Abstract:Introduction The new type of postmodern art can be interpreted from the point of view of self expression polarized between: art - art-therapy, ludic, occupational therapy - religion. The computer becomes the new medium after the impact of television, and by integrating computers into the network, their communication function has become more prevalent than that of data processing. Contemporary visual arts bring together, in different degrees of relationship and fusion, fields of art that until now were understood and practiced more individually. Multimedia and mixed media technology, which has evolved into meaningful visual representations, incorporates the science behind human perception and knowledge. Objectives The purpose of art in art-therapy, in this context, is not an exercise of the already acquired knowledge upon the artistic material, but a discovery of the yet unknown. Art-based therapies, as nondirective methods, attempt to visualize past traumatic experiences and harmonize the individual with himself and with others. Methods In the preventive activities, we include all activities involving nonverbal communication and holistic engagement of people in creative activities, specific to visual arts (plastic, decorative design, and multimedia)."Beneficiaries can create their own images with which they want to interact, to arrange their environment...We experiment with art-specific ways to make interdisciplinary exchanges and cultural interferences using the universal language of visual arts along with intercultural elements and religious ecumenism" . The child expresses various issues related to his feelings, like the search of his identity, the generated anxieties, the family and professional environment, the situations of neglect and abuse. For the same purpose, as a complement to activities in nature camps, where education/art therapy takes place in the artist's studio, special care must be taken to create an evocative and stimulating work environment. Results We detect hidden capacities through the specific means of the visual arts with the aim of providing the freedom to follow one's own destiny, encouraging the joy of creatively manifesting at multiple levels of difficulty in any activity. Harmonizing cultural differences develop self-esteem, tolerance, resilience, and necessary adaptation to the conditions of a multiethnic society. Image: Conclusions There is an equidistant trialogue and circular relations between art, religion, and science, without any specific supremacy. This can offer up from the start the possibility of a lasting harmonization, of information transfers and professional enhancements to support new developments, uplifting the human being through positive reorientations and beneficial recoveries. Abstract:Abstract As for the phrase “artistic education”, in this paper work, it was used in the way of cultivating individual, authentic artistic talent, of acquiring individual skills, abilities and techniques, with the aim of training artists in different fields of arts, as well as the assimilation of theoretical and practical knowledge from the fields of theory, aesthetics, criticism and history of arts etc., adapted to natural, innate capacities with a view to non-verbal creative expression and development plastic expressiveness. Art education and art therapy have in common the fact that they are forms of applications of art that integrate theories and practices of art pedagogy in a supportive environment: museums, art galleries, ambient art - street or interior - nature, classrooms or creative studios, where artists use the influences offered by the environments specific to the practice of the arts, which by their pluri/inter/trans-disciplinary character, encourage freedom of creation, thought, expression and imagination. Being “postmodernist” in art therapy, as Shirley Riley sees it, assumes a renunciation of programmed knowledge. For the art therapist it is essential to become the “student” of the client and to “learn from each client the meaning of the situation that he brings”. Through “co-constructive” therapy with the client, the art therapist becomes a collaborator in the therapeutic activity. Art therapy, as a component of occupational therapy, aims to correct the consequences of the disease that caused the disability or handicap, the development of adaptive skills, so that a person with a certain degree of incapacity can make the most of his or her remaining potential, in order to recover (both at family and professional level), by integrating into a useful activity at the highest level accessible to him. The therapeutic methods of the current era experiment with ways specific to each art, to achieve interdisciplinary exchanges. They connect to disciplines such as psychology or psychiatry, anthropology, history, religion, to experience the primary therapeutic values of contemporary art.

