Abstract:This article consists of two connected parts. In the first part, we study the shift invariant subspaces in certain $\mathcal{P}^2(\mu)$-spaces, which are the closures of analytic polynomials in the Lebesgue spaces $\mathcal{L}^2(\mu)$ defined by a class of measures $\mu$ living on the closed unit disk $\overline{\mathbb{D}}$. The measures $\mu$ which occur in our study have a part on the open disk $\mathbb{D}$ which is radial and decreases at least exponentially fast near the boundary. Our focus is on those shift invariant subspaces which are generated by a bounded function in $H^\infty$. In this context, our results are definitive. We give a characterization of the cyclic singular inner functions by an explicit and readily verifiable condition, and we establish certain permanence properties of non-cyclic ones which are important in the applications. The applications take up the second part of the article. We prove that if a function $g \in \mathcal{L}^1(\mathbb{T})$ on the unit circle $\mathbb{T}$ has a Cauchy transform with Taylor coefficients of order $\mathcal{O}\big(\exp(-c \sqrt{n})\big)$ for some $c > 0$, then the set $U = \{x \in \mathbb{T} : |g(x)| > 0 \}$ is essentially open and $\log |g|$ is locally integrable on $U$. We establish also a simple characterization of analytic functions $b: \mathbb{D} \to \mathbb{D}$ with the property that the de Branges-Rovnyak space $\mathcal{H}(b)$ contains a dense subset of functions which, in a sense, just barely fail to have an analytic continuation to a disk of radius larger than 1. We indicate how close our results are to being optimal and pose a few questions.

Abstract:The classes of -smooth domains bounded by a contour that is Lyapunov outside any neighborhood of its certain point such that the derivative of a conformal mapping onto the unit disk is continuous at this point are described. The description is given in terms of some spaces for a unit tangent vector on the boundary contour. Corresponding results for piecewise smooth domains are obtained as a consequence.

Abstract:We introduce a continuous domain for function spaces over topological spaces which are not core-compact. Notable examples of such topological spaces include the real line with the upper limit topology, which is used in solution of initial value problems with temporal discretization, and various infinite dimensional Banach spaces which are ubiquitous in functional analysis and solution of partial differential equations. If a topological space $\mathbb{X}$ is not core-compact and $\mathbb{D}$ is a non-singleton bounded-complete domain, the function space $[\mathbb{X} \to \mathbb{D}]$ is not a continuous domain. To construct a continuous domain, we consider a spectral compactification $\mathbb{Y}$ of $\mathbb{X}$ and relate $[\mathbb{X} \to \mathbb{D}]$ with the continuous domain $[\mathbb{Y} \to \mathbb{D}]$ via a Galois connection. This allows us to perform computations in the native structure $[\mathbb{X} \to \mathbb{D}]$ while computable analysis is performed in the continuous domain $[\mathbb{Y} \to \mathbb{D}]$, with the left and right adjoints used for moving between the two function spaces.

Abstract:It is a classical theorem that if a function on the unit circle is integrable, then it is the nontangential limit of a holomorphic function on the open disc (subject to a certain growth condition) if and only if its Fourier coefficients for nonnegative integers are zero. In this article we generalize this result to higher complex dimensions by proving that for an integrable function on the unit sphere, it is a "boundary trace" of a holomorphic function on the open unit ball if and only if two particular families of integral equations are satisfied. To do this, we use the theory of Hardy spaces as well as the invariant Poisson and Cauchy integrals.

