Abstract:In this paper we prove gap theorems in Yang-Mills theory for complete four-dimensional manifolds with a weighted Poincaré inequality. We apply the theorems to many examples of manifolds. We also prove a uniqueness theorem for the basic instanton.

Abstract:In this paper we prove gap theorems in Yang-Mills theory for complete four-dimensional manifolds with positive Yamabe constant. We extend the results of Gursky-Kelleher-Streets to complete manifolds. We also describe the equality in the gap theorem in terms of the basic instanton, which is interesting even for compact manifolds.

Abstract:An n-dimensional lambda-hypersurface X : M -> Rn+1 is the critical point of the weighted area functional integral(M) e(-1/4|X|2) d mu for weighted volume-preserving variations, which is also a generalization of the self-shrinking solution of the mean curvature flow. We first prove that if the L-n-norm of the second fundamental form of the lambda-hypersurface X : M -> Rn+1 with n >= 3 is less than an explicit positive constant K(n, lambda), then M is a hyperplane. Secondly, we show that if the L-n-norm of the trace-free second fundamental form of M with n >= 3 is less than an explicit positive constant D(n, lambda) and the mean curvature is suitably bounded, then M is a hyperplane. We also obtain similar results for lambda-surfaces in R-3 under L-4-curvature pinching conditions.

Abstract:Let M be an n (>= 7)-dimensional complete submanifold with parallel mean curvature in the hyperbolic space Hn+p, whose mean curvature satisfies H-2-1 <= 0. Denote by angstrom and B-R(q) the trace free second fundamental form of M and the geodesic ball of radius R centered at q is an element of M, respectively. We prove that if lim(R ->infinity) sup integral(vertical bar angstrom vertical bar 2dM)(BR(q))/R-2 and if (integral(M)vertical bar angstrom vertical bar(n) dM)(2/n) + 2n(n-2)/3 root n(n-1) H(integral(M)vertical bar angstrom vertical bar(n/2)dM)(2/n) <= C(n), then M is congruent to an n-dimensional hyperbolic space or the Euclidean space R-n. Abstract:I provide a new idea based on geometric analysis to obtain a positive mass gap in pure non-abelian renormalizable Yang-Mills theory. The orbit space, that is the space of connections of Yang-Mills theory modulo gauge transformations, is equipped with a Riemannian metric that naturally arises from the kinetic part of reduced classical action and admits a positive definite sectional curvature. The corresponding regularized Bakry-Émery Ricci curvature (if positive) is shown to produce a mass gap for 2+1 and 3+1 dimensional Yang-Mills theory assuming the existence of a quantized Yang-Mills theory on (R 1+2 , η ) and (R 1+3 , η ), respectively. My result on the gap calculation, described at least as a heuristic one, applies to non-abelian Yang-Mills theory with any compact semi-simple Lie group in the aforementioned dimensions. In 2+1 dimensions, the square of the Yang-Mils coupling constant has the dimension of mass, and therefore the spectral gap of the Hamiltonian is essentially proportional to with proportionality constant being purely numerical as expected. Due to the dimensional restriction on 3+1 dimensional Yang-Mills theory, it seems one ought to introduce a length scale to obtain an energy scale. It turns out that a certain 'trace' operation on the infinite-dimensional geometry naturally introduces a length scale that has to be fixed by measuring the energy of the lowest glu-ball state. However, this remains to be understood in a rigorous way.

This makes it impossible to define the main observables for these theories—the Wilson loop observables—in dimensions greater than two, because line integrals of the GFF do not exist in such dimensions. Taking forward a proposal of Charalambous and Gross, this article shows that it is possible to define Euclidean Yang–Mills theories on the 3D unit torus as 'random distributional gauge orbits', provided that they indeed behave like the GFF in a certain sense. One of the main technical tools is the existence of the Yang–Mills heat flow on the 3D torus starting from GFF-like initial data, which is established in a companion paper. A key consequence of this construction is that under the GFF assumption, one can define a notion of 'regularized Wilson loop observables' for Euclidean Yang–Mills theories on the 3D unit torus.

