Abstract:The shellability status of previously investigated simplicial complexes with up to 24 facets is settled. In case of shellability the exact number of shellings is determined. Our algorithm merely relies on the facets, and not on additional information such as the face-numbers.

Abstract:Imposing a strong condition on the linear order of shellable complexes, we introduce strong shellability. Basic properties, including the existence of dimension-decreasing strong shelling orders, are developed with respect to nonpure strongly shellable complexes. Meanwhile, pure strongly shellable complexes can be characterized by the corresponding codimension one graphs. In addition, we show that the facet ideals of pure strongly shellable complexes have linear quotients.

Abstract:We introduce the class of linearly shellable pure simplicial complexes. The characterizing property is the existence of a labeling of their vertices such that all linear extensions of the Bruhat order on the set of facets are shelling orders. Coxeter complexes of weak intervals and lower Bruhat intervals of parabolic right quotients, as type-selected Coxeter complexes of lower Bruhat intervals of parabolic left quotients, are proved to be linearly shellable. We also introduce the notion of linear strong shellability.

Abstract:In geometric, algebraic, and topological combinatorics, the unimodality of combinatorial generating polynomials is frequently studied. Unimodality follows when the polynomial is (real) stable, a property often deduced via the theory of interlacing polynomials. Many of the open questions on stability and unimodality of polynomials pertain to the enumeration of faces of cell complexes. In this paper, we relate the theory of interlacing polynomials to the shellability of cell complexes. We first derive a sufficient condition for stability of the $h$-polynomial of a subdivision of a shellable complex. To apply it, we generalize the notion of reciprocal domains for convex embeddings of polytopes to abstract polytopes and use this generalization to define the family of stable shellings of a polytopal complex. We characterize the stable shellings of cubical and simplicial complexes, and apply this theory to answer a question of Brenti and Welker on barycentric subdivisions for the well-known cubical polytopes. We also give a positive solution to a problem of Mohammadi and Welker on edgewise subdivisions of cell complexes. We end by relating the family of stable line shellings to the combinatorics of hyperplane arrangements. We pose related questions, answers to which would resolve some long-standing problems while strengthening ties between the theory of interlacing polynomials and the combinatorics of hyperplane arrangements.

Abstract:We introduce a notion of lexicographic shellability for pure, balanced boolean cell complexes, modelled after the $CL$-shellability criterion of Bj\"orner and Wachs for posets and its generalization by Kozlov called $CC$-shellability. We give a lexicographic shelling for the quotient of the order complex of a Boolean algebra of rank $2n$ by the action of the wreath product $S_2\wr S_n$ of symmetric groups, and we provide a partitioning for the quotient complex $\Delta (\Pi_n)/S_n $. Stanley asked for a description of the symmetric group representation $\beta_S $ on the homology of the rank-selected partition lattice $\Pi_n^S $ in [St2], and in particular he asked when the multiplicity $b_S(n)$ of the trivial representation in $\beta_S$ is 0. One consequence of the partitioning for $\dps $ is a (fairly complicated) combinatorial interpretation for $b_S(n) $; another is a simple proof of Hanlon's result that $b_{1,..., i}(n)=0$. Using a result of Garsia and Stanton, we deduce from our shelling for $\Delta (B_{2n})/S_2 \wr S_n$ that the ring of invariants $k[x_1,..., x_{2n}]^{S_2\wr S_n}$ is Cohen-Macaulay over any field $k$.
Reconstructing a Shellable Sphere from its Facet-Ridge Graph

Abstract:We show that the facet-ridge graph of a shellable simplicial sphere $\Delta$ uniquely determines the entire combinatorial structure of $\Delta$. This generalizes the celebrated result due to Blind and Mani (1987), and Kalai (1988) on reconstructing simple polytopes from their graphs. Our proof utilizes the notions of good acyclic orientations from Kalai's proof as well as $k$-systems introduced by Joswig, Kaibel, and Körner.

