What problem does this paper attempt to address?
### The Problem the Paper Attempts to Solve This paper aims to explore the perceived experiences of vegetarians adhering to a vegan diet. Specifically, the study describes the challenges, motivations, social influences, and health improvements experienced by vegans in self-care activities in Kermanshah, Iran, using a phenomenological approach. ### Background As non-communicable diseases (such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, cancer, and respiratory diseases) become major global health issues, unhealthy eating habits are considered one of the significant causes of these diseases. Vegetarianism, as an emerging dietary practice, is believed to help prevent these diseases. However, although the health benefits of vegetarianism have been confirmed by some quantitative studies, there is still limited research on how people adapt to a vegetarian diet in real life. Therefore, this study uses qualitative research methods to gain an in-depth understanding of the personal experiences of vegetarians. ### Methods This is a descriptive phenomenological study that adopts a naturalistic or constructivist philosophical approach. The study subjects are vegetarians involved in self-care activities in Kermanshah. Researchers conducted face-to-face semi-structured in-depth interviews with 12 vegetarians through purposive sampling. Data collection and analysis were conducted using Collaizi's seven-step method, and MAXQDA software was used for data management. ### Results Through qualitative analysis of the data, researchers extracted 567 codes and categorized them into 15 sub-themes and 4 main themes: 1. **Pursuit of Redemption** (meaningful framework, path of awakening, unparalleled disappointment, chronic complex diseases) 2. **Seeking a New World** (initial doubts and hesitations, temptation to return, continuous criticism, unfamiliar appearance) 3. **Process of Overcoming Difficulties** (related issues, adapting to new ways, perceived suggestions) 4. **Achieving Expected Results** (healthy lifestyle, therapeutic feedback, emotional health improvement, feeling of youth) ### Theme Analysis 1. **Pursuit of Redemption** - **Meaningful Framework**: Participants believe that vegetarianism aligns with the natural state of humans and represents a spiritual awakening. - **Path of Awakening**: Participants gradually recognize the benefits of vegetarianism through scientific research and others' experiences. - **Unparalleled Disappointment**: Many participants experienced disappointment and depression in life before turning to vegetarianism. - **Chronic Complex Diseases**: Most participants suffer from chronic diseases, and the ineffectiveness of traditional treatments prompted them to try vegetarianism. 2. **Seeking a New World** - **Initial Doubts and Hesitations**: Participants initially doubted vegetarianism but gradually accepted it after seeing the effects. - **Temptation to Return**: After starting vegetarianism, participants sometimes felt tempted to return to old eating habits due to external influences. - **Continuous Criticism**: Participants often faced criticism from family and society, feeling isolated. - **Unfamiliar Appearance**: In the early stages of vegetarianism, participants experienced noticeable physical changes, such as weight loss and hair loss, which were seen as signs of weakness by those around them. 3. **Process of Overcoming Difficulties** - **Related Issues**: Participants faced various physical and psychological issues in the early stages of vegetarianism, such as hunger, detox reactions, and social isolation. - **Adapting to New Ways**: Participants gradually adapted to vegetarianism by adjusting their dietary habits and lifestyle. 4. **Achieving Expected Results** - **Healthy Lifestyle**: Participants reported that vegetarianism made their lifestyle healthier. - **Therapeutic Feedback**: Vegetarianism had positive therapeutic effects on many participants' chronic diseases. - **Emotional Health Improvement**: Vegetarianism improved participants' emotional and psychological health. - **Feeling of Youth**: Participants felt younger and more energetic. ### Conclusion Despite the numerous challenges faced by vegetarians in adhering to a vegetarian diet, they ultimately experienced significant health and psychological improvements. These findings are important for understanding vegetarian culture and its impact on individual health.
