Abstract:We reprove a result by Ren and Wei concerning the periodicity of minimizers of a one-dimensional liquid drop model in the neutral case. Our proof works for general boundary conditions and also in the non-neutral case.

Abstract:We consider a variational model of electrified liquid drops, involving competition between surface tension and charge repulsion. Since the natural model happens to be ill-posed, we show that by adding to the perimeter a Willmore-type energy, the problem turns back to be well-posed. We also prove that for small charge the droplets is spherical.

Abstract:We solve explicitly a certain minimization problem for probability measures in one dimension involving an interaction energy that arises in the modelling of aggregation phenomena. We show that in a certain regime minimizers are absolutely continuous with an unbounded density, thereby settling a question that was left open in previous works.

Abstract:Abstract: This paper is concerned with the macroscopic behavior of global energy minimizers in the three-dimensional sharp interface unscreened Ohta–Kawasaki model of diblock copolymer melts. This model is also referred to as the nuclear liquid drop model in the studies of the structure of highly compressed nuclear matter found in the crust of neutron stars, and, more broadly, is a paradigm for energy-driven pattern forming systems inwhich spatial order arises as a result of the competition of short-range attractive and long-range repulsive forces. Herewe investigate the large volume behavior of minimizers in the low volume fraction regime, in which one expects the formation of a periodic lattice of small droplets of the minority phase in a sea of the majority phase. Under periodic boundary conditions, we prove that the considered energy -converges to an energy functional of the limit “homogenized”measure associated with theminority phase consisting of a local linear term and a non-local quadratic term mediated by the Coulomb kernel. As a consequence, asymptotically the mass of the minority phase in a minimizer spreads uniformly across the domain. Similarly, the energy spreads uniformly across the domain aswell, with the limit energy densityminimizing the energy of a single droplet per unit volume. Finally, we prove that in the macroscopic limit the connected components of the minimizers have volumes and diameters that are bounded above and below by universal constants, and that most of them converge to the minimizers of the energy divided by volume for the whole space problem.

Abstract:Existence of minimizers for the Dirac--Fock model in crystals was recently proved by Paturel and Séré and the authors \cite{crystals} by a retraction technique due to Séré \cite{Ser09}. In this paper, inspired by Ghimenti and Lewin's result \cite{ghimenti2009properties} for the periodic Hartree--Fock model, we prove that the Fermi level of any periodic Dirac--Fock minimizer is either empty or totally filled when $\frac{\alpha}{c}\leq C_{\rm cri}$ and $\alpha>0$. Here $c$ is the speed of light, $\alpha$ is the fine structure constant, and $C_{\rm cri}$ is a constant only depending on the number of electrons and on the charge of nuclei per cell. More importantly, we provide an explicit upper bound for $C_{\rm cri}$. Our result implies that any minimizer of the periodic Dirac--Fock model is a projector when $\frac{\alpha}{c}\leq C_{\rm cri}$ and $\alpha>0$. In particular, the non-relativistic regime (i.e., $c\gg1$) and the weak coupling regime (i.e., $0<\alpha\ll1$) are covered. The proof is based on a delicate study of a second-order expansion of the periodic Dirac--Fock functional composed with the retraction used in \cite{crystals}.

Abstract:Using the inflation-deflation symmetry, we have developed a new real-space decimation approach to study the electronic properties of one-dimensional quasiperiodic lattices. The key result is the construction of a compact renormalization group that allows simple calculation of the average Green's function and the average density of states to any degree. The Fibonacci and the generalized Fibonacci lattices are used to demonstrate the method. Numerical results for the average density of states of these lattices show a good agreement with the results obtained by other methods. This confirms the validity and the efficiency of the approach.
Effect of periodic arrays of defects on lattice energy minimizers