Abstract:Introduction Art therapy, occupational and play therapy support the idea that man becomes what he is through activity. We accept man in his totality, we oppose the rigid boundaries between "sick" and "healthy", there is no contradiction between these states, but only an unbroken chain of neighboring nuances, of gradual differences of human life. Objectives Therapies based on the visual arts are also used in the discharge of repressed experiences, called in psychoanalytic terms "catharsis", with the aim of preventing or remedying dysfunctions, facilitating maximum adaptability of the beneficiary, regardless of the degree of handicap. The activities of occupational therapy and ergotherapy has and productive objectives, in accordance with the outstanding, hidden skills, correlated with the current demands on the labor market. Art forms called: "Raw Art" can be practiced. Methods Traditional crafts and visual arts are reinvented as therapeutic methods. We use pottery and sculptural artistic ceramics with elements from the history of archaic arts connected with contemporary visual arts (pictures, sculpture, graphics, mixed arts and multimedia) Results The creative process and symbolic communication, associated with narration and imitation, develop new ways of communication, new ways of self-expression, new ways of seeing things. Abstract:The article analyzes scientific sources on the problem of rehabilitation of persons by means of art therapy. The author substantiated that art therapy as a method of personality rehabilitation plays one of the leading roles, because the ability of creativity to heal the soul has been known since ancient times. A variety of treatment and art methods are effective in rehabilitation and socialization. Their widespread implementation in practical activities allows to increase the quality of the process of social and psychological rehabilitation, normalize mental health, as well as maximally integrate people with special educational needs into society. The author also highlights the characteristics of art therapy: it promotes creative self-expression, development of imagination, aesthetic experience, practical skills of fine arts, artistic abilities; relieves fatigue, reduces negative emotional states and performances; creates a positive emotional mood in the group; allows you to process a person's thoughts and emotions; it is used for oppression, it makes it possible to transform them into positive ones; provides an opportunity on a symbolic level to experiment with a wide range of feelings, explore and express them in a socially acceptable way; creates conditions for experimentation with kinesthetic and visual sensations, stimulates the development of sensorimotor skills and the right hemisphere as a whole. the brain, which is responsible for intuition and orientation in space; facilitates the process of communication with other people; promotes the creation of relationships of mutual acceptance and empathy; allows solving those real problems that are difficult to discuss; develops a sense of internal control; increases a person's adaptability to everyday life; effective in correcting various deviations.

Abstract:Phantasy Therapy is an interdisciplinary depth-psychologically oriented group therapy form with focus on the treatment of psychoses in acute and remission phases. A different theme is presented to the patients every week on two consecutive days (90 min per session), coherently, via various sensory channels. On the first day, the theme is concretely and operationally introduced by means of an object, transformed into movement in the broadest sense of the word, and experienced directly with the body. The first session ends with a story, usually a fairy tale or parable, so that the body experiences can be further realized symbolically at the cognitive-emotional level. The second session treats the same theme via repetition of the chosen story with the deeper transformation of symbols into color and form. The first day is jointly led by a psychotherapist and a movement/ dance therapist, the second day by a psychotherapist and an art therapist. Our approach understands therapy as a somatesthetic experience- and synthetic expression-oriented encounter with the patient via the therapist's empathic imaginative identification with the patient by means of a progressively orchestrated, positivizing, cognitive-emotional, theme-centered rapport. In this connection six therapeutic elements are of importance: theme, object, movement, fairy tale, artwork, symbol. Phantasy Therapy offers the patient creative freedom in a humorous and playful way within a certain therapeutic security (Amae principle) and contradicts several classical prejudices concerning the treatment of psychotic patients.

Abstract:Background: Hospitalization can be an extremely distressing experience for seriously ill and injured children. Art therapy has a well-established clinical history, and recent research has begun to demonstrate its effectiveness in somatic pediatric wards. Descriptive and statistical research indicates that art therapy can alleviate anxiety and fear, improve mood, and enhance communication among children, parents, and healthcare professionals. This study aims to enhance our understanding of the specific elements of art therapy that facilitate a connection with the healthier aspects of the self. Method: A total of 12 hospitalized children, aged 4–12, participated in an art therapy session led by a certified art therapist. Verbalizations during the sessions were recorded, and subsequent observations were synchronized with verbatim transcriptions of audio recordings. A reflexive thematic analysis was conducted to identify relevant patterns of meaning. Findings: The study identified four significant dimensions of the children's experiences during art therapy: (1) The child feels safe, (2) The child becomes a competent artist, bursting with creativity, (3) The healthy child emerges, and (4) The child achieves something beyond its limits – a triumph. Discussion: The active ingredients contributing to effective art therapy include the stimulation of creativity, guided art-making with scaffolding support, task variation, granting children control over the artistic process, encouragement of free expression, and the display of positive regard. This study also delves into the therapeutic alliance, emphasizing its role in facilitating children's learning, self-expression, concentration, and the creation of work they take pride in. Additionally, certain psychotherapy-like interactions, such as control-mastery dynamics, were observed. Nevertheless, more extensive research with larger sample sizes is required to draw broader conclusions.

