Abstract:This paper studies NET map slope functions. It establishes Lipschitz-type conditions for them. It relates Lipschitz-type conditions to the half-space theorem. It gives bounds on the number of slope function fixed points. It provides examples of rational NET maps with many matings.

Abstract:A Thurston map is called nearly Euclidean if its local degree at each critical point is 2 and it has exactly four postcritical points. Nearly Euclidean Thurston (NET) maps are simple generalizations of rational Lattes maps. We investigate when such a map has the property that the associated pullback map on Teichmuller space is constant. We also show that no Thurston map of degree 2 has constant pullback map

Abstract:In this paper, we study the dynamics of Newton maps for arbitrary polynomials. Let $p$ be an arbitrary polynomial with at least three distinct roots, and $f$ be its Newton map. It is shown that the boundary $\partial B$ of any immediate root basin $B$ of $f$ is locally connected. Moreover, $\partial B$ is a Jordan curve if and only if ${\rm deg}(f|_B)=2$. This implies that the boundaries of all components of root basins, for all polynomials' Newton maps, from the viewpoint of topology, are tame.

Abstract:We investigate the common underlying discrete structures for various smooth and discrete nets. The main idea is to impose the characteristic properties of the nets not only on elementary quadrilaterals but also on larger parameter rectangles. For discrete planar quadrilateral nets, circular nets, $Q^*$-nets and conical nets we obtain a characterization of the corresponding discrete multi-nets. In the limit these discrete nets lead to some classical classes of smooth surfaces. Furthermore, we propose to use the characterized discrete nets as discrete extensions for the nets to obtain structure preserving subdivision schemes.

Characterizing slopes for satellite knots

Abstract:A slope $p/q$ is said to be characterizing for a knot $K$ if the homeomorphism type of the $p/q$-Dehn surgery along $K$ determines the knot up to isotopy. Extending previous work of Lackenby and McCoy on hyperbolic and torus knots respectively, we study satellite knots to show that for a knot $K$, any slope $p/q$ is characterizing provided $|q|$ is sufficiently large. In particular, we establish that every non-integral slope is characterizing for a composite knot. Our approach consists of a detailed examination of the JSJ decomposition of a surgery along a knot, combined with results from other authors giving constraints on surgery slopes that yield manifolds containing certain surfaces.

Isothermic nets with spherical parameter lines from discrete holomorphic maps

Abstract:We prove that all discrete isothermic nets with a family of planar or spherical lines of curvature can be obtained from special discrete holomorphic maps via lifted-folding. This novel approach is a generalization and discretization of a classical method to create planar curvature lines on smooth surfaces. In particular, this technique provides an efficient way to construct discrete isothermic topological tori composed of fundamental pieces from discrete periodic holomorphic maps.

Abstract:Given a compact interval $[a,b] \subset [0,\pi]$, we construct a parabolic self-map of the upper half-plane whose set of slopes is $[a,b]$. The nature of this construction is completely discrete and explicit: we explicitly construct a self-map and we explicitly show in which way its orbits wander towards the Denjoy-Wolff point. We also analyze some properties of the Herglotz measure corresponding to such example, which yield the regularity of such self-map in its Denjoy-Wolff point.

Abstract:Conjugate line parametrizations of surfaces were first discretized almost a century ago as quad meshes with planar faces. With the recent development of discrete differential geometry, two discretizations of principal curvature line parametrizations were discovered: circular nets and conical nets, both of which are special cases of discrete conjugate nets. Subsequently, circular and conical nets were given a unified description as isotropic line congruences in the Lie quadric. We propose a generalization by considering polar pairs of line congruences in the ambient space of the Lie quadric. These correspond to pairs of discrete conjugate nets with orthogonal edges, which we call principal binets, a new and more general discretization of principal curvature line parametrizations. We also introduce two new discretizations of orthogonal and Gauss-orthogonal parametrizations. All our discretizations are subject to the transformation group principle, which means that they satisfy the corresponding Lie, Möbius, or Laguerre invariance respectively, in analogy to the smooth theory. Finally, we show that they satisfy the consistency principle, which means that our definitions generalize to higher dimensional square lattices. Our work expands on recent work by Dellinger on checkerboard patterns.

