Abstract:The niche graph of a digraph $D$ is the (simple undirected) graph which has the same vertex set as $D$ and has an edge between two distinct vertices $x$ and $y$ if and only if $N^+_D(x) \cap N^+_D(y) \neq \emptyset$ or $N^-_D(x) \cap N^-_D(y) \neq \emptyset$, where $N^+_D(x)$ (resp. $N^-_D(x)$) is the set of out-neighbors (resp. in-neighbors) of $x$ in $D$. A digraph $D=(V,A)$ is called a semiorder (or a unit interval order) if there exist a real-valued function $f:V \to \mathbb{R}$ on the set $V$ and a positive real number $\delta \in \mathbb{R}$ such that $(x,y) \in A$ if and only if $f(x) > f(y) + \delta$. A digraph $D=(V,A)$ is called an interval order if there exists an assignment $J$ of a closed real interval $J(x) \subset \mathbb{R}$ to each vertex $x \in V$ such that $(x,y) \in A$ if and only if $\min J(x) > \max J(y)$. S. -R. Kim and F. S. Roberts characterized the competition graphs of semiorders and interval orders in 2002, and Y. Sano characterized the competition-common enemy graphs of semiorders and interval orders in 2010. In this note, we give characterizations of the niche graphs of semiorders and interval orders.

Abstract:Ranking the participants of a tournament has applications in voting, paired comparisons analysis, sports and other domains. In this paper we introduce bipartite tournaments, which model situations in which two different kinds of entity compete indirectly via matches against players of the opposite kind; examples include education (students/exam questions) and solo sports (golfers/courses). In particular, we look to find rankings via chain graphs, which correspond to bipartite tournaments in which the sets of adversaries defeated by the players on one side are nested with respect to set inclusion. Tournaments of this form have a natural and appealing ranking associated with them. We apply chain editing -- finding the minimum number of edge changes required to form a chain graph -- as a new mechanism for tournament ranking. The properties of these rankings are investigated in a probabilistic setting, where they arise as maximum likelihood estimators, and through the axiomatic method of social choice theory. Despite some nice properties, two problems remain: an important anonymity axiom is violated, and chain editing is NP-hard. We address both issues by relaxing the minimisation constraint in chain editing, and characterise the resulting ranking methods via a greedy approximation algorithm.

On $(1,2)$-step competition graphs of multipartite tournaments II

Abstract:A multipartite tournament is an orientation of a complete $k$-partite graph for some positive integer $k\geq 3$. We say that a multipartite tournament $D$ is tight if every partite set forms a clique in the $(1,2)$-step competition graph, denoted by $C_{1,2}(D)$, of $D$. In the previous paper titled "On $(1,2)$-step competition graphs of multipartite tournaments" \cite{choi202412step} we completely characterize $C_{1,2}(D)$ for a tight multipartite tournament $D$. As an extension, in this paper, we study $(1,2)$-step competition graphs of multipartite tournaments that are not tight, which will be called loose. For a loose multipartite tournament $D$, various meaningful results are obtained in terms of $C_{1,2}(D)$ being interval and $C_{1,2}(D)$ being connected.

Abstract:We study variants of Sidorenko's conjecture in tournaments, where new phenomena arise that do not have clear analogues in the setting of undirected graphs. We first consider oriented graphs that are systematically under-represented in tournaments (called tournament anti-Sidorenko). We prove that such oriented graphs must be quite sparse; specifically, the maximum number of edges of a $k$-vertex oriented graph which is tournament anti-Sidorenko is $(1+o(1))k\log_2 k$.

Abstract:In 2010, Vukičević introduced an new graph invariant, the inverse sum indeg index of a graph, which has been studied due to its wide range of applications. Let Bnd be the class of bipartite graphs of order n and diameter d. In this paper, we mainly characterize the bipartite graphs in Bnd with the maximal inverse sum indeg index. Bipartite graphs with the largest, second-largest, and smallest inverse sum indeg indexes are also completely characterized.
Acyclic subgraphs of tournaments with high chromatic number

Abstract:We prove that every $n$-vertex tournament $G$ has an acyclic subgraph with chromatic number at least $n^{5/9-o(1)}$, while there exists an $n$-vertex tournament $G$ whose every acyclic subgraph has chromatic number at most $n^{3/4+o(1)}$. This establishes in a strong form a conjecture of Nassar and Yuster and improves on another result of theirs. Our proof combines probabilistic and spectral techniques together with some additional ideas. In particular, we prove a lemma showing that every tournament with many transitive subtournaments has a large subtournament that is almost transitive. This may be of independent interest.

Abstract:Characterizing graphs by the spectra of various matrices associated with the graphs has long been an important topic in spectral graph theory. However, it is generally very hard to show a given graph to be determined by its spectrum. This paper gives a simple criterion for a tournament to be determined by its adjacency spectrum. More precisely, let G be a tournament of order n with adjacency matrix A, and WA(G)=[e,Ae,...,An−1e] be its walk matrix, where e is the all-one vector. We show that, for any self-converse tournament G, if det⁡WA(G) is square-free, then G is uniquely determined by its adjacency spectrum among all tournaments. The result is somewhat unexpected, which was achieved by employing some recent tools developed by the second author for showing a graph to be determined by its generalized spectrum. The key observation is that for a tournament G, the complement of G coincides with the converse of G, and hence a certain equivalence between the ordinary adjacency spectrum and the generalized (skew)-adjacency spectrum for G can be established. Moreover, some equivalent formulations of the above result, as well as some related ones are also presented.
Tournament completions of bipartite tournaments and their augmented directed cycles

Abstract:A tournament $T$ is a tournament completion of a bipartite tournament $D$ if $D$ is a spanning subdigraph of $T$, i.e., $V(D)=V(T)$ and $A(D)\subseteq A(T)$. If $C$ is a $k$-dicycle (i.e., directed cycle of length $k$) in a tournament completion $T$ of $D$ and $C$ is not a dicycle in $D$, i.e., $A(C)\subseteq A(T)$ and $A(C)\not\subseteq A(D)$, then we call $C$ an augmented $k$-dicycle of $T$. In this paper, we investigate the families of bipartite tournaments for which there exists a tournament completion with exactly one augmented $3$-dicycle and with no augmented $4$-dicycles. Our investigation may be viewed as a variant of the orientation completion problem initiated by Bang-Jensen et al..

