Abstract:Suppose that $q$ is a prime power such that $q\equiv~2\pmod{3}$. By using Kantor's model of $Q^+(7,q)$, we study the orbit structure of the action of $\textup{PSU}_3(q)$ on the polar space $Q^+(7,q)$ and obtain new $(q^2+q)$- and $q^3$-ovoids with an automorphism group $\textup{PSU}_3(q)$. In this way, we determine all $\textup{PSU}_3(q)$-invariant intriguing sets of $Q^+(7,q)$. It turns out that such an intriguing set is either the unitary ovoid, one of the two new $m$-ovoids, or their complements.

Abstract: We construct a family of $\frac{(q-1)}{2}$-ovoids of $Q(4,q)$, the parabolic quadric of $\textup{PG}(4,q)$, for $q\equiv 3\pmod 4$. The existence of $\frac{(q-1)}{2}$-ovoids of $Q(4,q)$ was only known for $q=3, 7,$ or $11$. Our construction provides the first infinite family of $\frac{(q-1)}{2}$-ovoids of $Q(4,q)$.Along the way, we also give a construction of $\frac{q+1}{2}$-ovoids in $Q(4,q)$ for $q\equiv 1\pmod 4$.

In 2019 Feng and Li elegantly construct O'Nan configurations in orthogonal and Tits Buekenhout-Metz unitals. We extend their work by extending their construction to a Fano plane embedded in the orthogonal Buekenhout-Metz unital of even order. We deduce that there exist O'Nan configurations in orthogonal Buekenhout-Metz unitals different to those of Feng and Li, and make a conjecture about Fano planes embedded in orthogonal Buekenhout-Metz unitals.

Abstract:We prove that, given a partition of the point-set of $PG(3,q), q=2^n >2$, by ovoids $\{\theta_i\}^q_{i=0}$ of $PG(3,q)$ and a line $\ell$ of $PG(3,q)$, not tangent to $\theta_0$ if $\ell^\perp$ denotes the polar of $\ell$ relative to the symplectic form on $PG(3,q)$ whose isotropic lines are the tangent lines to $\theta_0$, then $\ell$ and $\ell^\perp$ are tangent to distinct ovoids $\theta_j, \theta_k$, both distinct from $\theta_0$. This uses the fact that the radical of the linear code generated by the dual duals $\ell\cup \ell^\perp$ of the hyperbolic quadrics , with $\ell$ and $\ell^\perp$ as above, is of codimension $1$

Ovoids in the cyclic presentation of PG(3,q)

Abstract:We consider the cyclic presentation of $PG(3,q)$ whose points are in the finite field $\mathbb{F}_{q^4}$ and describe the known ovoids therein. We revisit the set $\mathcal{O}$, consisting of $(q^2+1)$-th roots of unity in $\mathbb{F}_{q^4}$, and prove that it forms an elliptic quadric within the cyclic presentation of $PG(3,q)$. Additionally, following the work of Glauberman on Suzuki groups, we offer a new description of Suzuki-Tits ovoids in the cyclic presentation of $PG(3,q)$, characterizing them as the zeroes of a polynomial over $\mathbb{F}_{q^4}$.

Abstract:In this paper we study the Oort conjecture concerning the non-existence of Shimura subvarieties contained generically in the Torelli locus in the Siegel modular variety A(g). Using the poly-stability of Higgs bundles on curves and the slope inequality of Xiao on fibered surfaces, we show that a Shimura curve C is not contained generically in the Torelli locus if its canonical Higgs bundle contains a unitary Higgs subbundle of rank at least (4g + 2)/5. From this we prove that a Shimura subvariety of SU(n, 1) type is not contained generically in the Torelli locus when a numerical inequality holds, which involves the genus g, the dimension n + 1, the degree 2d of CM field of the Hermitian space, and the type of the symplectic representation defining the Shimura subdatum. A similar result holds for Shimura subvarieties of SO(n, 2) type, defined by spin groups associated to quadratic spaces over a totally real number field of degree at least 6 subject to some natural constraints of signatures.

Abstract:We study generalized gauge theories engineered by taking the low energy limit of the Dp branes wrapping X×Tp-3\documentclass[12pt]{minimal}\usepackage{amsmath}\usepackage{wasysym}\usepackage{amsfonts}\usepackage{amssymb}\usepackage{amsbsy}\usepackage{mathrsfs}\usepackage{upgreek}\setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt}\begin{document}$${X \times {\bf T}^{p-3}}$$\end{document}, with X a possibly singular surface in a Calabi–Yau fourfold Z. For toric Z and X the partition function can be computed by localization, making it a statistical mechanical model, called the gaugeorigami̲\documentclass[12pt]{minimal}\usepackage{amsmath}\usepackage{wasysym}\usepackage{amsfonts}\usepackage{amssymb}\usepackage{amsbsy}\usepackage{mathrsfs}\usepackage{upgreek}\setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt}\begin{document}$${\underline{\rm gauge\,origami}}$$\end{document}. The random variables are the ensembles of Young diagrams. The building block of the gauge origami is associated with a tetrahedron, whose edges are colored by vector spaces. Abstract:In this paper, we provide a construction of $(q+1)$-ovoids of the hyperbolic quadric $Q^+(7,q)$, $q$ an odd prime power, by glueing $(q+1)/2$-ovoids of the elliptic quadric $Q^-(5,q)$. This is possible by controlling some intersection properties of (putative) $m$-ovoids of elliptic quadrics. It yields eventually $(q+1)$-ovoids of $Q^+(7,q)$ not coming from a $1$-system. Secondly, we also construct $m$-ovoids for $m \in \{ 2,4,6,8,10\}$ in $Q^+(7,3)$. Therefore we first investigate how to construct spreads of $\pg(3,q)$ that have as many secants to an elliptic quadric as possible.