Abstract:The theory of shellable simplicial complexes brings together combinatorics, algebra, and topology in a remarkable way. Initially introduced by Alder for $q$-simplicial complexes, recent work of Ghorpade, Pratihar, and Randrianarisoa extends the study of shellability to $q$-matroid complexes and determines singular homology groups for a subclass of these $q$-simplicial complexes. In this paper, we determine the homotopy type of shellable $q$-simplicial complexes. Moreover, we establish the shellability of order complexes from lexicographically shellable $q$-simplicial complexes, that include the $q$-matroid complexes. This results in a comprehensive determination of the homology groups for any lexicographically shellable $q$-complexes.

Shelling of links and star clusters in edgewise subdivision of a simplex

Abstract:We investigate some combinatorial properties of the links and the star clusters of the faces in a concrete triangulation $T_{k,q}$ (the edgewise subdivision) of a $(k-1)$-simplex. We show that the link of a vertex in $T_{k,q}$ is the reduced order complexes of the product of chains and determine the number of combinatorially different links of all vertices of $T_{k,q}$. The combinatorial type of the link of an $s$-dimensional face of $T_{k,q}$ corresponds to the partition $(\lambda_1,\lambda_2,\ldots,\lambda_s)$ of $k$ into $s$ parts and further partitions of each $\lambda_i$. We introduce a new permutation statistic (the faithful initial part) and use it to describe the facets of the star cluster of a facet of $T_{k,q}$. Using a concrete shelling we show that the $i$-th entry of $h$-vector of the star cluster counts the number of permutations from $\mathbb{S}_k$ with exactly $i$ descents, taking into account the faithful initial part as the multiplicity. Finally, we describe a concrete shelling order for $T_{k,q}$, obtain a combinatorial interpretation and find a concrete formula for its $h$-vector.

Abstract:A simplicial complex $\Delta$ is a virtually Cohen-Macaulay simplicial complex if its associated Stanley-Reisner ring $S$ has a virtual resolution, as defined by Berkesch, Erman, and Smith, of length ${\rm codim}(S)$. We provide a sufficient condition on $\Delta$ to be a virtually Cohen-Macaulay simplicial complex. We also introduce virtually shellable simplicial complexes, a generalization of shellable simplicial complexes. Virtually shellable complexes have the property that they are virtually Cohen-Macaulay, generalizing the well-known fact that shellable simplicial complexes are Cohen-Macaulay.

Abstract:Let $\Delta$ be a pure simplicial complex on $n$ vertices having dimension $d$ and codimension $c = n-d-1$ in the simplex. Terai and Yoshida proved that if the number of facets of $\Delta$ is at least $\binom{n}{c}-2c+1$, then $\Delta$ is Cohen-Macaulay. We improve this result by showing that these hypotheses imply the stronger condition that $\Delta$ is vertex decomposable. We give examples to show that this bound is optimal, and that the conclusion cannot be strengthened to the class of matroids or shifted complexes. We explore an application to Simon's Conjecture and discuss connections to other results from the literature.

Lower bounds and integrality gaps in simplicial decomposition

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{K}$ be a finite pure simplicial $d$-complex, with oriented facets $\{F_i\}$, which is boundaryless in the sense that $\sum\partial F_i=0$. We call such a $\mathcal{K}$ an \textit{admissible $d$-complex}. Given an admissible $d$-complex, one can ask for the smallest collection $\{T_i\}$ of oriented $(d+1)$-simplices on the vertices of $\mathcal{K}$ which decomposes $\mathcal{K}$ in the sense that $\sum \partial T_i = \mathcal{K}$. Let the minimum size of such a collection be $V_\mathbb{Z}(\mathcal{K})$, and let $V_\mathbb{Q}(\mathcal{K})$ be the relaxed analog where fractional $(d+1)$-simplices may be used. We explain how these quantities may be computed via integer and linear programming, and show how lower bounds may be obtained by exploiting LP-duality. We then prove that $V_\mathbb{Q}$ and $V_\mathbb{Z}$ are both additive under disjoint union and connected sum along a $d$-simplex. The remainder of the paper explores integrality gaps between $V_\mathbb{Z}$ and $V_\mathbb{Q}$ in dimension 1, where we share what we believe is the simplest admissible complex with an integrality gap; and in dimension 2, where we collect some results on integrality gaps for triangulations of the 2-sphere for a companion paper with Zili Wang and Peter Doyle.

