Abstract:Coupling two-dimensional earth-abundant element based electroactive species with three-dimensional carbon substrates is a promising but highly challenging strategy to prepare highly active, robust and eco-friendly electrocatalysts for sustainably generating hydrogen and oxygen from water splitting. Here we report a facile one-step collaborative growth method to directly construct NiS-MoS2 hetero-nanosheet arrays on carbon cloth (NiS-MoS2 HNSAs/CC) by introducing sodium dodecyl sulfate as a surfactant together with Ni, Mo and S sources. Benefiting from the well-exposed electroactive sites, fast transport of catalysis-relevant species and strong synergistic catalytic effect between NiS and MoS2, the as-prepared NiS-MoS2 HNSAs/CC exhibits excellent electrocatalytic performance for water splitting in 1 mol L-1 KOH, presenting an overpotential of 106 mV for the hydrogen evolution reaction and 203 mV for the oxygen evolution reaction at 10 mA cm(-2), and superior kinetics for them with a Tafel slope of 56.7 and 77.4 mV dec(-1), respectively. Moreover, a current density of 10 mA cm(-2) at a low cell voltage of 1.54 V for overall water splitting could be achieved along with an excellent stability for at least 24 h. This simple strategy might also be applied to assemble other kinds of active species on different inert substrates, providing new insight into the design and development of high-performance electrocatalysts and other electrochemical devices.

Abstract:Electrochemical water splitting, a crucial reaction for renewable energy storage, demands highly efficient and stable catalysts. Defect and interface engineering has been widely acknowledged to play a pivotal role in improving electrocatalytic performance. Herein, we demonstrate a facile strategy to construct sulfur vacancy (Sv)-engineered Co3S4/MoS2-interfaced nanosheet arrays to modulate the interface electronic structure in situ reduction with NaBH4. The abundant sulfur vacancies and well-arranged nanosheet arrays in Sv-Co3S4/MoS2 lead to pronounced electrocatalytic properties for hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions (HER/OER) in an alkaline medium, with observed overpotentials of 156 and 209 mV at 10 mA cm-2, respectively. Additionally, as a bifunctional electrocatalyst, Sv-Co3S4/MoS2 requires a cell voltage of 1.67 V at 10 mA cm-2 for overall water splitting and exhibits long-term stability with activity sustained for more than 20 h. This study provides a novel approach to producing transition metal compound-interfaced electrocatalysts with rich vacancies under mild conditions, showcasing their potential for efficient water splitting applications.

Abstract:The realization of water electrolysis on the basis of highly active, cost-effective electrocatalysts is significant yet challenging for achieving sustainable hydrogen production from water. Herein, N-doped Ni3 S2 /N-doped MoS2 1D hetero-nanowires supported by Ni foam (N-Ni3 S2 /N-MoS2 /NF) are readily synthesized through a chemical transformation strategy by using NiMoO4 nanowire array growth on Ni foam (NiMoO4 /NF) as the starting material. With the in situ generation of Ni3 S2 /MoS2 heterointerfaces within nanowires and the incorporation of N- anions, an extraordinary hydrophilic nature with abundant, well-exposed active sites and optimal reaction dynamics for both oxidation and reduction of water are obtained. Attributed to these properties, as-converted N-Ni3 S2 /N-MoS2 /NF exhibits highly efficient electrocatalytic activities for both hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions under alkaline conditions. The superior bifunctional properties of N-Ni3 S2 /N-MoS2 /NF enable it to effectively catalyze the overall water-splitting reaction.