Abstract:We consider interaction energies $E_f[L]$ between a point $O\in \mathbb{R}^d$, $d\geq 2$, and a lattice $L$ containing $O$, where the interaction potential $f$ is assumed to be radially symmetric and decaying sufficiently fast at infinity. We investigate the conservation of optimality results for $E_f$ when integer sublattices $k L$ are removed (periodic arrays of vacancies) or substituted (periodic arrays of substitutional defects). We consider separately the non-shifted ($O\in k L$) and shifted ($O\not\in k L$) cases and we derive several general conditions ensuring the (non-)optimality of a universal optimizer among lattices for the new energy including defects. Furthermore, in the case of inverse power laws and Lennard-Jones type potentials, we give necessary and sufficient conditions on non-shifted periodic vacancies or substitutional defects for the conservation of minimality results at fixed density. Different examples of applications are presented, including optimality results for the Kagome lattice and energy comparisons of certain ionic-like structures.

A variational model of charged drops in dielectrically matched binary fluids: the effect of charge discreteness

Abstract:This paper addresses the ill-posedness of the classical Rayleigh variational model of conducting charged liquid drops by incorporating the discreteness of the elementary charges. Introducing the model that describes two immiscible fluids with the same dielectric constant, with a drop of one fluid containing a fixed number of elementary charges together with their solvation spheres, we interpret the equilibrium shape of the drop as a global minimizer of the sum of its surface energy and the electrostatic repulsive energy between the charges under fixed drop volume. For all model parameters, we establish existence of generalized minimizers that consist of at most a finite number of components ``at infinity''. We also give several existence and non-existence results for classical minimizers consisting of only a single component. In particular, we identify an asymptotically sharp threshold for the number of charges to yield existence of minimizers in a regime corresponding to macroscopically large drops containing a large number of charges. The obtained non-trivial threshold is significantly below the corresponding threshold for the Rayleigh model, consistently with the ill-posedness of the latter and demonstrating a particular regularizing effect of the charge discreteness. However, when a minimizer does exist in this regime, it approaches a ball with the charge uniformly distributed on the surface as the number of charges goes to infinity, just as in the Rayleigh model. Finally, we provide an explicit solution for the problem with two charges and a macroscopically large drop.

Saddle points of the energy (or of closely related energies) and solutions of the corresponding time-dependent problem occur naturally in applied problems such as water waves and combustion theory. For such critical points $u$ -- which can be obtained as limits of classical solutions or limits of a singular perturbation problem -- it has been open since [Weiss03] whether the singular set can be large and what equation the measure $\Delta u$ satisfies, except for the case of two dimensions. In the present result we use recent techniques such as a frequency formula for the Bernoulli problem as well as the celebrated Naber-Valtorta procedure to answer this more than 20 year old question in an affirmative way: For a closed class we call variational solutions of the Bernoulli problem, we show that the topological free boundary $\partial \{u > 0\}$ (including degenerate singular points $x$, at which $u(x + r \cdot)/r \rightarrow 0$ as $r\rightarrow 0$) is countably $\mathcal{H}^{n-1}$-rectifiable and has locally finite $\mathcal{H}^{n-1}$-measure, and we identify the measure $\Delta u$ completely. This gives a more precise characterization of the free boundary of $u$ in arbitrary dimension than was previously available even in dimension two. We also show that limits of (not necessarily minimizing) classical solutions as well as limits of critical points of a singularly perturbed energy are variational solutions, so that the result above applies directly to all of them.

Abstract:In this paper we give a quantitative stability result for the discrete interaction energy on the multi-dimensional torus, for the periodic Riesz potential. It states that if the number of particles $N$ is large and the discrete interaction energy is low, then the particle distribution is necessarily close to the uniform distribution (i.e., the continuous energy minimizer) in the Wasserstein-infinity distance. As a consequence, we obtain a quantitative mean field limit of interaction energy minimizers in the Wasserstein-infinity distance. The proof is based on the application of the author's previous joint work with J. Wang on the stability of continuous energy minimizer, together with a new mollification trick for the empirical measure in the case of singular interaction potentials.