Pure Simplicial and Clique Complexes with a Fixed Number of Facets

Abstract:We study structural and enumerative aspects of pure simplicial complexes and clique complexes. We prove a necessary and sufficient condition for any simplicial complex to be a clique complex that depends only on the list of facets. We also prove a theorem that a class of ``triangle-intersection free" pure clique complexes are uniquely determined up to isomorphism merely from the facet-adjacency matrix. Lastly, we count the number of pure simplicial complexes with a fixed number of facets and find an upper bound to the number of pure clique complexes.

Abstract:Let $\mathscr{X}$ be the boundary complex of a $(d+1)$-polytope, and let $\rho(d+1,k) = \frac{1}{2}[{\lceil (d+1)/2 \rceil \choose d-k} + {\lfloor (d+1)/2 \rfloor \choose d-k}]$. Recently, the author, answering Bárány's question from 1998, proved that for all $\lfloor \frac{d-1}{2} \rfloor \leq k \leq d$, \[ f_k(\mathscr{X}) \geq \rho(d+1,k)f_d(\mathscr{X}). \] We prove a generalization: if $\mathscr{X}$ is a shellable, strongly regular CW sphere or CW ball of dimension $d$, then for all $\lfloor \frac{d-1}{2} \rfloor \leq k \leq d$, \[ f_k(\mathscr{X}) \geq \rho(d+1,k)f_d(\mathscr{X}) + \frac{1}{2}f_k(\partial \mathscr{X}), \] with equality precisely when $k=d$ or when $k=d-1$ and $\mathscr{X}$ is simplicial. We further prove that if $\mathscr{S}$ is a strongly regular CW sphere of dimension $d$, and the face poset of $\mathscr{S}$ is both CL-shellable and dual CL-shellable, then $f_k(\mathscr{S}) \geq \min\{f_0(\mathscr{S}),f_d(\mathscr{S})\}$ for all $0 \leq k \leq d$.

Abstract:In extremal graph theory, the problem of finding the elements of a given class of graphs which contain the most cliques traces its routes back to Turán's famous theorem. We consider the implications of the connectivity property of simplicial complexes known as shellability on clique complexes associated with graphs. In this paper, we find the graphs which maximize cliques among all graphs on $n$ vertices with $\Delta(G)\leq r$ that have shellable clique complexes.

The augmented external activity complex of a matroid

Abstract:For a matroid, we define a new simplicial complex whose facets are indexed by its independent sets. This complex contains the external activity complex as a subcomplex. We call our complex the augmented external activity complex since its definition is motivated by the recently defined augmented tautological classes of matroids. We prove that our complex is shellable and show that our shelling satisfies the stronger property of being an $H$-shelling. This explicates our result that the $h$-vector of our complex is the $f$-vector of the independence complex. We also define an augmented no broken circuit complex, which contains the usual no broken circuit complex as a subcomplex. We prove its shellability and show that our shelling is also an $H$-shelling. The $h$-vector of this complex is the $f$-vector of the no broken circuit complex.

Abstract:In this paper, we are concerned with identifying among the family of posets associated with Kohnert polynomials, those whose order complex has a certain combinatorial property. In particular, for numerous families of Kohnert polynomials, including key polynomials, we determine when the associated Kohnert posets are (EL-)shellable. Interestingly, under certain diagram restrictions, (EL-)shellability of a Kohnert poset is equivalent to multiplcity freeness of the associated Kohnert polynomial.