Gap Theorem on Riemannian manifolds using Ricci flow

Abstract:In this work, we use the Ricci flow approach to study the gap phenomenon of Riemannian manifolds with non-negative curvature and sub-critical scaling invariant curvature decay. The first main result is a quantitative Ricci flow existence theory without non-collapsing assumption. We use it to show that complete non-compact manifolds with non-negative complex sectional curvature and sufficiently small average curvature decay are necessarily flat. The second main result concerns three-manifolds with non-negative Ricci curvature of quadratic decay. By combining our newly established curvature estimate and method in Kähler geometry, we show that if the curvature decays slightly faster even in average sense, the manifold must be flat. This strengthens a result of Reiris. In the compact case, we use the Ricci flow regularization to generalize the celebrated Gromov-Ruh Theorem in this direction.

Topological indices of general relativity and Yang-Mills theory in four-dimensional space-time

Abstract:This report investigates general relativity and the Yang-Mills theory in four-dimensional space-time using a common mathematical framework, the Chern--Weil theory for principal bundles. The whole theory is described owing to the fibre bundle with the $GL(4)$ symmetry by twisting several principal bundles with the gauge symmetry. In addition to the principal connection, we introduce the Hodge-dual connection into the Lagrangian to make gauge fields have dynamics independent from the Bianchi identity. We show that the duplex superstructure appears in the bundle when a $\mathbb{Z}_2$-grading operator exists in the total space of the bundle in general. The Dirac operator appears in the secondary superspace using the one-dimensional Clifford algebra, and it provides topological indices from the Atiyah--Singer index theorem. Though the topological index is usually discussed in the elliptic-type manifold, this report treats it in the hyperbolic type space-time manifold using a novel method, namely the $\theta$-metric space. The $\theta$-metric treats the Euclidean and Minkowski spaces simultaneously and defines the topological index in the Minkowski space-time.

Positive mass gap of quantum Yang-Mills Fields

Abstract:We construct a 4-dimensional quantum field theory on a Hilbert space, dependent on a simple Lie Algebra of a compact Lie group, that satisfies Wightman's axioms. This Hilbert space can be written as a countable sum of non-separable Hilbert spaces, each indexed by a non-trivial, inequivalent irreducible representation of the Lie Algebra. In each component Hilbert space, a state is given by a triple, a space-like rectangular surface $S$ in $\mathbb{R}^4$, a measurable section of the Lie Algebra bundle over this surface $S$, represented irreducibly as a matrix, and a Minkowski frame. The inner product is associated with the area of the surface $S$. In our previous work, we constructed a Yang-Mills measure for a compact semi-simple gauge group. We will use a Yang-Mills path integral to quantize the momentum and energy in this theory. During the quantization process, renormalization techniques and asymptotic freedom will be used. Each component Hilbert space is the eigenspace for the momentum operator and Hamiltonian, and the corresponding Hamiltonian eigenvalue is given by the quadratic Casimir operator. The eigenvalue of the corresponding momentum operator will be shown to be strictly less than the eigenvalue of the Hamiltonian, hence showing the existence of a positive mass gap in each component Hilbert space. We will further show that the infimum of the set containing positive mass gaps, each indexed by an irreducible representation, is strictly positive. In the last section, we will show how the positive mass gap will imply the Clustering Theorem.

Willmore-type inequalities for closed hypersurfaces in weighted manifolds

Abstract:In this paper, we prove some Willmore-type inequalities for closed hypersurfaces in weighted manifolds with nonnegative Bakry-Émery Ricci curvature. In particular, we get a sharp Willmore type inequality steady gradient Ricci solitons. We also prove a sharp Willmore-like inequality in shrinking gradient Ricci solitons. Moreover, we characterize the equality cases of our Willmore-type inequalities. These results can be regarded as generalizations of Agostiniani-Fogagnolo-Mazzieri's Willmore-type inequality to weighted manifolds. As applications, we derive some isoperimetric type inequalities under certain existence assumptions of isoperimetric regions in weighted manifolds.

