Abstract:We consider the Calkin algebra $\mathcal{Q}(\ell_2)$, i.e., the quotient of the algebra $\mathcal B(\ell_2)$ of all bounded linear operators on the separable Hilbert space $\ell_2$ divided by the ideal $\mathcal K(\ell_2)$ of all compact operators on $\ell_2$. We show that in the Cohen model of set theory ZFC there is no embedding of the product $(c_0(2^\omega))^{\mathbb{N}}$ of infinitely many copies of the abelian C*-algebra $c_0(2^\omega)$ into $\mathcal{Q}(\ell_2)$ (while $c_0(2^\omega)$ always embeds into $\mathcal{Q}(\ell_2)$). This enlarges the collection of the known examples due to Vaccaro and to McKenney and Vignati of abelian algebras, asymptotic sequence algebras, reduced products and coronas of stabilizations which consistently do not embed into the Calkin algebra. As in the Cohen model the rigidity of quotient structures fails in general, our methods do not rely on these rigidity phenomena as is the case of most examples mentioned above. The results should be considered in the context of the result of Farah, Hirshberg and Vignati which says that consistently all C*-algebras of density up to $2^\omega$ do embed into $\mathcal{Q}(\ell_2)$. In particular, the algebra $(c_0(2^\omega))^{\mathbb{N}}$ consistently embeds into the Calkin algebra as well.

Abstract:Let $p\in(1,\infty)$. We show that there is an isomorphism from any separable unital subalgebra of $B(\ell^{2})/K(\ell^{2})$ onto a subalgebra of $B(\ell^{p})/K(\ell^{p})$ that preserves the Fredholm index. As a consequence, every separable $C^{*}$-algebra is isomorphic to a subalgebra of $B(\ell^{p})/K(\ell^{p})$. Another consequence is the existence of operators on $\ell^{p}$ that behave like the essentially normal operators with arbitrary Fredholm indices in the Brown-Douglas-Fillmore theory.

Abstract:The Calkin algebra is not isomorphic to the corona of the stabilization of the Cuntz algebra~${\mathcal O}_\infty$, any other Kirchberg algebra, or even the corona of the stabilization of any unital, ${\mathcal Z}$-stable ${\mathrm C}^*$-algebra. Abstract:For every Banach space $X$ with a Schauder basis consider the Banach algebra $\mathbb{R} I\oplus\mathcal{K}_\mathrm{diag}(X)$ of all diagonal operators that are of the form $\lambda I + K$. We prove that $\mathbb{R} I\oplus\mathcal{K}_\mathrm{diag}(X)$ is a Calkin algbra i.e., there exists a Banach space $\mathcal{Y}_X$ so that the Calkin algebra of $\mathcal{Y}_X$ is isomorphic as a Banach algebra to $\mathbb{R} I\oplus\mathcal{K}_\mathrm{diag}(X)$. Among other applications of this theorem we obtain that certain hereditarily indecomposable spaces and the James spaces $J_p$ and their duals endowed with natural multiplications are Calkin algebras, that all non-reflexive Banach spaces with unconditional bases are isomorphic as Banach spaces to Calkin algebras, and that sums of reflexive spaces with unconditional bases with certain James-Tsirelson type spaces are isomorphic as Banach spaces to Calkin algebras.

Abstract:We prove that it is consistent with ZFC that every unital endomorphism of the Calkin algebra $\mathcal{Q}(H)$ is unitarily equivalent to an endomorphism of $\mathcal{Q}(H)$ which is liftable to a unital endomorphism of $\mathcal{B}(H)$. We use this result to classify all unital endomorphisms of $\mathcal{Q}(H)$ up to unitary equivalence by the Fredholm index of the image of the unilateral shift. As a further application, we show that it is consistent with ZFC that the class of $\mathrm{C}^\ast$-algebras that embed into $\mathcal{Q}(H)$ is not closed under tensor product nor countable inductive limit.

Abstract:Recent developments in Banach space theory provided unexpected examples of unital Banach algebras that are isomorphic to Calkin algebras of Banach spaces, however no example of a unital Banach algebra that cannot be realised as a~Calkin algebra has been found so far. This naturally led to the question of possible limitations of such assignments. In the present note we provide examples of unital Banach algebras meeting the necessary density condition for being the Calkin algebra of a separable Banach space that are not isomorphic to Calkin algebras of such spaces, nonetheless. The examples may be found of the form $C(X)$ for a compact space $X$, $\ell_1(G)$ for some torsion-free Abelian group, and a~simple, unital AF $C^*$-algebra. Extensions to higher densities are also presented.

