Abstract:Effective refractive index of disordered all-dielectric metasurfaces consisting of gallium phosphide (GaP) spheres is studied by means of three-dimensional finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations at the wavelength of 532~nm. It is shown that a mixture of the high index nanoparticles with sizes close to the first magnetic and electric resonances randomly dispersed on metasurface may possess negative refraction. The dependence of the metasurface effective refractive index on the nanoparticle concentration and size is constructed. The feasibility of negative refraction at large concentrations of the high index resonant spheres is demonstrated. The negative effective refractive index is exhibited only for a monolayer of GaP spheres.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is: **To achieve negative refraction in the visible light band, especially on disordered all - dielectric resonant high - refractive - index metasurfaces**. Specifically, the author studied the effective refractive index of disordered all - dielectric metasurfaces composed of gallium phosphide (GaP) spheres, and explored the optical properties of these metasurfaces at a wavelength of 532 nm through three - dimensional finite - difference time - domain (FDTD) simulations. The main problems can be summarized as follows: 1. **Feasibility of negative refraction**: - Research shows that when the size of high - refractive - index nanoparticles is close to the first magnetic resonance and electric resonance, the mixture randomly distributed on the metasurface may exhibit negative refraction. - The author demonstrated the possibility of achieving negative refraction in high - refractive - index resonant spheres with a high concentration. 2. **Relationship between effective refractive index and nanoparticle concentration and size**: - The paper established the dependence between the effective refractive index of the metasurface and the nanoparticle concentration and size. - The results show that only the metasurface with a single - layer GaP sphere exhibits a negative effective refractive index. 3. **Advantages of disordered metasurfaces**: - Fabricating disordered - arranged scatterers is simpler than precisely - arranged ordered structures. - Disordered metasurfaces exhibit enhanced lens resolution in the visible light band because they can improve the resolution through wave - front shaping. 4. **Theoretical and experimental verification**: - The author used the FDTD simulation method to calculate the phase change of the Gaussian beam transmitted through the sample, thereby deriving the effective refractive index. - The research results show that under certain conditions, especially when the size of nanoparticles is close to magnetic resonance and electric resonance, disordered metasurfaces can achieve negative refraction. In conclusion, the main objective of this paper is to explore and verify whether disordered all - dielectric metasurfaces composed of high - refractive - index nanoparticles can achieve negative refraction in the visible light band, as well as the performance and potential applications of this phenomenon under different conditions.
