Abstract:The k -power hypergraph G(k) is the k -uniform hypergraph that is obtained by adding k−2 new vertices to each edge of a graph G , for k≥3 . A parity-closed walk in G is a closed walk that uses each edge an even number of times. In an earlier paper, we determined the eigenvalues of the adjacency tensor of G(k) using the eigenvalues of signed subgraphs of G . Here, we express the entire spectrum (that is, we determine all multiplicities and the characteristic polynomial) of G(k) in terms of parity-closed walks of G . Moreover, we give an explicit expression for the multiplicity of the spectral radius of G(k) . As a side result, we show that the number of parity-closed walks of given length is the corresponding spectral moment averaged over all signed graphs with underlying graph G . By extrapolating the characteristic polynomial of G(k) to k=2 , we introduce a pseudo-characteristic function which is shown to be the geometric mean of the characteristic polynomials of all signed graphs on G . This supplements a result by Godsil and Gutman that the arithmetic mean of the characteristic polynomials of all signed graphs on G equals the matching polynomial of G .

Abstract:A generalized power hypergraph $\mathcal{H}^k_s$ is obtained from a base hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$ by means of some simple edge-expansion operations. Kang, Liu, Qi and Yuan [8] proved that the nonzero eigenvalues of $\mathcal{H}$ give rise to nonzero eigenvalues of $\mathcal{H}^k_s$. In this paper we show that all nonzero eigenvalues of $\mathcal{H}^k_s$ may be computed from the eigenvalues of its base hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$ and of its subgraphs. To prove this, we derive spectral results about edge-expansion operations that may be interesting on their own sake.

On the Adjacency and Seidel Spectra of Hypergraphs

Abstract:A hypergraph generalizes the concept of an ordinary graph. In an ordinary graph, edges connect pairs of vertices, whereas in a hypergraph, hyperedges can connect multiple vertices at a time. In this paper, we obtain a relationship between the characteristic polynomial of Seidel and adjacency matrices of hypergraph and also compute all the eigenvalues of some k-uniform hypergraphs. Moreover, we estimate the adjacency and Seidel spectra of the uniform double hyperstar and sunflower hypergraph. In addition to that, we determine the Seidel spectrum and main Seidel eigenvalues of hyperstar.

Abstract:The $d$-th order Laplacian spectral moment of a $k$-uniform hypergraph is the sum of the $d$-th powers of all eigenvalues of its Laplacian tensor. In this paper, we obtain some expressions of the Laplacian spectral moments for $k$-uniform power hypergraphs, and these expressions can be represented by some parameters of graphs. And we show that some graphs can be determined by their high-order Laplacian spectrum by using the Laplacian spectral moments of power hypergraphs.

Abstract:Two k-uniform hypergraphs are said to be cospectral (E-cospectral), if their adjacency tensors have the same characteristic polynomial (E-characteristic polynomial). A k-uniform hypergraph H is said to be determined by its spectrum, if there is no non-isomorphic k-uniform hypergraph cospectral with H. In this note, we give a method for constructing E-cospectral hypergraphs, which is similar with Godsil–McKay switching. Some hypergraphs are shown to be determined by their spectra.

Abstract:Let $\h$ be a connected $k$-graph with maximum degree ${\Delta}\geq 2$ and let $\mu(\h, x)$ be the matching polynomial of $\h$. In this paper, we focus on studying the distribution of zeros of the matching polynomials of $k$-graphs. We prove that the zeros (with multiplicities) of $\mu(\h, x)$ are invariant under a rotation of an angle $2\pi/{\ell}$ in the complex plane for some positive integer $\ell$ and $k$ is the maximum integer with this property. Let $\lambda(\h)$ denote the maximum modulus of all zeros of $\mu(\h, x)$. We show that $\lambda(\h)$ is a simple root of $\mu(\h, x)$ and $$\Delta^{1\over k} \leq \lambda(\h)< \frac{k}{k-1}\big((k-1)(\Delta-1)\big)^{1\over k}.$$ To achieve these, we introduce the path tree $\T(\h,u)$ of $\h$ with respect to a vertex $u$ of $\h$, which is a $k$-tree, and prove that $$\frac{\mu(\h-u,x)}{\mu(\h, x)} = \frac{\mu(\T(\h,u)-u,x) }{\mu(\T(\h,u),x)},$$ which generalizes the celebrated Godsil's identity on the matching polynomial of graphs.

