Abstract:As a result of the growing environmental awareness and increasing needs of functional materials in food industry, electrospinning natural biopolymers has aroused great attention across the aspects of the research and industry. Electrospinning processes are very versatile, simple and scalable, providing an enrichment of products in different areas with improved functionalities. The prepared micro- and/or nanofibers have versatile properties with high porosity, large surface area, and tunable lengthscale, and they are low in cost and easy to be functionalized without the requirement of high-purity raw materials, which showed high potential for industrialization. Natural biopolymers such as proteins and polysaccharides are high quality starting materials used for electrospinning as they not only have abundant sources, but also are biocompatible and degradable that can meet the criteria of safety to use in food areas. However, there are still issues encountered when electrospinning natural biopolymers, such as the difficulty in spinning globular structure mostly appeared in plant proteins, and the poor water vapor barrier properties of some polysaccharide electrospinned fibers. The aim of this review is to offer a comprehensive view of basic knowledge of these commonly utilized natural biopolymers and their fiber fabrication methods, the functional characteristics of micro/nanofibers engineered. Moreover, the emerging applications in the food-related areas including food active packaging, encapsulation, enzyme immobilization, and food biosensing were underlined in order to foster the development of electrospinning fibers in food industry.

Abstract:With the strengthening of the public awareness of food safety and environmental protection, functional food packaging materials have received widespread attention. Nanofibers are considered as promising packaging materials due to their unique one-dimensional structure (high aspect ratio, large specific surface area) and functional advantages. Electrospinning, as a commonly used simple and efficient method for preparing nanofibers, can obtain nanofibers with different structures such as aligned, core-shell, and porous structures by modifying the devices and adjusting the process parameters. The selection of raw materials and structural design of nanofibers can endow food packaging with different functions, including antimicrobial activity, antioxidation, ultraviolet protection, and response to pH. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive review of the application of electrospun nanofibers in functional food packaging. Advances in electrospinning technology and electrospun materials used for food packaging are introduced. Moreover, the progress and development prospects of electrospun nanofibers in functional food packaging are highlighted. Meanwhile, the application of functional packaging based on nanofibers in different foods is discussed in detail.

Abstract:Electrospun nanofibers with structural and functional advantages have drawn much attention due to their potential applications for active food packaging. The traditional role of food packaging is just storage containers for food products. The changes of retailing practice and consumer demand promote the development of active packaging to improve the safety, quality, and shelf life of the packaged foods. To develop the technique of electrospinning for active food packaging, electrospun nanofibers have been covalently or non-covalently functionalized for loading diverse bioactive compounds including antimicrobial agents, antioxidant agents, oxygen scavengers, carbon dioxide emitters, and ethylene scavengers. The aim of this review is to present a concise but comprehensive summary on the progress of electrospinning techniques for active food packaging. Emphasis is placed on the tunability of the electrospinning technique, which achieves the modification of fiber composition, orientation, and architecture. Efforts are also made to provide functionalized strategies of electrospun polymeric nanofibers for food packaging application. Furthermore, the existing limitations and prospects for developing electrospinning in food packaging area are discussed.

Abstract:<span>Food safety is a bottleneck problem. In order to provide information about advanced and unique food packaging technique, this study summarized the advancements of electrospinning technique. Food packaging is a multidisciplinary area involving food science, food engineering, food chemistry, and food microbiology, and the interest in maintaining the freshness and quality of foods has grown considerably. For this purpose, electrospinning technology has gained much attention due to its unique functions and superior processing. Sudden advancements of electrospinning have been rapidly incorporated into research. This review summarized some latest information about food packaging and different materials used for the packaging of various foods such as fruits, vegetables, meat, and processed items. Also, the use of electrospinning and materials used for the formation of nanofibers are discussed in detail. However, in food industry, the application of electrospun nanofibers is still in its infancy. In this study, different parameters, structures of nanofibers, features and fundamental properties are described briefly, while polymers fabricated through electrospinning with advances in food packaging films are described in detail. Moreover, this comprehensive review focuses on the polymers used for the electrospinning of nanofibers as packaging films and their applications for variety of foods. This will be a valuable source of information for researchers studying various polymers for electrospinning for application in the food packaging industry.</span>

