Abstract:We study the synchronization and stability of power grids within the Kuramoto phase oscillator model with inertia with a bimodal frequency distribution representing the generators and the loads. We identify critical nodes through solitary frequency deviations and Lyapunov vectors corresponding to unstable Lyapunov exponents. To cure dangerous deviations from synchronization we propose time-delayed feedback control, which is an efficient control concept in nonlinear dynamic systems. Different control strategies are tested and compared with respect to the minimum number of controlled nodes required to achieve synchronization and Lyapunov stability. As a proof of principle, this fast-acting control method is demonstrated using a model of the German power transmission grid.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper attempts to solve the problems of synchronization and stability in power networks. Specifically, the author studied the synchronization and stability between generators and loads with a bimodal frequency distribution under the Kuramoto phase oscillator model (including the inertia term). The bimodal frequency distribution represents generators and loads in power networks. The author introduced a time - delay feedback control method to correct synchronization deviation and improve the stability of the system. This method aims to reduce the number of nodes that need to be controlled in order to achieve synchronization and Lyapunov stability in power networks. The paper also explored the effects of different control strategies, especially their applications in the German and Italian power transmission networks. ### Main problems 1. **Synchronization and stability**: - Study the synchronization and stability of power networks under the Kuramoto model. - Identify key nodes, which are determined by the Lyapunov vectors corresponding to the isolated - frequency deviation and the unstable Lyapunov index. 2. **Time - delay feedback control**: - Propose a time - delay feedback control method to correct synchronization deviation. - Test and compare different control strategies to determine the minimum number of control nodes required to achieve synchronization and Lyapunov stability. 3. **Practical applications**: - Verify the effectiveness of this control method in the German and Italian power transmission networks. - Consider the extended Kuramoto model, including voltage dynamics, so as to consider the electrodynamic behavior of machines. ### Specific problems - **Maintenance of synchronization state**: In normal operation, all frequencies in the power network should be equal to the nominal frequency (50 or 60 Hz), and the steady - state power flow balances supply and demand. - **Impact of desynchronization**: When part of the power network is desynchronized, destructive power oscillations will occur, causing equipment to be shut down, which may lead to cascading failures and ultimately result in large - scale power outages. - **System stability**: Study the relationship between network topology and local stability, especially how to improve the overall stability of the system by controlling key nodes. ### Methods - **Kuramoto model**: Describe the phase and frequency dynamics of synchronous machines in power networks. - **Time - delay feedback control**: An efficient control method commonly used in nonlinear dynamic systems to correct desynchronization and improve stability. - **Lyapunov analysis**: Evaluate the stability of the system by calculating Lyapunov indices and Lyapunov vectors. ### Results - **Recovery of synchronization state**: By controlling a small number of key nodes, the synchronization state can be effectively restored and the stability of the system can be improved. - **Comparison of control strategies**: Different control strategies have different effects on synchronization and stability, among which the strategy based on Lyapunov vector ranking has the best effect. ### Formulas - **Kuramoto model**: \[ \ddot{\theta}_i+\alpha\dot{\theta}_i = \frac{P_i}{I_i\omega_G}+\frac{K}{I_i\omega_G}\sum_{j = 1}^N A_{ij}\sin(\theta_j-\theta_i) \] where \(\theta_i(t)\) and \(\dot{\theta}_i(t)\) represent the phase and frequency of node \(i\) respectively, \(P_i\) is the net power generation or consumption of node \(i\), \(I_i\) is the moment of inertia, \(\omega_G\) is the reference frequency, \(K\) is the coupling strength, and \(A_{ij}\) is the adjacency matrix. - **Time - delay feedback control**: \[ \ddot{\theta}_i+\alpha\dot{\theta}_i=\frac{P_i}{I\omega_G}+\frac{K}{I\omega_G}\sum_{j = 1}^N A_{ij}\sin(\theta_j-\theta_i)-g_i\alpha\tau[\theta_i(t)-\theta