Hemodynamic Management and Outcome of Patients Treated for Cerebral Vasospasm with Intraarterial Nicardipine and/or Milrinone

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Vasospasm is a potentially devastating complication after aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage. Although endovascular treatment with intraarterial nicardipine and milrinone is an accepted clinical treatment strategy, there is little information either on hemodynamic management during treatment or on outcome and consequences of the hemodynamic management. We tested 2 hypotheses: (1) intraarterial administration of nicardipine and milrinone to treat cerebral vasospasm would require increased administration of vasoconstrictor to support arterial blood pressure at target levels; and (2) high-dose vasopressors administered to increase blood pressure in these patients would lead to systemic acidosis and end-organ ischemic damage. METHODS: We conducted a single-center, retrospective review of consecutive patients with clinically symptomatic vasospasm after aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage that failed medical management with “triple H therapy” and subsequently received intraarterial nicardipine and/or milrinone between March 2005 and July 2007. RESULTS: Of 160 endovascular interventions in 73 patients (aged 52 ± 10 years; 50 women), 96 received only nicardipine, 5 only milrinone, and 59 both drugs. General anesthesia with muscle relaxation was performed for 93% of procedures. During treatment, both the number and dose of vasopressors required to maintain arterial blood pressure at target levels increased; the median dose of phenylephrine increased from 200 (n = 121) to 325 &mgr;g/min (n = 122), norepinephrine increased from 12 (n = 60) to 24.5 &mgr;g/min (n = 87), and vasopressin infusions increased from 7 to 24. Nonetheless, arterial blood pressure decreased 13% during treatment. In >90% of procedures, the postprocedure angiogram showed improved vessel caliber. A single patient demonstrated troponin T increase; no patients had a decrease in renal function, bowel or peripheral ischemia, systemic acidosis, or acute stroke. Overall mortality was 11%. CONCLUSIONS: Intraarterial administration of nicardipine and/or milrinone requires use of vasopressors to maintain arterial blood pressure. Despite high doses of vasoconstrictors, treatment has low mortality, minimal end-organ ischemic damage or systemic acidosis, and results in improved caliber of cerebral vessels affected by vasospasm.
‘The silent intermediary’: a co-authored exploration of a client’s experience of art psychotherapy for C-PTSD

