Abstract:These are the proceedings of the Second International Workshop on Safe Control of Autonomous Vehicles, which took place on the 10th of April 2018 in Porto, Portugal as an affiliated workshop of CSPWeek. The task of this workshop is to identify open research problems, discuss recent achievements, bring together researchers in, e.g., control theory, adaptive systems, machine self-organization and autonomy, mobile intelligent robotics, transportation, traffic control, machine learning, software verification, and dependability and security engineering.

Abstract:The International Workshop for Autonomous System Safety (IWASS) is a joint effort by the B. John Garrick Institute for the Risk Sciences at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA-GIRS) and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). IWASS is an invitation-only event designed to be a platform for cross-industrial and interdisciplinary effort and knowledge exchange on autonomous systems' Safety, Reliability, and Security (SRS). The workshop gathers experts from academia, regulatory agencies, and industry to discuss challenges and potential solutions for SRS of autonomous systems from different perspectives. It complements existing events organized around specific types of autonomous systems (e.g., cars, ships, aviation) or particular safety or security-related aspects of such systems (e.g., cyber risk, software reliability, etc.). IWASS distinguishes itself from these events by addressing these topics together and proposing solutions for SRS challenges common to different types of autonomous systems. IWASS 2022 was held on August 28th in Dublin, Ireland, and gathered 30 participants from 20 organizations from around the globe. In addition, a panel session at the European Safety and Reliability Conference (ESREL 2023) discussed the workshop's main conclusions and additional points with a larger audience. This report summarizes IWASS 2022 discussions. It provides an overview of the main points raised by a community of experts on the current status of autonomous systems SRS. It also outlines research directions for safer, more reliable and secure future autonomous systems.

Abstract:Research on automated vehicles has experienced an explosive growth over the past decade. A main obstacle to their practical realization, however, is a convincing safety concept. This question becomes ever more important as more sophisticated algorithms are used and the vehicle automation level increases. The field of functional safety offers a systematic approach to identify possible sources of risk and to improve the safety of a vehicle. It is based on practical experience across the aerospace, process and other industries over multiple decades. This experience is compiled in the functional safety standard for the automotive domain, ISO 26262, which is widely adopted throughout the automotive industry. However, its applicability and relevance for highly automated vehicles is subject to a controversial debate. This paper takes a critical look at the discussion and summarizes the main steps of ISO 26262 for a safe control design for automated vehicles.

Abstract:The Shared Control (SC) cooperation scheme, where the driver and automated driving system control the vehicle together, has been gaining attention through the years as a promising option to improve road safety. As a result, advanced interaction methods can be investigated to enhance user experience, acceptance, and trust. Under this perspective, not only the development of algorithms and system applications are needed, but it is also essential to evaluate the system with real drivers, assess its impact on road safety, and understand how drivers accept and are willing to use this technology. In this sense, the contribution of this work is to conduct an experimental study to evaluate if a previously developed shared control system can improve overtaking performance on roads with oncoming traffic. The evaluation is performed in a Driver-in-the-Loop (DiL) simulator with 13 real drivers. The system based on SC is compared against a vehicle with conventional SAE-L2 functionalities. The evaluation includes both objective and subjective assessments. Results show that SC proved to be the best solution for assisting the driver during overtaking in terms of safety and acceptance. The SC's longer and smoother control transitions provide benefits to cooperative driving. The System Usability Scale (SUS) and the System Acceptance Scale (SAS) questionnaire show that the SC system was perceived as better in terms of usability, usefulness, and satisfaction.
A Safe Control Architecture Based on a Model Predictive Control Supervisor for Autonomous Driving

