Abstract:We present results of first-principles calculations of the magnetic properties of Fe chains deposited on the Re(0001) surface. By increasing the length of the chain, a transition is found from an almost collinear antiferromagnetic state for a 5-atom-long chain to a spin spiral state with the rotational plane slightly tilted from the surface of the substrate for the 15-atom-long chain. It is shown that a classical spin model derived from the ab initio calculations containing only two-spin interactions supports opposite chirality of the spin spiral compared to a direct optimization of the spin configuration within the ab initio method. The differences between the results of the two methods can be understood by introducing chiral four-spin interactions in the spin model.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper aims to solve the magnetic structure problem of single - atom Fe chains on the Re(0001) surface, especially to study the transition from an almost collinear antiferromagnetic state to a spin - spiral state as the chain length increases. Specifically, the paper attempts to understand why the spin configuration optimized directly based on first - principles calculations has the opposite spin - spiral chirality to that predicted by the classical spin model containing only two - spin interactions, and to explain this difference by introducing four - spin chiral interactions. ### Background of the Paper In recent years, the research on magnetic atom clusters on non - magnetic surfaces has provided new prospects for information storage and transmission at the nanoscale. The magnetic anisotropy and the interactions between magnetic atoms (such as Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya (DM) interactions) in these systems have an important impact on the magnetic state. The DM interaction is caused by spin - orbit coupling and the inversion symmetry breaking induced by the surface, and can form non - collinear structures with specific chirality, thus encoding information. ### Research Methods The researchers used two main methods to study the magnetic properties of Fe chains: 1. **Classical Spin Model**: Determine the two - spin interaction parameters based on the energy derivatives of first - principles calculations. 2. **Direct Optimization**: Update the spin directions within the first - principles framework to find the magnetic ground state. ### Main Findings For a Fe chain with a length of 5 atoms, the system exhibits strong nearest - neighbor antiferromagnetic coupling, resulting in an almost collinear antiferromagnetic state. For a Fe chain with a length of 15 atoms, the system exhibits a spin - spiral state, and its rotation plane is slightly tilted with respect to the substrate surface. However, the spin - spiral chirality obtained using the classical spin model containing only two - spin interactions is opposite to that of the direct optimization result. ### Solution To understand the difference between these two methods, the researchers introduced four - spin chiral interactions. By introducing these high - order interactions, they were able to explain why the chirality obtained by the direct optimization method is different from that of the classical spin model. The four - spin chiral interaction plays a key role in describing complex magnetic orders. ### Conclusion This study shows that when describing the magnetic properties of Fe chains, it is not sufficient to consider only two - spin interactions, and higher - order multi - spin interactions (such as four - spin chiral interactions) must be introduced to accurately describe the magnetic ground state of the system. This finding provides a new perspective for understanding and designing nanostructures with specific magnetic properties. ### Formula Summary - **Energy Expression of the Spin Model**: \[ \Omega (\{\vec{e}\})=\Omega_0+\sum_{i = 1}^N\vec{e}_iK_i\vec{e}_i-\frac{1}{2}\sum_{i,j = 1}^N(i\neq j)\vec{e}_iJ_{ij}\vec{e}_j \] where \(\Omega_0\) is a constant, \(K_i\) is the single - ion anisotropy matrix, and \(J_{ij}\) is the tensor exchange interaction. - **Decomposition of the DM Interaction**: \[ J_{ij}=J_{ij}^II + J_{ij}^S+J_{ij}^A \] where \(J_{ij}^I\) is the isotropic exchange interaction, \(J_{ij}^S\) is the symmetric part, \(J_{ij}^A\) is the anti - symmetric part, and \[ \vec{e}_iJ_{ij}^A\vec{e}_j=\vec{D}_{ij}(\vec{e}_i\times\vec{e}_j) \] where \(\vec{D}_{ij}\) is the DM vector. Through these formulas and analysis, the researchers revealed the complex magnetic behavior of Fe chains on the Re(0001) surface and proposed the importance of introducing four - spin chiral interactions.
