Abstract:We consider the Br vacancy in CsPbBr3 as a prototype for the impact of structural dynamics on defect energetics in halide perovskites (HaPs). Using first-principles molecular dynamics based on density functional theory, we find that the static picture of defect energetics breaks down; the energy of the Br vacancy level is found to be intrinsically dynamic, oscillating by as much as 1 eV on the ps time scale at room temperature. These significant energy fluctuations are correlated with the distance between the neighboring Pb atoms across the vacancy and with the electrostatic potential at these Pb atomic sites. We expect this unusually strong coupling of structural dynamics and defect energetics to bear important implications for both experimental and theoretical analysis of defect characteristics in HaPs. It may also hold significant ramifications for carrier transport and defect tolerance in this class of photovoltaic materials.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is: in halide perovskites (HaPs), whether the static defect energy - level model can accurately describe the characteristics of defects, especially in the case of bromine vacancies (Br vacancy) in CsPbBr₃. Specifically, the author studied the energy fluctuations of bromine vacancies and their relationship with structural dynamics through first - principles molecular dynamics (DFT - MD) simulations. ### Main problems: 1. **Validity of the static defect energy - level model**: Traditionally, most theoretical studies use static models to calculate defect energy levels, that is, assuming that the atomic nuclei are at a fixed local minimum energy position. However, it is not clear whether this static model is applicable to halide perovskite materials. 2. **Dynamic characteristics of bromine vacancy energy**: In CsPbBr₃, is the energy of the bromine vacancy static or fluctuates over time? If it fluctuates, what are the fluctuation range and frequency? 3. **Influence of structural dynamics on defect energy levels**: Are the energy fluctuations of bromine vacancies related to the movement of surrounding atoms (such as the change in the distance between lead atoms) and potential fluctuations? ### Research background: - Halide perovskite materials have become ideal candidate materials for optoelectronic devices such as photovoltaics and light - emitting diodes due to their excellent optoelectronic properties. - Defect states in such materials are usually considered "benign", that is, they have less influence on carrier scattering and recombination. - Traditional density functional theory (DFT) studies usually use static models, ignoring the dynamic effects of atomic nuclei. ### Research methods: - Use first - principles molecular dynamics (DFT - MD) simulations based on density functional theory to study the energy fluctuations of bromine vacancies in CsPbBr₃. - Compare similar defects in different materials (such as GaAs) to highlight the unique properties of halide perovskites. ### Key findings: - The energy of bromine vacancies is not static but fluctuates violently on the picosecond scale, and the maximum fluctuation range can reach about 1 eV. - The fluctuations of defect energy levels are closely related to the distance between neighboring lead atoms and the potential fluctuations at these atoms. - This dynamic behavior leads to a wide distribution of defect energy levels within the entire bandgap, which cannot be described by a single static value. ### Conclusions: - The static defect energy - level model fails in halide perovskites, especially for bromine vacancies in CsPbBr₃. - The dynamic characteristics of defect energy levels are of great significance for experimental and theoretical analysis and may affect carrier transport and device performance. - This finding provides a new perspective for understanding the defect - tolerance mechanism in halide perovskites and suggests that future research needs to consider the influence of structural dynamics on defect characteristics. Through this research, the author reveals the complex dynamic behavior of defect energy levels in halide perovskites, challenges the traditional static model, and provides an important reference for future experimental and theoretical research.
