Abstract:In this article we introduce a higher dimensional analogue of Engel structure, motivated by the Cartan prolongation of contact manifolds. We study the stability of such structure, generalizing the Gray-type stability for Engel manifolds.

Abstract:We study the geometry of Engel structures, which are 2-plane fields on 4-manifolds satisfying a generic condition, that are compatible with other geometric structures. A complex Engel structure is an Engel 2-plane field on a complex surface for which the 2-planes are complex lines. We solve the equivalence problems for complex Engel structures and use the resulting structure equations to classify homogeneous complex Engel structures. This allows us to determine all compact, homogeneous examples. Compact manifolds that support homogeneous complex Engel structures are diffeomorphic to $S^1\times SU(2)$ or quotients of $\mathbb{C}^2$, $S^1\times SU(2)$, $S^1\times G$ or $H$ by co-compact lattices, where $G$ is the connected and simply-connected Lie group with Lie algebra $\mathfrak{sl}_2(\mathbb{R})$ and $H$ is a solvable Lie group.

Abstract:We apply spectral sequences to derive both an obstruction to the existence of n n -fold prolongations and a topological classification. Prolongations have been used in the literature in an attempt to prove that every Engel structure on M × S 1 M\times \mathbb {S}^1 with characteristic line field tangent to the fibers is determined by the contact structure induced on a cross section and the twisting of the Engel structure along the fibers. Our results show that this statement needs some modification: to classify the diffeomorphism type of the Engel structure, we additionally have to fix a class in the first cohomology of M M .

Abstract:This paper contributes to the study of Engel structures and their classification. The main result introduces the notion of a loose family of Engel structures and shows that two such families are Engel homotopic if and only if they are formally homotopic. This implies a complete -principle when auxiliary data is fixed. As a corollary, we show that Lorentz and orientable Cartan prolongations are classified up to homotopy by their formal data.

Abstract:A contact twisted cubic structure (M,C,S) is a 5-dimensional manifold M together with a contact distribution C and a bundle S of twisted cubics that is compatible with the conformal symplectic form on C. In Engel's classical work, the Lie algebra of the exceptional Lie group G_2 was realized as the symmetry algebra of the most symmetric contact twisted cubic structure; we thus refer to this one as the contact Engel structure. In the present paper we equip the contact Engel structure with a smooth section s: M-> S that `marks' a point in each twisted cubic. We study the local geometry of the resulting structures (M,C,S,s), which we call marked contact Engel structures. Equivalently, our study can be viewed as a study of foliations of M by curves whose tangent directions are everywhere contained in S. We provide a complete set of local invariants of marked contact Engel structures, we classify all homogeneous models with symmetry groups of dimension greater than 5, and we prove an analogue of the classical Kerr theorem from relativity.

Abstract:We study integrability of generalized almost contact structures, and find conditions under which the main associated maximal isotropic vector bundles form Lie bialgebroids. These conditions differentiate the concept of generalized contact structures from a counterpart of generalized complex structures on odd-dimensional manifolds. We name the latter strong generalized contact structures. Using a Boothby-Wang construction bridging symplectic structures and contact structures, we find examples to demonstrate that, within the category of generalized contact structures, classical contact structures have non-trivial deformations. Using deformation theory of Lie bialgebroids, we construct new families of strong generalized contact structures on the three-dimensional Heisenberg group and its co-compact quotients.

Abstract:We call two Engel structures isotopic if they are homotopic through Engel structures by a homotopy that fixes the characteristic line field. In the present paper we define an isotopy invariant of Engel structures on oriented circle bundles over closed oriented three-manifolds and apply it to give an isotopy classification of Engel structures on circle bundles with characteristic line field tangent to the fibers.
Partial AHS-Structures, their Cartan description and partial BGG sequences

Abstract:G-structures and Cartan geometries are two major approaches to the description of geometric structures (in the sense of differential geometry) on manifolds of some fixed dimension $n$. We show that both descriptions naturally extend to the setting of manifolds of dimension $\geq n$ which are endowed with a distinguished involutive distribution $F$ of rank $n$. The resulting ``partial'' structures are most naturally interpreted as smooth families of standard G-structures or Cartan geometries on the leaves of the foliation defined by $F$. We prove that for the special class of AHS-structures (also known as $|1|$-graded parabolic geometries) the construction of a canonical Cartan geometry associated to a G-structure extends to this general setting. As an application, we prove that for partial AHS-structures there is an analog of the machinery of BGG sequences. This constructs sequences of differential operators of arbitrarily high order intrinsic to the structures. Under appropriate flatness conditions, these sequence are fine resolutions of sheaves which locally can be realized as pullbacks of sheaves on local leaf spaces for the foliation defined by $F$.

