Abstract:Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part D: Journal of Automobile Engineering, Ahead of Print. Linear electromagnetic energy harvesters hold significant potential for application in the recovery of suspension vibration energy, particularly in the context of automobiles. However, several factors such as size, range of motion, and complexity need be thoughtfully considered. This study introduces a novel approach to address these challenges by proposing an external eight-pole nine-slot linear generator energy-regenerative suspension system that can fit within the available space of an automobile's suspension. This innovative suspension system integrates a traditional hydraulic shock absorber with a generator to enable the recovery of vibration energy. To enhance the generator's power density, we employ a unique permanent magnet structure using a Halbach-like array, achieved through axial magnetization and magnetic conductive blocks. To further our understanding of the system, we derive the electromagnetic damping coefficient of the linear generator and establish the dynamic equation for the two-degree-of-freedom energy-regenerative suspension vehicle. Through simulation, we find that this energy-regenerative suspension system improves vertical vibrations of the vehicle body by 14.66% when compared to passive suspension systems. To validate the energy-regenerative capabilities of the suspension, we have developed a prototype of a cylindrical linear generator energy-regenerative suspension and conducted tests on an electro-hydraulic servo shock absorber test bench. The experimental results show that the peak voltage of the system can reach 5.09 V under the excitation of sine wave with amplitude of 5 mm and frequency of 1.5 hz.