Abstract:In this paper we first use the result in $[12]$ to remove the assumption of the $L^2$ boundedness of Weyl curvature in the gap theorem in $[9]$ and then obtain a gap theorem for a class of conformally compact Einstein manifolds with very large renormalized volume. We also uses the blow-up method to derive curvature estimates for conformally compact Einstein manifolds with large renormalized volume. The second part of this paper is on conformally compact Einstein manifolds with conformal infinities of large Yamabe constants. Based on the idea in $[15]$ we manage to give the complete proof of the relative volume inequality $(1.9)$ on conformally compact Einstein manifolds. Therefore we obtain the complete proof of the rigidity theorem for conformally compact Einstein manifolds in general dimensions with no spin structure assumption (cf. $[29, 15]$) as well as the new curvature pinch estimates for conformally compact Einstein manifolds with conformal infinities of very large Yamabe constant. We also derive the curvature estimates for conformally compact Einstein manifolds with conformal infinities of large Yamabe constant.

Abstract:We extend an $L^{2}$-energy gap of Yang-Mills connections on principal $G$-bundles $P$ over a compact Riemannian manfold with a $good$ Riemannian metric to the case of a compact Kähler surface with a $generic$ Kähler metric $g$, which guarantees that all ASD connections on the principal bundle $P$ over $X$ are irreducible.

Morse theory for the Yang-Mills energy function near flat connections

Abstract:A result (Corollary 4.3) in an article by Uhlenbeck (1985) asserts that the $W^{1,p}$-distance between the gauge-equivalence class of a connection $A$ and the moduli subspace of flat connections $M(P)$ on a principal $G$-bundle $P$ over a closed Riemannian manifold $X$ of dimension $d\geq 2$ is bounded by a constant times the $L^p$ norm of the curvature, $\|F_A\|_{L^p(X)}$, when $G$ is a compact Lie group, $F_A$ is $L^p$-small, and $p>d/2$. While we prove that this estimate holds when the Yang-Mills energy function on the space of Sobolev connections is Morse-Bott along the moduli subspace $M(P)$ of flat connections, it does not hold when the Yang-Mills energy function fails to be Morse-Bott, such as at the product connection in the moduli space of flat $\mathrm{SU}(2)$ connections over a real two-dimensional torus. However, we prove that a useful modification of Uhlenbeck's estimate always holds provided one replaces $\|F_A\|_{L^p(X)}$ by a suitable power $\|F_A\|_{L^p(X)}^\lambda$, where the positive exponent $\lambda$ reflects the structure of non-regular points in $M(P)$. The proof of our refinement involves gradient flow and Morse theory for the Yang-Mills energy function on the quotient space of Sobolev connections and a Lojasiewicz distance inequality for the Yang-Mills energy function. A special case of our estimate, when $X$ has dimension four and the connection $A$ is anti-self-dual, was proved by Fukaya (1998) by entirely different methods. Lastly, we prove that if $A$ is a smooth Yang-Mills connection with small enough energy, then $A$ is necessarily flat.

Abstract:The Yang-Mills functional over a Riemann surface is studied from the point of view of Morse theory. The main result is that this is a ‘perfect' functional provided due account is taken of its gauge symmetry. This enables topological conclusions to be drawn about the critical sets and leads eventually to information about the moduli space of algebraic bundles over the Riemann surface. This in turn depends on the interplay between the holomorphic and unitary structures, which is analysed in detail.

Abstract:We study solutions to the Yang–Mills–Higgs equations on the maximal Cauchy development of the data given on a ball of radius R in . The energy of the data could be infinite and the solution grows at most inverse polynomially in as . As applications, we derive pointwise decay estimates for Yang–Mills–Higgs fields in the future of a hyperboloid or in the Minkowski space for data bounded in the weighted energy space with weights . Moreover, for the abelian case of Maxwell–Klein–Gordon system, we extend the small data result of Lindblad and Sterbenz (IMRP Int Math Res Pap 109:1687-3017, 2006) to general large data (under same assumptions but without any smallness). The proof is gauge independent and it is based on the framework of Eardley and Moncrief (Commun Math Phys 83(2):171–191, 1982a, 1982b) together with the geometric Kirchhoff–Sobolev parametrix constructed by Klainerman and Rodnianski (J Hyperbolic Differ Equ 4(3):401–433, 2007). The new ingredient is a class of weighted energy estimates through backward light cones adapted to the initial data.
