Abstract:We present an all-passive, transformable optical mapping (ATOM) near-eye display based on the "human-centric design" principle. By employing a diffractive optical element, a distorted grating, the ATOM display can project different portions of a 2D display screen to various depths, rendering a real 3D image with correct focus cues. Thanks to its all-passive optical mapping architecture, the ATOM display features a reduced form factor and low power consumption. Moreover, the system can readily switch between a real-3D and a high-resolution 2D display mode, providing task-tailored viewing experience for a variety of VR/AR applications.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper attempts to solve an important problem in virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) technologies, that is, how to design a near - eye display device that conforms to the "human - centered design" principle. Specifically, the paper proposes a fully passive, transformable optical mapping (ATOM) near - eye display method, aiming to overcome the vergence - accommodation conflict in existing 3D display technologies, thereby reducing users' visual discomfort and fatigue. By using a twisted grating as a passive diffraction optical element, the ATOM display device can project different parts of a 2D screen to different depths, generating a true 3D image with correct focusing cues. In addition, this system can also easily switch between the true 3D display mode and the high - resolution 2D display mode, providing a viewing experience customized for different tasks, thus improving the usability and flexibility of the device.
