Abstract:We study sympathetic cooling of the radial ion motion in a linear RF trap in mixed barium-ytterbium chains. Barium ions are Doppler-cooled, while ytterbium ions are cooled through their interaction with cold barium ions. We estimate the efficiency of sympathetic cooling by measuring the average occupation quantum numbers, and thus the temperature, of all radial normal modes of motion in the ion chain. The full set of orderings in a chain of two barium and two ytterbium ions have been probed, and we show that the average thermal occupation numbers for all chain configurations strongly depend on the trap aspect ratio. We demonstrate efficient sympathetic cooling of all radial normal modes for the trap aspect ratio of approximately 2.9.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is: in a mixed barium ion (Ba\(^+\)) and ytterbium ion (Yb\(^+\)) chain, how to achieve effective sympathetic cooling, especially the cooling effect in the radial mode. Specifically, the author studied whether, in a mixed - ion chain, by only laser - cooling barium ions, the cooling effect can be effectively transferred to ytterbium ions through Coulomb interaction, thereby achieving a low - temperature state of the entire ion chain. ### Main problems: 1. **Sympathetic cooling efficiency**: In a mixed barium - ytterbium ion chain, how to evaluate and improve the efficiency of sympathetic cooling. 2. **Dependence on the aspect ratio of the trapping well**: Whether and how the effect of sympathetic cooling depends on the aspect ratio of the trapping well. 3. **Radial mode coupling**: The influence of the mass difference between different ion species on the coupling of radial vibration modes, which in turn affects the effect of sympathetic cooling. ### Research background: - Trapped - ion quantum processors of a single species face some challenges, such as the need to maintain the low - temperature state of ions to achieve high - fidelity entanglement - gate operations. - Ion chains of mixed species can avoid these problems by using one ion as a "tool" ion (for cooling and remote entanglement) and another ion as a "logic" ion (for quantum information storage and operation). - The mass difference between barium ions and ytterbium ions is small (about 25%), but even this small mass difference can significantly reduce the radial mode coupling, thus affecting the effect of sympathetic cooling. ### Research methods: - The author estimated the efficiency of sympathetic cooling by measuring the average occupation quantum number of all radial normal modes in a mixed barium - ytterbium ion chain. - The influence of different ion arrangement orders on the sympathetic cooling effect under different aspect ratios of the trapping well was studied. - The results show that when the aspect ratio of the trapping well is about 2.9, efficient sympathetic cooling can be achieved, and the temperatures of all radial normal modes are close to the Doppler cooling limit. ### Conclusions: - Reducing the aspect ratio of the trapping well can significantly improve the efficiency of sympathetic cooling, enabling all radial modes in a mixed barium - ytterbium ion chain to be effectively cooled. - The effect of sympathetic cooling strongly depends on the magnitude of the largest normal - mode component of the trapped ions. - To achieve efficient sympathetic cooling and cross - species quantum - logic - gate operations, it is recommended to use a trapping well with a lower aspect ratio. Through these studies, the author provided important experimental basis and technical guidance for future mixed - ion - chain quantum - computing platforms.