Abstract:This paper presents a novel, safe control architecture (SCA) for controlling an important class of systems: safety-critical systems. Ensuring the safety of control decisions has always been a challenge in automatic control. The proposed SCA aims to address this challenge by using a Model Predictive Controller (MPC) that acts as a supervisor for the operating controller, in the sense that the MPC constantly checks the safety of the control inputs generated by the operating controller and intervenes if the control input is predicted to lead to a hazardous situation in the foreseeable future invariably. Then an appropriate backup scheme can be activated, e.g., a degraded control mechanism, the transfer of the system to a safe state, or a warning signal issued to a human supervisor. For a proof of concept, the proposed SCA is applied to an autonomous driving scenario, where it is illustrated and compared in different obstacle avoidance scenarios. A major challenge of the SCA lies in the mismatch between the MPC prediction model and the real system, for which possible remedies are explored.
Secure Control of Connected and Automated Vehicles Using Trust-Aware Robust Event-Triggered Control Barrier Functions

Abstract:We address the security of a network of Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAVs) cooperating to safely navigate through a conflict area (e.g., traffic intersections, merging roadways, roundabouts). Previous studies have shown that such a network can be targeted by adversarial attacks causing traffic jams or safety violations ending in collisions. We focus on attacks targeting the V2X communication network used to share vehicle data and consider as well uncertainties due to noise in sensor measurements and communication channels. To combat these, motivated by recent work on the safe control of CAVs, we propose a trust-aware robust event-triggered decentralized control and coordination framework that can provably guarantee safety. We maintain a trust metric for each vehicle in the network computed based on their behavior and used to balance the tradeoff between conservativeness (when deeming every vehicle as untrustworthy) and guaranteed safety and security. It is important to highlight that our framework is invariant to the specific choice of the trust framework. Based on this framework, we propose an attack detection and mitigation scheme which has twofold benefits: (i) the trust framework is immune to false positives, and (ii) it provably guarantees safety against false positive cases. We use extensive simulations (in SUMO and CARLA) to validate the theoretical guarantees and demonstrate the efficacy of our proposed scheme to detect and mitigate adversarial attacks.

Abstract:The 2nd Workshop on Maritime Computer Vision (MaCVi) 2024 addresses maritime computer vision for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) and Unmanned Surface Vehicles (USV). Three challenges categories are considered: (i) UAV-based Maritime Object Tracking with Re-identification, (ii) USV-based Maritime Obstacle Segmentation and Detection, (iii) USV-based Maritime Boat Tracking. The USV-based Maritime Obstacle Segmentation and Detection features three sub-challenges, including a new embedded challenge addressing efficicent inference on real-world embedded devices. This report offers a comprehensive overview of the findings from the challenges. We provide both statistical and qualitative analyses, evaluating trends from over 195 submissions. All datasets, evaluation code, and the leaderboard are available to the public at https://macvi.org/workshop/macvi24.

Abstract:This report presents the debates, posters, and discussions of the Sim2Real workshop held in conjunction with the 2020 edition of the "Robotics: Science and System" conference. Twelve leaders of the field took competing debate positions on the definition, viability, and importance of transferring skills from simulation to the real world in the context of robotics problems. The debaters also joined a large panel discussion, answering audience questions and outlining the future of Sim2Real in robotics. Furthermore, we invited extended abstracts to this workshop which are summarized in this report. Based on the workshop, this report concludes with directions for practitioners exploiting this technology and for researchers further exploring open problems in this area.

Abstract:The challenge of establishing assurance in autonomy is rapidly attracting increasing interest in the industry, government, and academia. Autonomy is a broad and expansive capability that enables systems to behave without direct control by a human operator. To that end, it is expected to be present in a wide variety of systems and applications. A vast range of industrial sectors, including (but by no means limited to) defense, mobility, health care, manufacturing, and civilian infrastructure, are embracing the opportunities in autonomy yet face the similar barriers toward establishing the necessary level of assurance sooner or later. Numerous government agencies are poised to tackle the challenges in assured autonomy. Given the already immense interest and investment in autonomy, a series of workshops on Assured Autonomy was convened to facilitate dialogs and increase awareness among the stakeholders in the academia, industry, and government. This series of three workshops aimed to help create a unified understanding of the goals for assured autonomy, the research trends and needs, and a strategy that will facilitate sustained progress in autonomy. The first workshop, held in October 2019, focused on current and anticipated challenges and problems in assuring autonomous systems within and across applications and sectors. The second workshop held in February 2020, focused on existing capabilities, current research, and research trends that could address the challenges and problems identified in workshop. The third event was dedicated to a discussion of a draft of the major findings from the previous two workshops and the recommendations.