Abstract:Consider the compact quantum group $U_q(2)$, where $q$ is a non-zero complex deformation parameter such that $|q|\neq 1$. Let $C(U_q(2))$ denote the underlying $C^*$-algebra of the compact quantum group $U_q(2)$. We prove that if $q$ is a non-real complex number and $q^\prime$ is real, then the underlying $C^*$-algebras $C(U_q(2))$ and $C(U_{q^\prime}(2))$ are non-isomorphic. This is in sharp contrast with the case of braided $SU_q(2)$, introduced earlier by Woronowicz et al., where $q$ is a non-zero complex deformation parameter. In another direction, on a geometric aspect of $U_q(2)$, we introduce torus action on the $C^*$-algebra $C(U_q(2))$ and obtain a $C^*$-dynamical system $(C(U_q(2)),\mathbb{T}^3,\alpha)$. We construct a $\mathbb{T}^3$-equivariant spectral triple for $U_q(2)$ that is even and $3^+$-summable. It is shown that the Dirac operator is K-homologically nontrivial.

Gauge origami and quiver W-algebras III: Donaldson--Thomas $qq$-characters

Abstract:We further develop the BPS/CFT correspondence between quiver W-algebras/$qq$-characters and partition functions of gauge origami. We introduce $qq$-characters associated with multi-dimensional partitions with nontrivial boundary conditions which we call Donaldson--Thomas (DT) $qq$-characters. They are operator versions of the equivariant DT vertices of toric Calabi--Yau three and four-folds. Moreover, we revisit the construction of the D8 $qq$-characters with no boundary conditions and give a quantum algebraic derivation of the sign rules of the magnificent four partition function. We also show that under the proper sign rules, the D6 and D8 $qq$-characters with no boundary conditions all commute with each other and discuss its physical interpretation.

The $q$-Onsager Algebra and the Quantum Torus

Abstract:The $q$-Onsager algebra, denoted $O_q$, is defined by two generators $W_0, W_1$ and two relations called the $q$-Dolan-Grady relations. Recently, Terwilliger introduced some elements of $O_q$, said to be alternating. These elements are denoted $\{{W}_{-k}\}_{k=0}^{\infty}, \{{W}_{k+1}\}_{k=0}^{\infty}, \{{G}_{k+1}\}_{k=0}^{\infty}, \{\tilde{G}_{k+1}\}_{k=0}^{\infty}$. The alternating elements of $O_q$ are defined recursively. By construction, they are polynomials in $W_0$ and $W_1$. It is currently unknown how to express these polynomials in closed form. In this paper, we consider an algebra $T_q$, called the quantum torus. We present a basis for $T_q$ and define an algebra homomorphism $p: O_q \mapsto T_q$. In our main result, we express the $p$-images of the alternating elements of $O_q$ in the basis for $T_q$. These expressions are in a closed form that we find attractive.

Abstract:We explore the quantum algebraic formalism of the gauge origami system in $\mathbb{C}^{4}$, where D2/D4/D6/D8-branes are present. We demonstrate that the contour integral formulas have free field interpretations, leading to the operator formalism of $qq$-characters associated with each D-brane. The $qq$-characters of D2 and D4-branes correspond to screening charges and generators of the affine quiver W-algebra, respectively. On the other hand, the $qq$-characters of D6 and D8-branes represent novel types of $qq$-characters, where monomial terms are characterized by plane partitions and solid partitions. The composition of these $qq$-characters yields the instanton partition functions of the gauge origami system, eventually establishing the BPS/CFT correspondence.

Abstract:We show that the cliques of maximal size in the confluence graph of an arbitrary unital of order $q>2$ have size $q^2$, and that these cliques are the pencils of all blocks through a given point. This solves the Erdős-Ko-Rado problem for all unitals. We also determine all maximal cliques of the confluence graph of the Hermitian unitals. As an application, we show that the confluence graph of an arbitrary unital unambiguously determines the unital. Along the way, we show that each linear space with $q^2$ points such that the sizes of both point rows and line pencils are bounded above by $q+1$ embeds in a projective plane of order $q$.