Abstract:Let G be a simple graph with the adjacency matrix A ( G ) , and let τ ( G ) denote the smallest positive eigenvalue of A ( G ) . Let G n be the class of all connected bipartite graphs on n = 2 k vertices with a unique perfect matching. In this article, we characterize the graphs G in G n such that τ ( G ) does not exceed 1 2 . Using the above characterization, we obtain the unique graphs in G n with the maximum and the second maximum τ , respectively. Further, we prove that the largest and the second largest limit points of the smallest positive eigenvalues of bipartite graphs with a unique perfect matching are 1 2 and the reciprocal of α 3 1 2 + α 3 − 1 2 , respectively, where α 3 is the largest root of x 3 − x − 1 .

Abstract:Given a positive integer $m$, the $m$-step competition graph of a digraph $D$, denoted by $C^m(D)$, has the same vertex set as $D$ and has an edge between vertices $u$ and $v$ if and only if there exists a vertex $w$ such that there exist directed walks of length $m$ from $u$ to $w$ and from $v$ to $w$, respectively. In this paper, we completely characterize the convergence of $\{C^m(D)\}_{m=1}^{\infty}$ for a multipartite tournament $D$ based on the last nontrivial strong component of $D$. Furthermore, not only do we determine the limit in the case of convergence, but also in the event of divergence, we specify how $C^m(D)$ changes periodically depending on the value of $m$. Our results extend the work of Jung et al. [On the limit of the sequence $\{C^m (D)\}_{m=1}^{\infty}$ for a multipartite tournament $D$. Discrete Appl. Math., 340:1--13, 2023] which addresses the case of the last strong component being nontrivial, thereby completing the convergence analysis of $\{C^m(D)\}_{m=1}^{\infty}$ for a multipartite tournament $D$.

Abstract:In 1981, Bermond and Thomassen conjectured that for any positive integer k , every digraph with minimum out-degree at least 2k−1 admits k vertex-disjoint directed cycles. In this short paper, we verify the Bermond-Thomassen conjecture for triangle-free multipartite tournaments and 3-partite tournaments. Furthermore, we characterize 3-partite tournaments with minimum out-degree at least 2k−1 ( k≥2 ) such that in each set of k vertex-disjoint directed cycles, every cycle has the same length.

Runtime Analysis of Restricted Tournament Selection for Bimodal Optimisation

Abstract:Niching methods have been developed to maintain the population diversity, to investigate many peaks in parallel and to reduce the effect of genetic drift. We present the first rigorous runtime analyses of restricted tournament selection (RTS), embedded in a ($\mu$+1) EA, and analyse its effectiveness at finding both optima of the bimodal function ${\rm T{\small WO}M{\small AX}}$. In RTS, an offspring competes against the closest individual, with respect to some distance measure, amongst $w$ (window size) population members (chosen uniformly at random with replacement), to encourage competition within the same niche. We prove that RTS finds both optima on ${\rm T{\small WO}M{\small AX}}$ efficiently if the window size $w$ is large enough. However, if $w$ is too small, RTS fails to find both optima even in exponential time, with high probability. We further consider a variant of RTS selecting individuals for the tournament \emph{without} replacement. It yields a more diverse tournament and is more effective at preventing one niche from taking over the other. However, this comes at the expense of a slower progress towards optima when a niche collapses to a single individual. Our theoretical results are accompanied by experimental studies that shed light on parameters not covered by the theoretical results and support a conjectured lower runtime bound.

Abstract:For an oriented graph $D$ and a set $X\subseteq V(D)$, the inversion of $X$ in $D$ is the digraph obtained by reversing the orientations of the edges of $D$ with both endpoints in $X$. The inversion number of $D$, $\textrm{inv}(D)$, is the minimum number of inversions which can be applied in turn to $D$ to produce an acyclic digraph. Answering a recent question of Bang-Jensen, da Silva, and Havet we show that, for each $k\in\mathbb{N}$ and tournament $T$, the problem of deciding whether $\textrm{inv}(T)\leq k$ is solvable in time $O_k(|V(T)|^2)$, which is tight for all $k$. In particular, the problem is fixed-parameter tractable when parameterised by $k$. On the other hand, we build on their work to prove their conjecture that for $k\geq 1$ the problem of deciding whether a general oriented graph $D$ has $\textrm{inv}(D)\leq k$ is NP-complete. We also construct oriented graphs with inversion number equal to twice their cycle transversal number, confirming another conjecture of Bang-Jensen, da Silva, and Havet, and we provide a counterexample to their conjecture concerning the inversion number of so-called 'dijoin' digraphs while proving that it holds in certain cases. Finally, we asymptotically solve the natural extremal question in this setting, improving on previous bounds of Belkhechine, Bouaziz, Boudabbous, and Pouzet to show that the maximum inversion number of an $n$-vertex tournament is $(1+o(1))n$.
