Abstract:Abstract The geometrical formulation of gravity is not unique and can be set up in a variety of spacetimes. Even though the gravitational sector enjoys this freedom of different geometrical interpretations, consistent matter couplings have to be assured for a steady foundation of gravity. In generalised geometries, further ambiguities arise in the matter couplings unless the minimal coupling principle (MCP) is adopted that is compatible with the principles of relativity, universality and inertia. In this work, MCP is applied to all standard model gauge fields and matter fields in a completely general (linear) affine geometry. This is also discussed from an effective field theory perspective. It is found that the presence of torsion generically leads to theoretical problems. However, symmetric teleparallelism, wherein the affine geometry is integrable and torsion-free, is consistent with MCP. The generalised Bianchi identity is derived and shown to determine the dynamics of the connection in a unified fashion. Also, the parallel transport with respect to a teleparallel connection is shown to be free of second clock effects.

Abstract:The covariant canonical transformation theory applied to the relativistic Hamiltonian theory of classical matter fields in dynamical space-time yields a novel (first order) gauge field theory of gravitation. The emerging field equations necessarily embrace a quadratic Riemann term added to Einstein's linear equation. The quadratic term endows space-time with inertia generating a dynamic response of the space-time geometry to deformations relative to (Anti) de Sitter geometry. A "deformation parameter" is identified, the inverse dimensionless coupling constant governing the relative strength of the quadratic invariant in the Hamiltonian, and directly observable via the deceleration parameter $q_0$. The quadratic invariant makes the system inconsistent with Einstein's constant cosmological term, $\Lambda = \mathrm{const}$. In the Friedman model this inconsistency is resolved with the scaling ansatz of a "cosmological function", $\Lambda(a)$, where $a$ is the scale parameter of the FLRW metric. %Moreover, the strain generated by the quadratic term turns out to act as a geometrical stress. The cosmological function can be normalized such that with the $\Lambda$ CDM parameter set the present-day observables, the Hubble constant and the deceleration parameter, can be reproduced. %We analyze the asymptotics of the such normalized Friedman equations with respect to both, the fundamental parameters (coupling constants) and the scale $a$. With this parameter set we recover the dark energy scenario in the late epoch. The proof that inflation in the early phase is caused by the "geometrical fluid" representing the inertia of space-time is yet pending, though.

Covariant Canonical Gauge Theory of Classical Gravitation for Scalar, Vector, and Spin-1/2 Particle Fields

Abstract:The framework of the Covariant Canonical Gauge theory of Gravity (CCGG) is described in detail. CCGG emerges naturally in the Palatini formulation, where the vierbein and the spin connection are independent fields. Neither torsion nor non-metricity are excluded. The manifestly covariant gauge process is based on canonical transformations in the De Donder-Weyl Hamiltonian formalism, starting from a small number of basic postulates. Thereby, the original system of matter fields in flat spacetime, represented by non-degenerate Hamiltonian densities, is amended by spacetime fields. The coupling of matter and spacetime fields leaves the action integral of the combined system invariant under active local Lorentz transformations and passive diffeomorphisms, aka Principle of General Relativity. We consider the Klein-Gordon, Maxwell-Proca, and Dirac fields and derive the corresponding equations of motion. Albeit the coupling of the given matter fields to the gauge fields are unambiguously determined by CCGG, the dynamics of the free gauge fields must be postulated based on physical reasoning. Our choice allows to derive Poisson-like equations of motion also for curvature and torsion. The latter is proven to be totally anti-symmetric. The affine connection is a function of the spin connection and vierbein fields. Requesting the spin connection to be anti-symmetric gives naturally metric compatibility. The canonical equations combine to an extension of the Einstein-Hilbert action with a quadratic Riemann-Cartan concomitant that endows spacetime with inertia. Moreover, a non-degenerate, quadratic version of the free Dirac Lagrangian is deployed. When coupled to gravity, the Dirac equation is endowed with an emergent mass parameter, a curvature-dependent mass correction, and novel interactions between particle spin and spacetime torsion.