The competition between attractive and repulsive forces leads to transitions between parameter regimes, where minimizers exist and where they do not. Abstract:We consider a liquid drop sitting on a rough solid surface at equilibrium, a volume constrained minimizer of the total interfacial energy. The large-scale shape of such a drop strongly depends on the micro-structure of the solid surface. Surface roughness enhances hydrophilicity and hydrophobicity properties of the surface, altering the equilibrium contact angle between the drop and the surface. Our goal is to understand the shape of the drop with fixed small scale roughness. To achieve this, we develop a quantitative description of the drop and its contact line in the context of periodic homogenization theory, building on the qualitative theory of Alberti and DeSimone.

Abstract:By using unbiased continuos-space quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we investigate the ground state properties of a one-dimensional repulsive Fermi gas subjected to a commensurate periodic optical lattice (OL) of arbitrary intensity. The equation of state and the magnetic structure factor are determined as a function of the interaction strength and of the OL intensity. In the weak OL limit, Yang's theory for the energy of a homogeneous Fermi gas is recovered. In the opposite limit (deep OL), we analyze the convergence to the Lieb-Wu theory for the Hubbard model, comparing two approaches to map the continuous-space to the discrete-lattice model: the first is based on (noninteracting) Wannier functions, the second effectively takes into account strong-interaction effects within a parabolic approximation of the OL wells. We find that strong antiferromagnetic correlations emerge in deep OLs, and also in very shallow OLs if the interaction strength approaches the Tonks-Girardeau limit. In deep OLs we find quantitative agreement with density matrix renormalization group calculations for the Hubbard model. The spatial decay of the antiferromagnetic correlations is consistent with quasi long-range order even in shallow OLs, in agreement with previous theories for the half-filled Hubbard model.

Abstract:We present analytical results of fundamental properties of one-dimensional (1D) Hubbard model with a repulsive interaction, ranging from fractional excitations to universal thermodynamics, interaction-driven criticality, correlation functions, Contact susceptibilities and quantum cooling. Using the exact solutions of the Bethe Ansatz equations of the Hubbard model, we first rigorously calculate the gapless spin and charge excitations, exhibiting exotic features of fractionalized spinons and holons. Based on the analysis on the fractional charge and spin excitations, the spin-incoherent Luttinger liquid with only the charge propagation mode is elucidated by the asymptotic of the two-point correlation functions with the help of the conformal field theory. Near quadruple critical point, we then further analytically obtain the thermodynamical properties, dimensionless ratios and scaling functions near quantum phase transitions in terms of chemical potential, magnetic field and interaction. In particular, we determine additivity rules of spin and charge susceptibilities, and derive explicit forms of thermodynamics of spin-incoherent Luttinger liquid. Finally, in order to capture deeper insight into the Mott insulator and interaction driven criticality, we further study the double occupancy and its associated Contact and Contact susceptibilities through which an adiabatic cooling scheme upon the quantum criticality is introduced.

On the energy-minimizing steady states of a thin film equation

Abstract:Steady states of the thin film equation $u_t+[u^3 (u_xxx + \alpha^2 u_x -\sin(x) )]_x=0$ are considered on the periodic domain $\Omega = (-\pi,\pi)$. The equation defines a generalized gradient flow for an energy functional that controls the $H^1$-norm. The main result establishes that there exists for each given mass a unique nonnegative function of minimal energy. This minimizer is symmetric decreasing about $x=0$. For $\alpha<1$ there is a critical value for the mass at which the minimizer has a touchdown zero. If the mass exceeds this value, the minimizer is strictly positive. Otherwise, it is supported on a proper subinterval of the domain and meets the dry region at zero contact angle. A second result explores the relation between strict positivity and exponential convergence for steady states. It is shown that positive minimizers are locally exponentially attractive, while the distance from a steady state with a dry region cannot decay faster than a power law.