Abstract:<span>This article presents a client's (art therapee's) conceptualisation of his experience of art psychotherapy for symptoms of complex post-traumatic stress disorder (C-PTSD).He was receiving treatment through a community adult mental health team within the UK National Health Service.The art therapee wrote about his art psychotherapy experience, and then he and his art psychotherapist identified key themes. They related his account to art psychotherapy theory and evidence and drew out implications of his experience for art psychotherapy research.The art therapee found that an art psychotherapy approach was helpful in these ways: having control; expressing without words; distancing from trauma; being creative and playful. He identified some aspects of the art psychotherapy which seem to be under-represented in art psychotherapy literature: the importance of the therapist's acceptance of the client's artwork for building trust; the way in which artmaking bypasses the fear of 'telling' about past abuse; and the therapeutic value of creativity and play for accessing positive aspects of the child self.It would be valuable to gain information from other clients with C-PTSD about their experiences of art psychotherapy. Abstract:Objective: Despite arts advancement and advocacy in education, research, and clinical practice, the arts, including music, dance, theater, and visual art, continue to be largely viewed as stimulating and not necessarily scientifically sound disciplines. This article describes the intentional and methodical use of artistic inquiry to expand the grasp of the mental health condition of depression and suggest ways to engage with it. Methods: Different art forms, dance/movement, collage, sculpting, photography, and watercolor were utilized in separate artistic inquiries to explore and better understand the phenomenon of depression, specifically the elements emptiness, hopelessness, and uncertainty. Results: The engagement with art revealed that darkness promotes the germination of something new and valuable. Another discovery was that change is constant in life and can be a comforting fact considering that depression may feel interminable. Last, connection was found to be crucial. When two colors were blended, they yielded another hue and thus a novel outlook on life. Conclusions and Implications for Practice: Artistic inquiry is not only an intuitive and freely accessible tool, but it also offers a unique understanding of the human condition that is rich in meaning and personally relevant. By methodically engaging with art during uncertainties or when facing a clinical or personal challenge, practitioners can increase their insight and develop exceptional and creative solutions that may contribute to psychiatric rehabilitation and recovery. Abstract:A recent meta-analysis revealed that mental health and baseline psychological impairment affect the quality of life and outcomes in different chronic conditions. Implementing mental health care in physical care services is still insufficient. Thus, interdisciplinary communication across treatment providers is essential. The standardized language provided by the diagnostic statistical manual favors a clear conceptualization. However, this approach might not focus on the individual, as thinking in categories might impede recognizing the continuum from healthy to diseased. Psychoanalytic theory is concerned with an individual's unconscious conflictual wishes and motivations, manifested through enactments like psychic symptoms or (maladaptive) behavior with long-term consequences if not considered. Such modifiable internal and external factors often are inadequately treated. However, together with the physical chronic condition constraints, these factors determine degrees of freedom for a self-determined existence. The effect of therapeutic interventions, and especially therapy adherence, relies on a solid therapeutic relationship. Outcome and process research still investigates the mechanism of change in psychotherapeutic treatments with psychanalysis's focus on attachment problems. This article examines existing knowledge about the mechanism of change in psychoanalysis under the consideration of current trends emerging from psychotherapy research. A clinical example is discussed. Additionally, further directions for research are given. The theoretical frame in psychoanalytic therapies is the affect-cognitive interface. Subliminal affect-perception is enabled via awareness of subjective meanings in oneself and the other; shaping this awareness is the main intervention point. The interactional ingredients, the patient's inherent bioenvironmental history meeting the clinician, are relevant variables. Several intrinsic, subliminal parameters relevant for changing behavior are observed. Therapeutic interventions aim at supporting the internalization of the superego's functions and at making this ability available in moments of self-reflection. By supporting mentalization abilities, a better understanding of oneself and higher self-regulation (including emotional regulation) can lead to better judgments (application of formal logic and abstract thinking). Thus, this facilitates enduring behavior change with presumably positive effects on mental and physical health.
A Conversational Model of art therapy

Abstract:This paper illustrates a 'Conversational Model' of art therapy. The Conversational Model was jointly created by Robert Hobson and Russell Meares. It is a developmental theory unique in its clinical application. The focus of the paper is two sessions that altered the course of therapy. In these sessions, variations on Donald Winnicott's "squiggle-game" and Hobson's "party game" were used to engage an isolative, reluctant incarcerated patient. The interventions illustrate the basic tenets of the Conversational Model. The theoretical process--from disruption to repair--is visually recorded in the artwork. The central argument of the paper is that interactive art therapy interventions can be effective, when used appropriately. By engaging the patient in a 'visual' conversation, he/she may develop an emotional vocabulary, a prerequisite for a psychotherapeutic conversation. The paper begins with a brief historical overview of the interface between art and psychoanalysis, the context out of which 'art therapy'--a distinct body of theory--evolved. Theory interweaves with clinical material in a narrative style. What I say and do in therapy is aimed at promoting understanding: a 'conversation', a meeting between two experiencing subjects (an I and a Thou), here and now, in such a way that learning can be effective in other relationships. If, as I believe, psychotherapy is a matter of promoting a personal dialogue, then we need to know how to receive, express, and share feeling: how to learn a language of the heart in its 'minute particulars'.

