Abstract:The previously introduced Modular Ontology Modeling methodology (MOMo) attempts to mimic the human analogical process by using modular patterns to assemble more complex concepts. To support this, MOMo organizes organizes ontology design patterns into design libraries, which are programmatically queryable, to support accelerated ontology development, for both human and automated processes. However, a major bottleneck to large-scale deployment of MOMo is the (to-date) limited availability of ready-to-use ontology design patterns. At the same time, Large Language Models have quickly become a source of common knowledge and, in some cases, replacing search engines for questions. In this paper, we thus present a collection of 104 ontology design patterns representing often occurring nouns, curated from the common-sense knowledge available in LLMs, organized into a fully-annotated modular ontology design library ready for use with MOMo.

Abstract:Ontology design for complex applications is quite a challenge. The quality of an ontology is highly dependent upon the capabilities of designers, and the collaborative design process is hampered by the difficulty of balancing the viewpoints of different designers. In this paper, we present a granular view of ontology: ontologies are granular, ontologies are granular approximations of conceptualizations and conceptual-relation granules of an ontology are ordered tuples. We then propose a corresponding granular ontology design approach. In our granular ontology design approach, the unified granular cognition level and hierarchies of sub-concepts are initialized before ontological terms are designed in detail, which reduces the subjective effects of the capabilities of designers. Our approach also introduces the idea of optimization to choose an optimal subset, which can best approximate the real concept domain, from the knowledge rule set presented by different domain experts. The optimal subset is chosen on the basis of the principle of granular ontology knowledge structure. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

An integration method based on structure-semantics-specific product knowledge modular ontology was proposed. In the method, construction of the relation bridge rules, identification of the integration rules and integration implementation were established through structure, semantics and specific levels. Abstract:Because of different expressions is used to describe the product knowledge with the same connotation by different users and designers, it lead to the emergence of a variety of heterogeneous problems. The mapping for the modular ontologies of product knowledge has advantages to solving the problems. At the same time, it can also further improve the accuracy and completeness of acquisition of product knowledge. In the article, based on the description of heterogeneous problems in product knowledge, the structure, semantics and characteristics heterogeneities in modular ontologies of product knowledge are defined. The heterogeneous problems in product knowledge are classified. A mapping process model for modular ontology of product knowledge is given. Abstract:Modern software often uses ontologies as its key component to store data and their relationships. This is different from using an ontology as a stand-alone tool for knowledge sharing and representation. The ontology component needs to work with other software components and needs to evolve as the software evolves. Ontology design has been a research topic for years; however, most of these studies focus on using ontologies as stand-alone applications. This paper studies ontology patterns that can be applied to design ontologies as an integral part of a service-oriented application. The paper first briefly reviews various ontology design issues including a brief survey of existing ontology design patterns. The paper then outlines general principles for using ontologies in software applications, including the needs to incorporate ontology design process as a part of software development processes, design ontologies as a component of an overall software architecture, and use ontologies to enhance software evolution and the role that ontologies can play in software validation. The paper then proposes some common ontology patterns that can be used to design ontologies in service-oriented applications. This is followed by examining two international projects, SENSEI and FCINT, where ontologies are used in service-oriented applications and several ontology design patterns are used. Abstract:Abstract Despite rapid progress, most of the educational technologies today lack a strong instructional design knowledge basis leading to questionable quality of instruction. In addition, a major challenge is to customize these educational technologies for a wide range of customizable instructional designs. Ontologies are one of the pertinent mechanisms to represent instructional design in the literature. However, existing approaches do not support modeling of flexible instructional designs. To address this problem, in this paper, we propose an ontology based framework for systematic modeling of different aspects of instructional design knowledge based on domain patterns. As part of the framework, we present ontologies for modeling goals , instructional processes and instructional material . We demonstrate the ontology framework by presenting instances of the ontology for the large scale case study of adult literacy in India (287 million learners spread across 22 Indian Languages), which requires creation of hundreds of similar but varied e Learning Systems based on flexible instructional designs. The implemented framework is available at http://rice.iiit.ac.in and is transferred to National Literacy Mission Authority of Government of India . The proposed framework could be potentially used for modeling instructional design knowledge for school education, vocational skills and beyond.

Abstract:In order to provide knowledge service more efficiently for product design,a knowledge organization model for product design knowledge based on the modular approach was proposed;a knowledge instance form was used to represent all forms of the product design knowledge,the knowledge instance forms was combined into a knowledge module according to the contents and features of the knowledge instance form and the semantic relations in the domain ontology,all knowledge instance forms and knowledge modules was further organized as a DAG(directed acyclic graph);the product design knowledge could be efficiently and completely queried semantically based on the logical relationships expressed in the DAG.The case study in ornament design shown that the knowledge organization model could be used to organize all the ornament design knowledge efficiently.