Abstract:The delineation of two‐dimensional ascending and descending manifolds represents the theoretical basis for a large number of applications in which functions fx,y are used to describe phenomena related to climate, economy, or engineering, to mention only a few. Whereas the applications are related to the pits, passes, peaks, courses, ridges, basins, and hills, of mathematical interest are the corresponding critical points, separatrices as well as two‐dimensional ascending and descending manifolds. The present article demonstrates how the boundaries of the latter, which represent the pre‐images of basins and hills, can be characterized in a graph‐theoretic way. An algorithm for their extraction, which is based on a newly proved theorem, is presented together with its implementation in C#. Finally, the modus operandi of the algorithm is illustrated by two examples, thereby demonstrating how it works even in the case of surfaces with topologically complicated structures.

Algebraic genericity of certain families of nets in Functional Analysis

Abstract:In Functional Analysis, certain conclusions apply to sequences, but they cannot be carried over when we consider nets. In fact, some nets, including sequences, can behave unexpectedly. In this paper we are interested in exploring the prevalence of these unusual nets in terms of linearity. Each problem is approached with different methods, which have their own interest. As our results are presented in the contexts of topological vector spaces and normed spaces, they generalize or improve a few ones in the literature. We study lineability properties of families of (1) nets that are weakly convergent and unbounded, (2) nets that fail the Banach-Steinhaus theorem, (3) nets indexed by a regular cardinal $\kappa$ that are weakly dense and norm-unbounded, and finally (4) convergent series which have associated nets that are divergent.

Abstract:The focus is on circular nets with one or two families of spherical parameter lines, which are treated in Möbius geometry. These circular nets provide a discretisation of surfaces with one or two families of spherical curvature lines. The special cases of planar, circular and linear parameter lines are also investigated. A Lie-geometric discretisation in terms of principal contact element nets is also presented. Its properties are analogous to the classical properties of surfaces with one or two families of spherical curvature lines. Circular nets with two families of spherical parameter lines have geometric properties that are related to Darboux cyclides. Circular nets with one or two families of spherical parameter lines are examples of Q-nets with terminating Laplace sequences. More generally, this article considers Q-nets that are inscribed in quadrics and that have terminating Laplace sequences.

Effective bounds on characterising slopes for all knots

Abstract:A slope $p/q$ is characterising for a knot $K \subset \mathbb{S}^3$ if the orientation-preserving homeomorphism type of the manifold $\mathbb{S}^3_K(p/q)$ obtained by performing Dehn surgery of slope $p/q$ along $K$ uniquely determines the knot $K$. We combine new applications of results from hyperbolic geometry with previous individual work of the authors to determine, for any given knot $K$, an explicit bound $\mathcal{C}(K)$ such that $|q| > \mathcal{C}(K)$ implies that $p/q$ is a characterising slope for $K$.

Extending bilipschitz mappings between separated nets

Abstract:We prove that every $L$-bilipschitz mapping $\mathbb{Z}^2\to\mathbb{R}^2$ can be extended to a $C(L)$-bilipschitz mapping $\mathbb{R}^2\to\mathbb{R}^2$ and provide an upper bound for $C(L)$. Moreover, we extend the result to every separated net in $\mathbb{R}^2$ instead of $\mathbb{Z}^2$. Along the way, we develop a set of tools for bilipschitz extensions of mappings between subsets of Euclidean spaces.

Abstract:We generalize bounds of Liu-Wan-Xiao for slopes in eigencurves for definite unitary groups of rank $2$ to slopes in eigenvarieties for definite unitary groups of any rank. We show that for a definite unitary group of rank $n$, the Newton polygon of the characteristic power series of the $U_p$ Hecke operator has exact growth rate $x^{1+\frac2{n(n-1)}}$, times a constant proportional to the distance of the weight from the boundary of weight space. The proof goes through the classification of forms associated to principal series representations. We also give a consequence for the geometry of these eigenvarieties over the boundary of weight space.