Intermediate Subalgebras of Cartan embeddings in rings and C*-algebras

Abstract:Let $D \subseteq A$ be a quasi-Cartan pair of algebras. Then there exists a unique discrete groupoid twist $\Sigma \to G$ whose twisted Steinberg algebra is isomorphic to $A$ in a way that preserves $D$. In this paper, we show there is a lattice isomorphism between wide open subgroupoids of $G$ and subalgebras $C$ such that $D\subseteq C\subseteq A$ and $D \subseteq C$ is a quasi-Cartan pair. We also characterise which algebraic diagonal/algebraic Cartan/quasi-Cartan pairs have the property that every subalgebra $C$ with $D\subseteq C\subseteq A$ has $D \subseteq C$ a diagonal/Cartan/quasi-Cartan pair. In the diagonal case, when the coefficient ring is a field, it is all of them. Beyond that, only pairs that are close to being diagonal have this property. We then apply our techniques to C*-algebraic inclusions and give a complete characterization of which Cartan pairs $D \subseteq A$ have the property that every C*-subalgebra $C$ with $D\subseteq C\subseteq A$ has $D \subseteq C$ a Cartan pair.

Abstract:It is proved that for every compact metric space $K$ there exists a Banach space $X$ whose Calkin algebra $\mathcal{L}(X)/\mathcal{K}(X)$ is homomorphically isometric to $C(K)$. This is achieved by appropriately modifying the Bourgain-Delbaen $\mathscr{L}_\infty$-space of Argyros and Haydon in such a manner that sufficiently many diagonal operators on this space are bounded.

Abstract:A Banach space characterization of simple real or complex $C^*$-algebras is given which even characterizes the underlying field. As an application, it is shown that if $\mathfrak A_1$ and $\mathfrak A_2$ are Birkhoff-James isomorphic simple $C^*$-algebras over the fields $\mathbb F_1$ and $\mathbb F_2$, respectively and if $\mathfrak A_1$ is finite-dimensional with dimension greater than one, then $\mathbb F_1=\mathbb F_2$ and $\mathfrak A_1$ and $\mathfrak A_2$ are (isometrically) $\ast$-isomorphic $C^*$-algebras.

Abstract:We prove that an inclusion $\mathcal{B} \subset \mathcal{A}$ of simple unital $C^*$-algebras with a finite-index conditional expectation is regular if and only if there exists a finite group $G$ that admits a cocycle action $(\alpha,\sigma)$ on the intermediate $C^*$-subalgebra $\mathcal{C}$ generated by $\mathcal{B}$ and its centralizer $\mathcal{C}_\mathcal{A}(\mathcal{B})$ such that $\mathcal{B}$ is outerly $\alpha$-invariant and $(\mathcal{B} \subset \mathcal{A}) \cong ( \mathcal{B} \subset \mathcal{C}\rtimes^r_{\alpha, \sigma} G)$. Prior to this characterization, we prove the existence of two-sided and unitary quasi-bases for the minimal conditional expectation of any such inclusion, and also show that such an inclusion has integer Watatani index and depth at most $2$.

Abstract:The main aim of this paper is to give the invariant properties of representations of algebras under cleft extensions over a semisimple Hopf algebra. Firstly, we explain the concept of the cleft extension and give a relation between the cleft extension and the crossed product which is the approach we depend upon. Then, by making use of them, we prove that over an algebraically closed field k , for a finite dimensional Hopf algebra H which is semisimple as well as its dual H * , the representation type of an algebra is an invariant property under a finite dimensional H -cleft extension. In the other part, we still show that over an arbitrary field k , the Nakayama property of a k -algebra is also an invariant property under an H -cleft extension when the radical of the algebra is H -stable.
On $\mathbb R$-embeddability of almost disjoint families and Akemann-Doner C*-algebras

Abstract:An almost disjoint family $\mathcal A$ of subsets of $\mathbb N$ is said to be $\mathbb R$-embeddable if there is a function $f:\mathbb N\rightarrow \mathbb R$ such that the sets $f[A]$ are ranges of real sequences converging to distinct reals for distinct $A\in \mathcal A$. It is well known that almost disjoint families which have few separations, such as Luzin families, are not $\mathbb R$-embeddable. We study extraction principles related to $\mathbb R$-embeddability and separation properties of almost disjoint families of $\mathbb N$ as well as their limitations. An extraction principle whose consistency is our main result is: every almost disjoint family of size continuum contains an $\mathbb R$-embeddable subfamily of size continuum. It is true in the Sacks model. The Cohen model serves to show that the above principle does not follow from the fact that every almost disjoint family of size continuum has two separated subfamilies of size continuum. We also construct in ZFC an almost disjoint family, where no two uncountable subfamilies can be separated but always a countable subfamily can be separated from any disjoint subfamily. Using a refinement of the $\mathbb R$-embeddability property called a controlled $\mathbb R$-embedding property we obtain the following results concerning Akemann-Doner C*-algebras which are induced by uncountable almost disjoint families: a) In ZFC there are Akemann-Doner C*-algebras of density $\mathfrak c$ with no commutative subalgebras of density $\mathfrak c$, b) It is independent from ZFC whether there is an Akemann-Doner algebra of density $\mathfrak c$ with no nonseparable commutative subalgebra. This completes an earlier result that there is in ZFC an Akemann-Doner algebra of density $\omega_1$ with no nonseparable commutative subalgebra.

