Abstract:In this paper, we first obtain a Bernstein type of concentration inequality for stochastic integrals of multivariate point processes under some conditions through the Doléans-Dade exponential formula, and then derive a uniform exponential inequality using a generic chaining argument. As a direct consequence, we obtain an upper bound for a sequence of discrete time martingales indexed by a class of functionals. Finally, we apply the uniform exponential bound to nonparametric maximum likelihood estimators and provide a rate of convergence in terms of Hellinger distance, which is an improvement of earlier work of van de Geer (1995).

Abstract:The symmetric birth and death stochastic process on the non-negative integers x ∈ Z + with polynomial rates x α , α ∈ [1, 2], x 6= 0, is studied. The process moves slowly and spends more time in the neighborhood of the state 0. We prove the convergence of the scaled process to a solution of stochastic differential equation without drift. Sticking phenomenon appears at the limiting process: trajectories, starting from any state, take finite time to reach 0 and remain there indefinitely.

Abstract:We finely describe the speed of "coming down from infinity" for birth and death processes which eventually become extinct. Under general assumptions on the birth and death rates, we firstly determine the behavior of the successive hitting times of large integers. We put in light two different regimes depending on whether the mean time for the process to go from $n+1$ to $n$ is negligible or not compared to the mean time to reach $n$ from infinity. In the first regime, the coming down from infinity is very fast and the convergence is weak. In the second regime, the coming down from infinity is gradual and a law of large numbers and a central limit theorem for the hitting times sequence hold. By an inversion procedure, we deduce that the process is a.s. equivalent to a non-increasing function when the time goes to zero. Our results are illustrated by several examples including applications to population dynamics and population genetics. The particular case where the death rate varies regularly is studied in details.

Convergence of a Critical Multitype Bellman-Harris Process

Abstract:In this work, we study a two-type critical branching particle system in $\mathbb{R}^{N}$, where particles follow symmetric stable motions, with type-dependent lifetimes and offspring distributions. Our main result is the convergence as $t\to\infty$ of the particle system to a non-trivial limiting population, focusing on two cases: (1) all particle lifetimes have finite mean, or (2) one type has a lifetime distribution with a heavy tail, while the others have finite mean. This complements previous results on extinction \cite{Kevei}. Using the Extended Final Value Theorem, we prove the existence of a limiting distribution for the particle system. The non extinction of the limiting population is demonstrated using a technique inspired in \cite{Fino}. These results describe the long-term behavior of the particle system, highlighting the interaction between mobility, longevity, and offspring variability. Additionally, the study of a particle system with a finite number of types would follow analogously with the techniques presented here. Our approach introduces new techniques for the asymptotic study of critical multitype branching processes.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider a generalized birth-death process (GBDP) and examined its linear versions. Using its transition probabilities, we obtain the system of differential equations that governs its state probabilities. The distribution function of its waiting-time in state $s$ given that it starts in state $s$ is obtained. For a linear version of it, namely, the generalized linear birth-death process (GLBDP), we obtain the probability generating function, mean, variance and the probability of ultimate extinction of population. Also, we obtain the maximum likelihood estimate of one of its parameter. The differential equations that govern the joint cumulant generating functions of the population size with cumulative births and cumulative deaths are derived. In the case of constant birth and death rates in GBDP, the explicit forms of the state probabilities, joint probability mass functions of population size with cumulative births and cumulative deaths, and their marginal probability mass functions are obtained. It is shown that the Laplace transform of a stochastic integral of GBDP satisfies its Kolmogorov backward equation with certain scaled parameters. Also, the first two moments of the stochastic path integral of GLBDP are obtained. Later, we consider the immigration effect in GLBDP for two different cases. An application of a linear version of GBDP and its stochastic path integral to vehicles parking management system is discussed.

Abstract:The paper discusses the continuous-time Markov Branching Process allowing Immigration. We are considering a critical case for which the second moment of offspring law and the first moment of immigration law are possibly infinite. Assuming that the nonlinear parts of the appropriate generating functions are regularly varying in the sense of Karamata, we prove theorems on convergence of transition functions of the process to invariant measures. We deduce the speed rate of these convergence providing that slowly varying factors are with the remainder.

In the present paper we prove that with the exception of a single extreme value for each index, we have the following elementary estimate on how fast the ratio in the strong density theorem of Saks will tend to one \[ \frac{|R\cap K|}{|R|}>1-o\bigg(\frac{1}{|\log d(R)|}\bigg) \qquad \text{for a.e.} \ \ x\in K \ \ \text{and for} \ \ d(R)\to 0 \] (provided $x\in R$, where $R$ is an interval in $\mathbb{R}^m$, $d$ stands for the diameter and $|\cdot|$ is the Lebesgue measure). This work is a natural sequence of [3] and constitutes a contribution to Problem 146 of Ulam [5, p. 245] (see also [8, p.78]) and Erdös' Scottish Book `Problems' [5, Chapter 4, pp. 27-33], since it is known that no general statement can be made on how fast the density will tend to one.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider contact processes on locally compact separable metric spaces with birth and death rates heterogeneous in space. Conditions on the rates that ensure the existence of invariant measures of contact processes are formulated. One of the crucial condition is the so-called critical regime condition. To prove the existence of invariant measures we used our approach proposed in \cite{PZh}. We discuss in details the multi-species contact model with a compact space of marks (species) in which both birth and death rates depend on the marks.

