Abstract:In this paper, we derive a thermodynamically consistent non-isothermal diffuse interface model for phase transition and interface evolution involving heat transfer. This model is constructed by integrating concepts from classical irreversible thermodynamics with the energetic variational approach. By making specific assumptions about the kinematics of the temperature, we derive a non-isothermal Allen-Cahn equation. Through both asymptotic analysis and numerical simulations, we demonstrate that in the sharp interface limit, the non-isothermal Allen-Cahn equation converges to a two-phase Stefan-like problem, under a certain scaling of the melting/freezing energy. In this regime, the motion of the liquid-solid interface and the temperature interface coincide and are governed by the mean curvature, at least for a short time. The result provides a justification for the classical Stefan problem within a certain physical regime.

Abstract:Abstract. The present work considers a change in the momentum under the transfer of a solution through the interface. It is shown that pressure related to the partial volumes of components arises in a solution under diffusion. As a result, the distribution of the concentration of solution components differs qualitatively from the known solutions. In contrast to the description of one-dimensional interphase mass transfer using the convective diffusion problem, the proposed model provides the stationary exponential distribution of components in both phases. The model describes component segregation by the interface, observed in the experiments.

Abstract:We compare results of the exact field theory of phase separation in two dimensions with Monte Carlo simulations for the $q$-state Potts model with boundary conditions producing an interfacial region separating two pure phases. We confirm in particular the theoretical predictions that below critical temperature the surplus of non-boundary colors appears in drops along a single interface, while for $q>4$ at critical temperature there is formation of two interfaces enclosing a macroscopic disordered layer. These qualitatively different structures of the interfacial region can be discriminated through a measurement at a single point for different system sizes.

Abstract:We extend to finite temperature the fidelity approach to quantum phase transitions (QPTs). This is done by resorting to the notion of mixed-state fidelity that allows one to compare two density matrices corresponding to two different thermal states. By exploiting the same concept we also propose a finite-temperature generalization of the Loschmidt echo. Explicit analytical expressions of these quantities are given for a class of quasi-free fermionic Hamiltonians. A numerical analysis is performed as well showing that the associated QPTs show their signatures in a finite range of temperatures.

Abstract:Previously, we have introduced an abstract scalar field to generate a dynamical temperature and a covariant field equation to describe the heat propagation with finite speed—less than the speed of light—of action. Moreover, we have showed how this scalar field can be connected to the usual temperature (local equilibrium temperature) and the Fourier's heat conduction. In present Letter we make an attempt to point out that there is a dynamical phase transition between these two kinds of propagation, between a wave and a non-wave, or with an other context it is better to say, a dynamical phase transition between a non-dissipative and a dissipative thermal process.

On a Cahn-Hilliard system with source term and thermal memory

Abstract:A nonisothermal phase field system of Cahn-Hilliard type is introduced and analyzed mathematically. The system constitutes an extension of the classical Caginalp model for nonisothermal phase transitions with a conserved order parameter. It couples a Cahn-Hilliard type equation with source term for the order parameter with the universal balance law of internal energy. In place of the standard Fourier form, the constitutive law of the heat flux is assumed in the form given by the theory developed by Green and Naghdi, which accounts for a possible thermal memory of the evolution. This has the consequence that the balance law of internal energy becomes a second-order in time equation for the thermal displacement or freezing index, that is, a primitive with respect to time of the temperature. Another particular feature of our system is the presence of the source term in the equation for the order parameter, which entails additional mathematical difficulties because the mass conservation of the order parameter is lost. We provide several mathematical results under general assumptions on the source term and the double-well nonlinearity governing the evolution: existence and continuous dependence results are shown for weak and strong solutions to the corresponding initial-boundary value problem.

