Abstract:Magnetic invisible cloaking has been previously demonstrated but only limited to objects with rotational geometries either in spherical or cylindrical shapes, for which the classic analytical bilayer scheme could be strictly applied to design the hiding coat. In this work, we show that a quasi-static cloaking effect could be achieved for irregular objects, e.g., metals with sharp edges, using a numerical optimization scheme. In the quasi-static limit, it is unambiguously proved that the disturbance of the irregular geometries could be well compensated by the inhomogeneous distribution of the soft ferromagnetic (FM) layer either in permeability values or in shapes under the framework of a bilayer cloak. An FM mesh coat with a constant thickness of 0.5 mm was successfully engineered to meet the specific requirements. Experimentally, good cloaking performance with a field disturbance of less than 0.5% has been achieved for a 2 × 2 × 5 cm3 brass bar in a wide frequency range from ∼10 to 250 kHz. A commercial metal scanner was also applied to verify the practical potential. The general strategy to hide almost arbitrary objects was discussed in the end. In principle, the numerical conformal coat engineered by the composite material proposed here could be broadly extended for objects with various geometries.

Abstract:In this paper the authors report that perfect invisibility cloaking could be achieved in a medium designed by a non-Euclidean conformal transformation. Wave behaviors could be controlled as well as the cloaking device configured by the general Euclidean approach dealing with the full Maxwell's equations. The cloaking medium proposed here is totally isotropic and can work in waves without the geometry and polarization limits; thus it is very promising for applications to build a device to hide large objects.

Abstract:The method to elaborately design the refractive index profile in the lower Riemann sheet of Zhukovski transformation plays an important role in the performance of this kind of conformal cloaks. However, for most proposed schemes, the mathematical calculations are complex. Here, we propose a more convenient method to design conformal cloaks by manipulating structures directly in the physical space. The designed cloak only needs symmetrical metal boundaries filled with normal dielectrics (refractive index ranges from 1 to 2) in the ‘circular branch cut’, which would be more feasible for future experimental implementation. Numerical simulations are performed by using the finite element method to validate our theoretical analysis.

Abstract:Invisibility cloaking based on optical transformation involves materials singularity at the branch cut points. Many interesting optical devices, such as the Eaton lens, also require planar media index singularities in their implementation. We show a method to transmute two singularities simultaneously into harmless topological defects formed by anisotropic permittivity and permeability tensors. Numerical simulation is performed to verify the functionality of the transmuted conformal cloak consisting of two kissing Maxwell fish eyes.

Abstract:Invisibility cloak has attracted the attention of electromagnetic researchers due to its magical properties and marvelous potential applications in the field of applied physics and engineering. Recently, a multiphysics cloaking has put the new spirit into this field. In this paper, we introduce a device, composed of three shells and each shell works as an invisibility cloak for a specific physical phenomenon. Following this technique, a number of cloaks with different implementation approaches can be proposed for distinct physical phenomena in a single structure. Here, we restrict ourselves for the case of two physical behaviors: thermal and electrical conductivities. This type of multi-cloaking structure can be best used in mechanically designed structures to better control heating and electrical effects.

Abstract:In this paper, the efficient transformation optics method has been utilized to design and analyze two-dimensional (2D) transparent cloaks, structures that can physically protect the devices inside but do not affect their electrical performances at all. The general and explicit expressions for the material parameters of the transformed space are derived. 2D transparent cloaks with arbitrarily conformal and nonconformal inner and outer boundaries and those working in gradually changing background and layered media are designed. Full-wave simulations combined with the Huygens’ principle are applied to validate the transparency of the cloaks. The simulation results under different circumstances demonstrate that the proposed method is correct and efficient. The work introduced here makes important progress in the theoretical design of the transparent cloak and expands the application of the transformation optics method.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) elliptically cylindrical invisible cloaks with multiple regions are designed based on the transformation optics and the complementary media theory. Multiple invisible cloak regions can be obtained by properly using the compressed or folded transformation in each space layer. The constitutive parameter tensor expressions for each region have been obtained. The results of full wave simulations by using finite element software confirm the validity of the constitutive parameter tensor expressions. In addition, the parameters are relatively easier to realize.

