Abstract:We use the string diagram calculus to give graphical proofs of the basic results of Etingof, Nikshych and Ostrik on fusion categories. These results include: the quadruple dual is canonically isomorphic to the identity, positivity of the paired dimensions, and Ocneanu rigidity. We introduce the pairing convention as a convenient graphical framework for working with fusion categories. We use this framework to express the pivotal operators as a product of the apex associator monodromy and the pivotal indicators. We also characterize pivotal structures as solutions of an explicit set of algebraic equations over the complex numbers.

The Classification of Fusion 2-Categories

Abstract:We classify (multi)fusion 2-categories in terms of braided fusion categories and group cohomological data. This classification is homotopy coherent -- we provide an equivalence between the 3-groupoid of (multi)fusion 2-categories up to monoidal equivalences and a certain 3-groupoid of commuting squares of $\mathrm{B}\mathbb{Z}/2$-equivariant spaces. Rank finiteness and Ocneanu rigidity for fusion 2-categories are immediate corollaries of our classification.

Fusions and Dualities for 3d Theories $T[M_3]$

Abstract:We study 3d theories determined by three-manifolds. Previously, we found that some basic 3d dualities relate to the surgeries of three-manifolds and defined gauge circles and matter circles. In this note, we discuss some operations including handle slides, gaugings and flips of mass parameters, and the corresponding geometric interpretations for these operations. We note that a fusion identity could describe the fusion, or in other words, the connected sum of matter circles. Many abelian dualities could arise from this fusion and inherit geometric interpretations thereof.

On a class of fusion 2-category symmetry: condensation completion of braided fusion category

Abstract:Recently, many studies are focused on generalized global symmetry, a mixture of both invertible and non-invertible symmetries in various space-time dimensions. The complete structure of generalized global symmetry is described by higher fusion category theory. In this paper, We first review the construction of fusion 2-category symmetry $\Sigma \cal B$ where $\cal B$ is a a braided fusion category. In particular, we elaborate on the monoidal structure of $\Sigma \cal B$ which determines fusion rules and controls the dynamics of topological operators/defects. We then take $\Sigma \mathrm{sVec}$ as an example to demonstrate how we calculate fusion rule, quantum dimension and 10j-symbol of the fusion 2-category. With our algorithm, all these data can be efficiently encoded and computed in computer program. The complete program will be uploaded to github soon. Our work can be thought as explicitly computing the representation theory of $\cal B$, in analogy to, for example the representation theory of $SU(2)$. The choice of basis bimodule maps are in analogy to the Clebsch-Gordon coefficients and the 10j-symbol are in analogy to the 6j-symbol.

Fiber 2-Functors and Tambara-Yamagami Fusion 2-Categories

Abstract:We introduce group-theoretical fusion 2-categories, a strong categorification of the notion of a group-theoretical fusion 1-category. Physically speaking, such fusion 2-categories arise by gauging subgroups of a global symmetry. We show that group-theoretical fusion 2-categories are completely characterized by the property that the braided fusion 1-category of endomorphisms of the monoidal unit is Tannakian. Then, we describe the underlying finite semisimple 2-category of group-theoretical fusion 2-categories, and, more generally, of certain 2-categories of bimodules. We also partially describe the fusion rules of group-theoretical fusion 2-categories, and investigate the group gradings of such fusion 2-categories. Using our previous results, we classify fusion 2-categories admitting a fiber 2-functor. Next, we study fusion 2-categories with a Tambara-Yamagami defect, that is $\mathbb{Z}/2$-graded fusion 2-categories whose non-trivially graded factor is $\mathbf{2Vect}$. We classify these fusion 2-categories, and examine more closely the more restrictive notion of Tambara-Yamagami fusion 2-categories. Throughout, we give many examples to illustrate our various results.

Abstract:We construct (2+1)-dimensional lattice systems, which we call fusion surface models. These models have finite non-invertible symmetries described by general fusion 2-categories. Our method can be applied to build microscopic models with, for example, anomalous or non-anomalous one-form symmetries, 2-group symmetries, or non-invertible one-form symmetries that capture non-abelian anyon statistics. The construction of these models generalizes the construction of the 1+1d anyon chains formalized by Aasen, Fendley, and Mong. Along with the fusion surface models, we also obtain the corresponding three-dimensional classical statistical models, which are 3d analogues of the 2d Aasen-Fendley-Mong height models. In the construction, the "symmetry TFTs" for fusion 2-category symmetries play an important role.

