Abstract:A simple analytical method is introduced to calculate the sensitivity of Coriolis mass flowmeter (CMF). The definition of the sensitivity is further developed based on the reciprocity principle, through employing two approaches: selecting the moment when the displacement of drive point is zero as the calculation moment; reducing the degree of high-order static indeterminacy by taking a half of the structure due to symmetry in structure and anti-symmetry in load. With these approaches, the method can be used to calculate sensitivities for the flowmeters with any shaped tubes and anywhere detected positions; thus, provides theory basis for tube shape design and detected positions determination. Detail analytical calculations for typical Straight-Circle-joint-shaped CMFs are illustrated. The method is validated on a published U-CMF and then, is further illustrated and experimentally validated through predicting the most sensitive detected point for a narrowed-U-CMF.
An Experiment-Based Comparative Investigation of Correlations for Microtube Gas Flow

Abstract:An experimental system was built to measure the gas (nitrogen and helium) flow characteristics in circular microchannels with diameters of 50, 20 and 5 μm. The Reynolds number of the flow was controlled in the large range of 15 to 2550. The highest Mach number could reach a magnitude of 0.625 and the highest Knudsen number was over 0.021. Four available empirical correlations were comparatively studied, in terms of the influence from compressibility and rarefaction. The accuracy of each correlation was investigated, and qualitative explanations were given according to the essence of fluid dynamics. The compressibility is found to be the dominant parameter in the experiments carried out. The results obtained by gas flow in holey optical fibres are helpful for the design of micro-scale pulse tube cryocoolers.

Abstract:Liquid-Gas two-phase flow causes measurement error in Coriolis flow meters.The topic has been studied by researchers including working out mathematical models, doing real flow tests in laboratories or industry.In this paper, we study the 'bubble model' again, which is often referred to in two-phase flow model for Coriolis flow meters.Using the concept of Archimedes buoyant principle, we obtain a different result from Landau's for acceleration ratio of a sphere bubble in a vibrating ideal fluid.Thus measurement error model of two-phase flow for Coriolis flow meters is re-discussed.On the other hand, data of flowrate measurement errors ( m  ) abstracted from a number of references are plotted.It was found that most of the data falling within a region of between 0 m   and 1-m     , which is in agreement with the theory deduced in this paper.

Abstract:The flow parameter measurement of the gas-liquid two-phase flow in small channels is very crucial and challenging in both academia and industry. Conventional techniques based on radiations, optics, acoustics, or electrics most lose their superiorities in the scenario with small channels due to the spatial limitation and the online and contactless measurement requirements. In addition, the conductive characteristic of the two-phase flow is equivalent to an impedance rather than a resistance due to the existence of multi-phases. The equivalent impedance information of the two-phase flow, especially the imaginary part, is promising to provide more flowing details but has seldom been detected or analyzed. In this paper, a method for the void fraction measurement of bubble/slug flow in small channels is proposed. The method implements void fraction measurement in a contactless way, based on the acquisition of the total impedance information of the gas-liquid two-phase flow. First, a new contactless impedance detection sensor is designed, based on the simulated inductor technique and the analog phase sensitive demodulation technique, to obtain the complete equivalent impedance information of the two-phase fluid. Then, based on the flow pattern identification result, the void fraction measurement model is developed, which is a fusion of the relationships between the void fraction and the real part/the imaginary part of the equivalent impedance information, respectively. Experimental results on prototypes with different inner diameters (2.48, 3.64, and 4.52 mm, respectively) validate the effectiveness of the proposed void fraction method. The maximum void fraction measurement biases are within 5.0%.

Abstract:The effect of a bubble on the virtual current of an electromagnetic flow meter is studied numerically with the bubble at various positions along the pipe axis of the flow meter. To solve the distribution of the virtual current, a two-dimensional (2D) assumption is used. The domain is divided into sub-domains. In each of the sub-domains, the potential of the virtual current is expressed in series with unknown coefficients. An alternating method is used to find the unknowns. Various bubble sizes and bubble positions along the pipe axis of the flow meter are considered in the calculation. The change of the virtual current caused by the existence of the bubble is evaluated using deviation and asymmetry.