Abstract:As the complexity of autonomous vehicles (AVs) continues to increase and artificial intelligence algorithms are becoming increasingly ubiquitous, a novel safety concern known as the safety of the intended functionality (SOTIF) has emerged, presenting significant challenges to the widespread deployment of AVs. SOTIF focuses on issues arising from the functional insufficiencies of the AVs' intended functionality or its implementation, apart from conventional safety considerations. From the systems engineering standpoint, this study offers a comprehensive exploration of the SOTIF landscape by reviewing academic research, practical activities, challenges, and perspectives across the development, verification, validation, and operation phases. Academic research encompasses system-level SOTIF studies and algorithm-related SOTIF issues and solutions. Moreover, it encapsulates practical SOTIF activities undertaken by corporations, government entities, and academic institutions spanning international and Chinese contexts, focusing on the overarching methodologies and practices in different phases. Finally, the paper presents future challenges and outlook pertaining to the development, verification, validation, and operation phases, motivating stakeholders to address the remaining obstacles and challenges.

Abstract:Ensuring the safety of fully autonomous vehicles requires a multi-disciplinary approach across all the levels of functional hierarchy, from hardware fault tolerance, to resilient machine learning, to cooperating with humans driving conventional vehicles, to validating systems for operation in highly unstructured environments, to appropriate regulatory approaches. Significant open technical challenges include validating inductive learning in the face of novel environmental inputs and achieving the very high levels of dependability required for full-scale fleet deployment. However, the biggest challenge may be in creating an end-to-end design and deployment process that integrates the safety concerns of a myriad of technical specialties into a unified approach.

Redefining Safety for Autonomous Vehicles

Abstract:Existing definitions and associated conceptual frameworks for computer-based system safety should be revisited in light of real-world experiences from deploying autonomous vehicles. Current terminology used by industry safety standards emphasizes mitigation of risk from specifically identified hazards, and carries assumptions based on human-supervised vehicle operation. Operation without a human driver dramatically increases the scope of safety concerns, especially due to operation in an open world environment, a requirement to self-enforce operational limits, participation in an ad hoc sociotechnical system of systems, and a requirement to conform to both legal and ethical constraints. Existing standards and terminology only partially address these new challenges. We propose updated definitions for core system safety concepts that encompass these additional considerations as a starting point for evolving safe-ty approaches to address these additional safety challenges. These results might additionally inform framing safety terminology for other autonomous system applications.

Ensuring Safe Autonomy: Navigating the Future of Autonomous Vehicles

Abstract:Autonomous driving vehicles provide a vast potential for realizing use cases in the on-road and off-road domains. Consequently, remarkable solutions exist to autonomous systems' environmental perception and control. Nevertheless, proof of safety remains an open challenge preventing such machinery from being introduced to markets and deployed in real world. Traditional approaches for safety assurance of autonomously driving vehicles often lead to underperformance due to conservative safety assumptions that cannot handle the overall complexity. Besides, the more sophisticated safety systems rely on the vehicle's perception systems. However, perception is often unreliable due to uncertainties resulting from disturbances or the lack of context incorporation for data interpretation. Accordingly, this paper illustrates the potential of a modular, self-adaptive autonomy framework with integrated dynamic risk management to overcome the abovementioned drawbacks.