Fusion 3-Categories for Duality Defects

Abstract:We study the fusion 3-categorical symmetries for quantum theories in (3+1)d with self-duality defects. Such defects have been realized physically by half-space gauging in theories with 1-form symmetries $A[1]$ for an abelian group $A$, and have found applications in the continuum and the lattice. These fusion 3-categories will be called (generalized) Tambara-Yamagami fusion 3-categories $(\mathbf{3TY})$. We consider the Brauer-Picard and Picard 4-groupoids to construct these categories using a 3-categorical version of the extension theory introduced by Etingof, Nikshych and Ostrik. These two 4-groupoids correspond to the construction of duality defects either directly in 4d, or from the 5d Symmetry Topological Field Theory (SymTFT). The Witt group of non-degenerate braided fusion 1-categories naturally appears in the aforementioned 4-groupoids and represents enrichments of standard duality defects by (2+1)d TFTs. Our main objective is to study graded extensions of the fusion 3-category $\mathbf{3Vect}(A[1])$. Firstly, we use invertible bimodule 3-categories and the Brauer-Picard 4-groupoid. Secondly, we use that the Brauer-Picard 4-groupoid of $\mathbf{3Vect}(A[1])$ can be identified with the Picard 4-groupoid of its Drinfeld center. Moreover, the Drinfeld center of $\mathbf{3Vect}(A[1])$, which represents topological defects of the SymTFT, is completely described by a sylleptic strongly fusion 2-category formed by topological surface defects of the SymTFT. These are classified by a finite abelian group equipped with an alternating 2-form. We relate the Picard 4-groupoid of the corresponding braided fusion 3-categories with a generalized Witt group constructed from certain graded braided fusion 1-categories using a twisted Deligne tensor product. We perform explicit computations for $\mathbb{Z}/2$ and $\mathbb{Z}/4$ graded $\mathbf{3TY}$ categories.

Fusion-stable structures on triangulation categories

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{G}$ be a fusion category acting on a triangulated category $\mathcal{D}$, in the sense that $\mathcal{D}$ is a $\mathcal{G}$-module category. Our motivation example is fusion-weighted species, which is essentially Heng's construction. We study $\mathcal{G}$-stable tilting, cluster and stability structures on $\mathcal{D}$. In particular, we prove the deformation theorem for $\mathcal{G}$-stable stability conditions. A first application is that Duffield-Tumarkin's categorification of cluster exchange graphs of finite Coxeter-Dynkin type can be naturally realized as fusion-stable cluster exchange graphs. Another application is that the universal cover of the hyperplane arrangements of any finite Coxeter-Dynkin type can be realized as the space of fusion-stable stability conditions for certain ADE Dynkin quiver.

On the Dualizability of Fusion 2-Categories

Abstract:Over an arbitrary field, we prove that the relative 2-Deligne tensor product of two separable module 2-categories over a compact semisimple tensor 2-category exists. This allows us to consider the Morita 4-category of compact semisimple tensor 2-categories, separable bimodule 2-categories, and their morphisms. Categorifying a result of <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1312.7188" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1312.7188">arXiv:1312.7188</a>, we prove that separable compact semisimple tensor 2-categories are fully dualizable objects therein. In particular, it then follows from the main theorem of <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2211.04917" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2211.04917">arXiv:2211.04917</a> that, over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero, every fusion 2-category is a fully dualizable object of the above Morita 4-category. We explain how this can be extended to any field of characteristic zero. Finally, we discuss the field theoretic interpretation of our results.