Abstract:The distribution of virtual current in an electromagnetic flow meter is an important aspect in the theory of electromagnetic-induction flow measurement. In this paper, the virtual current in the two-dimensional domain with a number of bubbles is obtained by a semi-analytical method. The bubbles can be of any number, any radius and any position within the domain as long as they are circular and do not overlap. An example is given for the three-bubble case. The calculation method and the numerical accuracy are shown. The extension of the method to the three-dimensional problem is also discussed.

Abstract:Certain nonlinear influences are found in dual-tube Coriolis mass flowmeters (CMFs). According to experimentation, a nonlinearity dominated by frequency-doubling signals can be observed in the measuring signal. In general, such nonlinear effects are simplified as linear systems or neglected through processing. In this paper, a simplified model has been constructed for dual-beam CMFs based on the theory of nonlinear dynamics, with the spring–damper system as the medium for the dual-beam coupled vibrations. Next, the dynamics differential equation of the coupled vibrations is set up on the basis of the Lagrangian equation. Furthermore, numerical solutions are obtained using the Runge–Kutta fourth-order method. The study then fits discrete points of the numerical solutions, which are converted into the frequency domain to observe the existence of frequency-doubling signal components. Our findings show that frequency-doubling components exist in the spectrogram, proving that these nonlinear influences are a result of the motions of coupled vibrations. In this study, non-linear frequency-doubling signal sources are qualitatively analyzed to formulate a theoretical basis for CMFs design.

Abstract:Abstract Air-bubble curtain is an amount of air injected vertically into a water body. The generation of such a flow and the lack of a continuous interface cannot be described by a smooth mathematical function. Therefore, a two-phase flow model is introduced. A numerical model for the concurrent flow of buoyant bubbles continuously flowing into a 2D water field, and the water flow (generated by the bubbles), is formulated and solved. The two-phase flow model consists of the 2D Navier equations for the water phase (continuous phase) and of the active Lagrangian particles for the simulation of the air bubbles (discrete phase). The coupling of the two phases is done through the continuity and the momentum equilibriums. The numerical solution by explicit second-order Finite Differences (FD) scheme leads from a cold start to steady flow conditions, resolving for the water velocities vector field and the air bubbles’ concentration distribution. The flow configuration is repeated in laboratory conditions, and the velocity field is measured by the particle image velocimetry (PIV) technique. In this work, the numerical two-phase flow model and the hardware aspects of our measurement device are analyzed, followed by the comparison of the numerical and experimental results. This empowers the validity and credibility of the algorithm introduced. Finally, interesting conclusions are drawn regarding the operational use of the model.
Bubble Dynamics in a Narrow Gap Flow under the Influence of Pressure Gradient and Shear Flow

Abstract:The volume-of-flow method combined with the Rayleigh–Plesset equation is well established for the computation of cavitation, i.e., the generation and transportation of vapor bubbles inside a liquid flow resulting in cloud, sheet or streamline cavitation. There are, however, limitations, if this method is applied to a restricted flow between two adjacent walls and the bubbles’ size is of the same magnitude as that of the clearance between the walls. This work presents experimental and numerical results of the bubble generation and its transportation in a Couette-type flow under the influence of shear and a strong pressure gradient which are typical for journal bearings or hydraulic seals. Under the impact of variations of the film thickness, the VoF method produces reliable results if bubble diameters are less than half the clearance between the walls. For larger bubbles, the wall contact becomes significant and the bubbles adopt an elliptical shape forced by the shear flow and under the influence of a strong pressure gradient. Moreover, transient changes in the pressure result in transient cavitation, which is captured by high-speed imaging providing material to evaluate transient, three-dimensional computations of a two-phase flow.