Abstract:The unification of statistical (data-driven) and symbolic (knowledge-driven) methods is widely recognised as one of the key challenges of modern AI. Recent years have seen large number of publications on such hybrid neuro-symbolic AI systems. That rapidly growing literature is highly diverse and mostly empirical, and is lacking a unifying view of the large variety of these hybrid systems. In this paper we analyse a large body of recent literature and we propose a set of modular design patterns for such hybrid, neuro-symbolic systems. We are able to describe the architecture of a very large number of hybrid systems by composing only a small set of elementary patterns as building blocks. The main contributions of this paper are: 1) a taxonomically organised vocabulary to describe both processes and data structures used in hybrid systems; 2) a set of 15+ design patterns for hybrid AI systems, organised in a set of elementary patterns and a set of compositional patterns; 3) an application of these design patterns in two realistic use-cases for hybrid AI systems. Our patterns reveal similarities between systems that were not recognised until now. Finally, our design patterns extend and refine Kautz' earlier attempt at categorising neuro-symbolic architectures.

A Named Entity Based Approach to Model Recipes

Abstract:Traditional cooking recipes follow a structure which can be modelled very well if the rules and semantics of the different sections of the recipe text are analyzed and represented accurately. We propose a structure that can accurately represent the recipe as well as a pipeline to infer the best representation of the recipe in this uniform structure. The Ingredients section in a recipe typically lists down the ingredients required and corresponding attributes such as quantity, temperature, and processing state. This can be modelled by defining these attributes and their values. The physical entities which make up a recipe can be broadly classified into utensils, ingredients and their combinations that are related by cooking techniques. The instruction section lists down a series of events in which a cooking technique or process is applied upon these utensils and ingredients. We model these relationships in the form of tuples. Thus, using a combination of these methods we model cooking recipe in the dataset RecipeDB to show the efficacy of our method. This mined information model can have several applications which include translating recipes between languages, determining similarity between recipes, generation of novel recipes and estimation of the nutritional profile of recipes. For the purpose of recognition of ingredient attributes, we train the Named Entity Relationship (NER) models and analyze the inferences with the help of K-Means clustering. Our model presented with an F1 score of 0.95 across all datasets. We use a similar NER tagging model for labelling cooking techniques (F1 score = 0.88) and utensils (F1 score = 0.90) within the instructions section. Finally, we determine the temporal sequence of relationships between ingredients, utensils and cooking techniques for modeling the instruction steps.

Abstract:Interoperability issues concerning observational data have gained attention in recent times. Automated data integration is important when it comes to the scientific analysis of observational data from different sources. However, it is hampered by various data interoperability issues. We focus exclusively on semantic interoperability issues for observational characteristics. We propose a use-case-driven approach to identify general classes of interoperability issues. In this paper, this is exemplarily done for the use-case of citizen science fireball observations. We derive key concepts for the identified interoperability issues that are generalizable to observational data in other fields of science. These key concepts contain several modeling challenges, and we broadly describe each modeling challenges associated with its interoperability issue. We believe, that addressing these challenges with a set of ontology design patterns will be an effective means for unified semantic modeling, paving the way for a unified approach for resolving interoperability issues in observational data. We demonstrate this with one design pattern, highlighting the importance and need for ontology design patterns for observational data, and leave the remaining patterns to future work. Our paper thus describes interoperability issues along with modeling challenges as a starting point for developing a set of extensible and reusable design patterns.

A topological analysis of the space of recipes

Abstract:In recent years, the use of data-driven methods has provided insights into underlying patterns and principles behind culinary recipes. In this exploratory work, we introduce the use of topological data analysis, especially persistent homology, in order to study the space of culinary recipes. In particular, persistent homology analysis provides a set of recipes surrounding the multiscale "holes" in the space of existing recipes. We then propose a method to generate novel ingredient combinations using combinatorial optimization on this topological information. We made biscuits using the novel ingredient combinations, which were confirmed to be acceptable enough by a sensory evaluation study. Our findings indicate that topological data analysis has the potential for providing new tools and insights in the study of culinary recipes.

Abstract:An ontology-based knowledge service model was proposed by analyzing the characteristics of innovation design process of ornament in order to reuse existed ornament design knowledge rapidly and effectively during the process. Then several key techniques for the model were researched. A process ontology and its requirement model about ornament products were established by improving the four-group model of traditional ontology. The mapping program was triggered to execute by capturing designer's behaviors based on the rules of ontology mapping, and design knowledge was exhibited on clients. Then the knowledge service for innovation design process of ornament was implemented.