Half-Wave Maps: Explicit Formulas for Rational Functions with Simple Poles

Abstract:We establish an explicit formula for the Half-Wave maps equation for rational functions with simple poles. The Lax pair provides a description of the evolution of the poles. By considering a half-spin formulation, we use linear algebra to derive a time evolution equation followed by the half-spins, in the moving frame provided by the Lax pair. We then rewrite this formula using a Toeplitz operator and $G$, the adjoint of the operator of multiplication by $x$ on the Hardy space $L_+^2(\mathbb{R})$.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with realizing Lattes maps as subdivision maps of finite subdivision rules. The main result is that the Lattes maps in all but finitely many analytic conjugacy classes can be realized as subdivision maps of finite subdivision rules with one tile type. An example is given of a Lattes map which is not the subdivision map of a finite subdivision rule with either i) two tile types and 1-skeleton of the subdivision complex a circle or ii) one tile type.

Sup-slopes and sub-solutions for fully nonlinear elliptic equations

Abstract:We establish a necessary and sufficient condition for solving a general class of fully nonlinear elliptic equations on closed Riemannian or hermitian manifolds, including both hessian and hessian quotient equations. It settles an open problem of Li and Urbas. Such a condition is based on an analytic slope invariant analogous to the slope stability and the Nakai-Moishezon criterion in complex geometry. As an application, we solve the non-constant $J$-equation on both hermitian manifolds and singular Kähler spaces.

Abstract:We fix a monic polynomial f ¯ ( x ) ∈ F q [ x ] \bar f(x) \in \mathbb {F}_q[x] over a finite field of characteristic p p of degree relatively prime to p p , and consider the Z p ℓ \mathbb {Z}_{p^{\ell }} -Artin–Schreier–Witt tower defined by f ¯ ( x ) \bar f(x) ; this is a tower of curves ⋯ → C m → C m − 1 → ⋯ → C 0 = A 1 \cdots \to C_m \to C_{m-1} \to \cdots \to C_0 =\mathbb {A}^1 , whose Galois group is canonically isomorphic to Z p ℓ \mathbb {Z}_{p^\ell } , the degree ℓ \ell unramified extension of Z p \mathbb {Z}_p , which is abstractly isomorphic to ( Z p ) ℓ (\mathbb {Z}_p)^\ell as a topological group. We study the Newton slopes of zeta functions of this tower of curves. This reduces to the study of the Newton slopes of L L -functions associated to characters of the Galois group of this tower. We prove that, when the conductor of the character is large enough, the Newton slopes of the L L -function asymptotically form a finite union of arithmetic progressions. As a corollary, we prove the spectral halo property of the spectral variety associated to the Z p ℓ \mathbb {Z}_{p^{\ell }} -Artin–Schreier–Witt tower (over a large subdomain of the weight space). This extends the main result in a 2016 work of Davis, Wan, and Xiao from rank one case ℓ = 1 \ell =1 to the higher rank case ℓ ≥ 1 \ell \geq 1 .

Abstract:In our work, we provide a constructive proof of a generalized version of Cantor's diagonal argument for nets. This result expands the well-known technique beyond sequences, allowing it to be applied to a broader context. This result has significant potential applications in various fields, and we demonstrate a few of these in our work. One such application is the solution to a previously open problem posed by Kandić, Marabeh, and Troitsky. Specifically, we show that the set of unbounded norm compact operators from a Banach space to a Banach lattice is closed.

Generalized pentagram maps via Q-nets and refactorization mappings

Abstract:We introduce a family of generalizations of the pentagram maps related to $Q$-nets. A specific example is considered, and we find the map can be treated as a refactorization mapping in the Poisson-Lie group of pseudo-difference operators. This method was firstly proposed by Izosimov, and we generalize it to fit our needs. Using this description, we obtain the corresponding Lax form with a spectral parameter and invariant Poisson brackets. Finally, we consider the reduction to $B$-nets and the discrete BKP equation, offering a geometric explanation for the discrete-time Toda equation of BKP type proposed by Hirota.
