Abstract:In this paper, we use a combination of the SysML/KAOS requirements engineering method, an extension of SysML, with concepts of the KAOS goal model, and of the B System formal method. Translation rules from a SysML/KAOS goal model to a B System specification have been defined. They allow to obtain a skeleton of the B System specification. To complete it, we have defined a language to express the domain model associated to the goal model. The translation of this domain model gives the structural part of the B System specification. The contribution of this paper is the description of translation rules from SysML/KAOS domain models to B System specifications. We also present the formal verification of these rules and we describe an open source tool that implements the languages and the rules. Finally, we provide a review of the application of the SysML/KAOS method on case studies such as for the formal specification of the hybrid ERTMS/ETCS level 3 standard.

Abstract:A means of building safe critical systems consists of formally modeling the requirements formulated by stakeholders and ensuring their consistency with respect to application domain properties. This paper proposes a metamodel for an ontology modeling formalism based on OWL and PLIB. This modeling formalism is part of a method for modeling the domain of systems whose requirements are captured through SysML/KAOS. The formal semantics of SysML/KAOS goals are represented using Event-B specifications. Goals provide the set of events, while domain models will provide the structure of the system state of the Event-B specification. Our proposal is illustrated through a case study dealing with a Cycab localization component specification. The case study deals with the specification of a localization software component that uses GPS,Wi-Fi and sensor technologies for the realtime localization of the Cycab vehicle, an autonomous ground transportation system designed to be robust and completely independent.
MOF compliant fundamentals for multi-domain system modeling and simulation

Abstract:Modern software frameworks for Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) methodologies are proprietary and commonly restricts to a poor choice of domain specific languages. Furthermore, the interoperablity and model interchange support between frameworks is a technically hard challenge. The industrial strength standard OMG MOF (Meta-Object Facility) is a solid approach for the definition of domain specific languages. Applying meta-modeling techniques to existing modeling and simulation frameworks reduces obscurity of proprietarity and implicitely language characteristics. On the other hand, standard compliance improves product openness/transparency, reliability and confidence as for primary modes of operation. This paper presents a methodology to incorporate methods of meta-modeling and standard compliant domain specific languages in an existing modeling and simulation framework. First results are emerged and exemplified for an effective modeling dialect called MML (MLDesigner Modeling Language). Future prospects reviews already accomplished goals in this project, address several alternatives and improvements and gives an overview of ongoing development.

Abstract:In the face of the rapid growth in the scale and complexity of multidisciplinary systems, being able to develop reliable systems under ever-faster changing and more individual market requirements is becoming more and more challenging. The Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) approach has already been researched heavily, and started to be introduced for the management of complexity, maintaining consistency, and reducing development costs and the time-to-market. However, a major drawback of the current MBSE methodologies is the lack of capability to integrate with domain-specific simulation models to investigate design concepts in the early phases of the development process. In order to address this issue, we propose a holistic system modeling approach that allows system engineers to link descriptive system models with domain-specific simulation models. In this paper, the Systems Modeling Language (SysML) is used as the standard architecture modeling language. A system modeling approach in SysML based on the system’s functional architecture for system design and validation is defined. The approach was developed to integrate domain-specific models into the system model using a SysML modeler with the capability of running and reusing simulation tasks via the coupling of external tools, which helps to bridge the existing gap between models on the system level and detail level. The feasibility of the proposed approach will be evaluated based on the case study of a wind turbine (WT) system. The study shows that our approach has the potential to enable the consistent, parameter-based interlinkage of domain-specific models based on always-up-to-date data, and to assist engineers in making design decisions to meet the system requirements accurately and rapidly in different engineering fields.

Abstract:The design of a mechatronic system (MTS) is not a trivial task due to the complexity of the systems. The evaluation of various design scenarios for the given requirements of a specific MTS is also difficult. Currently, model-based systems engineering (MBSE) and the modeling language SysML provide a novel means for the systematic design of MTSs. However, the specific requirements of MTS behavior modeling, i.e., continuous dynamics or even discrete/continuous hybrid behavior modeling, and automatic simulation and evaluation of the behavior models, are not supported by SysML which intends to create descriptive static design models. Therefore, extension should be made for SysML to support detailed hybrid behavior modeling and the transformation between hybrid models in SysML and executable simulation models in certain simulation environment. For this study, a meta-model based method is proposed to integrate the system design and simulation models of MTSs. First, a set of stereotypes is defined to facilitate the designer to explicitly model hybrid dynamic behavior based on SysML. The necessary simulation information is also formalized in SysML to support an analysis of the system dynamic behavior with the aid of simulations. Finally, the SysML-based system dynamic behavior, and the related simulation information are integrated with the platform-specific simulation model through a bidirectional model transformation approach based on a triple graph grammar (TGG), which facilitates the automatic model consistency and traceability between system design and simulation. The proposed method is implemented and illustrated by using an Inverted Pendulum System (IPS).