Abstract:Fabrication of stable, efficient, and inexpensive bifunctional electro-catalysts for water splitting has become increasingly attractive. Herein, for the first time, the direct growth of Mo-doped Ni3S2 on Ni foams using sodium molybdate as the Mo source at different temperatures is demonstrated. Effects of temperature on the morphology and water splitting performance of Mo-doped Ni3S2 were discussed in detail. It is found that the atomic stoichiometric ratios of Mo and Ni can be controlled by the adjusting of reaction temperature, while the obtained electro-catalysts demonstrate various morphologies, capacitances and chemisorption free energies of hydrogen, which lead to different current densities and hydrogen evolution efficiencies. The electro-catalyst synthesized at 200 degrees C (200-SMN/NF) demonstrates the best regular morphology and electrochemical properties. When employed in oxygen evolution reactions, 200-SMN/NF demonstrates a low over-potential of 180 mV at 100 mA cm(-2). Adapting it as a bifunctional electro-catalyst, a current density of 10 mA cm(-2) at a very low cell voltage of 1.53 V and cycling lifespan of more than 15 h was delivered. Further results indicated elevated hydrogen evolution reaction activity, consisting of a moderate 278 mV over-potential at a 100 mA cm(-2) hydrogen production current density, a small 72.9 mV dec(-1) Tafel slope, and a superior current density compared to that of precious catalyst Pt/C (40%) after-0.53 V. These results underscore the fact that 200-SMN/NF is a high-performance, precious-metal-free electro-catalyst, and provide the foundation for exciting opportunities in water splitting applications.

Abstract:High performance and low-cost electrocatalysts for overall water splitting, i.e., catalyzing hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions with the same material, are of great importance for large-scale, renewable energy conversion processes. Here, we report an ultrafast (~ 7 ms) synthesis technique for transition metal chalcogenide nanoparticles assisted by high temperature treatment. As a proof of concept, we demonstrate that cobalt sulfide (~ 20 nm in diameter)@ few-layer graphene (~ 2 nm in thickness) core-shell nanoparticles embedded in RGO nanosheets exhibit remarkable bifunctional electrocatalytic activity and stability for overall water splitting, which is comparable to commercial 40 wt.% platinum/carbon (Pt/C) electrocatalysts. After 60 h of continuous operation, 10 mA·cm−2 water splitting current density can still be achieved at a low potential of ~ 1.77 V without any activity decay, which is among the most active for non-noble material based electrocatalysts. The presented study provides prospects in synthesizing highly efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts for large-scale energy conversion application via a simple yet efficient technique.

Abstract:In the ongoing quest for cost-effective and durable electrocatalysts for hydrogen production-a critical element of sustainable energy transformation-the 1T phase of Molybdenum Disulfide (MoS2) faces challenges due to its thermodynamic instability and the trade-off between efficiency and durability. Conversely, the 2H phase of MoS2, often disregarded in favor of the metallic 1T phase, suffers from its inert nature and limited active sites. To overcome these limitations, this study employs a straightforward hydrothermal synthesis strategy that couples both 1T and 2H phases of MoS2 with Ni3S2, forming 1T- and 2H- MoS2/Ni3S2 heterojunctions. Enhanced by Ni3S2's abundant active sites, improved electron transport capabilities, synergistic interface effects, and better structural stability, these heterojunctions achieve a high current density exceeding 500 mA cm-2 at low overpotentials, along with prolonged durability for both the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline electrolytes. Remarkably, an electrolyzer assembly utilizing 1T-MoS2/Ni3S2 as the cathode and 2H-MoS2/Ni3S2 as the anode demonstrates a competitive voltage of 1.58 V at 20 mA cm-2, showcasing superior performance in overall water splitting compared to other non-noble metal-based electrocatalysts. This study not only offers a viable method for synthesizing efficient and stable electrocatalysts for water splitting using transition metal-based heterogeneous structures but also addresses the fundamental challenges associated with 1T and 2H phases of MoS2.