Ding stability and Kähler-Einstein metrics on manifolds with big anticanonical class

Abstract:We introduce a notion of uniform Ding stability for a projective manifold with big anticanonical class, and prove that the existence of a unique Kähler-Einstein metric on such a manifold implies uniform Ding stability. The main new techniques are to develop a general theory of Deligne functionals - and corresponding slope formulas - for singular metrics, and to prove a slope formula for the Ding functional in the big setting. This extends work of Berman in the Fano situation, when the anticanonical class is actually ample, and proves one direction of the analogue of the Yau-Tian-Donaldson conjecture in this setting. We also speculate about the relevance of uniform Ding stability and K-stability to moduli in the big setting.

An analytic version of stable arithmetic regularity

Abstract:We prove a structure theorem for stable functions on amenable groups, which extends the arithmetic regularity lemma for stable subsets of finite groups. Given a group $G$, a function $f\colon G\to [-1,1]$ is called stable if the binary function $f(x\cdot y)$ is stable in the sense of continuous logic. Roughly speaking, our main result says that if $G$ is amenable, then any stable function on $G$ is almost constant on all translates of a unitary Bohr neighborhood in $G$ of bounded complexity. The proof uses ingredients from topological dynamics and continuous model theory. We also prove several applications which generalize results in arithmetic combinatorics to nonabelian groups.

Abstract:We prove that, if $C$ is a smooth projective curve over the complex numbers, and $E$ is a stable vector bundle on $C$ whose slope does not lie in the interval $[-1,n-1]$, then the associated tautological bundle $E^{[n]}$ on the symmetric product $C^{(n)}$ is again stable. Also, if $E$ is semi-stable and its slope does not lie in the interval $(-1,n-1)$, then $E^{[n]}$ is semi-stable.

Abstract:A stabilization operation is defined for codimension $2$ contact submanifolds in $\dim \geq 5$ contact manifolds $(M, \xi)$. The definition is such that (1) a given $(M, \xi)$ is overtwisted iff its standard transverse unknot is stabilized and (2) transverse stabilization preserves the formal contact isotopy class and intrinsic contact structure of a link. We prove that many transverse links are non-simple.

Abstract:We show that the metric on a full component of Stab(풞) for which the central charges factor through a finite rank quotient of the Grothendieck group K(풞) is complete. As an example, we compute the metric on the space of numerical stability conditions on a smooth complex projective curve of genus greater than 1, and show that the quotient Stab(풞)/ℂ by the natural action of the complex numbers is isometric to the upper half‐plane equipped with half the hyperbolic metric. We also make two observations about the way in which the heart changes as we move through the space of stability conditions. First, hearts of stability conditions in the same component of the space of stability conditions are related by finite sequences of tilts. Secondly, if each of a convergent sequence of stability conditions has the same heart, then the heart of the limiting stability condition is obtained from this by a right tilt.

Abstract:In this paper, we focus on three main objectives related to Hardy-type inequalities on Cartan-Hadamard manifolds. Firstly, we explore critical Hardy-type inequalities that contain logarithmic terms, highlighting their significance. Secondly, we examine the stability of both critical and subcritical cases of the Hardy inequality. Lastly, we establish two weighted Hardy-type inequalities where singularities appear at the origin as well as boundary and we discuss their implications for higher-order operators. Our results improve upon previous findings and also present new higher-order versions of these inequalities as additional outcomes.

Abstract:We give applications of equivariant Gromov–Hausdorff convergence in various contexts. Namely, using equivariant Gromov–Hausdorff convergence, we prove a stability result in the setting of compact finite‐dimensional Alexandrov spaces. Moreover, we introduce the notion of an almost commutative diagram and show that its use simplifies both exposition and argument.