Abstract:The work presented in this paper is part of a proposed framework as complete and rigorous as possible for the design of complex systems. The methodological framework used is System Engineering, which is a methodological approach to control the design of complex systems. The practices of this approach are transcribed in standards, realized by methods and supported by tools. In our case, the standard EIA-632 was adopted. Specifically, to deal with the dependability of these complex systems and to improve the processes dealing with dependability, we have defined a global approach. This approach incorporates the consideration of dependability in system engineering processes. The work presented in this paper supports and complements the overall approach: it is the proposal of an information model based on the SysML language, allowing the requirements management, including safety requirements

Abstract:Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) is the mainstream methodology for the design of complex mechatronic systems. It emphasizes the application of the system architecture, which highly depends on a formalized modeling language. However, such modeling language is less researched in previous studies. This paper proposes a general modeling language for representing the system architecture, aiming for representing function, physical effect, geometric information and control behavior which the system should satisfy. It facilitates the communication of designers from different technological domains and supports a series of applications such as automatic reasoning, system simulation, etc. The language is illustrated and verified with a practical mechatronic device finally.

Abstract:Recent years have seen a proliferation of languages for describing embedded systems. Some of these languages have emerged from domain-specific frameworks, and some are adaptions or extensions of more general-purpose languages. In this paper, we focus on two widely-used standard languages: the Architecture Analysis and Design Language (AADL) and the Systems Modeling Language (SysML). AADL was born as an avionics-focused domain-specific language and later on has been revised to represent and support a more general category of embedded real-time systems. SysML is an extension of the Unified Modeling Language (UML) intended to support system engineering and modeling. We propose the ExSAM profile that extends SysML by adding AADL concepts to it with the goal of exploiting the key advantages of both languages in a seamless way. More precisely, by using ExSAM and any SysML modeling environment, we will be able to both model system engineering concepts and use AADL analysis tools where needed. We describe the ExSAM profile through several examples and compare it with existing alternatives. We have implemented ExSAM using IBM Rational Rhapsody and evaluated its completeness and usefulness through two case studies.

Abstract:Systems Modeling Language (SysML) has been applied in the past years to a variety of software and systems engineering projects, by hundreds of researchers, engineers, and other systems and software professionals. Thus, it is expected that all this experience has been described in research articles. Therefore, we propose a survey describing what practitioners and researchers think about this modeling language, the actual use of SysML, and how SysML is used in the software and system engineering life cycle. This article describes a survey on SysML, answering questions such as the most used diagrams for each phase of the development of a system, the most common domains, and other data about the participants. The survey was answered by 343 participants from 38 countries, mostly systems engineers, software and systems architects, and researchers. Industry and academia can use our results (i) for assisting researchers and engineers to select appropriate diagrams for each software and systems development phase, (ii) for a better understanding of which industry domains SysML is most commonly applied, (iii) as a reference for identifying which types of systems are modeled with SysML, (iv) for knowing which software tools are most used, and (v) which other modeling languages are most commonly integrated with SysML for software and systems development.

Abstract:In this document, we introduce a system model as a semantic domain for the Unified Modeling Language (UML) [OMG07a, OMG07b]. The system model is supposed to form a possible core and foundation of the UML semantics definition. For that purpose, the definitions in this document are targeted towards UML which means that central concepts of UML have been formalized as theories of the system model. This document is structured as follows: In the rest of Chapter 1, we discuss the general approach and highlight the main decisions. This chapter is important to understand the rest of this document. Chapter 2 contains the definition of the structural part of the system model. Chapters 3 and 4 contain the control and communication related definition definitions which form the basis to describe the state of a system in Chapter 5. Two variants of state transitions systems are introduced to define object behavior in Chapters 6 (event-based) and 7 (timed). Chapter 8 concludes the document. This document is the second version of the system model which is the result of a major effort to define the structure, behavior and interaction of object oriented, possibly distributed systems abstract enough to be of general value, but also in sufficient detail for a semantic foundation of the UML. The first version of the system model can be found in [BCR06, BCR07a, BCR07b].