Abstract:<h2>Abstract</h2><p>Electrospinning and electrospraying are versatile techniques for the production of nano- to micro-scale fibers and particles. Over the past 2 decades, significant progresses have been made to advance the fundamental understandings of these electrohydrodynamic processes. Researchers have investigated different polymeric and non-polymeric substrates for producing submicron electrospun/electrosprayed materials of unique morphologies and physicochemical properties. This chapter provides an overview on the basic principles of electrospinning and electrospraying, highlighting the effects of key processing and solution parameters. Electrohydrodynamic phenomena of edible substrates, including polysaccharides (xanthan, alginate, starch, cyclodextrin, pullulan, dextran, modified celluloses, and chitosan), proteins (zein, what gluten, whey protein, soy protein, gelatin, etc.), and phospholipids are reviewed. Selected examples are presented on how ultrafine fibers and particles derived from these substrates are being exploited for food and nutraceutical applications. Finally, the challenges and opportunities of the electrostatic methods are discussed.</p>

Abstract:Packaging plays a critical role in determining the quality, safety, and shelf-life of many food products. There have been several innovations in the development of more effective food packaging materials recently. Polymer nanofibers are finding increasing attention as additives in packaging materials because of their ability to control their pore size, surface energy, barrier properties, antimicrobial activity, and mechanical strength. Electrospinning is a widely used processing method for fabricating nanofibers from food grade polymers. This review describes recent advances in the development of electrospun nanofibers for application in active and smart packaging materials. Moreover, it highlights the impact of these nanofibers on the physicochemical properties of packaging materials, as well as the application of nanofiber-loaded packaging materials to foods, such as dairy, meat, fruit, and vegetable products. Electrospinning is a flexible method for smart and active packaging fabrication. Nanofibers can improve mechanical, barrier, and optical properties of packaging. Electrospun fibers can control the release of functional agents to food products. Incorporation of additives in nanofibers makes respond to environmental changes. Abstract:Electrohydrodynamic processes namely electrospinning and electrospraying are facile, cost effective and flexible methods that utilize electrically charged jet of polymer solution for production of fibers or particles at micron, submicron and nanoscale. The electrospun fibers and electrosprayed particles possess many structural and functional advantages. However, their use in the field of food processing and preservation remains less explored. This review provides a succinct discussion on the potential food based applications of electrospinning and electrospraying techniques such as encapsulation, enzyme immobilization, food coating and development of materials for filtration and active food packaging. Abstract:The methods available for the disposal of synthetic polymers are not advanced in an environment-friendly way. Consequently, their waste persists as a non-degradable pollutant that discharges toxic substances, which have now reached the deepest parts of the ocean. As an alternative, biopolymers such as polylactic acid, polyhydroxyalkanoates, and poly(butylene succinate), synthesized from natural sources such as plants, animals, and microbes, are an eco-friendly option, as they are biodegradable and a better option to shift from synthetic polymer dependency. The fabrication of electrospun nanofibers (NFs) using biopolymers is a novel approach, by which new ideas have been proposed in various fields, such as agriculture, biomedical, food packing, textiles, adsorption, drug delivery, three-dimensional printing, etc. Electrospun NFs are receiving increasing attention due to their diverse properties, including flexibility. This review provides a perception of the novel biopolymers that are currently utilized by the electrospun technique and their various applications.

Abstract:Electrospinning has been recognized as an efficient technique for the fabrication of polymer nanofibers. Various polymers have been successfully electrospun into ultrafine fibers in recent years mostly in solvent solution and some in melt form. Potential applications based on such fibers specifically their use as reinforcement in nanocomposite development have been realized. In this paper, a comprehensive review is presented on the researches and developments related to electrospun polymer nanofibers including processing, structure and property characterization, applications, and modeling and simulations. Information of those polymers together with their processing conditions for electrospinning of ultrafine fibers has been summarized in the paper. Other issues regarding the technology limitations, research challenges, and future trends are also discussed.

Abstract:Electrospinning has attracted great interest from researchers as an effective and versatile method for producing nanofibers. This interest stems from the pronounced advantages of the technology in producing nanomaterials, which are characterized by diverse and sophisticated micro/nanostructures, together with their multiple functions. The wide-ranging applicability of electrospinning polymer nanofiber membranes is attributed to their high porosity, excellent flexibility, and adjustable wettability. This review provides an overview of the recent progress in electrospinning polymer nanofiber membranes, including the fundamental principles of electrospinning, techniques for structural manipulation, strategies for membrane modification, and their high-efficiency applications. Abstract:Polymeric nanofibers have emerged as exclusive one-dimensional nanomaterials. Various polymeric nanofibers and nanocomposite nanofibers have been processed using the thermoplastic, conducting, and thermoset matrices. This review aims to highlight the worth of electrospinning technology for the processing of polymer/nanocarbon nanocomposite nanofibers. In this regard, the design, morphology, physical properties, and applications of the nanofibers were explored. The electrospun polymer/nanocarbon nanofibers have a large surface area and fine fiber orientation, alignment, and morphology. The fiber processing technique and parameters were found to affect the nanofiber morphology, diameter, and essential physical features such as electrical conductivity, mechanical properties, thermal stability, etc. The polymer nanocomposites with nanocarbon nanofillers (carbon nanotube, graphene, fullerene, etc.) were processed into high-performance nanofibers. Successively, the electrospun nanocomposite nanofibers were found to be useful for photovoltaics, supercapacitors, radiation shielding, and biomedical applications (tissue engineering, antimicrobials, etc.).

