Abstract:We study the question of approximating a compact geodesic metric space by metric graphs satisfying a uniform upper bound on their first Betti number. We prove that, up to a suitable multiplicative constant, Reeb graphs of distance functions to a point provide optimal approximation in the Gromov-Hausdsorff sense.

Abstract:In this paper, we explore the limit structure of a sequence of Riemannian manifolds with Bakry-Émery Ricci curvature bounded below in the Gromov-Hausdorff topology. By extending the techniques established by Cheeger-Cloding for Riemannian manifolds with Ricci curvature bounded below, we prove that each tangent space at a point of the limit space is a metric cone. We also analyze the singular structure of the limit space analogous to a work of Cheeger-Colding-Tian. Our results will be applied to study the limit space of a sequence of Kähler metrics arising from solutions of certain complex Monge-Ampère equations for the existence of Kähler-Ricci solitons on a Fano manifold via the continuity method.
Notes on the Cheeger and Colding version of the Reifenberg theorem for metric spaces

Abstract:The classical Reifenberg's theorem says that a set which is sufficiently well approximated by planes uniformly at all scales is a topological Hölder manifold. Remarkably, this generalizes to metric spaces, where the approximation by planes is replaced by the Gromov-Hausdorff distance. This fact was shown by Cheeger and Colding in an appendix of one of their celebrated works on Ricci limit spaces [8]. Given the recent interest around this statement in the growing field of analysis in metric spaces, in this note we provide a self contained and detailed proof of the Cheeger and Colding result. Our presentation substantially expands the arguments in [8] and makes explicit all the relevant estimates and constructions. As a byproduct we also shows a biLipschitz version of this result which, even if folklore among experts, was not present in the literature. This work is an extract from the doctoral dissertation of the second author.

Abstract:In this paper, we study Gromov hyperbolicity and related parameters, that represent how close (locally) a metric space is to a tree from a metric point of view. The study of Gromov hyperbolicity for geodesic metric spaces can be reduced to the study of graph hyperbolicity. The main contribution of this paper is a new characterization of the hyperbolicity of graphs. This characterization has algorithmic implications in the field of large-scale network analysis. A sharp estimate of graph hyperbolicity is useful, e.g., in embedding an undirected graph into hyperbolic space with minimum distortion [Verbeek and Suri, SoCG'14]. The hyperbolicity of a graph can be computed in polynomial-time, however it is unlikely that it can be done in subcubic time. This makes this parameter difficult to compute or to approximate on large graphs. Using our new characterization of graph hyperbolicity, we provide a simple factor 8 approximation algorithm for computing the hyperbolicity of an $n$-vertex graph $G=(V,E)$ in optimal time $O(n^2)$ (assuming that the input is the distance matrix of the graph). This algorithm leads to constant factor approximations of other graph-parameters related to hyperbolicity (thinness, slimness, and insize). We also present the first efficient algorithms for exact computation of these parameters. All of our algorithms can be used to approximate the hyperbolicity of a geodesic metric space. We also show that a similar characterization of hyperbolicity holds for all geodesic metric spaces endowed with a geodesic spanning tree. Along the way, we prove that any complete geodesic metric space $(X,d)$ has such a geodesic spanning tree. We hope that this fundamental result can be useful in other contexts.

Abstract:We extend known results on chordal graphs and distance-hereditary graphs to much larger graph classes by using only a common metric property of these graphs. Specifically, a graph is called -metric ( ) if it satisfies the following -metric property for every vertices u , w , v and x : if a shortest path between u and w and a shortest path between x and v share a terminal edge vw , then . Roughly, gluing together any two shortest paths along a common terminal edge may not necessarily result in a shortest path but yields a "near-shortest" path with defect at most i . It is known that -metric graphs are exactly ptolemaic graphs, and that chordal graphs and distance-hereditary graphs are -metric for and , respectively. We show that an additive O ( i )-approximation of the radius, of the diameter, and in fact of all vertex eccentricities of an -metric graph can be computed in total linear time. Our strongest results are obtained for -metric graphs, for which we prove that a central vertex can be computed in subquadratic time, and even better in linear time for so-called -metric graphs (a superclass of chordal graphs and of plane triangulations with inner vertices of degree at least 7). The latter answers a question raised in Dragan (Inf Probl Lett 154:105873, 2020), 2020). Our algorithms follow from new results on centers and metric intervals of -metric graphs. In particular, we prove that the diameter of the center is at most (at most 3, if ). The latter partly answers a question raised in Yushmanov and Chepoi (Math Probl Cybernet 3:217–232, 1991).

Abstract:We investigate the geometry of the space of immersed closed curves equipped with reparametrization-invariant Riemannian metrics; the metrics we consider are Sobolev metrics of possible fractional-order . We establish the critical Sobolev index on the metric for several key geometric properties. Our first main result shows that the Riemannian metric induces a metric space structure if and only if . Our second main result shows that the metric is geodesically complete (i.e., the geodesic equation is globally well posed) if , whereas if then finite-time blowup may occur. The geodesic completeness for is obtained by proving metric completeness of the space of -immersed curves with the distance induced by the Riemannian metric.