Abstract:Let G be a graph with n vertices, let A(G) be an adjacency matrix of G and let P-A(G,lambda) be the characteristic polynomial of A(G). The adjacency spectrum of G consists of eigenvalues of A(G). A graph G is said to be determined by its adjacency spectrum (DS for short) if other graphs with the same adjacency spectrum as G are isomorphic to G. In this paper, we investigate the spectral characterization of unicycle graphs with only two vertices of degree three. We use G(21)(s(1),s(2)) to denote the graph obtained from Q(s(1),s(2)) by identifying its pendant vertex and the vertex of degree two of P-3, where Q(s(1),s(2)) is the graph obtained by identifying a vertex of C-s1 and a pendant vertex of P-s2. We use G(31)(t(1),t(2)) to denote the graph obtained from circle with the vertices v(0)v(1)...v(t1+t2+1) by adding one pendant edge at vertices v(0) and v(t1+1), respectively. It is shown that G(21)(s(1),s(2)) (s(1)not equal 4,6, s(1)>= 3, s(2)>= 3) and G(31)(t(1),t(2)) (t(1)+t(2)not equal 2, t(2)>= t(1)>= 1) are determined by their adjacency spectrum.
Cored Hypergraphs, Power Hypergraphs and Their Laplacian H-Eigenvalues

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce the class of cored hypergraphs and power hypergraphs, and investigate the properties of their Laplacian H-eigenvalues. From an ordinary graph, one may generate a $k$-uniform hypergraph, called the $k$th power hypergraph of that graph. Power hypergraphs are cored hypergraphs, but not vice versa. Hyperstars, hypercycles, hyperpaths are special cases of power hypergraphs, while sunflowers are a subclass of cored hypergraphs, but not power graphs in general. We show that the largest Laplacian H-eigenvalue of an even-uniform cored hypergraph is equal to its largest signless Laplacian H-eigenvalue. Especially, we find out these largest H-eigenvalues for even-uniform sunflowers. Moreover, we show that the largest Laplacian H-eigenvalue of an odd-uniform sunflower, hypercycle and hyperpath is equal to the maximum degree, i.e., 2. We also compute out the H-spectra of the class of hyperstars. When $k$ is odd, the H-spectra of the hypercycle of size 3 and the hyperpath of length 3 are characterized as well.

Abstract:For a $hypergraph$ $\mathcal{G}=(V, E)$ with a nonempty vertex set $V=V(\mathcal{G})$ and an edge set $E=E(\mathcal{G})$, its $adjacency$ $matrix$ $\mathcal {A}_{\mathcal{G}}=[(\mathcal {A}_{\mathcal{G}})_{ij}]$ is defined as $(\mathcal {A}_{\mathcal{G}})_{ij}=\sum_{e\in E_{ij}}\frac{1}{|e| - 1}$, where $E_{ij} = \{e\in E\, |\, i, j \in e\}$. The $spectral$ $radius$ of a hypergraph $\mathcal{G}$, denoted by $\rho(\mathcal {G})$, is the maximum modulus among all eigenvalues of $\mathcal {A}_{\mathcal{G}}$. In this paper, we get a formula about the spectral radius which link the ordinary graph and the hypergraph, and represent some results on the spectral radius changing under some graphic structural perturbations. Among all $k$-uniform ($k\geq 3$) unicyclic hypergraphs with fixed number of vertices, the hypergraphs with the minimum, the second the minimum spectral radius are completely determined, respectively; among all $k$-uniform ($k\geq 3$) unicyclic hypergraphs with fixed number of vertices and fixed girth, the hypergraphs with the maximum spectral radius are completely determined; among all $k$-uniform ($k\geq 3$) $octopuslike$ hypergraphs with fixed number of vertices, the hypergraphs with the minimum spectral radius are completely determined. As well, for $k$-uniform ($k\geq 3$) $lollipop$ hypergraphs, we get that the spectral radius decreases with the girth increasing.

Abstract:A connected $k$-uniform hypergraph with $n$ vertices and $m$ edges is called $r$-cyclic if $n=m(k-1)-r+1$. For $r=1$ or $2$, the hypergraph is simply called unicyclic or bicyclic. In this paper we investigate hypergraphs that attain larger spectral radii among all simple connected $k$-uniform unicyclic and bicyclic hypergraphs. Specifically, by using some edge operations, the formula on power hypergraph eigenvalues, the weighted incidence matrix and a result on linear unicyclic hypergraphs, we determined the first five hypergraphs with larger spectral radius among all unicyclic hypergraphs and the first three over all bicyclic hypergraphs.

