Abstract:Determining the microstructure of colloidal suspensions under shear flows has been a challenge for theoretical and computational methods due to the singularly-perturbed boundary-layer nature of the problem. Previous approaches have been limited to the case of hard-sphere systems and suffer from various limitations in their applicability. We present a new analytic scheme based on intermediate asymptotics which solves the Smoluchowski diffusion-convection equation including both intermolecular and hydrodynamic interactions. The method is able to recover previous results for the hard-sphere fluid and, for the first time, to predict the radial distribution function (rdf) of attractive fluids such as the Lennard-Jones (LJ) fluid. In particular, a new depletion effect is predicted in the rdf of the LJ fluid under shear. This method can be used for the theoretical modelling and understanding of real fluids subjected to flow, with applications ranging from chemical systems to colloids, rheology, plasmas, and atmospherical science.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is how the microstructure of colloidal suspensions changes under shear - flow conditions. Specifically, the author proposes a new analytical method based on the intermediate asymptotic theory to solve the Smoluchowski diffusion - convection equation that includes intermolecular interactions and hydrodynamic interactions. This method can recover the existing results of hard - sphere fluids and, for the first time, predicts the radial distribution function (rdf) of attractive fluids (such as Lennard - Jones fluids) under shear - flow conditions. In particular, this method predicts a new depletion effect of LJ fluids under shear flow.
### Background and Motivation
- **Theoretical Challenges**: Determining the microstructure of colloidal suspensions under shear - flow conditions is a challenge for both theoretical and computational methods because this problem has the nature of a singularly perturbed boundary layer.
- **Limitations of Existing Research**: Previous methods were mainly limited to hard - sphere systems and had various limitations in applicability.
- **Practical Applications**: Understanding the influence of shear flow on the microstructure of fluids is very important for theoretical modeling and understanding in many fields, from chemical systems to colloids, rheology, plasma, and atmospheric science.
### Research Methods
- **Smoluchowski Equation**: The author uses the Smoluchowski diffusion - convection equation to describe the microstructure of colloidal suspensions under shear - flow conditions.
- **Intermediate Asymptotic Theory**: By introducing the intermediate asymptotic theory, the author develops a new analytical method to solve the Smoluchowski equation.
- **Radial Distribution Function**: The radial distribution function (rdf) describes the probability distribution of particles at a specific distance around a reference particle.
### Main Contributions
- **New Analytical Method**: A new analytical method based on the intermediate asymptotic theory is proposed, which can handle fluids with complex interactions.
- **Predict New Effects**: For the first time, predicts the depletion effect of LJ fluids under shear flow.
- **Wide Applicability**: This method is not only applicable to hard - sphere systems but can also be extended to systems with other important interaction potentials (such as Debye - Hückel potential).
### Results
- **Hard - Sphere System Verification**: The effectiveness of this method in hard - sphere systems is verified by comparing with Stokesian dynamics simulation data.
- **LJ Fluid Prediction**: For LJ fluids, when the Péclet number is large, the influence of shear flow is dominant; when the Péclet number is small, the role of the LJ potential becomes significant, affecting the shape of the radial distribution function.
### Significance
- **Theoretical Breakthrough**: This method breaks through the existing paradigm of hard - sphere systems and provides a new framework for dealing with interacting particles.
- **Practical Applications**: This method can be used to study the behavior of complex fluids under shear - flow conditions, providing new tools for rheology, atmospheric science, etc.
In conclusion, this paper solves the theoretical problem of the microstructure of colloidal suspensions under shear - flow conditions by proposing a new analytical method and provides an important theoretical basis for future related research.