Abstract:Electrospinning is a versatile and viable technique for generating ultrathin fibers. Remarkable progress has been made with regard to the development of electrospinning methods and engineering of electrospun nanofibers to suit or enable various applications. We aim to provide a comprehensive overview of electrospinning, including the principle, methods, materials, and applications. We begin with a brief introduction to the early history of electrospinning, followed by discussion of its principle and typical apparatus. We then discuss its renaissance over the past two decades as a powerful technology for the production of nanofibers with diversified compositions, structures, and properties. Afterward, we discuss the applications of electrospun nanofibers, including their use as "smart" mats, filtration membranes, catalytic supports, energy harvesting/conversion/storage components, and photonic and electronic devices, as well as biomedical scaffolds. We highlight the most relevant and recent advances related to the applications of electrospun nanofibers by focusing on the most representative examples. We also offer perspectives on the challenges, opportunities, and new directions for future development. At the end, we discuss approaches to the scale-up production of electrospun nanofibers and briefly discuss various types of commercial products based on electrospun nanofibers that have found widespread use in our everyday life.

Abstract:Nanofibers have been the subject of recent intensive research due to their unique properties, especially their large surface-area-to-volume ratio, which is about 1000 times higher than that of a human hair. They also have several other remarkable characteristics, such as flexibility in surface functionality, superior mechanical properties such as stiffness and tensile strength, their capacity to be formed into a variety of shapes, and the fact that they can be produced from a wide range of organic and inorganic polymers and ceramics. These outstanding properties make polymer nanofibers the optimal candidates for providing significant improvements in current technology and for opening the door to novel applications in many research areas. Abstract:Over recent years, nanofibers have been developed to be edible materials due to their superior properties. The large-demanded nanofibers for edible applications encourage researchers to develop further various methods for producing nanofibers. One of the methods is rotary forcespinning (RFS) that offers a huge potential to yield nanofibers with large-volume capacity and low-cost productivity compared with the other ones. This review provides recent advances on rotary forcespun nanofibers with emphasizing on basic principles of the RFS method and the essential factors affecting the produced nanofibers. The prospects of rotary forcespun nanofibers for edible applications, including food encapsulation, nutraceutical and drug delivery, edible coatings or films, and food packaging, are also elaborated. Possible challenges and future directions of the utilization of RFS method to produce nanofibers for edible applications are also discussed.

Abstract:Biopolymers are those class of macromolecules which are found in nature or extracted from the living organisms. Various structures and properties of the biopolymers-based materials are well researched till to date. These mainly includes hydrogels, bio glasses, bio inks, biocomposites, fibers and others. These biopolymers-based structures have some limitations. However, Biopolymers have some common advantages (i.e., non-toxicity, easy availability, monodispersity, degradability, and better solubility etc.) and disadvantages (i.e., poor thermal and chemical stabilities, brittleness etc.). To overcome these disadvantages, it is necessary to tailor these polymers by few emerging techniques like “Electrospinning”. Electrospinning is one of the easiest techniques to prepare nanofibers from polymeric solutions by applying high voltage. Obtained nano/micro structural polymeric fibers have good properties like high surface area, porosity and low weights etc. The materials having high surface area and porosity can easily interact with cells and tissues, are better mobile vehicles for drugs, as well as possess good filtration and adsorption abilities. Thus, these one-dimensional structures of the biopolymers are very useful in various fields of biomedical especially water sanitation/desalination, tissue engineering, drug delivery and scaffolds. Abstract:Technological advancements in nanofibers and production technologies have led to nanofibers being applied in various applications. Nanofibers are produced by a variety of techniques such as electrospinning, drawing, self-assembly, phase separation, and others. Electrospinning is widely used due to its versatility and scalability. Nanofiber production by other techniques is still limited to the laboratory scale, hence the dominance of electrospinning. The versatility of nanofibers has seen them being used in various applications such as health, protection, clothing, filtration, packaging, and electronics. Their large surface area, small diameters, and porous structures make them good materials in these diverse fields. Nanofibers are incorporated with nanoparticles to enhance stability. In biomedical applications, nanofibers are used in drug delivery systems, wound healing, and tissue engineering because of their biocompatibility and biodegradability. In fields like protection, clothing, and packaging, nanofibers are used due to their large surface area, porosity, and flexibility. These properties also make nanofibers highly effective in filtration, where their small size and large surface area allow them to efficiently remove a significant number of contaminants. Additionally, nanofibers are utilized in the production of flexible electronics, enhancing comfort in wearable devices. Biopolymers are being adopted to address the environmental and health concerns of traditional nanofiber materials. Biopolymers are biodegradable and biocompatible; however, their stability can be affected by production and environmental conditions. This work highlights the applications of nanofibers, especially the environmentally friendly nanofiber applications in health, packaging, water treatment, protection, electronics, clothing, and technical textiles.