Drinfeld Centers and Morita Equivalence Classes of Fusion 2-Categories

Abstract:We prove that the Drinfeld center of a fusion 2-category is invariant under Morita equivalence. We go on to show that the concept of Morita equivalence between connected fusion 2-categories recovers exactly the notion of Witt equivalence between braided fusion 1-categories. A strongly fusion 2-category is a fusion 2-category whose braided fusion 1-category of endomorphisms of the monoidal unit is $\mathbf{Vect}$ or $\mathbf{SVect}$. We prove that every fusion 2-category is Morita equivalent to the 2-Deligne tensor product of a strongly fusion 2-category and an invertible fusion 2-category. We proceed to show that every fusion 2-category is Morita equivalent to a connected fusion 2-category. As a consequence, we find that every rigid algebra in a fusion 2-category is separable. This implies in particular that every fusion 2-category is separable. Conjecturally, separability ensures that a fusion 2-category is 4-dualizable. We define the dimension of a fusion 2-category, and prove that it is always non-zero. Finally, we show that the Drinfeld center of any fusion 2-category is a finite semisimple 2-category.

Dichromatic state sum models for four-manifolds from pivotal functors

Abstract:A family of invariants of smooth, oriented four-dimensional manifolds is defined via handle decompositions and the Kirby calculus of framed link diagrams. The invariants are parameterised by a pivotal functor from a spherical fusion category into a ribbon fusion category. A state sum formula for the invariant is constructed via the chain-mail procedure, so a large class of topological state sum models can be expressed as link invariants. Most prominently, the Crane-Yetter state sum over an arbitrary ribbon fusion category is recovered, including the nonmodular case. It is shown that the Crane-Yetter invariant for nonmodular categories is stronger than signature and Euler invariant. A special case is the four-dimensional untwisted Dijkgraaf-Witten model. Derivations of state space dimensions of TQFTs arising from the state sum model agree with recent calculations of ground state degeneracies in Walker-Wang models. Relations to different approaches to quantum gravity such as Cartan geometry and teleparallel gravity are also discussed.

Abstract:We provide a parameterization of all fusion subcategories of the equivariantization by a group action on a fusion category. As applications, we classify the Hopf subalgebras of a family of semisimple Hopf algebras of Kac-Paljutkin type and recover Naidu-Nikshych-Witherspoon classification of the fusion subcategories of the representation category of a twisted quantum double of a finite group.

Abstract:A fusion category of rank $4$ has either four self-dual objects or exactly two self-dual objects. We study fusion categories of rank $4$ with exactly two self-dual objects, giving nearly a complete classification of those based ring that admit pseudo-unitary categorification. More precisely, we show that if $\mathcal{C}$ is such a fusion category, then its Grothendieck ring $K(\mathcal{C})$ must be one of seven based rings, six of which have know categorifications. In doing so, we classify all based rings associated with near-group categories of the group $\mathbb{Z}/3\mathbb{Z}$.

Abstract:We study generalized symmetries of quantum field theories in 1+1D generated by topological defect lines with no inverse. This paper follows our companion paper on gapped phases and anomalies associated with these symmetries. In the present work we focus on identifying fusion category symmetries, using both specialized 1+1D methods such as the modular bootstrap and (rational) conformal field theory (CFT), as well as general methods based on gauging finite symmetries, that extend to all dimensions. We apply these methods to $c = 1$ CFTs and uncover a rich structure. We find that even those $c = 1$ CFTs with only finite group-like symmetries can have continuous fusion category symmetries, and prove a Noether theorem that relates such symmetries in general to non-local conserved currents. We also use these symmetries to derive new constraints on RG flows between 1+1D CFTs.
Generalised 6j symbols over the category of $G$-graded vector spaces

Abstract:Any choice of a spherical fusion category defines an invariant of oriented closed 3-manifolds, which is computed by choosing a triangulation of the manifold and considering a state sum model that assigns a 6j symbol to every tetrahedron in this triangulation. This approach has been generalized to oriented closed 3-manifolds with defect data by Meusburger. In a recent paper, she constructed a family of invariants for such manifolds parametrised by the choice of certain spherical fusion categories, bimodule categories, finite bimodule functors and module natural transformations. Meusburger defined generalised 6j symbols for these objects, and introduces a state sum model that assigns a generalised 6j symbol to every tetrahedron in the triangulation of a manifold with defect data, where the type of 6j symbol used depends on what defect data occur within the tetrahedron. The present work provides non-trivial examples of suitable bimodule categories, bimodule functors and module natural transformation, all over categories of $G$-graded vector spaces. Our main result is the description of module functors in terms of matrices, which allows us to classify these functors when $G$ is a finite cyclic group. Furthermore, we calculate the generalised 6j symbols for categories of $G$-graded vector spaces, (bi-)module categories over such categories and (bi-)module functors.