Abstract:In transformation optics, the space transformation is viewed as the deformation of a material. The permittivity and permeability tensors in the transformed space are found to correlate with the deformation field of the material. By solving the Laplace's equation, which describes how the material will deform during a transformation, we can design electromagnetic cloaks with arbitrary shapes if the boundary conditions of the cloak are considered. As examples, the material parameters of the spherical and elliptical cylindrical cloaks are derived based on the analytical solutions of the Laplace's equation. For cloaks with irregular shapes, the material parameters of the transformation medium are determined numerically by solving the Laplace's equation. Full-wave simulations based on the Maxwell's equations validate the designed cloaks. The proposed method can be easily extended to design other transformation materials for electromagnetic and acoustic wave phenomena.

The Scattering of a Cylindrical Invisibility Cloak: Reduced Parameters and Optimization

Abstract:We investigate the scattering of 2D cylindrical invisibility cloaks with simplified constitutive parameters with the assistance of scattering coefficients. We show that the scattering of the cloaks originates not only from the boundary conditions but also from the spatial variation of the component of permittivity/permeability. According to our formulation, we propose some restrictions to the invisibility cloak in order to minimize its scattering after the simplification has taken place. With our theoretical analysis, it is possible to design a simplified cloak using some peculiar composites such as photonic crystals which mimic an effective refractive index landscape rather than offering effective constitutives, meanwhile cancelling the scattering from the inner and outer boundaries.

Abstract:An optical invisibility cloak based on a transformation approach has recently been proposed by a reduced set of material properties due to their easier implementation in reality and little need for an inhomogeneous permeability distribution, but the drawback of undesired scattering caused by the impedance mismatching at the outer boundary is unavoidable in such a cloak. By properly designing the coordinate transformation function to ensure impedance matching at the outer surface, we show that the performance of a nonmagnetic cylindrical cloak could be improved with minimized scattering fields. Using either a single high order power function or an optimized piecewise continuous power function, a cylindrical non-magnetic cloak has been designed with nearly perfect cloaking performance, which is better than those generated with a linear or a quadratic function. Due to the monotonicity of the designed power functions, the resulting cloak has no restriction on the size of the cloaking shell, therefore is suitable for both thick and thin cloaking structures.

Abstract:We propose a segmentation design approach for a cloak of arbitrary shape. We suggest that polygonal 2D cloaks with any number of sides, which do not require geometrical symmetry, can be achieved by dividing the polygon into many triangular regions and applying a spatial transformation on each triangle. This idea is verified by full-wave finite-element-based simulations, showing electromagnetic waves smoothly guided around cloaked perfect-conducting cylinders with different shapes of cross sections. This segmentation-transformation method can be well extended to cloaking of arbitrary shapes, including 3D cases. As an example, we simulate a cylindrical cloak whose cross section is very close to the contour of a woman, which demonstrates the validity of our method and further confirms the power of transformation optics. Abstract:Invisible cloak derived from the coordinate transformation requires its constitutive material to be anisotropic. In this work, we present a cloak of graded-index isotropic material based on the geometrical optics theory. The cloak is realized by concentric multilayered structure with designed refractive index to achieve the low-scattering and smooth power-flow. Full-wave simulations on such a design of a cylindrical cloak are performed to demonstrate the cloaking ability to incident wave of any polarization. Using normal nature material with isotropy and low absorption, the cloak shows light on a practical path to stealth technology, especially that in the optical range. Abstract:The electromagnetic characteristics of plane-transformed invisibility cloaks are quantitatively studied in this paper. We take elliptical cylindrical cloak as the example, and use an elliptical cylindrical wave expansion method to obtain the scattered field. It is demonstrated that an ideal elliptical cylindrical cloak is inherently visible. Noticeable field scattering and penetration will be induced when the cloak is exposed directly to an electromagnetic wave. However, as long as the cloak consists of a perfect electric conducting lining at the interior surface, perfect invisibility can still be achieved along the direction parallel to the major axis of the cloak for transverse magnetic illumination. Another plane-transformed cloak with a conical geometry is also proposed. The advantage of this cloak is that all the permittivity and permeability elements are spatially invariant while none of them is singular. Hence, it is easily realizable with artificially structured metamaterials. Finally, the applications of this kind of cloak are discussed.