Lower Bounding the Gromov--Hausdorff distance in Metric Graphs

Abstract:Let $G$ be a compact, connected metric graph and let $X\subseteq G$ be a subset. If $X$ is sufficiently dense in $G$, we show that the Gromov--Hausdorff distance matches the Hausdorff distance, namely $d_{GH}(G,X)=d_{H}(G,X)$. In a recent study, when the metric graph is the circle $G=S^1$ with circumference $2\pi$, the equality $d_{GH}(S^1,X)=d_{H}(S^1,X)$ was established whenever $d_{GH}(S^1,X)<\frac{\pi}{6}$. Our result for general metric graphs relaxes this hypothesis in the circle case to $d_{GH}(S^1,X)<\frac{\pi}{3}$, and furthermore, we give an example showing that the constant $\frac{\pi}{3}$ is the best possible. We lower bound the Gromov--Hausdorff distance $d_{GH}(G,X)$ by the Hausdorff distance $d_{H}(G,X)$ via a simple topological obstruction: showing a correspondence with too small distortion contradicts the connectedness of $G$. Moreover, for two sufficiently dense subsets $X,Y\subseteq G$, we provide new lower bounds on $d_{GH}(X,Y)$ in terms of the Hausdorff distance $d_{H}(X,Y)$, which is $O(n^2)$-time computable if the subsets have at most $n$ points.

Approximation Algorithms for the Gromov Hyperbolicity of Discrete Metric Spaces.

Abstract:This paper discusses new approximation algorithms for computing the Gromov hyperbolicity of an n-point discrete metric space. We give a (1 + epsilon)-approximation algorithm with running time (O) over tilde(epsilon (1)n(1 vertical bar omega)), where O(n(omega)) = O(n(2.373)) is the time complexity of matrix multiplications. Here an alpha-approximation delta' means delta' <= delta' <= alpha delta' for the Gromov hyperbolicity delta*. We also give a (2 + epsilon)-approximation algorithm with running time (O) over tilde(epsilon(-1)n(omega)). These are faster than the previous O(n((5+omega)/2))-time algorithm for the exact solution and the O(n((3+omega)/2))-time algorithm for a 2-approximation [Fournier, Ismail and Vigneron 2012], which directly perform (max, min)-product of matrices.

Abstract:In 2016, Dovgoshey et al. introduced a metric on proper subdomains G of Euclidean spaces and studied its connection with several hyperbolic type metrics. In this paper, we consider the Gromov hyperbolicity of and show that there is a natural quasisymmetric homeomorphism between the Euclidean boundary of G and the Gromov boundary of equipped with a visual metric.

Abstract:We introduce a natural notion of mean (or average) distance in the context of compact metric graphs, and study its relation to geometric properties of the graph. We show that it exhibits a striking number of parallels to the reciprocal of the spectral gap of the graph Laplacian with standard vertex conditions: it is maximised among all graphs of fixed length by the path graph (interval), or by the loop in the restricted class of doubly connected graphs, and it is minimised among all graphs of fixed length and number of edges by the equilateral flower graph. We also establish bounds for the correctly scaled product of the spectral gap and the square of the mean distance which depend only on combinatorial, and not metric, features of the graph. This raises the open question whether this product admits absolute upper and lower bounds valid on all compact metric graphs.

Abstract:We present problems and results that combine graph-minors and coarse geometry. For example, we ask whether every geodesic metric space (or graph) without a fat $H$ minor is quasi-isometric to a graph with no $H$ minor, for an arbitrary finite graph $H$. We answer this affirmatively for a few small $H$. We also present a metric analogue of Menger's theorem and Konig's ray theorem. We conjecture metric analogues of the Erdos--Posa Theorem and Halin's grid theorem.

Abstract:We prove that any metric surface (that is, metric space homeomorphic to a 2 -manifold with boundary) with locally finite Hausdorff 2 -measure is the Gromov–Hausdorff limit of polyhedral surfaces with controlled geometry. We use this result, together with the classical uniformization theorem, to prove that any metric surface homeomorphic to the 2 -sphere with finite Hausdorff 2 -measure admits a weakly quasiconformal parametrization by the Riemann sphere, answering a question of Rajala–Wenger. These results have been previously established by the authors under the assumption that the metric surface carries a length metric. As a corollary, we obtain new proofs of the uniformization theorems of Bonk–Kleiner for quasispheres and of Rajala for reciprocal surfaces. Another corollary is a simplification of the definition of a reciprocal surface, which answers a question of Rajala concerning minimal hypotheses under which a metric surface is quasiconformally equivalent to a Euclidean domain.

We propose a model for studying Diophantine approximation in an arbitrary totally bounded metric space where the rationals are replaced with a countable hierarchy of "well‐spread" points, which we refer to as abstract rationals. We prove various Jarník–Besicovitch type dimension bounds and investigate their sharpness.