Rigid and Separable Algebras in Fusion 2-Categories

Abstract:Rigid monoidal 1-categories are ubiquitous throughout quantum algebra and low-dimensional topology. We study a generalization of this notion, namely rigid algebras in an arbitrary monoidal 2-category. Examples of rigid algebras include $G$-graded fusion 1-categories, and $G$-crossed fusion 1-categories. We explore the properties of the 2-categories of modules and of bimodules over a rigid algebra, by giving a criterion for the existence of right and left adjoints. Then, we consider separable algebras, which are particularly well-behaved rigid algebras. Specifically, given a fusion 2-category, we prove that the 2-categories of modules and of bimodules over a separable algebra are finite semisimple. Finally, we define the dimension of a connected rigid algebra in a fusion 2-category, and prove that such an algebra is separable if and only if its dimension is non-zero.

Abstract:Crane and Frenkel proposed a state sum invariant for triangulated 4-manifolds. They sketched the definition of a Hopf category that was to be used in their construction. Crane and Yetter studied Hopf categories and gave some examples using group cocycles that are associated to the Drinfeld double of a finite group. In this paper we define a state sum invariant of triangulated 4-manifolds using Crane–Yetter cocycles as Boltzmann weights. Our invariant is analogous to the 3-dimensional invariants defined by Dijkgraaf and Witten and the invariants that are defined via Hopf algebras. We present diagrammatic methods for the study of such invariants that illustrate connections between Hopf categories and moves to triangulations.

On Low-Rank Multiplicity-Free Fusion Categories

Abstract:This thesis explains the methods and algorithms we used to obtain explicit F symbols, R symbols, and pivotal coefficients of all multiplicity-free pivotal fusion categories up to rank 7. The thesis starts by introducing the concept of a unitary modular fusion system via two applications: modeling anyons for topological quantum computation and calculating braid group representations. Next, the notions of a pivotal, spherical, braided, ribbon, and modular fusion system are introduced. Unitarity and its implications on the pivotal structure are discussed as well. The next part of the thesis is devoted to algorithms for finding fusion systems and compatible structures. First, an algorithm to find low-rank fusion rings is explained, and its results are given. Special attention is given to the structure of non-commutative fusion rings and the construction of songs, which are generalizations of the Tambara-Yamagami and Haagerup Izumi fusion rings, is given. Then, the algorithms used to find fusion systems are discussed. Particular attention is given to how the individual steps for solving the consistency equations are done with Anyonica, a software package we developed for working with fusion systems. Gauge and automorphism equivalence are reviewed, and algorithms that put solutions in a unitary gauge and remove redundant solutions are given. Some results on the categorification of all multiplicity-free pivotal fusion rings up to rank 7 are presented. The final part of the thesis is devoted to building models of anyons on graphs and how their behavior differs from those in the plane. The appendices contain a minimal mathematical exposition on fusion categories with their relation to fusion systems, a list of all multiplicity-free fusion rings up to rank 9 with information on categorifiability, a list of all multiplicity-free fusion categories up to rank 7, and data on some graph-braid models.

Abstract:We introduce fusion bialgebras and their duals and systematically study theirFourier analysis. As an application, we discover new efficient analyticobstructions on the unitary categorification of fusion rings. We prove theHausdorff-Young inequality, uncertainty principles for fusion bialgebras andtheir duals. We show that the Schur product property, Young's inequality andthe sum-set estimate hold for fusion bialgebras, but not always on their duals.If the fusion ring is the Grothendieck ring of a unitary fusion category, thenthese inequalities hold on the duals. Therefore, these inequalities areanalytic obstructions of categorification. We classify simple integral fusionrings of Frobenius type up to rank 8 and of Frobenius-Perron dimension lessthan 4080. We find 34 ones, 4 of which are group-like and 28 of which can beeliminated by applying the Schur product property on the dual. In general,these inequalities are obstructions to subfactorize fusion bialgebras.