Abstract:The technology in the area of automated vehicles is gaining speed and promises many advantages. However, with the recent introduction of conditionally automated driving, we have also seen accidents. Test protocols for both, conditionally automated (e.g., on highways) and automated vehicles do not exist yet and leave researchers and practitioners with different challenges. For instance, current test procedures do not suffice for fully automated vehicles, which are supposed to be completely in charge for the driving task and have no driver as a back up. This paper presents current challenges of testing the functionality and safety of automated vehicles derived from conducting focus groups and interviews with 26 participants from five countries having a background related to testing automotive safety-related <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://topics.We" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> provide an overview of the state-of-practice of testing active safety features as well as challenges that needs to be addressed in the future to ensure safety for automated vehicles. The major challenges identified through the interviews and focus groups, enriched by literature on this topic are related to 1) virtual testing and simulation, 2) safety, reliability, and quality, 3) sensors and sensor models, 4) required scenario complexity and amount of test cases, and 5) handover of responsibility between the driver and the vehicle.

Abstract:Autonomous vehicles (AVs), defined as vehicles capable of navigation and decision-making independent of human intervention, represent a revolutionary advancement in transportation technology. These vehicles operate by synthesizing an array of sophisticated technologies, including sensors, cameras, GPS, radar, light imaging detection and ranging (LiDAR), and advanced computing systems. These components work in concert to accurately perceive the vehicle’s environment, ensuring the capacity to make optimal decisions in real-time. At the heart of AV functionality lies the ability to facilitate intercommunication between vehicles and with critical road infrastructure—a characteristic that, while central to their efficacy, also renders them susceptible to cyber threats. The potential infiltration of these communication channels poses a severe threat, enabling the possibility of personal information theft or the introduction of malicious software that could compromise vehicle safety. This paper offers a comprehensive exploration of the current state of AV technology, particularly examining the intersection of autonomous vehicles and emotional intelligence. We delve into an extensive analysis of recent research on safety lapses and security vulnerabilities in autonomous vehicles, placing specific emphasis on the different types of cyber attacks to which they are susceptible. Abstract:Software systems are increasingly used in application domains characterised by uncertain environments, evolving requirements and unexpected failures; sudden system malfunctioning raises serious issues of security, safety, loss of comfort or revenue. During operation, these systems will likely need to deal with several unpredictable situations including variations in system performance, sudden changes in system workload and component failures. These situations can cause deviation from the desired system behaviour and require dynamic adaptation of the system behaviour, parameters or architecture. Through using closed-loop control, typically realized with software, intelligent and autonomous software systems can dynamically adapt themselves, without any or with limited human involvement, by identifying abnormal situations, analysing alternative adaptation options, and finally, self-adapting to a suitable new configuration. This report summarises the research carried out during SEfIAS GI Dagstuhl seminar which provided a forum for strengthening interaction and collaboration for early-career researchers and practitioners from the research communities of SEAMS, ICAC/ICCAC, SASO, Self-Aware Computing and AAMAS.
Challenges of engineering safe and secure highly automated vehicles

Abstract:After more than a decade of intense focus on automated vehicles, we are still facing huge challenges for the vision of fully autonomous driving to become a reality. The same "disillusionment" is true in many other domains, in which autonomous Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) could considerably help to overcome societal challenges and be highly beneficial to society and individuals. Taking the automotive domain, i.e. highly automated vehicles (HAV), as an example, this paper sets out to summarize the major challenges that are still to overcome for achieving safe, secure, reliable and trustworthy highly automated resp. autonomous CPS. We constrain ourselves to technical challenges, acknowledging the importance of (legal) regulations, certification, standardization, ethics, and societal acceptance, to name but a few, without delving deeper into them as this is beyond the scope of this paper. Four challenges have been identified as being the main obstacles to realizing HAV: Realization of continuous, post-deployment systems improvement, handling of uncertainties and incomplete information, verification of HAV with machine learning components, and prediction. Each of these challenges is described in detail, including sub-challenges and, where appropriate, possible approaches to overcome them. By working together in a common effort between industry and academy and focusing on these challenges, the authors hope to contribute to overcome the "disillusionment" for realizing HAV.