Abstract:For a metric space $X$ with a compatible measure $\mu$, Genevois and Tessera defined the Scaling Group of $(X,\mu)$ as the subgroup $\Gamma$ of $\mathbb{R}_{>0}$ of positive real numbers $\gamma$ for which there are quasi-isometries of $X$ coarsely scaling $\mu$ by a factor of $\gamma$. We show that for any finitely generated subgroup $\Gamma$ of $\mathbb{R}_{>0}$ there exists a space $N_\Gamma$, bi-Lipschitz equivalent to a graph of finite degree, with scaling group $\Gamma$.

Metric dimensions of generalized Sierpiński graphs over squares

Abstract:Metric dimension is a valuable parameter that helps address problems related to network design, localization, and information retrieval by identifying the minimum number of landmarks required to uniquely determine distances between vertices in a graph. Generalized Sierpiński graphs represent a captivating class of fractal-inspired networks that have gained prominence in various scientific disciplines and practical applications. Their fractal nature has also found relevance in antenna design, image compression, and the study of porous materials. The hypercube is a prevalent interconnection network architecture known for its symmetry, vertex transitivity, regularity, recursive structure, high connectedness, and simple routing. Various variations of hypercubes have emerged in literature to meet the demands of practical applications. Sometimes, they are the spanning subgraphs of it. This study examines the generalized Sierpiński graphs over $C_4$, which are spanning subgraphs of hypercubes and determines the metric dimension and their variants. This is in contrast to hypercubes, where these properties are inherently complicated. Along the way, the role of twin vertices in the theory of metric dimensions is further elaborated.

Abstract:The Gromov-Hausdorff distance ( d G H ) proves to be a useful distance measure between shapes. In order to approximate d G H for X , Y ⊂ R d , we look into its relationship with d H , i s o , the infimum Hausdorff distance under Euclidean isometries. As already known for dimension d ≥ 2 , d H , i s o cannot be bounded above by a constant factor times d G H . For d = 1 , however, we prove that d H , i s o ≤ 5 4 d G H . We also show that the bound is tight. In effect, for X , Y ⊂ R with at most n points, this gives rise to an O ( n log ⁡ n ) -time algorithm to approximate d G H ( X , Y ) with an approximation factor of ( 1 + 1 4 ) .

Abstract:Let $G$ be a group with a metric $\mathrm{d}$ invariant under left and right translations, and let $\bar{\mathbb{D}}_r$ be the ball of radius $r$ around the identity. A $(k,r)$-metric approximate subgroup is a symmetric subset $X$ of $G$ such that the pairwise product set $XX$ is covered by at most $k$ translates of $X\bar{\mathbb{D}}_r$. This notion was introduced in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="math/0601431" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/math/0601431">arXiv:math/0601431</a> along with the version for discrete groups (approximate subgroups). In <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="0909.2190" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/0909.2190">arXiv:0909.2190</a>, it was shown for the discrete case that, at the asymptotic limit of $X$ finite but large, the "approximateness" (or need for more than one translate) can be attributed to a canonically associated Lie group. Here we prove an analogous result in the metric setting, under a certain finite covering assumption on $X$ replacing finiteness. In particular, if $G$ has bounded exponent, we show that any $(k,r)$-metric approximate subgroup is close to a $(1,r')$-metric approximate subgroup for an appropriate $r'$.

Stability and Approximations for Decorated Reeb Spaces

Abstract:Given a map $f:X \to M$ from a topological space $X$ to a metric space $M$, a decorated Reeb space consists of the Reeb space, together with an attribution function whose values recover geometric information lost during the construction of the Reeb space. For example, when $M=\mathbb{R}$ is the real line, the Reeb space is the well-known Reeb graph, and the attributions may consist of persistence diagrams summarizing the level set topology of $f$. In this paper, we introduce decorated Reeb spaces in various flavors and prove that our constructions are Gromov-Hausdorff stable. We also provide results on approximating decorated Reeb spaces from finite samples and leverage these to develop a computational framework for applying these constructions to point cloud data.

Abstract:A Reeb graph is a graphical representation of a scalar function on a topological space that encodes the topology of the level sets. A Reeb space is a generalization of the Reeb graph to a multiparameter function. In this paper, we propose novel constructions of Reeb graphs and Reeb spaces that incorporate the use of a measure. Specifically, we introduce measure-theoretic Reeb graphs and Reeb spaces when the domain or the range is modeled as a metric measure space (i.e.,~a metric space equipped with a measure). Our main goal is to enhance the robustness of the Reeb graph and Reeb space in representing the topological features of a scalar field while accounting for the distribution of the measure. We first introduce a Reeb graph with local smoothing and prove its stability with respect to the interleaving distance. We then prove the stability of a Reeb graph of a metric measure space with respect to the measure, defined using the distance to a measure or the kernel distance to a measure, respectively.
