Abstract:We give a very short proof of the following result of Graham from 1980: For any finite coloring of Rd, d≥2, and for any α>0, there is a monochromatic (d+1)-tuple that spans a simplex of volume α. Our proof also yields new estimates on the number A=A(r) defined as the minimum positive value A such that, in any r-coloring of the grid points Z2 of the plane, there is a monochromatic triangle of area exactly A.

Abstract:This is a treatise on finite point configurations spanning a fixed volume to be found in a single color-class of an arbitrary finite (measurable) coloring of the Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^n$, or in a single large measurable subset $A\subseteq\mathbb{R}^n$. More specifically, we study vertex-sets of simplices, rectangular boxes, and parallelotopes, attempting to make progress on several open problems posed in the 1970s and the 1980s. As one of the highlights, we give the negative answer to a question of Erdős and Graham, by coloring the Euclidean plane $\mathbb{R}^2$ in $25$ colors without creating monochromatic rectangles of unit area. More generally, we construct a finite coloring of the Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^n$ such that no color-class contains the $2^m$ vertices of any (possibly rotated) $m$-dimensional rectangular box of volume $1$. A positive result is still possible if rectangular boxes of merely sufficiently large volumes are sought in a single color-class of a finite measurable coloring of $\mathbb{R}^n$, and we establish it under an additional assumption $n\geq m+1$. Also, motivated by a question of Graham on reasonable bounds in his result on monochromatic axes-aligned right-angled $m$-dimensional simplices, we establish its measurable coloring and density variants with polylogarithmic bounds, again in dimensions $n\geq m+1$. Next, we generalize a result of Erdős and Mauldin, by constructing an infinite measure set $A\subseteq\mathbb{R}^n$ such that every $n$-parallelotope with vertices in $A$ has volume strictly smaller than $1$. Finally, some results complementing the literature on isometric embeddings of hypercube graphs and on the hyperbolic analogue of the Hadwiger--Nelson problem also follow as byproducts of our approaches.

Abstract:We construct for every integer $k\geq 3$ and every real $\mu\in(0, \frac{k-1}{k})$ a set of integers $X=X(k, \mu)$ which, when coloured with finitely many colours, contains a monochromatic $k$-term arithmetic progression, whilst every finite $Y\subseteq X$ has a subset $Z\subseteq Y$ of size $|Z|\geq \mu |Y|$ that is free of arithmetic progressions of length $k$. This answers a question of Erdős, Nešetřil, and the second author. Moreover, we obtain an analogous multidimensional statement and a Hales-Jewett version of this result.

Abstract:We show that a finite coloring of an amenable group contains `many' monochromatic sets of the form $\{x,y,xy,yx\},$ and natural extensions with more variables. This gives the first combinatorial proof and extensions of Bergelson and McCutcheon's non-commutative Schur theorem. Our main new tool is the introduction of what we call `quasirandom colorings,' a condition that is automatically satisfied by colorings of quasirandom groups, and a reduction to this case.

Abstract:In the paper, we searh for monochromatic infinite additive structures involving polynomials on $\mathbb{N}$. Ultimately, we can prove that for any $r\in \mathbb{N}$, any distinct natural numbers $a,b$ and any $2$-coloring of $\mathbb{N}$, there exist subsets $B,C\subset \mathbb{N}$ with $|B|=r$ and $|C|=\infty$ such that there exists a color containing $B+aC$ and $B+bC$. In fact, for the specific question considered by us, we give a complete answer.

Abstract:We observe that an old theorem of Graham implies that for any positive integer $s$, there exists some positive integer $T(s)$ such that every $s$-colouring of $\mathbb{Z}^2$ contains a monochromatic pair of points $(x,y),(x',y')$ with $(x-x')^2 - (y-y')^2 = (T(s))^2$. By scaling, this implies that every finite colouring of $\mathbb{Q}^2$ contains a monochromatic pair of points $(x,y),(x',y')$ with $(x-x')^2 - (y-y')^2 = 1$, which answers in a strong sense a problem of Kosheleva and Kreinovich on a pseudo-Euclidean analogue of the Hadwiger-Nelson problem. The proof of Graham's theorem relies on repeated applications of van der Waerden's theorem, and so the resulting function $T(s)$ grows extremely quickly. We give an alternative proof in the weaker setting of having a second spacial dimension that results in a significantly improved bound. To be more precise, we prove that for every positive integer $s$ with $r\equiv 2 \pmod{4}$, every $s$-colouring of $\mathbb{Z}^3$ contains a monochromatic pair of points $(x,y,z),(x',y',z')$ such that $(x-x')^2 + (y-y')^2 - (z-z')^2 = (5^{(s-2)/4}(8\cdot 5^{(s-2)/2})!)^2$. In fact, we prove a stronger density version. The density version in $\mathbb{Z}^2$ remains open.

Abstract:Fernández-Bretón, Sarmiento and Vera showed that whenever a direct sum of sufficiently many copies of ${\mathbb Z}_4$, the cyclic group of order 4, is countably coloured there are arbitrarily large finite sets $X$ whose sumsets $X+X$ are monochromatic. They asked if the elements of order 4 are necessary, in the following strong sense: if $G$ is an abelian group having no elements of order 4, is it always the case there there is a countable colouring of $G$ for which there is not even a monochromatic sumset $X+X$ with $X$ of size 2? Our aim in this short note is to show that this is indeed the case.