Abstract:Covariance is a useful property for handling supergravity theories. In this paper, we prove a covariance property of supergravity field equations: under reasonable conditions, field equations of supergravity are covariant modulo other field equations. We prove that for any supergravity there exist such covariant equations of motion, other than the regular equations of motion, that are equivalent to the latter. The relations that we find between field equations and their covariant form can be used to obtain multiplets of field equations. In practice, the covariant field equations are easily found by simply covariantizing the ordinary field equations.

Abstract:We derive a coordinate-independent formulation of the post-1-Newtonian approximation to general relativity. This formulation is a generalization of the Newton-Cartan geometric formulation of Newtonian gravity. It involves several fields and a connection, but no spacetime metric at the fundamental level. We show that the usual coordinate-dependent equations of post-Newtonian gravity are recovered when one specializes to asymptotically flat spacetimes and to appropriate classes of coordinates.

Abstract:A general framework of the novel matter coupling in the Einstein gravity is introduced. We firstly prove that a class of theories whose Hamiltonian constraint is given by an arbitrary function $f(H_g)$, where $H_g$ is the Hamiltonian constraint of general relativity (GR), is equivalent to GR in the vaccum. A novel Jordan frame is defined when GR is rewritte in terms of one of its equivalents in this class. The transformation between the novel Jordan frame and the Eintein frame is a redifinition of lapse. We discuss two types of consistency condition for matter to couple to Einstein gravity in the novel Jordan frame. The Type I consistency condition is found by demanding all constraints to be first class; the type II consistency condition is found by demanding the algebra is closed when matter minimally couples to gravity in the novel Jordan frame, which an additional gauge condition is required. We discuss the cosmological implications from these two types of matter coupling.

Unfashionable observations about three dimensional gravity

Abstract:It is commonly accepted that the study of 2+1 dimensional quantum gravity could teach us something about the 3+1 dimensional case. The non-perturbative methods developed in this case share, as basic ingredient, a reformulation of gravity as a gauge field theory. However, these methods suffer many problems. Firstly, this perspective abandon the non-degeneracy of the metric and causality as fundamental principles, hoping to recover them in a certain low-energy limit. Then, it is not clear how these combinatorial techniques could be used in the case where matter fields are added, which are however the essential ingredients in order to produce non trivial observables in a generally covariant approach. Endly, considering the status of the observer in these approaches, it is not clear at all if they really could produce a completely covariant description of quantum gravity. We propose to re-analyse carefully these points. This study leads us to a really covariant description of a set of self-gravitating point masses in a closed universe. This approach is based on a set of observables associated to the measurements accessible to a participant-observer, they manage to capture the whole dynamic in Chern-Simons gravity as well as in true gravity. The Dirac algebra of these observables can be explicitely computed, and exhibits interesting algebraic features related to Poisson-Lie groupoids theory.

Scale-dependent gravity and covariant scale-setting

Abstract:A fundamental element of scale-dependent gravity is the scale-setting procedure. We present a new covariant expression to set the scale that arises when examining the field equations. Considering the renormalization group equations and imposing energy-momentum tensor conservation, we arrive at two models of running of the gravitational and cosmological constants. In the cosmological setting, we found that in one model the Big Bang singularity is avoided, while in the other the Hubble tension can be alleviated. At the level of cosmological perturbations, we derived the basic solutions and qualitatively discussed the impacts of this scenario on structure formation.