Abstract:Structured Trauma can impact an individual's ability to process memories, develop a healthy identity, express emotions, maintain focus, navigate relationships, and achieve goals. Despite the potential negative impacts of trauma, specific psychotherapeutic interventions and trauma-informed care provide opportunities for recovery and healing. Creative processes can promote trauma recovery. The literature suggests that creativity can support people in non-verbally processing memories, containing internal chaos, and restoring hope. Case examples highlight the approaches of an art therapist, social worker, and psychiatrist who introduced arts-based interventions to traumatized clients. The art therapist explores use of an ancient Japanese approach to repairing pottery with a 23-year-old who experienced sexual abuse and neglect. The social worker discusses how Janusian thinking and "creative destruction" inspired collage-making with a 15-year-old who witnessed domestic violence and experienced depressive symptoms. The psychiatrist considers how traumatic memory processing theory informed her structured drawing approach to traumatic grief work with an aggressive 10-year-old. Use of arts-based interventions assisted in overcoming client resistance to "talk therapy" approaches, offering a non-verbal, expressive alternative and supporting client progress toward treatment goals. Reflection on three case vignette led to several practice implications: (1) Professionals should use creative approaches carefully and responsibly, operating within their scope of practice, (2) Professionals should consider how arts-based interventions can strengthen trauma treatment, & (3) Increased provider collaboration and cross-disciplinary dialogue can enhance trauma informed care. More research on the effectiveness of creative approaches in trauma treatment is needed.

Abstract:Introduction A complex, Nature-, and Adventure Therapy - integrated Schema Therapeutic program (N-ABST) and a related efficacy study was launched in 2022 April at the Psychotherapy Department, at Semmelweis University. The participants had the opportunity of having outdoor, experience based group processes – seven full days in a month - in addition to the classic Schema Therapy (ST) sessions. According to the study design, 4-week long traditional thematic ST programs and 4-week long N-ABST programs were taken place alternately. Objectives Our aim was to compare the efficacy in a randomized, controlled design, short and medium terms. The participants of the programs and thus the target group of the research were adults, diagnosed mainly with Borderline Personality Disorder, inpatients in psychiatry. Methods This methodological innovation also meant the integration of two therapeutic teams in practice. When establishing the collaboration, we put emphasis on finding common points and understanding how N-AT contributes to schema therapy goals. During our joint work, it became clear that the elemental need for contact with nature enriched the schema therapy approach with a new basic need that was not included in it before. Measurements were taken before the start of the entire program and at the end of the 4-week cycle. Preliminary results are presented based on the Personality Inventory for DSM-5 - Hungarian Short Form (PID-5-HSF), and the Derogatis Symptom Checklist (SCL90). Results In the N-ABST group (n=23) the PID5 "Dysinhibition" scale (p < .01, Cohen's d = .636), and the "Negative Affectivity" scale (p < .05, Cohen's d = .388) showed significantly lower scores after therapy. In the case of the "Detachment" we have found a tendency to decrease after the therapy. Regarding the comparison of the effectiveness of N-ABST and classical Schema Therapy - with the current state of analysis - there was a significant difference in the PID5 values for "Suspiciousness" and "Manipulativeness". The former characteristic was reduced to a greater extent by the schema therapy, and the latter by the N-ABST therapy. Based on the SCL90, the N-ABST program resulted in a significant symptom reduction measured by the following subscales: somatization, obsessive compulsive, interpersonal sensitivity, depression, phobia. Global symptom severity also decreased significantly (p < .05, Cohen's d = .588). Conclusions According to our results, Nature- Adventure Therapy enhanced Schema Therapy seems to be an innovative and efficient method in the psychotherapy of personality disorders. Besides the effectiveness, there is a great challenge to design programs that are sustainable and therefore serves therapy long term as well. Arts-Based Research Approaches to Studying Mechanisms of Change in the Creative Arts Therapies

