Abstract:We present a method to determine the correlation function of scattering potentials of a random medium. We show that some information about the correlation function of scattering potentials of a random medium can be determined from the far-zone spectral density of the scattered field as the medium is illuminated with a pair of correlated scalar plane light waves. Abstract:The far-zone scattered spectrum of two correlated light waves on scattering from a collection of particles is discussed, and the effects of the distribution characters of particles on the spectral shift of the far-zone scattered field are investigated. It is shown that, when the collection is illuminated with two correlated light waves, the far-zone scattered spectrum may be shifted to a longer or a smaller wavelength, depending on the angle of scattering. It is also shown that the magnitude of the spectral shift is affected by the properties of the pair-structure factor, including the angular width and the angular correlation width. This phenomenon may have potential applications in the determination of the structure information from the measurements of the scattered field.

Abstract:We investigate the inverse scattering problem for statistically homogeneous, isotropic random media under conditions of strong fluctuations of optical wavefields. We present a method for determining the spectral density of the dielectric constant fluctuations in such media from scattering of partially coherent light. The method may find applications to a wide class of turbulent media such as the turbulent atmosphere and certain turbulent plasmas where backscattering and depolarization effects are negligible.

Abstract:We investigate the case when light is scattered by Gaussian-correlated, quasi-homogeneous, anisotropic media. The analytical expression for the cross-spectral density function of the scattered field that is produced by scattering of a polychromatic plane wave incident upon a Gaussian-correlated, quasi-homogeneous, anisotropic medium is derived by use of a tensor method. Numerical examples are given to illustrate the normalized spectral density and the spectral degree of coherence of the field scattered by the anisotropic scatterer in contrast with that scattered by the isotropic scatterer. Abstract:In the analysis of the correlation between intensity fluctuations (CIF) of light waves on scattering from a medium, it is implicitly assumed that the incident field is monochromatic. However, under usual circumstances, the field always has a certain frequency width. We examine the CIF of polychromatic electromagnetic light waves on scattering. It is found, in general, that the frequency components of the CIF may change on scattering from a medium whose dielectric susceptibility is a random function of position. The critical angle at which no frequency shift arises is introduced and the corresponding analytic expression is derived. The result shows that the critical angle is dominated by the physical properties of the medium and the source. Finally, we propose a scaling law for the normalized CIF for the scattering of polychromatic electromagnetic light waves. Our theory can be regarded as the vectorial extension of the scalar theory of Wolf et al.

Abstract:We generalize scattering theory to stochastic electromagnetic light waves. It is shown that when a stochastic electromagnetic light wave is scattered from a medium, the properties of the scattered field can be characterized by a 3 x 3 cross-spectral density matrix. An example of scattering of a spatially coherent electromagnetic light wave from a deterministic medium is discussed. Some interesting phenomena emerge, including the changes of the spectral degree of coherence and of the spectral degree of polarization of the scattered field. (C) 2010 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Although there have been many approaches to inverse problem in the classic theory of potential scattering, they are implicitly confined to the analysis of the scattered electric field, and thus the magnetic counterpart of the scattered wave is ignored, which limits the further application of those approaches to some extent. Here, we propose a new, to the best of our knowledge, technique for an inverse problem within the framework of electromagnetic scattering. This technique aims at reconstructing the correlation function of the scattering potential of a random medium through measuring the electromagnetic momentum flow of the scattered field in the far zone. As illustrative examples, we use the technique to determine the correlation functions of the scattering potentials of homogeneous, isotropic, and Gaussian-correlated spheres. Our new inversion approach works both microscopically and macroscopically.

Abstract:Within the validity of the first-order Born approximation, we study the spectrum changes generated by the scattering of light with a tunable spectral degree of coherence (SDOC) from a spatially deterministic medium. Before interacting with the medium, a scalar plane wave is incident upon Young's pinholes, which are employed to produce the incident wave with a tunable SDOC. By assuming that both the scattering potential of the medium and the spectrum of incident plane waves obey Gaussian profiles, the spectrum of the scattered field is derived as a linear combination of Fourier transforms of the scattering potentials. Changes in the spectrum of the scattered field are strongly dependent on the scattering angle, the effective radius of the medium, and Young's pinhole parameter. Moreover, red shifts occurring in the scattered field can be enhanced by either reducing the scattering angle or increasing the effective radius. The results presented here generalize the previous reports, where the light with prescribed functions of the SDOC scattered from a deterministic medium was considered.

Abstract:In this review, some recent progress concerning the direct and inverse problems in the theory of light scattering are discussed. The basic theory of light scattering is presented within the accuracy of the first-order Born approximation, and the properties of the scattered field are studied. The scattering medium may be either isotropic or anisotropic, and the incident light wave can be scalar or electromagnetic. In addition, the application of light scattering to the determination of the structure of the scattering medium is discussed. © 2012 Elsevier B.V.