Abstract:A variational principle for gauge theories of gravity is presented, which maintains manifest covariance under the symmetries to which the action is invariant, throughout the calculation of the equations of motion and conservation laws. This is performed by deriving explicit manifestly covariant expressions for the Euler-Lagrange variational derivatives and Noether's theorems for a generic action of the form typically assumed in gauge theories of gravity. The approach is illustrated by application to two scale-invariant gravitational gauge theories, namely Weyl gauge theory (WGT) and the recently proposed 'extended' Weyl gauge theory (eWGT), where the latter may be considered as a novel gauging of the conformal group; the method can also be straightforwardly applied to other theories with smaller or larger symmetry groups. In addition, the approach enables one easily to establish the relationship between manifestly covariant forms of variational derivatives obtained when one or more of the gauge field strengths is set to zero either before or after the variation is performed. On the Coupling of Matter and Gravity to the Boundary of Space-Time

Abstract:We show that under certain boundary conditions on the matter fields and on the fluctuations of the background metric the gravity-matter system can be coupled to the boundary of space-time through the stress-energy tensor. The connection of the formalism developed to the Casimir effect is discussed.

Abstract:General Relativity (GR) exists in different formulations. They are equivalent in pure gravity but generically lead to distinct predictions once matter is included. After a brief overview of various versions of GR, we focus on metric-affine gravity, which avoids any assumption about the vanishing of curvature, torsion or non-metricity. We use it to construct an action of a scalar field coupled non-minimally to gravity. It encompasses as special cases numerous previously studied models. Eliminating non-propagating degrees of freedom, we derive an equivalent theory in the metric formulation of GR. Finally, we give a brief outlook to implications for Higgs inflation.

The Self-consistent Matter Coupling of a Class of Minimally Modified Gravity Theories

Abstract:The self-consistent matter coupling is found in a broad class of minimally modified gravity theories which was discovered recently. All constraints in the theories remain first class and thus a graviton has only 2 local degrees of freedom. The cosmological solution of one of the examples in this class, the so-called square root gravity, exhibits a singularity freeness at high energy limit. At low energy limit, the theory smoothly connects to GR. A general feature of the theories in this class, with the self-consistent matter coupling discovered in our current work, is the non-trivial interaction among different components of matter sector. We have also checked the Hamiltonian structure of a scalar QED coupling to the square root gravity in the same manner. All constraints in the theory are first class too and thus the local U(1) gauge symmetry in scalar QED is preserved.

Gravity-Matter Couplings from Liouville Theory

Abstract:The three-point functions for minimal models coupled to gravity are derived in the operator approach to Liouville theory which is based on its $U_q(sl(2))$ quantum group structure. The result is shown to agree with matrix-model calculations on the sphere. The precise definition of the corresponding cosmological constant is given in the operator solution of the quantum Liouville theory. It is shown that the symmetry between quantum-group spins $J$ and $-J-1$ previously put forward by the author is the explanation of the continuation in the number of screening operators discovered by Goulian and Li. Contrary to the previous discussions of this problem, the present approach clearly separates the emission operators for each leg. This clarifies the structure of the dressing by gravity. It is shown, in particular that the end points are not treated on the same footing as the mid point. Since the outcome is completely symmetric this suggests the existence of a picture-changing mechanism in two dimensional gravity.

Abstract:The main purpose of this article is to provide access to a previously unpublished and nearly lost paper: P. Hořava, "Covariant Hamilton-Jacobi Equation for Pure Gravity", which appeared originally in July 1990 as a Prague Preprint PRA-HEP-90/4, at the Institute of Physics, Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences, but appears otherwise unavailable online. The author has recently acquired an original copy of this preprint; the present article contains a verbatim transcript of the original 1990 paper, framed by a small number of comments. The contents of the 1990 paper was based on the results contained in the author's BSc Thesis, written in Czech, and presented at Charles University, Prague, in 1986. The original 1990 Abstract: We present an alternative framework for treating Einstein gravity in any dimension greater than two, and at any signature. It is based on a covariant Hamilton-Jacobi-De~Donder equation, which is proved to be equivalent to the Lagrange theory, on space-times of arbitrary topology. It in particular means that Einstein gravity can be thought of as a (covariantly) regular system. Finally, the Hamilton-Jacobi theory is studied, and it is shown that any solution of Einstein equations can be obtained from the action form equal identically to zero.