Abstract:The purpose of this preliminary qualitative research study is to explore the role and function of multiple dynamic interactive aesthetic and intersubjective phenomena in the creative arts therapies process relative to transformation in perception, behavior, relationship, and well-being. A group of doctoral students and faculty studied these phenomena in an analogous creative arts therapies laboratory context using a method called Intrinsic Arts-Based Research. Intrinsic Arts-Based Research is a systematic study of psychological, emotional, relational, and arts-based phenomena, parallel to those emergent in the creative arts therapies, using individual and collective intrinsic immersive and reflective experience in combination with qualitative and arts-based research methods. Our primary goal was to simulate the creative arts therapies experience in order to identify, document, and describe the complex transformative phenomena that occur at the nexus of arts-based expression, reflection, and relationships in the arts therapies. For the purposes of this paper transformation is defined as "…. a significant reconfiguration of perception and thought resulting in the lessening of psychic restraint and pain, allowing for the emergence of new psychological perspectives that contribute to living a more creative life" (Gerber et al., 2012, p. 45). Through a deductive thematic analysis of written accounts of these simulated creative arts therapies experiences by participant/researchers in the laboratory we identified three primary dynamic and interactive broad constructs that together, with more specific modifying themes, might account for and describe change within the creative arts therapies. These broad dynamic interactive themes are: ruptures, resolutions, and transformation; relationship and intersubjectivity; and, arts-based expressive processes. The more specific modifying themes include: dialectical rupture and resolution, relational attunements and ruptures, imaginational flow, transcendence and ruptures, sensory/kinesthetic/embodied ways of knowing, and intersubjective transcendence. We propose that change in the creative arts therapies is driven more by a dynamic system of interactive phenomena the varying combinations of which create conditions for relational attunement, imagination, dialectical tensions and creative resolutions, and the ultimately creative transformation.

Abstract:This paper reports the methodology of a research project based on and including a review of almost 1000 texts and more than 20 years of learning and supervised practice as clinician and supervisor in the psychotherapeutic professions on the nature of the therapeutic relationship. Following a pilot study by five years, the findings were reported in a 165,000 word document which encompasses poetry, personal experience, many textual extracts of theory or therapeutic dialogue, other research reports, theoretical considerations, clinical reflections, syllabus constructions—a postmodernist assemblage which nonetheless attempts coherence, validity and reliability. The findings have also been tested in the field for example by: (a) providing the framework for at least one four-year psychotherapy training course from which the first students have recently graduated by external assessment and (b) an independent psychotherapy accreditation process by a case study submission. It is argued that clinical practice or supervision should be inseparable from research—Particularly qualitative research in psychology.

Abstract:Creativity has been conceptualized not just as a measure of artistic ability, but also as an adaptive trait of everyday innovation. We posit the relevance of "everyday creativity" to the field of psychotherapy. Although creativity has been theorized in psychotherapy models of change and the therapy process, little empirical research has examined patients' and therapists' creativity in psychotherapy treatments. Moreover, creativity research has been hampered by the vast array of definitions and operationalizations of the construct. Despite a lack of direct evidence, there appears to be substantial overlap between the empirically observed characteristics of creativity and the aims of psychotherapy treatments. First, research on characteristics of creative individuals, by way of personality, cognition, emotion, and psychopathology might overlap with what we know about individuals who benefit from psychotherapy. Second, the therapeutic process might resemble a creative process, suggesting that creativity could be a mediator of treatment outcomes. Third, creativity may be seen as a treatment outcome in that it reflects the achievement of more open-minded thinking, cognitive and emotional flexibility, as well as diminished psychopathology. We take a hypothesis-generating stance, suggesting future research that could test a potential mediating/moderating role of creativity in psychotherapy.

Abstract:Creation is an important part of many interventions in creative arts therapies (art, music, dance, and drama therapy). This active part of art-making in arts therapies has not yet been closely investigated. The present study commits to this field of research using a mixed-methods design to investigate the effects of active creation on health-related psychological outcomes. In an artistic inquiry within an experimental design, <i>N</i> = 44 participants engaged in active art-making for eight minutes in the presence of the researcher (first author) with a choice of artistic materials: paper and colors for drawing and writing, musical instruments, space for moving or performing. Before and after the creation, participants completed a well-being, a self-efficacy and an experience of creation scale, and in addition found their own words to express the experiences during the activity. We hypothesized that the experience of empowerment, freedom, impact, and creativity (Experience of Creation Scale) mediates the positive effect of active creation on the outcomes of self-efficacy and well-being, and evaluated this assumption with a mediation analysis. Results suggest that the effect of active creation on both self-efficacy and well-being is significantly mediated by the Experience of Creation Scale. This article focuses on the quantitative side of the investigation. During the process, qualitative and quantitative results were triangulated for a more valid evaluation and jointly contribute to the emerging theory frame of embodied aesthetics.
