop very fast around the world. Recently, the fifth-generation mobile communication (5G) is about to enter the commercial use. As key characteristic of the 5G communication system, the integration of satellite communication and ground 5G has become a new hotspot. In this paper, we propose the summary of 5G in space based view, first of all, we introduce the status of 5G communication system, and its convergence to space wireless communication system. Then we analyze the development trends of satellite 5G systems, and then gives the initial idea of satellite 5G fusion, including architecture design, air interface design, based on SDN/NFV network virtualization deployment and protocol optimization, and discussed the possible problems of fusion; finally, the key technologies of satellite 5G fusion are sorted with opportunities and challenges.

Abstract:Cognitive radio is an intelligent communication system that is aware of its environment and can dynamically adapt its operating parameters with the aim of providing an efficient use of the scarce spectrum. The main advantage of cognitive radio technology is its ability to adapt and cooperate with all other wireless technologies such as fifth generation technology, 5G. 5G enabled cognitive radio technology provides accelerated communication performance in accordance with spectrum efficiency and energy efficiency. 5G enabled cognitive radio proposes system interoperability and integration of communication system through cognition. Social networking is a common communication media among internet users connected by one or more relationships. Large numbers of internet users share their experiences and thoughts through social networking web sites. Semantic analysis is defined as the process of drawing meaning from text. In this paper, a fuzzy logic based semantic analysis is performed for the estimation of comment content in 5G enabled cognitive radio based social networks. In social networks, the positive comments posted by the users have the positive influence for the members to examine related comments. The comment content posted by the users is decided to be positive or negative with the help of fuzzy logic based semantic analysis approach. In this regard, the relevant interpretation can be positive or negative based on the input parameters in the fuzzy logic system. Our 5G enabled cognitive radio technology based semantic analysis approach with fuzzy logic system can be utilized in many social networks, taking superior accuracy results of 93% into account.

Abstract:Future wireless networks will integrate sensing, learning and communication to provide new services beyond communication and to become more resilient. Sensors at the network infrastructure, sensors on the user equipment, and the sensing capability of the communication signal itself provide a new source of data that connects the physical and radio frequency environments. A wireless network that harnesses all these sensing data can not only enable additional sensing services, but also become more resilient to channel-dependent effects like blockage and better support adaptation in dynamic environments as networks reconfigure. In this paper, we provide a vision for integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) networks and an overview of how signal processing, optimization and machine learning techniques can be leveraged to make them a reality in the context of 6G. We also include some examples of the performance of several of these strategies when evaluated using a simulation framework based on a combination of ray tracing measurements and mathematical models that mix the digital and physical worlds.