Abstract:This paper concerns the source scattering problems for acoustic wave propagation, which is governed by the two- or three-dimensional stochastic Helmholtz equation. As a source, the electric current density is assumed to be a random function driven by an additive colored noise. Given the random source, the direct problem is to determine the radiated random wave field. The inverse problem is to reconstruct statistical properties of the source from the boundary measurement of the radiated random wave field. In this work, we consider both the direct and inverse problems. We show that the direct problem has a unique mild solution via a constructive proof. Using the mild solution, we derive effective Fredholm integral equations for the inverse problem. A regularized Kaczmarz method is developed by adopting multifrequency scattering data to overcome the challenges of solving the ill-posed and large scale integral equations. Numerical experiments are presented to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed method. The framework and methodology developed here are expected to be applicable to a wide range of stochastic inverse source problems.

Abstract:This article presents a new approach to analytically compute high-frequency (HF) electromagnetic (EM) scattering from an arbitrary undulating rough surface according to the statistical characteristics of its geometric fluctuation. The integral expression of the scattering coefficient is derived from Kirchhoff approximation (KA) and extended to arbitrary spectra. Two methods are presented to calculate the integral: 1) the discrete Fourier transforming method based on the autocorrelation function (ACF) (KAC) and 2) the convolution method based on the power spectrum density function (KAW). For some analytically expressed spectra, the scattering coefficients can be calculated directly by the KAW and KAC methods according to its power spectrum density (PSD). The analytical expressions of classical KA for Gaussian and exponential spectrum are used to validate the proposed methods. For the case of unknown undulation height spectra of rough surfaces, the ACF is statistically calculated first, and then the KAC and KAW methods are used to calculate the average scattering coefficients numerically. Moreover, the numerical results show that the KAW method takes up more memory to retain enough energy of the ACF for accurate scattering coefficients. The two new methods are effective in the range of $\theta _{i} $ from 0° to 45° and have broad application prospects for real scenarios.

Abstract:The far-zone scattered spectrum of a polychromatic light wave on scattering from a semisoft boundary medium is discussed. It is shown that spectral changes and spectral switches can be produced in the scattered field, and the direction at which the spectral switch occurs is closely related to the boundary of the dielectric susceptibility of the scatterer. This phenomenon may provide an approach to determine the boundary of the scatterer by the measurements of the scattered spectrum.

Abstract:The cross-spectral density function of the scattered field that is produced by scattering of a coherent plane light wave incident on a collection of different types of anisotropic particles is derived. We show the phenomena of interference of the fields scattered by each of the particles in the system. Numerical results indicate that the information about the shape, the distance, and the relative orientation of the particles may be obtained from far-zone measurements of the scattered field. Abstract:Valid within the accuracy of the first-order Born approximation, we obtain the analytical expressions of the three-dimensional spatial Fourier transforms, which show the reciprocity relations for the scattering of a polychromatic plane wave incident upon a Gaussian-correlated, quasi-homogeneous, anisotropic scatterer. We find that the spectral degree of coherence of the scattered field is only related with the effective radius of the scatterer and the normalized spectral density of the scattered field is only related with the correlation length of the scatterer.

Abstract:The scattering of scalar light wave from a random medium with a. correlation function of Gaussian Schell model distribution is studied. Abstract:We consider scattering of stochastic scalar fields on deterministic as well as on random media, occupying a finite domain. The scattering is characterized by a generalized scattering matrix which transforms the angular correlation function of the incident field into the angular correlation function of the scattered field. Within the accuracy of the first Born approximation this matrix can be expressed in a simple manner in terms of the scattering potential of the scatterer. Apart from determining the angular distribution of the spectral intensity of the scattered field, the scattering matrix makes it possible also to determine the changes in the state of coherence of the field produced on scattering.

Abstract:We derived analytical expressions for the correlation of intensity fluctuations of a partially coherent Gaussian Schell-model plane-wave pulse scattered by deterministic and random media. Our results extend the study of correlation of intensity fluctuations at two space points for scattered stationary fields to that at two time points for scattered non-stationary fields.
Inverse random potential scattering for the polyharmonic wave equation using far-field patterns

Abstract:This paper addresses the inverse scattering problem of a random potential associated with the polyharmonic wave equation in two and three dimensions. The random potential is represented as a centered complex-valued generalized microlocally isotropic Gaussian random field, where its covariance and relation operators are characterized as conventional pseudo-differential operators. Regarding the direct scattering problem, the well-posedness is established in the distribution sense for sufficiently large wavenumbers through analysis of the corresponding Lippmann--Schwinger integral equation. Furthermore, in the context of the inverse scattering problem, the uniqueness is attained in recovering the microlocal strengths of both the covariance and relation operators of the random potential. Notably, this is accomplished with only a single realization of the backscattering far-field patterns averaged over the high-frequency band.