Abstract:The spectral Turán theorem states that the $k$-partite Turán graph is the unique graph attaining the maximum adjacency spectral radius among all graphs of order $n$ containing no the complete graph $K_{k+1}$ as a subgraph. This result is known to be stronger than the classical Turán theorem. In this paper, we consider hypergraph extensions of spectral Turán theorem. For $k\geq r\geq 2$, let $H_{k+1}^{(r)}$ be the $r$-uniform hypergraph obtained from $K_{k+1}$ by enlarging each edge with a new set of $(r-2)$ vertices. Let $F_{k+1}^{(r)}$ be the $r$-uniform hypergraph with edges: $\{1,2,\ldots,r\} =: [r]$ and $E_{ij} \cup\{i,j\}$ over all pairs $\{i,j\}\in \binom{[k+1]}{2}\setminus\binom{[r]}{2}$, where $E_{ij}$ are pairwise disjoint $(r-2)$-sets disjoint from $[k+1]$. Generalizing the Turán theorem to hypergraphs, Pikhurko [J. Combin. Theory Ser. B, 103 (2013) 220--225] and Mubayi and Pikhurko [J. Combin. Theory Ser. B, 97 (2007) 669--678] respectively determined the exact Turán number of $H_{k+1}^{(r)}$ and $F_{k+1}^{(r)}$, and characterized the corresponding extremal hypergraphs. Our main results show that $T_r(n,k)$, the complete $k$-partite $r$-uniform hypergraph on $n$ vertices where no two parts differ by more than one in size, is the unique hypergraph having the maximum $p$-spectral radius among all $n$-vertex $H_{k+1}^{(r)}$-free (resp. $F_{k+1}^{(r)}$-free) $r$-uniform hypergraphs for sufficiently large $n$. These findings are obtained by establishing $p$-spectral version of the stability theorems. Our results offer $p$-spectral analogues of the results by Mubayi and Pikhurko, and connect both hypergraph Turán theorem and hypergraph spectral Turán theorem in a unified form via the $p$-spectral radius.

Abstract:An $r$-uniform hypergraph is uniquely $k$-colorable if there exists exactly one partition of its vertex set into $k$ parts such that every edge contains at most one vertex from each part. For integers $k \ge r \ge 2$, let $\Phi_{k,r}$ denote the minimum real number such that every $n$-vertex $k$-partite $r$-uniform hypergraph with positive codegree greater than $\Phi_{k,r} \cdot n$ and no isolated vertices is uniquely $k$-colorable. A classic result by of Bollobás\cite{Bol78} established that $\Phi_{k,2} = \frac{3k-5}{3k-2}$ for every $k \ge 2$. We consider the uniquely colorable problem for hypergraphs. Our main result determines the precise value of $\Phi_{k,r}$ for all $k \ge r \ge 3$. In particular, we show that $\Phi_{k,r}$ exhibits a phase transition at approximately $k = \frac{4r-2}{3}$, a phenomenon not seen in the graph case. As an application of the main result, combined with a classic theorem by Frankl--Füredi--Kalai, we derive general bounds for the analogous problem on minimum positive $i$-degrees for all $1\leq i<r$, which are tight for infinitely many cases.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{U}(n,k)$ and $\Gamma(n,k)$ be the set of the $k$-uniform linear and nonlinear unicyclic hypergraphs having perfect matchings with $n$ vertices respectively, where $n\geq k(k-1)$ and $k\geq 3$. By using some techniques of transformations and constructing the incidence matrices for the hypergraphs considered, we get the hypergraphs with the maximal spectral radii among three kinds of hypergraphs, namely $\mathcal{U}(n,k)$ with $n= 2k(k-1)$ and $n\geq 9k(k-1)$, $\Gamma(n,k)$ with $n\geq k(k-1)$, and $\mathcal{U}(n,k)\cup \Gamma(n,k)$ with $n\geq 2k(k-1)$, where $k\geq 3$.

Characteristic Polynomials and Hypergraph Generating Functions via Heaps of Pieces

Abstract:It is a classical result due to Jacobi in algebraic combinatorics that the generating function of closed walks at a vertex $u$ in a graph $\mathcal{G}$ is determined by the rational function \[ \frac{\phi_{\mathcal{G}-u}(t)}{\phi_\mathcal{G}(t)} \] where $\phi_\mathcal{G}(t)$ is the characteristic polynomial of $\mathcal{G}$. In this paper, we show that the corresponding rational function for a hypergraph is also a generating function for some combinatorial objects in the hypergraph. We make use of the Heaps of Pieces framework, developed by Viennot, demonstrating its use on graphs, digraphs, and multigraphs before using it on hypergraphs. In the case of a graph $\mathcal{G}$, the pieces are cycles and the concurrence relation is sharing a vertex. The pyramids with maximal piece containing a vertex $u \in V(\mathcal{G})$ are in one-to-one correspondence with closed walks at $u$. In the case of a hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$, connected ``infragraphs'' can be defined as the set of pieces, with the same concurrence relation: sharing a vertex. Our main results are established by analyzing multivariate resultants of polynomial systems associated to adjacency hypermatrices.

On harmonious coloring of hypergraphs

Abstract:A harmonious coloring of a $k$-uniform hypergraph $H$ is a vertex coloring such that no two vertices in the same edge have the same color, and each $k$-element subset of colors appears on at most one edge. The harmonious number $h(H)$ is the least number of colors needed for such a coloring. The paper contains a new proof of the upper bound $h(H)=O(\sqrt[k]{k!m})$ on the harmonious number of hypergraphs of maximum degree $\Delta$ with $m$ edges. We use the local cut lemma of A. Bernshteyn.