Abstract:Background: In the past decades, many natural bioactive compounds with antioxidant, immunoregulatory, antimicrobial, and anticancer activities have been successfully identified in plant and animal materials. However, due to their poor solubility, unfavorable flavor, low bioavailability and instability during food processing and storage, the development of bioactive compounds used in the food industry presents many technological challenges. Scope and approach: Emulsion electrospinning is a novel and simple technique to fabricate core-shell nanofibers, and either water-in-oil (W/O) or oil-in-water (O/W) emulsions can be electrospun to directly encapsulate hydrophilic or hydrophobic compounds into core-shell fibers, respectively. This review introduces fundamentals and advantages of emulsion electrospinning as well as its food applications. The effects of different types of emulsifiers on the formation of emulsion systems and emulsion-based electrospun fibers are highlighted. Further, the existing limitations and scope for future research are discussed. Key findings and conclusions: Recent studies have found that the emulsion-based electrospun nanofibers can enhance the encapsulation efficiency, stability, and bioavailability of bioactive compounds, as well as achieve targeted delivery and controlled release, thus providing new strategies to improve their barrier performance compared to conventional electrospinning and therefore facilitating the development of emulsion-based electrospun mats in the food industry.

Abstract:Nanotechnology is a budding technology that has been identified as a vital scientific and commercial venture with global economic benefits. With the increasing knowledge of nanomaterial manufacturing techniques, research groups around the globe are focusing more on the preparation of nanomaterials for various applications. Among the various techniques reported in the literature, electrospinning has gathered significant interest because of its ability to fabricate nanostructures with unique properties such as a high surface area and inter/intra fibrous porosity. Electrospinning has been the most widely used technique in the late 20th (1990) and early 21st (2000) centuries (Reneker and Yarin, 2008). Since its first use in the early 20th (1900) (Cooley, 1900) century, significant improvements have been made in the instrument design, material used, and nanomaterials produced. The production of nanomaterials (nanofibers) via electrospinning is affected by many operating parameters. This review paper will provide an overview of the electrospinning (applied electric field, distance between the needle and collector and flow rate, needle diameter), solution (polymer concentration, viscosity, solvent and solution conductivity) and environmental (relativity humidity and temperature) parameters that affect the nanofibers fabrication and the application of nanofibers in tissue engineering, drug delivery systems, wound dressings, antibacterial study, filtration, desalination, protective clothing fabrication, and biosensors.

Abstract:The process of electrospinning is over a century old, yet novel material and method achievements, and later the addition of nanomaterials in polymeric solutions, have spurred a significant increase in research innovations with several unique applications. Significant improvements have been achieved in the development of electrospun nanofibrous matrices, which include tailoring compositions of polymers with active agents, surface functionalization with nanoparticles, and encapsulation of functional materials within the nanofibers. Recently, sequentially combining fabrication of nanofibers with 3D printing was reported by our group and the synergistic process offers fiber membrane functionalities having the mechanical strength offered by 3D printed scaffolds. Recent developments in electrospun nanofibers are enumerated here with special emphasis on biomedical technologies, chemical and biological sensing, and energy harvesting aspects in the context of e-textile and tactile sensing. Energy harvesting offers significant advantages in many applications, such as biomedical technologies and critical infrastructure protection by using the concept of finite state machines and edge computing. Many other uses of devices using electrospun nanofibers, either as standalone or conjoined with 3D printed materials, are envisaged. The focus of this review is to highlight selected novel applications in biomedical technologies, chem.-bio sensing, and broadly in energy harvesting for use in internet of things (IoT) devices. The article concludes with a brief projection of the future direction of electrospun nanofibers, limitations, and how synergetic combination of the two processes will open pathways for future discoveries.