Continuous operators from spaces of Lipschitz functions

Abstract:We study the existence of continuous (linear) operators from the Banach spaces $\mbox{Lip}_0(M)$ of Lipschitz functions on infinite metric spaces $M$ vanishing at a distinguished point and from their predual spaces $\mathcal{F}(M)$ onto certain Banach spaces, including $C(K)$-spaces and the spaces $c_0$ and $\ell_1$. For pairs of spaces $\mbox{Lip}_0(M)$ and $C(K)$ we prove that if they are endowed with topologies weaker than the norm topology, then usually no continuous (linear or not) surjection exists between those spaces. It is also showed that if a metric space $M$ contains a bilipschitz copy of the unit sphere $S_{c_0}$ of the space $c_0$, then $\mbox{Lip}_0(M)$ admits a continuous operator onto $\ell_1$ and hence onto $c_0$. Using this, we provide several conditions for a space $M$ implying that $\mbox{Lip}_0(M)$ is not a Grothendieck space. Finally, we obtain a new characterization of the Schur property for Lipschitz-free spaces: a space $\mathcal{F}(M)$ has the Schur property if and only if for every discrete metric space $N$ with cardinality $d(M)$ the spaces $\mathcal{F}(M)$ and $\mathcal{F}(N)$ are weakly sequentially homeomorphic.

Abstract:The art of analysis involves the subtle combination of approximation, inequalities, and geometric intuition as well as being able to work at different scales. With this subtlety in mind, we present this paper in a manner designed for wide accessibility for both advanced undergraduate students and graduate students. The main results include a singular integral for measuring the level sets of a $C^{1,1}$ function mapping from $\mathbb{R}^n$ to $\mathbb{R}$, that is, one whose derivative is Lipschitz continuous. We extend this to measure embedded submanifolds in $\mathbb{R}^2$ that are merely $C^1$ using the distance function and provide an example showing that the measure does not hold for general rectifiable boundaries.

Boundary unique continuation in planar domains by conformal mapping

Abstract:Let $\Omega\subset\mathbb R^2$ be a chord arc domain. We give a simple proof of the the following fact, which is commonly known to be true: a nontrivial harmonic function which vanishes continuously on a relatively open set of the boundary cannot have the norm of the gradient which vanishes on a subset of positive surface measure (arc length). This result is conjectured to be true in higher dimensions by Lin, in Lipschitz domains. Let now $\Omega\subset\mathbb R^2$ be a $C^1$ domain with Dini mean oscillations. We prove that a nontrivial harmonic function which vanishes continuously on a relatively open subset of the boundary $\partial\Omega\cap B_1$ has a finite number of critical points in $\overline\Omega\cap B_{1/2}$. The latter improves some recent results by Kenig and Zhao. Our technique involves a conformal mapping which moves the boundary where the harmonic function vanishes into an interior nodal line of a new harmonic function, after a further reflection. Then, size estimates of the critical set - up to the boundary - of the original harmonic function can be understood in terms of estimates of the \emph{interior} critical set of the new harmonic function and of the critical set - up to the boundary - of the conformal mapping.

We study boundedness in weighted Lebesgue spaces: Sufficient and necessary conditions for boundedness are given. Also, special important particular cases of operators and spaces are considered as examples. We construct identity approximation within the framework of the class of operators under study, and two different approaches are given.

Abstract:We show that a positive operator between $L^p$-spaces is given by integration against a kernel function if and only if the image of each positive function has a lower semi-continuous representative with respect to a suitable topology. This is a consequence of a new characterization of kernel operators on general Banach lattices as those operators whose range can be represented over a fixed countable set of positive vectors. Similar results are shown to hold for operators that merely dominate a non-trivial kernel operator.

Abstract:We study the $\bar\partial$ equation subject to various boundary value conditions on bounded simply connected Lipschitz domains $D\subset\mathbb C$: for the Dirichlet problem with datum in $L^p(bD, \sigma)$, this is simply a restatement of the fact that members of the holomorphic Hardy spaces are uniquely and completely determined by their boundary values. Here we identify the maximal data spaces and obtain estimates in the maximal $p$-range for the Dirichlet, Regularity-for-Dirichlet, Neumann, and Robin boundary conditions for $\bar\partial$.

Abstract:This article addresses the problem of boundary correspondence for a sequence of homeomorphisms that change the capacity of a condenser in a controlled way. To study the overall boundary behavior of these mappings, we introduce some capacity metrics in a sequence of domains with nondegenerate core. Completions with respect to these metrics add to the domains new points called boundary elements. As one of the consequences, we obtain not only sufficient conditions for the global uniform convergence of a sequence of homeomorphisms, but some applications to elasticity theory as well.