Entropy Stability for products of negatively curved symmetric spaces

Abstract:Let $(M,g_0)$ be a closed oriented $n$-manifold that is locally isometric to a product $(X^{n_1}_1,g_1)\times\cdots (X_k^{n_k},g_k)$, where each $n_i\ge 3,$ and each factor $(X_i^{n_i},g_i)$ is a negatively curved symmetric space. We study the stability of minimal entropy rigidity for such manifolds. Specifically, we consider whether an entropy-minimizing sequence $(M,g_i)$ converges to the model space in the measured Gromov-Hausdorff sense after removing negligible subsets. Previously, Song [Son23] established this type of stability for negatively curved symmetric spaces, where both the $n$-volume of the removed subsets and the $(n-1)$-volume of their boundaries converge to zero. We construct a counterexample demonstrating that this stronger stability notion does not generally hold in the product case; in particular, the condition that the $(n-1)$-volume of the boundary of removed subsets converges to zero cannot be imposed. Nonetheless, we prove that an entropy-minimizing sequence $(M,g_i)$ converges to the model space after removing subsets whose $n$-volume converges to zero in the measured Gromov-Hausdorff topology. This result provides a weaker form of stability compared to the negatively symmetric case. A key ingredient in establishing this stability is our proof of the intrinsic uniqueness of the spherical Plateau solution for products of negatively curved symmetric spaces, which is of independent interest.

Homology stability for asymptotic monopole moduli spaces

Abstract:We prove homological stability for two different flavours of asymptotic monopole moduli spaces, namely moduli spaces of framed Dirac monopoles and moduli spaces of ideal monopoles. The former are Gibbons-Manton torus bundles over configuration spaces whereas the latter are obtained from them by replacing each circle factor of the fibre with a monopole moduli space by the Borel construction. They form boundary hypersurfaces in a partial compactification of the classical monopole moduli spaces. Our results follow from a general homological stability result for configuration spaces equipped with non-local data.

Abstract:Contact structures, as well as their holomorphic and quaternionic counterparts are the primary examples of strongly bracket generating (or fat) distributions. In this article we associate a numerical invariant to corank $2$ fat distribution on manifolds, referred to as \emph{degree} of the distribution. The real distribution underlying a holomorphic contact structure is of degree $2$. Using Gromov's sheaf theoretic and analytic techniques of $h$-principle, we prove the existence of horizontal immersions of an arbitrary manifold into degree $2$ fat distributions and the quaternionic contact structures. We also study immersions of a contact manifold inducing the given contact structure.

Entropy and stability of hyperbolic manifolds

Abstract:Let $(M,g_0)$ be a closed oriented hyperbolic manifold of dimension at least $3$. By the volume entropy inequality of G. Besson, G. Courtois and S. Gallot, for any Riemannian metric $g$ on $M$ with same volume as $g_0$, its volume entropy $h(g)$ satisfies $h(g)\geq n-1$ with equality only when $g$ is isometric to $g_0$. We show that the hyperbolic metric $g_0$ is stable in the following sense: if $g_i$ is a sequence of Riemaniann metrics on $M$ of same volume as $g_0$ and if $h(g_i)$ converges to $n-1$, then there are smooth subsets $Z_i\subset M$ such that both $\mathrm{Vol}(Z_i,g_i)$ and $\mathrm{Area}(\partial Z_i,g_i)$ tend to $0$, and $(M\setminus Z_i,g_i)$ converges to $(M,g_0)$ in the measured Gromov-Hausdorff topology. The proof relies on showing that any spherical Plateau solution for $M$ is intrinsically isomorphic to $(M,\frac{(n-1)^2}{4n} g_0)$.

Abstract:We consider four extended Ricci flow systems---that is, Ricci flow coupled with other geometric flows---and prove dynamical stability of certain classes of stationary solutions of these flows. The systems include Ricci flow coupled with harmonic map flow (studied abstractly and in the context of Ricci flow on warped products), Ricci flow coupled with both harmonic map flow and Yang-Mills flow, and Ricci flow coupled with heat flow for the torsion of a metric-compatible connection. The methods used to prove stability follow a program outlined by Guenther, Isenberg, and Knopf, which uses maximal regularity theory for quasilinear parabolic systems and a result of Simonett.