Abstract:Metallic phase molybdenum disulfide (1T-MoS2), with its fast carrier mobility and highly abundant active sites, plays a vital role in the field of catalysis. However, the development of a simple and efficient strategy for the preparation of stabilized 1T-MoS2 remains a great challenge. Herein, we report the spontaneous phase transformation of MoS2 from the 2H to the 1T phase, caused by the strong metal-support interaction during iridium (Ir) adsorption. The resulting Ir/MoS2 heterostructures show higher catalytic activity for overall water splitting than those of commercial Pt/C and IrO2 in alkaline media. We believe that the spontaneous phase transformation of this material not only opens up a new perspective for developing advanced catalysts for alkaline water splitting but also presents an efficient and intriguing method for the phase engineering of two-dimensional materials.

Abstract:Finding efficient, stable, and inexpensive electrocatalysts is the key for water-splitting for developing hydrogen energy technology. The abundant MoS2 has hydrogen evolution activity comparable to that of Pt and is regarded as an efficient alternative for noble-metal-based electrocatalysts; however, it cannot be widely used due to the limitation of less exposed active sites. Herein, we propose a metal–organic framework (MOF)-etching and vulcanization strategy to design CoS2@NiS-MoS2 ternary composite heterostructures on Ti foil. The MOF-derived open framework structure is conducive to electrolyte entry and bubble diffusion, and a large number of nanosheet edges are exposed to greatly increase the number of active sites. Moreover, the heterojunction heterogeneous interface formed by CoS2, NiS, and MoS2 adjusts the local charge distribution and reduces the kinetic barrier during water splitting. In 1 mol/L KOH, the electrocatalyst required only 91 mV overpotential to deliver a current density of 10 mA cm–2 and had a Tafel slope of 53 mV dec–1 and good electrochemical stability. This work highlights the importance of control strategies for surface engineering at multiple scales, which can be used for the exploration of efficient and robust electrocatalysts for large-scale alkaline electrolyzers.

Abstract:Highly active and robust eletcrocatalysts based on earth-abundant elements are desirable to generate hydrogen and oxygen as fuels from water sustainably to replace noble metal materials. Here we report an approach to synthesize porous hybrid nanostructures combining amorphous nickel-cobalt complexes with 1T phase molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) via hydrazine-induced phase transformation for water splitting. The hybrid nanostructures exhibit overpotentials of 70 mV for hydrogen evolution and 235 mV for oxygen evolution at 10 mA cm −2 with long-term stability, which have superior kinetics for hydrogen- and oxygen-evolution with Tafel slope values of 38.1 and 45.7 mV dec −1 . Moreover, we achieve 10 mA cm −2 at a low voltage of 1.44 V for 48 h in basic media for overall water splitting. We propose that such performance is likely due to the complete transformation of MoS 2 to metallic 1T phase, high porosity and stabilization effect of nickel-cobalt complexes on 1T phase MoS 2 .

Abstract:Developing efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysts is extremely important for large-scale hydrogen production from water splitting. In this work, ultra-small MoS2 nanosheets with 5% Ni doping grown on both sides of hollow carbon microtubes (5%-Ni-MoS2/aCMT) are prepared by a hydrothermal method. The vertically oriented Ni-doped MoS2 nanosheets provide more active sites for HER, while open porous structure promotes ions transport, and hollow carbon microtube substrate accelerates electrons transport as well as hydrogen release. Density functional theory (DFT) analysis proves that the optimal amount of Ni doping can effectively adjust the electronic structure of MoS2. As a result, 5%-Ni-MoS2/aCMT electrode exhibits enhanced kinetics for HER in both acidic and alkaline conditions. To deliver the current density of 10 mA cm−2, it requires overpotentials of 140 and 88 mV in 1 M KOH and 0.5 M H2SO4. 5%-Ni-MoS2/aCMT exhibits better stability than commercial Pt/C at a high current density of 200 mA cm−2. Moreover, 5%-Ni-MoS2/aCMT/NF (nickel foam) || RuO2/NF electrolyzer exhibits ultra-long stability of 30 h at the current density of 100 mA cm−2 and excellent overall water splitting performance with requiring low cell voltages of 1.52 and 1.71 V to generate current densities of 10 and 50 mA cm−2.