Abstract:A numerical model is used to simulate free surface shallow water flow over bottom topographical features. The model, in which turbulence closure is achieved at the level of the turbulence energy equation, allows for the inclusion of both the hydrostatic and hydrodynamic contributions to the pressure field and, accordingly, is successful in reproducing flow separation on the downstream side of an asymmetrical sandwave structure. Experiments are described in which the geometrical and flow parameters are chosen so as to correspond to recently reported flume and field observational studies. The experimental flume studies represent a particularly detailed and well-conducted determination of mean and turbulent flow properties in highly controlled laboratory conditions. Good overall agreement is found between the model and experimental evaluations of the mean fluid velocity, the turbulence energy, the kinematical shear stress and the extent of the flow separation zone. The second application of the model involves a comparison with a recently acquired field data set based on observations made in the Taw Estuary, Devon, England. In addition to measuring the dynamical properties of the flow, a determination was also made of suspended sediment concentrations. With appropriate modification to the model, evaluations of concentration profiles are also compared with those obtained in the field observations. The overall agreement is again of an encouraging quality thus lending support to the application of the numerical model in different coastal environments.

Abstract:Micro- and nanoscale gas flows are analyzed theoretically and numerically. The analyses of gas flow similarity show that the gas flows at different scales can be similar only when the gas is treated as a prefect gas. If the gas density is so high that the density effect cannot be ignored, the three dimensionless parameters, Re, Ma, and Kn, which characterize the micro gas flow, are independent of each other and cannot be equal for flows at different scales, so the similarity breaks down. The critical density for the similarity failure can be analytically determined for each kind of gas. The analytical results were validated by numerical simulations. High density, high Knudsen number gas flows were modeled using a generalized Monte Carlo method based on the Enskog theory which considers both the density effect on the collision rate and the molecular repulsive and attractive interactions for a Lennard–Jones gas. The predicted transport coefficients agree better with experimental data than previous predictions. The simulation results show that when the gas density is higher than the critical density, the denseness effect alters the flow velocity and temperature fields from the direct simulation Monte Carlo results. Higher densities lead to greater deviation.
Similarity of Ideal Gas Flow at Different Scales

Abstract:The similarity of ideal gas flow at different scales is investigated analytically and numerically. With the compressible and rarefied effects considered, two dimensionless parameters, Mach number and Knudsen number, are proposed as the similarity criterions, because the Reynolds number can be expressed by the Mach number and the Knudsen number of ideal gases. A DSMC method is used to simulate flows at different scales with the same Ma and Kn, including subsonic channel flows and the supersonic flows over a hot plate. Comparisons between the results of different scales show that the normalized fields of macroscopic quantities are the same. This confirms the similarity. Especially, the results indicate that the micro flow are similar to the rarefied flow of ideal gas, which suggests that many transformations are available from the existing rarefied flow results to the micro flow.
Noise induced effects in the axisymmetric spherical Couette flow

Abstract:We study the axisymmetric, wide gap, spherical Couette flow in the presence of noise in numerical simulations and experiments. Such studies are important because most of the flows in nature are subjected to random fluctuations. Noise is introduced into the flow by adding fluctuations to the inner sphere rotation which are random in time with zero mean. Flows of a viscous incompressible fluid are induced either by rotation of the inner sphere only or by the co-rotation of the spheres. Mean flow generation was found to occur under the action of additive noise. A higher relative amplification of meridional kinetic energy compared to the azimuthal component was also observed under certain conditions. Calculated flow velocities were validated by laser Doppler anemometer measurements. A model is proposed to elucidate the rapid growth of meridional kinetic energy for flows induced by varying the co-rotation of the spheres. Our linear stability analysis for flows induced by the rotation of the inner sphere revealed a decrease in the critical Reynolds number, corresponding to the onset of the first instability. Also, in this case, a local minimum of the mean flow generation on approaching the critical Reynolds number was observed, which is consistent with the available theoretical predictions. Abstract:In this article we study Chen's flow of curves from theoreical and numerical perspectives. We investigate two settings: that of closed immersed $\omega$-circles, and immersed lines satisfying a cocompactness condition. In each of the settings our goal is to find geometric conditions that allow us to understand the global behaviour of the flow: for the cocompact case, the condition is straightforward and the argument is largely standard. For the closed case however, the argument is quite complex. The flow shrinks every initial curve to a point if it does not become singular beforehand, and we must identify a condition to ensure this behaviour as well as identify the point in order to perform the requisite rescaling. We are able to successfully conduct a full analysis of the rescaling under a curvature condition. The analysis resembles the case of the mean curvature flow more than other fourth-order curvature flow such as the elastic flow or the curve diffusion flow, despite the lack of maximum and comparison principles. Our work is informed by a numerical study of the flow, and we include a section that explains the algorithms used and gives some further simulations.

