Abstract:The evident need for an advanced insulating material surpassing mineral oil in terms of cooling, insulation effectiveness, eco-friendliness, and operational efficiency in extreme weather conditions has driven a growing emphasis on environmentally sustainable and renewable insulating materials for high-voltage (HV) equipment. This shift in focus is motivated by concerns regarding environmental impact, petroleum scarcity, and waste oil disposal. Traditional HV equipment traditionally relies on mineral/synthetic oil and solid insulation materials such as paper and pressboard. However, emerging environmental regulations and economic factors have stimulated the development of eco-friendly insulating materials. This article investigates the latest advancements in environmentally friendly insulating materials, encompassing their production, processing, and characteristics. It underscores the advantages of these renewable insulating systems over conventional materials, emphasizing their superior performance and eco-friendly qualities. In this research, a new concept of preparation of insulating fluid for HV equipment insulation is introduced, for which the green synthesis method is used, involving the extraction of nanoparticles from leaves of the apple plant and subsequently dispersing them within vegetable oils to form nanofluids (NFs). Furthermore, the article delves into the influence of TiO 2 , SiO 2 , and Al 2 O 3 nanoparticles on sunflower and mustard oil at different % w/v concentrations of NPs. Comparative tests are conducted between nanofluids generated through the green synthesis method at different % w/v concentrations of TiO 2 , SiO 2 , and Al 2 O 3 NPs. The AC/DC BDV results indicate that the proposed nanofluids, containing 0.02% w/v titania (TiO 2 ) in 275 mL of oil sample, demonstrate superior insulating properties and AC/DC breakdown voltage (BDV). The results suggest that NFs based on vegetable oil provide a practical alternative to traditional mineral oil for several reasons. Vegetable oil is not only eco-friendly, but it is also a renewable resource and biodegradable, unlike conventional mineral oil, which is petroleum-based and non-renewable. Moreover, NFs based on vegetable oil are cost-effective.