Abstract:Electrochemical water splitting for hydrogen generation is a vital part for the prospect of future energy systems, however, the practical utilization relies on the development of highly active and earth-abundant catalysts to boost the energy conversion efficiency as well as reduce the cost. Molybdenum diselenide (MoSe2 ) is a promising nonprecious metal-based electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in acidic media, but it exhibits inferior alkaline HER kinetics in great part due to the sluggish water adsorption/dissociation process. Herein, the alkaline HER kinetics of MoSe2 is substantially accelerated by heteroatom doping with transition metal ions. Specifically, the Ni-doped MoSe2 nanosheets exhibit the most impressive catalytic activity in terms of lower overpotential and larger exchange current density. The density functional theory (DFT) calculation results reveal that Ni/Co doping plays a key role in facilitating water adsorption as well as optimizing hydrogen adsorption. The present work paves a new way to the development of low-cost and efficient electrocatalysts towards alkaline HER.

Abstract:Catalytic water splitting into H2 is a prospective way to alleviate the fossil fuels crisis. To date, α-MoO3 nanostructures show the low activity in water electrolysis reaction because of their poor conductive ability. The rational design of α-MoO3 with tunable electron structure is greatly desired to promote electrocatalytic performance. Herein, we utilize a facile one-pot method to prepare MoO3/N, P co-doped carbon sheets (MoO3/NPC). Carbon sheets are regulated by N and P doping, which are generated by thermal pyrolysis of melamine phosphate. Accordingly, the partial reduction of MoO3 nanosheets is elaborated by coordinative unsaturated Mo5+ sites. Experimental investigations show that MoO3 nanosheets are anchored on N and P co-doped carbon sheets. The electrochemical studies indicate that MoO3/NPC presents excellent water oxidation reactivity with 231 mV@10 mA/cm2, which is superior to RuO2 (283 mV). In comparison to α-MoO3 nanosheets (204 mV), the enhanced water reduction reactivity is achieved on MoO3/NPC with 144 mV at 10 mA/cm2. Serving as the bi-functional catalysts to drive water splitting, MoO3/NPC exhibits a low voltage of 1.59 V at 10 mA/cm2. Our work highlights that heteroatom engineering could mediate the electron state of MoO3 and thereby accelerate water splitting rate.

Abstract:Due to the advantages of large specific surface area, high mass transfer efficiency and easy access to active sites, two dimensional (2D) nanomaterials provide a great opportunity for the construction of new versatile electrocatalysts with superior properties. Herein, a graphene-templated growth of MoS2-Ni3S2 heterostructure with porous structure is successfully prepared on the Ni foam (MoS2/Ni3S2@G/NF) by one pot hydrothermal method. The electronic structure and surface properties of 2D chalcogenides are modified by heterogeneous interface and component engineering, so as to prepare a high-performance transition metal composite catalytic electrode for electrochemical reaction. The optimized MoS2/Ni3S2 @G/NF shows excellent bifunctional activity and durability in alkaline medium. It only needs 53 mV and 265 mV overpotential to reach 10 mA cm−2 current density of HER and 20 mA cm−2 current density for OER, respectively. When the composite is used as an advanced electrocatalyst for water splitting, the 1.47 V voltage required to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm−2, which is better than the most non-noble metal electrocatalysts. The heterostructures between MoS2, Ni3S2 and graphene are conducive to the synchronous chemical adsorption of hydrogen and oxygen-containing intermediates, which can improve the catalytic activity of overall water splitting.

