Abstract:Since the existing tropical cryptographic protocols are either susceptible to the Kotov-Ushakov attack and its generalization, or to attacks based on tropical matrix periodicity and predictive behavior, several attempts have been made to propose protocols that resist such attacks. Despite these attempts, many of the proposed protocols remain vulnerable to attacks targeting the underlying hidden problems, one of which we call the tropical two-sided discrete logarithm with shift. An illustrative case is the tropical Stickel protocol, which, when formulated with a single monomial instead of a polynomial, becomes susceptible to attacks based on solutions of the above mentioned tropical version of discrete logarithm. In this paper we will formally introduce the tropical two-sided discrete logarithm with shift, discuss how it is solved, and subsequently demonstrate an attack on a key exchange protocol based on the tropical semiring of pairs. This particular protocol is compromised due to the existence of efficient (albeit heuristic) solution of the tropical two-sided logarithm problem, and this highlights the ongoing challenges in search of a "good" key exchange protocol in tropical cryptography.

Abstract:In the quest for robust and efficient digital communication, this paper introduces cutting-edge key exchange protocols leveraging the computational prowess of tropical semirings and the structural resilience of block matrices. Moving away from the conventional use of finite fields, these protocols deliver markedly faster processing speeds and heightened security. We present two implementations of our concept, each utilizing a different platform for the set of commuting matrices: one employing tropical polynomials of matrices and the other employing Linde–de la Puente matrices. The inherent simplicity of tropical semirings leads to a decrease in operational complexity, while using block matrices enhances our protocols' security profile. The security of these protocols relies on the Matrix Decomposition Problem. In addition, we provide a comparative analysis of our protocols against existing matrix block-based protocols in finite fields. This research marks a significant shift in cryptographic protocol design, is specifically tailored for demanding engineering applications, and sets a new standard in secure and efficient digital communication.

Abstract:In recent years, the tropical polynomial factorization problem, the tropical matrix decomposition problem, and the tropical multivariate quadratic equation solving problem have been proved to be NP-hard. Some asymmetric cryptographic systems based on tropical semirings have been proposed, but most of them are insecure and have been successfully attacked. In this paper, a new key exchange protocol and a new encryption protocol are proposed based on the difficulty of finding the multiple exponentiation problem of the tropical Jones matrices. The analysis results indicate that our protocol can resist various existing attacks. The complexity of attacking an MEP by adversaries is raised due to the larger number of combinations in the tropical Jones matrices compared to regular matrix polynomials. Furthermore, the index semiring is the non-negative integer cyclic matrix semiring, leading to a higher efficiency in key generation.

Abstract:We study the geometry of tropical extensions of hyperfields, including the ordinary, signed and complex tropical hyperfields. We introduce the framework of 'enriched valuations' as hyperfield homomorphisms to tropical extensions, and show that a notable family of them are relatively algebraically closed. Our main results are hyperfield analogues of Kapranov's theorem and the Fundamental theorem of tropical geometry. Utilising these theorems, we introduce fine tropical varieties and prove a structure theorem for them in terms of their initial ideals.

Abstract:Patchworking theorems serve as a basic element of the correspondence between tropical and algebraic curves, which is a core of the tropical enumerative geometry. We present a new version of a patchworking theorem which relates plane tropical curves with complex and real algebraic curves having prescribed multiple points. It can be used to compute Welschinger invariants of non-toric Del Pezzo surfaces.

Abstract:Given a tropical cycle $X$, one can talk about a notion of tropical vector bundles on $X$ having real or tropical fibers. By restricting our attention to bounded rational sections of these bundles, one can develop a good notion of characteristic classes that behave as expected classically. We present further results on these characteristic classes and use it to notably prove the analogue of the splitting principle, which allows us to establish the foundations for Porteous' formula in this setting which provides a determinantal expression for the fundamental class of degeneracy loci in terms of Chern classes.

Subsets of groups in public-key cryptography

Abstract:We suggest the usage of algebraic subsets instead of subgroups in public-key cryptography. In particular, we present the subset version of two protocols introduced by Shpilrain and Ushakov with some examples in ascending HNN-extensions of free-abelian groups and discuss their resistance to length and distance based attacks. We also introduce several new group theoretic problems arising from this work.

Abstract:The goal of this paper is to make a connection between tropical geometry, representations of quantum affine algebras, and scattering amplitudes in physics. The connection allows us to study important and difficult questions in these areas: (1) We give a systematic construction of prime modules (including prime non-real modules) of quantum affine algebras using tropical geometry. We also introduce new objects which generalize positive tropical Grassmannians. (2) We propose a generalization of Grassmannian string integrals in physics, in which the integrand is no longer a finite, but rather an infinite product indexed by prime modules of a quantum affine algebra. We give a general formula of $u$-variables using prime tableaux (corresponding to prime modules of quantum affine algebras of type $A$) and Auslander-Reiten quivers of Grassmannian cluster categories. (3) We study limit $g$-vectors of cluster algebras. This is another way to obtain prime non-real modules of quantum affine algebras systematically. Using limit $g$-vectors, we construct new examples of non-real modules of quantum affine algebras.