Abstract:The phase delay problem of invisibility cloaks designed by optical conformal mapping is referred to the optical path difference between the waves in upper and lower Riemann sheets. As the frequency changes, the phase delay varies accordingly (here, we call it geometrical dispersion), which restricts the cloaks to working only at some discrete frequencies. Here, we solve the phase-delay problem by placing an optically null medium in the lower Riemann sheet. The conformal cloaks designed by using our method have many advantages, such as a continuous working band (no geometrical dispersion), omnidirectionality, robustness under frequency shifts, and no need for any complex materials that are both anisotropic and inhomogeneous. We also design metallic microchannels to realize our cloaks.

Abstract:The idea of using the coordinate transformation approach to design a cloak of invisibility has received much attention. Up to now, most of the discussions on cloaking are based on the linear transformation. If different transformations are adopted, cloaks with different performances can be achieved. This paper gives an analytical field solutions on a spherical cloak created with a general class of transformation functions. The analytical expressions of the electromagnetic field in the whole space are calculated, and the field distributions of cloaks with different parameters are analyzed. This analytical full wave method is a very computational efficient validation method compared with numerical simulations. It also provides a better physical insight into the effect of the transformation function on the performance of devices.

Abstract:Concealing an object by only covering an open space can be realized with a conical cloak. It is shown that we can not only use a conical cloak to guide the electromagnetic (EM) wave totally around an open region without introducing any scattered field, but also design one which produces the reflection exactly the same as that caused by a dielectric half space, in addition, it is demonstrated that introducing a little loss can significantly reduce the electric field distributed at the infinite side of the conical cloak, which indicate the possibility of truncating the conical cloak in axial direction and opens a path to its physical realization. Our approach provides a practical way to achieve invisibility, especially in the case where there are two half spaces composed of different media.

Abstract:A novel elliptical complementary invisible cloak is designed based on the transformation optics and the complementary media theory. The constitutive parameter tensor expressions have been obtained. The results of full-wave simulations by using finite-element software confirm the validity of the constitutive parameter tensor expressions. This invisible cloak can not only hide the objects inside the cloak, but also permit the electromagnetic wave penetrate into the cloak and communicate with the outside world.
Practical Realization of Transformation-Optics Designed Invisibility Cloak Through Layered Structures

Abstract:The idea of cloaking objects from the observation by electromagnetic (EM) fields based on the recently proposed transformation optics requires anisotropic space-dependent inhomogeneous medium to construct the cloak. To reduce the design complexity and realization difficulty, in this paper we present an approach of constructing the invisibility cloak through layered structures of isotropic homogeneous media. We will show the practical design procedure based on the effective medium theory. Two examples, one for a cylindrical cloak and the other for a ground plane cloak, will be demonstrated and the cloaking performances will be verified through full-wave EM numerical calculations. The proposed cloaks are composed of normal dielectric multilayers, thus can lead to easy experimental demonstration of non-magnetic cloak in the frequency range from microwave to optical.

Abstract:By investigating wave properties at cloak boundaries, invisibility cloaks with arbitrary shape constructed by general coordinate transformations are confirmed to be perfectly invisible to the external incident wave. The differences between line transformed cloaks and point transformed cloaks are discussed. The fields in the cloak medium are found analytically to be related to the fields in the original space via coordinate transformation functions. At the exterior boundary of the cloak, it is shown that no reflection is excited even though the permittivity and permeability do not always have a perfectly matched layer form, whereas at the inner boundary, no reflection is excited either, and in particular no field can penetrate into the cloaked region. However, for the inner boundary of any line transformed cloak, the permittivity and permeability in a specific tangential direction are always required to be infinitely large. Furthermore, the field discontinuity at the inner boundary always exists; the surface current is induced to make this discontinuity self-consistent. A point transformed cloak does not experience such problems. The tangential fields at the inner boundary are all zero, implying that no field discontinuity exists.
Non-Euclidean conformal devices with continuously varying refractive index profiles based on bi-spheres

Abstract:Either conformal transformation optics or geodesic mapping provides a design method to bend light rays in two-dimensional space with a nonuniform refractive index profile. In this paper, we combine both methods above to design a conformal invisible cloak based on bi-spheres with a refractive index profile varying from 0 to 10.7, smaller than 24.6 for the previous case of a single sphere. Moreover, we obtain an omnidirectional retro-reflector and a specular reflector by making position adjustments to mirrors, and achieve similar invisible effect by tuning sizes of the bi-spheres. Our work expands the toolkits for designing conformal devices with continuously-varying index profile.