Abstract:Designing heterostructure in electrocatalysts can enhance the reaction kinetics of overall water splitting by exposing more active sites and promoting the electron transfer. Mo-based and Ni-based sulfides, which have respectively shown excellent catalytic activity in hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER), can remedy the shortcomings of single half-reaction by synergistic effect. Herein, we realized the in-situ growth of Co-doped NiS2/MoS2 nanosheet on CFP (Co-NiS2/MoS2) using a two-step hydrothermal method. The Co-NiS2/MoS2 nanosheets exhibit superior activity for durable HER and OER, obviously superior to those of the single-structure catalysts. Moreover, the cell voltage is only 1.63 V at 10 mA cm−2 for overall water splitting. The density functional theory simulation results show the hydrogen adsorption energy in Co-NiS2/MoS2 system is closer to zero than others, further suggesting heterostructure can reduce energy barrier of water splitting.

Self-supported tremella-like MoS2-AB particles on nickel foam as bifunctional electrocatalysts for overall water splitting

Abstract:The technology of electrolytic water splitting to produce hydrogen is considered a promising method for renewable energy utilization. It is essential to develop bifunctional electrode materials with low cost and high activity. Herein, tremella-like MoS2-AB particles on nickel foam substrate were fabricated through a one-step Solvothermal reaction and exhibited excellent electrocatalytic performance for over-water electrolysis in alkaline media, i.e., overpotentials of 77 and 248 mV to achieve catalytic current density 10 mA cm−2 for hydrogen evolution reaction and oxygen evolution reaction, respectively. Moreover, the two-electrode device demanded 1.51 V cell voltage to reach 10 mA cm−2 and showed good stability of 12 h without iR compensation. This work may afford a new idea to design self-supported bifunctional electrocatalysts toward efficient overall water splitting reactions.

Constructing 1T-MoS2/Ni3S4 heterostructure to balance water dissociation and hydroxyl desorption for efficient hydrogen evolution

Abstract:Alkaline water electrolysis is a viable technique for large-scale hydrogen production. The metallic polymorph of molybdenum disulfide (1T-MoS2) has been proven to be an efficient electro-catalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in acidic electrolytes. However, its catalytic activity in alkaline conditions is substantially lower than in acidic ones. This is due to the sluggish water adsorption and dissociation dynamics. In this study, a 1T-MoS2/Ni3S4 heterostructure was constructed by vertically growing 1T-MoS2 nanosheets on Ni3S4 nanosheets. Experiment and theory calculations demonstrated that electrons transfer from Ni3S4 to 1T-MoS2 at the heterointerfaces. This electron re-arrangement balances the energy between water dissociation and hydroxyl desorption on the Ni sites and optimizes the free energy of hydrogen adsorption (ΔGH*) on the Mo-edge sites. This synergistic effect accelerates both water splitting on the Ni site and hydrogen adsorption/desorption on the Mo-edge site at the heterointerface, Consequently, the 1T-MoS2/Ni3S4 heterostructure shows significantly boosted alkaline HER activity, with a small overpotential of 44 mV at 10 mA⋅cm-2 and a Tafel slope of 43 mV⋅dec-1 in 1M KOH. In particular, at high current densities (j > 100 mA cm-2), it outperforms state-of-the-art Pt/C.

Abstract:Interfacial atoms in the heterostructured catalyst are of great importance due to their modulated electronic structure that can trigger enhanced activity in various catalytic processes. Herein, a unique Ni-Mo based metal/oxide heterostructure with abundant mesopores was reported, which enables the interfacial Ni atoms exposed extensively. Atomic-scale structure characterization combined with density functional theory calculation revealed that the interfacial Ni exhibit an enriched charge state, endowing optimized adsorption strength to the intermediates in alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). As a result, this catalyst recorded an ultralow overpotential of 16 mV@10 mA/cm2, addressing one of the best activities for alkaline HER. Interestingly, this synthetic strategy was extended to synthesize Fe-doped metal/oxide heterostructure that exhibited remarkable oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance as well. As a proof-of-concept, the prepared catalysts were assembled in an electrolyzer, which delivered exceptional overall water splitting performance and even exceeds the Pt‖RuO2 cell, demonstrating a promising platform for further catalyst design.
