Abstract:In this paper we construct Ulrich bundles of low rank on three-dimensional scrolls (with respect to the tautological line bundle). We pay special attention to the four types of threefold scrolls in $\mathbb{P}^5$ which were classified in [Ott92].

Abstract:We investigate the existence of Ulrich vector bundles on suitable $3$-fold scrolls $X_e$ over Hirzebruch surfaces $\mathbb{F}_e$, for any integer $e \geqslant 0$, which arise as tautological embeddings of projectivization of very-ample vector bundles on $\mathbb{F}_e$ that are uniform in the sense of Brosius and Aprodu--Brinzanescu. We explicitely describe components of moduli spaces of rank $r \geqslant 1$ vector bundles which are Ulrich with respect to the tautological polarization on $X_e$ and whose general point is a slope-stable, indecomposable vector bundle. We moreover determine the dimension of such components, proving also that they are generically smooth. As a direct consequence of these facts, we also compute the Ulrich complexity of any such $X_e$ and give an effective proof of the fact that these $X_e$'s turn out to be geometrically Ulrich wild. At last, the machinery developed for $3$--fold scrolls $X_e$ allows us to deduce Ulrichness results on rank $r \geqslant 1$ vector bundles on $\mathbb{F}_e$, for any $e \geqslant 0$, with respect to a naturally associated (very ample) polarization.

A note on some moduli spaces of Ulrich Bundles

Abstract:We prove that the modular component $\mathcal M(r)$, constructed in the Main Theorem of a former paper of us (published in Adv. Math on 2024), paramatrizing (isomorphism classes of) Ulrich vector bundles of rank $r$ and given Chern classes, on suitable $3$-fold scrolls $X_e$ over Hirzebruch surfaces $\mathbb{F}_{e\geq 0}$, which arise as tautological embeddings of projectivization of very-ample vector bundles on $\mathbb{F}_e$, is generically smooth and unirational. A stronger result holds for the suitable associated moduli space $\mathcal M_{\mathbb F_e}(r)$ of vector bundles of rank $r$ and given Chern classes on $\mathbb{F}_e$, Ulrich w.r.t. the very ample polarization $c_1({\mathcal E}_e) = \mathcal O_{\mathbb F_e}(3, b_e),$ which turns out to be generically smooth, irreducible and unirational.

Abstract:We show that Veronese varieties of dimension $n \ge 4$ do not carry any Ulrich bundles of rank $r \le 3$. In order to prove this, we prove that a Veronese embedding of a complete intersection of dimension $m \ge 4$, which if $m=4$ is either $\mathbb P^4$ or has degree $d \ge 2$ and is very general and not of type $(2), (2,2)$, does not carry any Ulrich bundles of rank $r \le 3$.

Abstract:We prove the existence of Ulrich bundles on cyclic coverings of $\mathbb{P}^n$ of arbitrary degree $d$. Given a relatively Ulrich bundle on a complete intersection subvariety, we construct a relatively Ulrich bundle on the ambient variety. As an application, we prove that there exists a rank $d$ Ulrich bundle on generic cyclic coverings of $\mathbb{P}^2$ of degree $d$ such that the degree of the branch divisor $d \cdot k$ is even. When $d \cdot k$ is odd, we also provide an estimation of the rank of the Ulrich bundle on generic cyclic coverings of $\mathbb{P}^2$.

Abstract:We characterize the existence of an Ulrich vector bundle on a variety $X \subset P^N$ in terms of the existence of a subvariety satisfying some precise conditions. Then we use this fact to prove that a complete intersection of dimension $n \ge 4$, which if $n=4$ is very general and not of type $(2,2)$, does not carry any Ulrich bundles of rank $r \le 3$ unless $n=4, r=2$ and $X$ is a quadric.

Abstract:We investigate a geometric criterion for a smooth curve $C$ of genus $14$ and degree $18$ to be described as the zero locus of sections in an Ulrich bundle of rank $3$ on a del Pezzo threefold $V_5 \subset \mathbb{P}^6$. The main challenge is to read off the Pfaffian quadrics defining $V_5$ from geometric structures of $C$. We find that this problem is related to the existence of a special rank-two vector bundle on $C$ with trivial resonance. It gives a description of the image of the rational map that appeared in a work of Ciliberto-Flamini-Knutsen, for the case of degree $5$ del Pezzo threefolds. From an explicit calculation of the Betti table of such a curve, we also deduce the uniqueness of the del Pezzo threefold containing a given curve.