Tropical vector bundles and matroids

Abstract:We introduce a notion of tropical vector bundle on a tropical toric variety which is a tropical analogue of a torus equivariant vector bundle on a toric variety. Alternatively it can be called a toric matroid bundle. We define equivariant $K$-theory and characteristic classes of these bundles. As a particular case, we show that any matroid comes with tautological tropical toric vector bundles over the permutahedral toric variety and the corresponding equivariant $K$-classes and Chern classes recover the tautological classes of matroids constructed in the recent work of Berger-Eur-Spink-Tseng. In analogy with toric vector bundles, we define sheaf of sections and Euler characteristic as well as positivity notions such as global generation, ampleness and nefness for tropical toric vector bundles. Moreover, we prove a vanishing of higher cohomologies result. Finally, we study the splitting of our tropical toric vector bundles and, in particular, an analogue of Grothendieck's theorem on splitting of vector bundles on projective line.

Abstract:We define vector bundles for tropical schemes, and explore their properties. The paper largely consists of three parts; (1) we study free modules over zero-sum free semirings, which provide the necessary algebraic background for the theory (2) we relate vector bundles on tropical schemes to topological vector bundles and vector bundles on monoid schemes, and finally (3) we show that all line bundles on a tropical scheme can be lifted to line bundles on a usual scheme in the affine case.

Abstract:This article discusses a combinatorial extension of tropical intersection theory to spaces given by glueing quotients of partially open convex polyhedral cones by finitely many automorphisms. This extension is done in terms of linear poic-complexes and poic-fibrations, mainly motivated by the case of the moduli spaces of tropical curves of arbitrary genus and marking. We define tropical cycles of a linear poic-complex and of a poic-fibration, and discuss the pushforward maps in these situations. In the context of moduli spaces of tropical curves, we also discuss "clutching morphisms" and "forgetting the marking" morphisms. In a subsequent article we apply this framework to moduli spaces of discrete admissible covers and study the loci of tropical curves that appear as the source of a degree-$d$ discrete admissible cover of a genus-$h$ $m$-marked tropical curve, for fixed $d$, $h$ and $m$.

Abstract:We explore several facets of tropical subrepresentations of a linear representation of a group over the tropical semifield $\mathbb{T}$. A key role in the study of tropical subrepresentations is played by two types of modules over a semiring: weakly free and quasi-free modules. We also investigate subgroups of $\text{GL}_n(K)$ for $K=\mathbb{T}$, $ \mathbb{R}_{\geq 0}$, and automorphisms of weakly free modules and tropical prevarieties defined by tropical linear equations. As an application of our results, we provide an intrinsic description of tropical subrepresentation via certain quasi-free modules, and prove that a tropical subrepresentation is equivalent to a valuated matroidal representation.

Faithful tropicalization of hyperelliptic curves

Abstract:We provide explicit faithful re-embeddings for all hyperelliptic curves of genus at most three and an algorithmic way to construct them. Both in the faithful tropicalization algorithm and the proofs of correctness, we showcase OSCAR-methods for commutative algebra, polyhedral and tropical geometry.

Abstract:We study tropical friezes and cluster-additive functions associated to symmetrizable generalized Cartan matrices in the framework of Fock-Goncharov duality in cluster algebras. In particular, we generalize and prove a conjecture of C. M. Ringel on cluster-additive functions associated to arbitrary Cartan matrices of finite type. For a Fock-Goncharov dual pair of positive spaces of finite type, we use tropical friezes and cluster-additive functions to explicitly express the Fock-Goncharov pairing between their tropical points and the bijections between global monomials on one and tropical points of the other.

Abstract:The main purpose of this paper is to give an overview over the theory of abelian varieties, with main focus on Jacobian varieties of curves reaching from well-known results till to latest developments and their usage in cryptography. In the first part we provide the necessary mathematical background on abelian varieties, their torsion points, Honda-Tate theory, Galois representations, with emphasis on Jacobian varieties and hyperelliptic Jacobians. In the second part we focus on applications of abelian varieties on cryptography and treating separately, elliptic curve cryptography, genus 2 and 3 cryptography, including Diffie-Hellman Key Exchange, index calculus in Picard groups, isogenies of Jacobians via correspondences and applications to discrete logarithms. Several open problems and new directions are suggested.