Connectivity of the diffuse interface and fine structure of minimizers in the Allen-Cahn theory of phase transitions

Abstract:In the Allen-Cahn theory of phase transitions, minimizers partition the domain in subregions, the sets where a minimizer is near to one or to another of the zeros of the potential. These subregions that model the phases are separated by a tiny Diffuse Interface. Understanding the shape of this diffuse interface is an important step toward the description of the structure of minimizers. We assume Dirichlet data and present general conditions on the domain and on the boundary datum ensuring the connectivity of the diffuse interface. Then we restrict to the case of two dimensions and show that the phases can be separated, in a certain optimal way, by a connected network with a well defined structure. This network is contained in the diffuse interface and is a priori unknown. Under general assumption on the potential and on the Dirichlet datum, we show that, if we assume that the phase are connected, then we can obtain precise information on the shape of the network and in turn a detailed description of the fine structure of minimizers. In particular we can characterize the shape and the size of the various phases and also how they depend on the surface tensions.

Abstract:A thermodynamically consistent framework able to model either diffusive and displacive phase transitions is proposed. The first law of thermodynamics, the balance of linear momentum equation and the Cahn-Hilliard equation for solute mass conservation are the governing equations of the model, which is complemented by a suitable choice of the Helmholtz free energy and consistent boundary and initial conditions.

Abstract:Liquid-liquid phase separation has recently emerged as an important topic in the context of cellular organization. Within this context, there are multiple poorly understood features; for instance hints of critical behavior in the plasma membrane, and how homeostasis maintains phase separation. In this paper, using statistical mechanics, we show that finite size effects in multicomponent mixtures can induce the system to behave as-if it were near a critical point, which we term apparent transitions. The apparent transition temperature is naturally driven towards the ambient temperature of the system.

Abstract:In self-gravitating stars, two dimensional or geophysical flows and in plasmas, long range interactions imply a lack of additivity for the energy; as a consequence, the usual thermodynamic limit is not appropriate. However, by contrast with many claims, the equilibrium statistical mechanics of such systems is a well understood subject. In this proceeding, we explain briefly the classical approach to equilibrium and non equilibrium statistical mechanics for these systems, starting from first principles. We emphasize recent and new results, mainly a classification of equilibrium phase transitions, new unobserved equilibrium phase transition, and out of equilibrium phase transitions. We briefly discuss what we consider as challenges in this field.

We prove uniqueness of the Gibbs measure in the high temperature region and coexistence of at least two Gibbs measures at low temperature. Abstract:Liquid-gas phase coexistence in a boundary-driven diffusive system is studied by analyzing fluctuating hydrodynamics of a density field defined on a one-dimensional lattice with a space interval $\Lambda$. When an interface width $\ell$ is much larger than $\Lambda$, the discrete model becomes the standard fluctuating hydrodynamics, where the phase coexistence condition is given by the local equilibrium thermodynamics. In contrast, when $\ell < \Lambda$, the most probable density profile is determined by a new variational principle, where the chemical potential at the interface is found to deviate from the equilibrium coexistence chemical potential. This means that metastable states at equilibrium stably appear near the interface as the influence of the particle current. The variational function derived in the theoretical analysis is also found to be equivalent to the variational function formulated in an extended framework of thermodynamics called global thermodynamics. Finally, the validity of the theoretical result is confirmed by numerical simulations.

Abstract:We study the appearance of a boundary condition along an interface between two regions, one with constant diffusivity $1$ and the other with diffusivity $\eps>0$, when $\eps\to0$. In particular, we take Fick's diffusion law in a context of reaction-diffusion equation with bistable nonlinearity and show that the limit of the reaction-diffusion equation satisfies the homogeneous Neumann boundary condition along the interface. This problem is developed as an application of heterogeneous diffusion laws to study the geometry effect of domain.

Abstract:We determine the phase diagrams of conservative diffusive contact processes by means of numerical simulations. These models are versions of the ordinary diffusive single-creation, pair-creation and triplet-creation contact processes in which the particle number is conserved. The transition between the frozen and active states was determined by studying the system in the subcritical regime and the nature of the transition, whether continuous or first order, was determined by looking at the fractal dimension of the critical cluster. For the single-creation model the transition remains continuous for any diffusion rate. For pair- and triplet-creation models, however, the transition becomes first order for high enough diffusion rate. Our results indicate that in the limit of infinite diffusion rate the jump in density equals 2/3 for the pair-creation model and 5/6 for the triplet-creation model.

