Abstract:Moiré superlattices provide a powerful tool to engineer novel quantum phenomena in two-dimensional (2D) heterostructures, where the interactions between the atomically thin layers qualitatively change the electronic band structure of the superlattice. For example, mini-Dirac points, tunable Mott insulator states, and the Hofstadter butterfly can emerge in different types of graphene/boron nitride moiré superlattices, while correlated insulating states and superconductivity have been reported in twisted bilayer graphene moiré superlattices. In addition to their dramatic effects on the single particle states, moiré superlattices were recently predicted to host novel excited states, such as moiré exciton bands. Here we report the first observation of moiré superlattice exciton states in nearly aligned WSe2/WS2 heterostructures. These moiré exciton states manifest as multiple emergent peaks around the original WSe2 A exciton resonance in the absorption spectra, and they exhibit gate dependences that are distinctly different from that of the A exciton in WSe2 monolayers and in large-twist-angle WSe2/WS2 heterostructures. The observed phenomena can be described by a theoretical model where the periodic moiré potential is much stronger than the exciton kinetic energy and creates multiple flat exciton minibands. The moiré exciton bands provide an attractive platform to explore and control novel excited state of matter, such as topological excitons and a correlated exciton Hubbard model, in transition metal dichalcogenides.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper attempts to address the observation and study of superlattice exciton states in transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) heterostructures. Specifically, the researchers aim to observe new exciton states induced by the moiré superlattice in nearly aligned WSe₂/WS₂ heterostructures and investigate the behavior of these exciton states under different doping conditions. ### Background of the Paper 1. **Moiré Superlattice**: When the lattice constants of two atomic layer materials are similar, a periodic moiré pattern forms between them, which can significantly alter the electronic band structure. 2. **Exciton States**: Monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (such as WSe₂ and WS₂) exhibit strong light-exciton interactions, with exciton binding energies much higher than those in traditional semiconductors (such as silicon or gallium arsenide). The exciton states in these materials can be further modulated by the moiré superlattice, forming new exciton bands. ### Research Objectives 1. **Observation of Moiré Exciton States**: Experimentally observe for the first time the formation of moiré exciton states in nearly aligned WSe₂/WS₂ heterostructures. 2. **Analysis of Exciton State Properties**: Study the properties of these exciton states using spectroscopic methods (such as absorption and photoluminescence spectra), particularly their behavior under different doping conditions. 3. **Theoretical Model**: Develop a theoretical model to explain the experimentally observed phenomena, especially the impact of strong coupling moiré superlattices on exciton states. ### Main Findings 1. **Multi-Peak Phenomenon**: In nearly aligned WSe₂/WS₂ heterostructures, the WSe₂ A exciton resonance splits into multiple peaks, which exhibit comparable oscillation intensities in the absorption spectrum. 2. **Doping Dependence**: These newly emerged exciton peaks exhibit different behaviors under doping conditions compared to monolayer WSe₂ and large twist angle WSe₂/WS₂ heterostructures. Notably, under electron doping, certain exciton peaks show significant blue shifts and changes in oscillation intensity. 3. **Theoretical Explanation**: By introducing a periodic moiré exciton potential model, the multi-peak phenomenon and doping dependence observed in experiments are explained. The model indicates that the moiré potential is much larger than the exciton kinetic energy, leading to flat exciton bands and highly localized exciton states in real space. ### Significance 1. **Exploration of New Exciton States**: The moiré superlattice provides a new platform for exploring and controlling new exciton states, such as topological exciton states and strongly correlated exciton Hubbard models. 2. **Control of Quantum Phenomena**: By tuning the moiré superlattice, precise control of quantum phenomena can be achieved, offering potential for developing new quantum devices. In summary, through a combination of experimental and theoretical approaches, this paper for the first time observes new exciton states induced by the moiré superlattice in nearly aligned WSe₂/WS₂ heterostructures and thoroughly analyzes the properties of these exciton states and their behavior under different doping conditions. This discovery provides an important foundation for the study and application of new exciton states.