Abstract:ABSTRACT Computer‐interpretable representations of system structure and behavior are at the center of developing today's complex systems. Systems engineers create and review these representations using graphical modeling languages that capture requirements, designs, and tests (such as the Systems Modeling Language, SysML). However, these languages must be used in conjunction with analysis tools, in particular, with simulators for physical interaction and numeric signal flow based on ordinary and algebraic differential equation solvers. These kind of simulation tools are often used separately from system modeling tools, leading to inconsistencies that require additional work to eliminate, preventing multidisciplinary concerns from being reflected in the overall system design. As a result, there is an increasing need for integrating physical interaction and signal flow simulation tools and languages into system modeling under a single framework. In this article, we first present an abstraction of the constructs and semantics these simulation tools and languages have in common, based on earlier reviews. Then, we compare SysML to our simulation abstraction to find the parts of SysML closest to simulation modeling, and to identify simulation concepts missing from SysML. This leads to extensions of SysML to bridge the gaps, illustrated with an example application. Next, we address issues in translating extended SysML models to common simulation tools and languages, including the differences between them. Finally, we validate the approach by applying the extension to an example SysML model, automating the translations in software, and showing that the results execute the same way on different simulation platforms.

Abstract:Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) is a popular system engineering development method focusing on digital models as the primary mean of information exchange to improve communication across disciplines. To implement MBSE, the system model needs to be created to represent systems at different layers of abstraction, such as requirements, functional architectures, and solution designs throughout the development phase. Although many studies have mentioned the need to pay attention to the traceability between different layers of system models, there is still a lack of an automated system modeling process. This can lead to inefficiencies and even errors during the system modeling process. A semi-automated system modeling process based on Systems Modeling Language (SysML) is presented to overcome the issue. This work elaborates on a formalised modeling mechanism based on SysML elements to aid system engineers in system modeling with a function-oriented architecture. This work demonstrates and evaluates the proposed process by developing a wind turbine (WT) system model. The contribution of this study is that it realizes the semi-automatic top-down system modeling process. This ensures data inheritance and consistency between different system model layers of abstraction. It also reduces manual efforts and improves the efficiency of the system modeling process.

Abstract:Abstract The INCOSE Systems Engineering Competency Framework (SECF) and INCOSE Systems Engineering Competency Assessment Guide (SECAG), published in 2018 and 2023 respectively, provide a requirement definition for 37 systems engineering competencies each with knowledge, skill, ability, and behavior (KSAB) indicators across 5 different proficiency levels along with sample evidence against each of these indicator requirements. These publications form a static representation of the framework structure and associated database. This paper describes the development of a Systems Modeling Language (SysML) model that provides a digital representation of the architecture framework and associated requirement and evidence entry databases. A description of the metamodel and data structure is presented as well as a tailoring approaches for use and a series of evolving model use cases.

Abstract:Abstract A critical enabler for Model‐Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) and Digital Engineering (DE) is the generation of coherent and consistent views of a system‐of‐interest based on information within a system model. In practice, system model development is facilitated through domain‐specific profiles, style guides, reference models, and low‐fidelity meta‐models to create coherent and consistent system information. Each of these approaches are useful but are insufficient for robust and automated verification of system models to an ideal. Furthermore, the expression of domain‐specific concepts and semantics relies on the proliferation of non‐standard, domain‐specific profiles as standard system modeling languages like the Systems Modeling Language (SysML) are general purpose. This paper proposes a novel approach to creating precise, machine‐interpretable metamodels implemented as a lightweight Unified Modeling Language (UML) profile. The profile includes numerous features that allow model architects to quickly specify context and domain‐specific modeling constructs without creating non‐standard stereotypes to apply domain‐specific meaning and usage rules. Three kinds of constraints can be inferred based on the relationships between meta‐model elements: type, multiplicity, and default value. Applications of well‐formed metamodels include a shared understanding of the intended model format and structure, as well as the one‐time programmatic generation of an encompassing suite of validation rules to evaluate a system model against the inferred constraints, thus ensuring consistency. Additional applications include programmatic generation of model analysis metrics, system models from metamodels, metamodels from reference models and element finding queries, and the ability to update a system model based upon the updated metamodel automatically. Use of the approach results in reduced time in system model development and analysis and ensures coherency and consistency of information thus increasing stakeholder use and confidence in the system model.