Abstract:We consider diffusive lattice gases on a ring and analyze the stability of their density profiles conditionally to a current deviation. Depending on the current, one observes a phase transition between a regime where the density remains constant and another regime where the density becomes time dependent. Numerical data confirm this phase transition. This time dependent profile persists in the large drift limit and allows one to understand on physical grounds the results obtained earlier for the totally asymmetric exclusion process on a ring.

Abstract:We present a new phase-field formulation for the non-equilibrium interface kinetics. The diffuse interface is considered an integral of numerous representative volume elements (RVEs), in which there is a two-phase mixture with two conserved and two non-conserved concentration fields. This particular way of separating concentration fields leads to two distinct dissipative processes besides the phase boundary migration, i.e., trans-sharp-interface diffusion between different phases within a single RVE and trans-diffuse-interface diffusion between different RVEs within a single phase. A two-part mechanism is proposed to balance the driving forces and energy dissipation for diffusionless and diffusional processes in RVEs. Moreover, the classical interface friction and solute drag can be recovered by integrating the diffuse interface. Compared with the sharp interface theory, the present diffuse interface can reproduce the atomic simulated partial-drag self-consistently in thermodynamics.

Abstract:Non-convex free energies permit phase transitions to occur. The ensuing state of a body is non-homogeneous and endowed with interphase boundaries. Both the inhomogeneity and the interfaces may contribute to the free energy and thus affect the onset of the phase transition. The paper investigates these effects in a one-dimensional setting and for deformation control. The main conclusion is that the incipient phase mixture is characterized by a stable kernel of small but finite phase fraction. This kernel must not be confused with the unstable nucleus whose energy maximum must be overcome before the kernel can form. We consider also the energy landscape of partial equilibria in which the load is uniform but the phase fraction and the number of interfaces have not yet reached equilibrium.

Abstract:Isothermal compressible two-phase flows with and without phase transition are modeled, employing Darcy's and/or Forchheimer's law for the velocity field. It is shown that the resulting systems are thermodynamically consistent in the sense that the available energy is a strict Lyapunov functional. In both cases, the equilibria are identified and their thermodynamical stability is investigated by means of a variational approach. It is shown that the problems are well-posed in an $L_p$-setting and generate local semiflows in the proper state manifolds. It is further shown that a non-degenerate equilibrium is dynamically stable in the natural state manifold if and only if it is thermodynamically stable. Finally, it is shown that a solution which does not develop singularities exists globally and converges to an equilibrium in the state manifold.

Higher-order singular perturbation models for phase transitions

Abstract:Variational models of phase transitions take into account double-well energies singularly perturbed by gradient terms, such as the Cahn-Hilliard free energy. The derivation by $\Gamma$-convergence of a sharp-interface limit for such energy is a classical result by Modica and Mortola. We consider a singular perturbation of a double-well energy by derivatives of order $k$, and show that we still can describe the limit as in the case $k=1$ with a suitable interfacial energy density, in accord with the case $k=1$ and with the case $k=2$ previously analyzed by Fonseca and Mantegazza. The main isssue is the derivation of an optimal-profile problem on the real line describing the interfacial energy density, which must be conveniently approximated by minimum problems on finite intervals with homogeneous condition on the derivatives at the endpoints up to order $k-1$. To that end a careful study must be carried on of sets where sequences of functions with equibounded energy are ``close to the wells'' and have ``small derivatives'', in terms of interpolation inequalities and energy estimates.

Diffuse Interface Model for Two-Phase Flows on Evolving Surfaces with Different Densities: Global Well-Posedness

Abstract:We show existence and uniqueness of strong solutions to a Navier-Stokes/Cahn-Hilliard type system on a given two-dimensional evolving surface in the case of different densities and a singular (logarithmic) potential. The system describes a diffuse interface model for a two-phase flow of viscous incompressible fluids on an evolving surface. We also establish the validity of the instantaneous strict separation property from the pure phases. To show these results we use our previous achievements on local well-posedness together with suitable novel regularity results for the convective Cahn-Hilliard equation. The latter allows to obtain higher-order energy estimates to extend the local solution globally in time. To this aim the time evolution of energy type quantities has to be calculated and estimated carefully.