Numerical study of cavitation bubble dynamics in a flowing tube

Abstract:Cavitation in tubes is a common occurrence in nature and engineering applications. Previous studies of cavitation bubble dynamics mainly consider bubbles in stagnant-water tubes, but the dynamics of cavitation bubbles in tubes with flow is not clear. This study investigates the dynamics of cavitation bubbles in tubes with flow by numerical simulations. The results show that, unlike bubbles in stagnant-water tubes, bubbles under the combined effects of water inflow and tube wall confinement exhibit asymmetric behavior along the axis of the tube. The inflow suppresses the development of the bubble interface near the tube inlet, causing that side of the interface to move with the inflow. In contrast, the expansion and contraction of the bubble and the generation of liquid jets occur on the side near the outlet. This feature results in significant asymmetry in the bubble interface, therefore we introduce a skewness parameter to characterize the difference in length between the left and right parts of the bubble during the bubble evolution. The evolution of the bubble significantly affects the mass flow rate at the outlet of the tube, and even leads to backflow during the bubble contraction process.

Abstract:A differential pressure flowmeter with double-cone structure was designed and employed to measure air-water two-phase flow. Five double-cone flowmeters with different equivalent diameter ratios of 0.840, 0.780, 0.697, 0.586 and 0.424 were manufactured and their measurement characteristics were analyzed. Experiments were carried out for the flowrate measurement of the air-water two-phase flow on a horizontal multiphase flow facility by using this flowmeter. A good linear relationship between the prospective gas flow ratio and the Lockhart-Martinelli number was investigated through analysis of the experimental data. Total mass flowrate model of double-cone flowmeter for air-water two-phase flow was established based on the Bizon model. The James model, separated flow model, Murdock model and Lin model were also applied to measure total mass flowrate of the air-water two-phase flow, and the measurement errors were analyzed and compared. The experimental results show that the total mass flowrate measurement error of the proposed model can be within 6% by using the new double-cone flowmeters. Compared with other models, the proposed model is more suitable for the double-cone flowmeter.

Abstract:Ultrasonic flowmeters are widely used for flow measurement. We proposed a theoretical model to quantify the measurement error caused by the deviation of ultrasonic propagation trajectory in complex flow regimes. The three-dimensional ultrasonic propagation model is based on the assumption of ray acoustics. The results show that the trajectory offset of ultrasonic waves and velocity measurement errors in a three-dimensional non-uniform flow field is of the first order of the Mach number. Unlike gas flow, the Mach number of open channel flow is small, and the velocity measurement error of open channel ultrasonic flowmeter can be safely ignored.

Abstract:A common aspect of intrusive and non-intrusive velocity instruments is that they sample the flow over a finite volume and report the time-averaged measurements in the volume's center. The presence of a velocity gradient in the measurement volume shifts the effective location of the reported quantity toward the high-velocity region. The reported quantity differs from the actual velocity in the measurement volume center commensurate with the size of the measurement volume, the direction and rate of the gradient, and the number of sample velocities. The paper analytically quantifies the bias in the location and magnitude of the mean velocity and turbulent intensities reported by instruments acquiring velocities in regions with velocity gradients. Procedures for bias removal/minimization and for estimating uncertainties due to the velocity gradient are described for several velocity distributions in open channel turbulent flows.

Abstract:Based on the theory of electromagnetic induction flow measurement, the Laplace equation in a complicated three-dimensional (3D) domain is solved by an alternating method. Virtual current potentials are obtained for an electromagnetic flow meter with one spherical bubble inside. The solutions are used to investigate the effects of bubble size and bubble position on the virtual current. Comparisons are done among the cases of 2D and 3D models, and of point electrode and large electrode. The results show that the 2D model overestimates the effect, while large electrodes are least sensitive to the bubble. This paper offers fundamentals for the study of the behavior of an electromagnetic flow meter in multiphase flow. For application, the results provide a possible way to estimate errors of the flow meter caused by multiphase flow.