Abstract:Different communities have developed plenty of design notations for software engineering in support of practical (via UML) and rigorous (via formal methods) approaches. Hence the problem of bridging these notations rises. Model-driven engineering (MDE) is a new paradigm in software engineering, which treats models and model transformations as first class citizens. Furthermore, it is seen as a promising method for bridging heterogeneous platforms. In this paper, we provide an MDE-based approach to build bridges between informal, semi-formal and formal notations: Firstly, different notations are viewed as different domain specification languages (DSLs) and introduced into MDE, especially into the ATLAS Model Management Architecture (AMMA) platform, by metamodeling. Then, ATL transformation rules are built for semantics mapping. At last, TCS-based model-to-text syntax rules are developed, allowing one to map models to programs. Consequently, different design notations in both graphical style and grammatical style are bridged. A case study of bridging OMG SysML™ to LOTOS is also illustrated showing the validity and practicability of our approach.

Abstract:Model-based systems engineering (MBSE) is becoming a promising solution for the design of mechatronic systems with the increasing of complexity. To facilitate system design engineers to express their various behavioral requirements, a uniform behavior modeling approach is proposed based on SysML. A set of new constructs are proposed which compose the uniform behavior modeling profile. Based on the profile, the hybrid behavior of the mechatronic system can be uniformly represented in a multi-view and hierarchical way. Moreover, the language- and tool-dependent simulation related information is also described based on SysML as the complement part of the uniform behavior model, which can be transformed to different simulation platforms based on the triple graph grammar (TGG). In this way, the system-level design of the mechatronic system is simulated and verified automatically in the early design stage. Finally, the method is implemented and an example is given to illustrate the whole process.

Abstract:Properties and environmental dependencies of mechatronic components like gear-drives and motors impact the overall performance of automated Production Systems. These properties, often in the form of characteristic curves, are only accessible from suppliers' documents, like operating instructions or online catalogs. The proposed SysML' profile integrates artifacts from SysML and UML into disciplinary views. It includes a reference mechanism to REXS (standard for gear properties) and ECLASS (standard for product data like UNSPSC) to overcome the semantic inconsistency of component properties and inclusion of curves. A metamodel is used for a more precise presentation of the proposed reference mechanism. Due to the static nature of a profile, a Business Process Modeling Notation is used to dynamically illustrate the benefits of SysML' in the workflow.

A MDE Based Approach for Bridging Formal Models

Abstract:Different formal methods have presented plenty of formal models for system specification and proof. Hence the problem of bridging these formal models rises. MDE is a new paradigm in software engineering, which implements software by (meta-)modeling and model transforming. In this paper, we provide a MDE based approach for bridging heterogeneous formal models: Firstly, the heterogeneous formal models are introduced into MDE as domain specific languages by metamodeling. Then, transformation rules are built for semantics mapping. At last, model-text syntax rules are developed, so as to map models to programs. Our approach could be applied on formal models in both graphical style and grammatical style. A case study of bridging MARTE to LOTOS is also illustrated showing the validity and practicability of our approach.

Abstract:Aimming to build the association among different levels of design information and simulation information of different physical domains of the complex mechatronic products,a SysML-based framework of an integration of hierarchical design and simulation information was proposed for supporting the model-driven design of multi-domain complex mechatronic systems.An integration information model was established based on the extension mechanism of stereotype of SysML.After that,the meta-models of SysML and Simscape,a typical simulation modeling language,were explored and the mapping rules between them were also studied.The integration method between the system-level design and simulation information was proposed based on triangular graph grammar(TGG).At last,some examples were shown to illustrate the proposed method and some discussion was also given.
Simulating hybrid SysML models: a model transformation approach under the DEVS framework

Abstract:As the complexity of the cyber-physical systems (CPSs) increase, system modeling and simulation tend to be performed on different platforms where collaborative modeling activities are performed on distributed clients, while the simulations of systems are carried out in specific simulation environments, such as high-performance computing (HPC). However, there is a great gap between system models usually designed in system modeling language (SysML) and simulation code, and the existing model transformation-based simulation methods and tools mainly focus on either discrete or continuous models, ignoring the fact that the simulation of hybrid models is quite important in designing complex systems. To this end, a model transformation approach is proposed to simulate hybrid SysML models under a discrete event system specification (DEVS) framework. In this approach, to depict hybrid models, simulation-related meta-models with discrete and continuous features are extracted from SysML views without additional extension. Following the meta object facility (MOF), DEVS meta-models are constructed based on the formal definition of DEVS models, including discrete, hybrid and coupled models. Moreover, a series of concrete mapping rules is defined to transform the discrete and continuous behaviors based on the existing state machine mechanism and constraints of SysML, separately. Such an approach may facilitate a SysML system engineer to use a DEVS-based simulator to validate system models without the necessity of understanding DEVS theory. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by a defense system case.