Abstract:In this paper, we study Shen-Shi's colored multizeta values in positive characteristic, which are generalizations of multizeta values in positive characteristic by Thakur. We establish their fundamental properties, that include their non-vanishingness, sum-shuffle relations, $t$-motivic interpretation and linear independence. In particular, for the linear independence results, we prove that there are no nontrivial $\overline{k}$-linear relations among the colored multizeta values of different weights.

On the contrary, we show that for every polygonal norm (that is, the unit ball is a polygon) in the plane, there exists an infinite $\mathcal{M} \subset \mathbb{R}^2$ such that for every two-colouring of the plane there exists a monochromatic isometric copy of $\mathcal{M}$.

Abstract:We present a new algebraic-combinatorial approach to proving a Bezout-type inequality for zonoids in dimension three, which has recently been established by Fradelizi, Madiman, Meyer, and Zvavitch. Abstract:We study the number of monochromatic solutions to linear equations in a $2$-coloring of $\{1,\ldots,n\}$. We show that any nontrivial linear equation has a constant fraction of solutions that are monochromatic in any $2$-coloring of $\{1,\ldots,n\}$. We further study commonness of four-term equations and disprove a conjecture of Costello and Elvin by showing that, unlike over $\mathbb{F}_p$, the four-term equation $x_1 + 2x_2 - x_3 - 2x_4 = 0$ is uncommon over $\{1,\ldots,n\}$.

Abstract:We propose an open question that seeks to generalise the Four Colour Theorem from two to three dimensions. As an appetiser, we show that 12 instead of four colours are both sufficient and necessary to colour every 2-complex that embeds in a prescribed 3-manifold. However, our example of a 2-complex that requires 12 colours is not simplicial.

Abstract:Hindman's finite sums theorem states that in any finite coloring of the naturals, there is an infinite sequence all of whose finite subset sums are the same color. In 1979, Hindman showed that there is a finite coloring of the naturals so that no infinite sequence has all of its pairwise sums and pairwise products the same color. Hindman conjectured that for any $n$, a finite coloring of the naturals contains $n$ numbers all of whose subset sums and subset products are the same color. In this paper we prove the version of this statement where we color the rationals instead of the integers. In other words, we show that the pattern $\{ \sum_{i \in S}x_i, \prod_{i \in S}x_i \}$, where $S$ ranges over all nonempty subsets of $[n]$, is partition regular over the rationals.

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics, Volume 38, Issue 1, Page 609-628, March 2024. Hindman proved in 1979 that no matter how natural numbers are colored in [math] colors, for a fixed positive integer [math], there is an infinite subset [math] of numbers and a color [math] such that for any finite nonempty subset [math] of [math], the color of the sum of elements from [math] is [math]. Later, Taylor extended this result to colorings with an unrestricted number of colors and five unavoidable color patterns on finite sums. This result is referred to as a canonization of Hindman's theorem and parallels the canonical Ramsey theorem of Erdős and Rado. We extend Taylor's result from sums, that are linear combinations with coefficients 1, to several linear combinations with coefficients 1 and [math]. These results in turn could be interpreted as canonical-type theorems for solutions to infinite systems.

A Ramsey theorem for the reals

Abstract:We prove that for every colouring of pairs of reals with finitely-many colours, there is a set homeomorphic to the rationals which takes no more than two colours. This was conjectured by Galvin in 1970, and a colouring of Sierpi{ń}ski from 1933 witnesses that the number of colours cannot be reduced to one. Previously in 1985 Shelah had shown that a stronger statement is consistent with a forcing construction assuming the existence of large cardinals. Then in 2018 Raghavan and Todorčević had proved it assuming the existence of large cardinals. We prove it in $ZFC$. In fact Raghavan and Todorčević proved, assuming more large cardinals, a similar result for a large class of topological spaces. We prove this also, again in $ZFC$.

Abstract:In Euclidean Ramsey Theory usually we are looking for monochromatic configurations in the Euclidean space, whose points are colored with a fixed number of colors. In the canonical version, the number of colors is arbitrary, and we are looking for an `unavoidable' set of colorings of a finite configuration, that is a set of colorings with the property that one of them always appears in any coloring of the space. This set definitely includes the monochromatic and the rainbow colorings. In the present paper, we prove the following two results of this type. First, for any acute triangle $T$, and any coloring of $\mathbb{R}^3$, there is either a monochromatic or a rainbow copy of $T$. Second, for every $m$, there exists a sufficiently large $n$ such that in any coloring of $\mathbb{R}^n$, there exists either a monochromatic or a rainbow $m$-dimensional unit hypercube. In the maximum norm, $\ell_{\infty}$, we have a much stronger statement. For every finite $M$, there exits an $n$ such that in any coloring of $\mathbb{R}_\infty^n$, there is either a monochromatic or a rainbow isometric copy of $M$.