Abstract:G-Brownian motion has a very rich and interesting new structure that nontrivially generalizes the classical Brownian motion. Its quadratic variation process is also a continuous process with independent and stationary increments. We prove a self-normalized functional central limit theorem for independent and identically distributed random variables under the sub-linear expectation with the limit process being a G-Brownian motion self-normalized by its quadratic variation. To prove the self-normalized central limit theorem, we also establish a new Donsker’s invariance principle with the limit process being a generalized G-Brownian motion.
A large deviations principle for birth-death processes with a linear rate of downward jumps

Abstract:Birth-death processes form a natural class where ideas and results on large deviations can be tested. In this paper, we derive a large deviation principle under the assumption that the rate of a jump down (death) is growing asymptotically linearly with the population size, while the rate of a jump up (birth) is growing sub-linearly. We establish a large deviation principle under various forms of scaling of the underlying process and the corresponding normalization of the logarithm of the large deviation probabilities. The results show interesting features of dependence of the large deviation functional upon the parameters of the process and the forms of scaling and normalization.

Abstract:In this note we consider a Markov chain formed by a finite system of interacting birth-and-death processes on a finite state space. We study an asymptotic behaviour of the Markov chain as its state space becomes large. In particular, we show that the appropriately scaled Markov chain converges to a diffusion process, and derive conditions for existence of the stationary distribution of the limit diffusion process in special cases.

Abstract:In this paper we review some results on time-homogeneous birth-death processes. Specifically, for truncated birth-death processes with two absorbing or two reflecting endpoints, we recall the necessary and sufficient conditions on the transition rates such that the transition probabilities satisfy a spatial symmetry relation. The latter leads to simple expressions for first-passage-time densities and avoiding transition probabilities. This approach is thus thoroughly extended to the case of bilateral birth-death processes, even in the presence of catastrophes, and to the case of a two-dimensional birth-death process with constant rates.

Abstract:As a mathematical theory for the stochastic, nonlinear dynamics of individuals within a population, Delbruck-Gillespie process (DGP) is a birthdeath system with state-dependent rates which contain the system size V as a natural parameter. For large V, it is intimately related to an autonomous, nonlinear ODE as well as a diffusion process. For nonlinear dynamical systems with multiple attractors, the quasi-stationary and stationary behavior of such a birthdeath process can be understood in terms of a separation of time scales by a T*similar to e alpha V (alpha > 0): a relatively fast, intra-basin diffusion for t << T* and a much slower inter-basin Markov jump process for t >> T*. In this paper for one-dimensional systems, we study both stationary behavior (t=infinity) in terms of invariant distribution , and finite time dynamics in terms of the mean first passsage time (MFPT) . We obtain an asymptotic expression of MFPT in terms of the stochastic potential. We show in general no continuous diffusion process can provide asymptotically accurate representations for both the MFPT and the for a DGP. When n1 and n2 belong to two different basins of attraction, the MFPT yields the T*(V) in terms of phi (x, V)approximate to phi 0(x) + (1/V)phi 1(x). For systems with saddle-node bifurcations and catastrophe, discontinuous phase transition emerges, which can be characterized by F (x, V) in the limit of V ->infinity. In terms of timescale separation, the relation between deterministic local nonlinear bifurcations, and stochastic global phase transition is discussed. The one-dimensional theory is a pedagogic first step toward a general theory of DGP.

Statistical Inference for Stochastic Processes

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a new type of univariate and bivariate Integer-valued autoregressive model of order one (INAR(1)) to approximate univariate and bivariate linear birth and death process with constant rates. Under a specific parametric setting, the dynamic of transition probabilities and probability generating function of INAR(1) will converge to that of birth and death process as the length of subintervals goes to 0. Due to the simplicity of Markov structure, maximum likelihood estimation is feasible for INAR(1) model, which is not the case for bivariate and multivariate birth and death process. This means that the statistical inference of bivariate birth and death process can be achieved via the maximum likelihood estimation of a bivariate INAR(1) model.
On Transient Probabilities of Fractional Birth-Death Process

Abstract:We study a fractional birth-death process with state dependent birth and death rates. It is defined using a system of fractional differential equations that generalizes the classical birth-death process introduced by Feller (1939). We obtain the closed form expressions for its transient probabilities using Adomian decomposition method. In this way, we obtain the unknown transient probabilities for the classical birth-death process (see Feller (1968), p. 454). Its various distributional properties are studied. For the case of linear birth and death rates, the obtained results are verified with the existing results. Also, we discuss the cumulative births in the fractional linear birth-death process. Later, we consider a time-changed linear birth-death process where we discuss the asymptotic behaviour of the distribution function of its extinction time at zero.

Abstract:This article studies the quasi-stationary behaviour of population processes with unbounded absorption rate, including one-dimensional birth and death processes with catastrophes and multi-dimensional birth and death processes, modeling biological populations in interaction. To handle this situation, we develop original non-linear Lyapunov criteria. We obtain the exponential convergence in total variation of the conditional distributions to a unique quasi-stationary distribution, uniformly with respect to the initial distribution. Our results cover all one-dimensional birth and death processes which come down from infinity with catastrophe rate satisfying appropriate bounds, and multi-dimensional birth and death models with stronger intra-specific than inter-specific competition.

Abstract:It has been known for a long time that for birth-and-death processes started in zero the first passage time of a given level is distributed as a sum of independent exponentially distributed random variables, the parameters of which are the negatives of the eigenvalues of the stopped process. Recently, Diaconis and Miclo have given a probabilistic proof of this fact by constructing a coupling between a general birth-and-death process and a process whose birth rates are the negatives of the eigenvalues, ordered from high to low, and whose death rates are zero, in such a way that the latter process is always ahead of the former, and both arrive at the same time at the given level. In this note, we extend their methods by constructing a third process, whose birth rates are the negatives of the eigenvalues ordered from low to high and whose death rates are zero, which always lags behind the original process and also arrives at the same time.
