Abstract:Overlapping community discovery in large networks is an essential issue in graph theory and network research, since nodes might belong to many communities. Label propagation algorithms (LPA) have received a lot of interest since they are simple and scalable. This study investigates the use of label propagation in overlapping community identification, giving a comprehensive evaluation of relevant methodologies and improvements. We examine LPA's merits and limitations, emphasizing how it captures overlapping patterns in large-scale networks without needing previous knowledge. We also address standard assessment measures like NMI, F1-score, and modularity, stressing their use in evaluating the quality of identified communities. Class imbalance, graph sparsity, and the necessity for adaptive label propagation schemes are all addressed, as well as future research goals. This include creating hybrid models, enhancing management of unbalanced classes, and investigating transdisciplinary applications in areas like as social networks, biology, and cybersecurity. This survey seeks to give a thorough knowledge of label propagation approaches for detecting overlapping communities, as well as useful insights. This comprehensive review of Label Propagation Algorithm (LPA) advances from 2008 to 2023 is presented in this study. We investigate LPA variations in these studies. Our survey show that although each alternative improves the solution's effectiveness or simplifies computation with sufficient efficiency, no one version is uniformly preferable.