Abstract:For a Banach space $X$, let $\mathcal{L}(X)$ denote the algebra of all bounded linear operators on $X$ and let $\mathcal{K}(X)$ denote the compact operator ideal in $\mathcal{L}(X)$. The quotient algebra $\mathcal{L}(X)/\mathcal{K}(X)$ is called the Calkin algebra of $X$, and it is denoted $\mathcal{C}al(X)$. We prove that the unitization of $\mathcal{K}(c_0)$ is isomorphic as a Banach algebra to the Calkin algebra of some Banach space $\mathcal{Z}_{\mathcal{K}(c_0)}$. This Banach space is an Argyros-Haydon sum $(\oplus_{n=1}^\infty X_n)_\mathrm{AH}$ of a sequence of copies $X_n$ of a single Argyros-Haydon space $\mathfrak{X}_\mathrm{AH}$, and the external versus the internal Argyros-Haydon construction parameters are chosen from disjoint sets.

Abstract:For a Banach space $X$ denote by $\mathcal{L}(X)$ the algebra of bounded linear operators on $X$, by $\mathcal{K}(X)$ the compact operator ideal on $X$, and by $Cal(X) = \mathcal{L}(X)/\mathcal{K}(X)$ the Calkin algebra of $X$. We prove that $Cal(X)$ can be an infinite-dimensional reflexive Banach space, even isomorphic to a Hilbert space. More precisely, for every Banach space $U$ with a normalized unconditional basis not having a $c_0$ asymptotic version we construct a Banach space $\mathfrak{X}_U$ and a sequence of mutually annihilating projections $(I_s)_{s=1}^\infty$ on $\mathfrak{X}_U$, i.e., $I_sI_t = 0$, for $s\neq t$, such that $\mathcal{L}(\mathfrak{X}_U) = \mathcal{K}(\mathfrak{X}_U)\oplus[(I_s)_{s=1}^\infty]\oplus\mathbb{C}I$ and $(I_s)_{s=1}^\infty$ is equivalent to $(u_s)_{s=1}^\infty$. In particular, $Cal(\mathfrak{X}_U)$ is isomorphic, as a Banach algebra, to the unitization of $U$ with coordinate-wise multiplication. Banach spaces $U$ meeting these criteria include $\ell_p$ and $(\oplus_n\ell_\infty^n)_p$, $1\leq p<\infty$, with their unit vector bases, $L_p$, $1 <p<\infty$, with the Haar system, the asymptotic-$\ell_1$ Tsirelson space and Schlumprecht space with their usual bases, and many others.

Abstract:We analyze the sequence obtained by consecutive applications of the Cantor-Bendixson derivative for a noncommutative scattered $C^*$-algebra $\mathcal A$, using the ideal $\mathcal I^{At}(\mathcal A)$ generated by the minimal projections of $\mathcal A$. With its help, we present some fundamental results concerning scattered $C^*$-algebras, in a manner parallel to the commutative case of scattered compact or locally compact Hausdorff spaces and superatomic Boolean algebras. It also allows us to formulate problems which have motivated the "cardinal sequences" programme in the classical topology, in the noncommutative context. This leads to some new constructions of noncommutative scattered $C^*$-algebras and new open problems. In particular, we construct a type $I$ $C^*$-algebra which is the inductive limit of stable ideals $\mathcal A_\alpha$, along an uncountable limit ordinal $\lambda$, such that $\mathcal A_{\alpha+1}/\mathcal A_\alpha$ is $*$-isomorphic to the algebra of all compact operators on a separable Hilbert space and $\mathcal A_{\alpha+1}$ is $\sigma$-unital and stable for each $\alpha<\lambda$, but $\mathcal A$ is not stable and where all ideals of $\mathcal A$ are of the form $\mathcal A_\alpha$. In particular, $\mathcal A$ is a nonseparable $C^*$-algebra with no ideal which is maximal among the stable ideals. This answers a question of M. R\ordam in the nonseparable case. All the above $C^*$-algebras $A_\alpha$s and $A$ satisfy the following version of the definition of an AF algebra: any finite subset can be approximated from a finite-dimensional subalgebra. Two more complex constructions based on the language developed in this paper are presented in separate papers.

Abstract:We investigate the set-theoretic properties of the lattice of projections in the Calkin algebra of a separable infinite-dimensional Hilbert space in relation to those of the Boolean algebra $P(\omega)/{\rm fin}$, which is isomorphic to the sublattice of diagonal projections. In particular, we prove some basic consistency results about the possible cofinalities of well-ordered sequences of projections and the possible cardinalities of sets of mutually orthogonal projections that are analogous to well-known results about $P(\omega)/{\rm fin}$.

Abstract:We show that in the class of Lindelöf Čech-complete spaces the property of being $C$-embedded is quite well-behaved. It admits a useful characterization that can be used to show that products and perfect preimages of $C$-embedded spaces are again $C$-embedded. We also show that both properties, Lindelöf and Čech-complete, are needed in the product result.

Abstract:We show that a C*-algebra generated by an irreducible representation of a finitely generated virtually nilpotent group satisfies the universal coefficient theorem and has real rank 0. This combines with previous joint work with Gillaspy and McKenney to show these C*-algebras are classified by their Elliott invariants. When we further assume the group is nilpotent we build explicit Cartan subalgebras that are closely related to the group and representation, although the Cartan subalgebras are generally not C*-diagonals.