Abstract:People often value the sensual, celebratory, and health aspects of food, but behind this experience exists many other value-laden agricultural production, distribution, manufacturing, and physiological processes that support or undermine a healthy population and a sustainable future. The complexity of such processes is evident in both every-day food preparation of recipes and in industrial food manufacturing, packaging and storage, each of which depends critically on human or machine agents, chemical or organismal ingredient references, and the explicit instructions and implicit procedures held in formulations or recipes. An integrated ontology landscape does not yet exist to cover all the entities at work in this farm to fork journey. It seems necessary to construct such a vision by reusing expert-curated fit-to-purpose ontology subdomains and their relationship, material, and more abstract organization and role entities. The challenge is to make this merger be, by analogy, one language, rather than nouns and verbs from a dozen or more dialects which cannot be used directly in statements about some aspect of the farm to fork journey without expensive translation or substantial dialect education in order to understand a particular text or domain of knowledge. This work focuses on the ontology components – object and data properties and annotations – needed to model food processes or more general process modelling within the context of the Open Biological and Biomedical Ontology Foundry and congruent ontologies. Ideally these components can be brought together in a general process ontology that can be specialized not only for the food domain but for carrying out other protocols as well. Many operations involved in food identification, preparation, transportation and storage – shaking, boiling, mixing, freezing, labeling, shipping – are actually common to activities from manufacturing and laboratory work to local or home food preparation.

Abstract:Design patterns have received a lot of attention lately, especially in the object-oriented community. According to IEC61499. Function Block (FB) is considerably similar to object. To reduce the time and cost of system engineering, a suitable design pattern based on the generic Model-View-Controller (MVC) framework and ideas set out in IEC61499, which can be used in the design of Holonic Manufacturing System (HMS), is presented. The differences between the proposed framework and the classical MVC framework are identified. The corresponding engineering methodology that takes maximum advantage of the highly visual nature of the proposed IEC61499-based MVC framework is addressed. The holonic control system design of a simple assembly station is described as an illustrative example, highlighting the advantages of the proposed design pattern. which shows promise for improving manufacturing system performance while facilitating the development process.

Abstract:Domain-specific constraint patterns are introduced, which form the counterpart to design patterns in software engineering for the constraint programming setting. These patterns describe the expert knowledge and best-practice solution to recurring problems and include example implementations. We aim to reach a stage where, for common problems, the modelling process consists of simply picking the applicable patterns from a library of patterns and combining them in a model. This vastly simplifies the modelling process and makes the models simple to adapt. By making the patterns domain-specific we can further include problem-specific modelling ideas, including specific global constraints and search strategies that are known for the problem, into the pattern description. This ensures that the model we obtain from patterns is not only correct but also of high quality. We introduce domain-specific constraint patterns on the example of job shop and flow shop, discuss their advantages and show how the occurrence of patterns can automatically be checked in an event log.

Abstract:The AI community has embraced multi-sensory or multi-modal approaches to advance this generation of AI models to resemble expected intelligent understanding. Combining language and imagery represents a familiar method for specific tasks like image captioning or generation from descriptions. This paper compares these monolithic approaches to a lightweight and specialized method based on employing image models to label objects, then serially submitting this resulting object list to a large language model (LLM). This use of multiple Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) enables better than 95% mean average precision for correct object lists, which serve as input to the latest Open AI text generator (GPT-4). To demonstrate the API as a modular alternative, we solve the problem of a user taking a picture of ingredients available in a refrigerator, then generating novel recipe cards tailored to complex constraints on cost, preparation time, dietary restrictions, portion sizes, and multiple meal plans. The research concludes that monolithic multimodal models currently lack the coherent memory to maintain context and format for this task and that until recently, the language models like GPT-2/3 struggled to format similar problems without degenerating into repetitive or non-sensical combinations of ingredients. For the first time, an AI chef or cook seems not only possible but offers some enhanced capabilities to augment human recipe libraries in pragmatic ways. The work generates a 100-page recipe book featuring the thirty top ingredients using over 2000 refrigerator images as initializing lists.

Abstract:Developing ontologies can be expensive, time-consuming, as well as difficult to develop and maintain. This is especially true for more expressive and/or larger ontologies. Some ontologies are, however, relatively repetitive, reusing design patterns; building these with both generic and bespoke patterns should reduce duplication and increase regularity which in turn should impact on the cost of development. Here we report on the usage of patterns applied to two biomedical ontologies: firstly a novel ontology for karyotypes which has been built ground-up using a pattern based approach; and, secondly, our initial refactoring of the SIO ontology to make explicit use of patterns at development time. To enable this, we use the Tawny-OWL library which enables full-programmatic development of ontologies. We show how this approach can generate large numbers of classes from much simpler data structures which is highly beneficial within biomedical ontology engineering.