Abstract:A degree $d$ genus $g$ cover of the complex projective line by a smooth curve $C$ yields a vector bundle on the projective line by pushforward of the structure sheaf. Which bundles are possible? Equivalently, which $\mathbb{P}^{d-2}$-bundles over $\mathbb{P}^1$ contain such covers? (In the language of many previous papers: what are the scrollar invariants of the cover?) We give a complete answer in degree $4$, which exhibits the expected pathologies. We describe a polytope (one per degree) which we propose gives the complete answer for primitive covers, i.e. covers that don't factor through a subcover. We show that all such bundles (for primitive covers) lie in this polytope, and that a ``positive proportion'' of the polytope arises from smooth covers. Moreover, we show the necessity of the primitivity assumption. Finally, we show that the map from the Hurwitz space of smooth covers to the space of bundles is not flat (for $d>3$ and $g \gg_d 0$).

Abstract:We establish a connection between the theory of Ulrich sheaves and $\mathbb{A}^1$-homotopy theory. For instance, we prove that the $\mathbb{A}^1$-degree of a morphism between projective varieties, that is relatively oriented by an Ulrich sheaf, is constant on the target even when it is not $\mathbb{A}^1$-connected. Further if an embedded projective variety is the support of a symmetric Ulrich sheaf of rank one, the $\mathbb{A}^1$-degree of all its linear projections can be read off in an explicit way from the free resolution of the Ulrich sheaf. Finally, we construct an Ulrich sheaf on the secant variety of a curve and use this to define an arithmetic version of Viro's encomplexed writhe for curves in $\mathbb{P}^3$. This can be considered to be an arithmetic analogue of a link invariant.

Abstract:In dimension $n = 2m-2 \geq 4$ adjunction theoretic scrolls over a smooth $m$-fold may not be classical scrolls, due to the existence of divisorial fibers. A $4$-dimensional scroll $(X,L)$ over $\mathbb P^3$ of this type is considered, and the equation of its Hilbert curve $\Gamma$ is determined in two ways, one of which relies on the fact that $(X,L)$ is at the same time a classical scroll over a threefold $Y \not=\mathbb P^3$. It turns out that $\Gamma$ does not perceive divisorial fibers. The equation we obtain also shows that a question raised in a previous article by Beltrametti, Lanteri and Sommese, has negative answer in general for non-classical scrolls over a $3$-fold. More precisely, the answer for $(X,L)$ is negative or positive according to whether $(X,L)$ is regarded as an adjunction theoretic scroll or as a classical scroll; in other words, it is the answer to this question to distinguish between the existence of jumping fibers or not.

Abstract:Let $V$ be a $K$-vector space of dimension $n+1$. In this paper, we focus our attention into the existence of irreducible homogeneous Ulrich bundles on flag manifolds $\FF(p, q,n)$ which parameterizes all chains of linear subspaces $L_{p} \subset L_{q} \subset \PP(V)$ of dimension $p< q$, respectively. We determine all irreducible homogeneous Ulrich bundles on $\FF(0,n-1,n)$ and we prove that there are exactly $2^{n-1}$. Similarly, we prove that $\FF(0,n-2,n)$ and $\FF(1,n-1,n)$ are also the support of irreducible homogeneous Ulrich bundles. On the other hand, we prove that $\FF(0,1,n)$ do not support any irreducible homogeneous Ulrich bundle. We end posing a conjecture concerning the existence of irreducible homogeneous Ulrich bundles on $\FF(p,q,n)$ in terms of $p$ and $q$.

Abstract:We introduce and study a notion of Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity suitable for rational normal scroll surfaces. In this setting we prove analogs of some classical properties. We prove splitting criteria for coherent sheaves and a characterization of Ulrich bundles. Finally we study logarithmic bundles associated to arrangements of lines and rational curves.

Abstract:This paper provides some technical results needed in "Formalism for Relative Gromov-Witten Invariants." We study line-bundles on the moduli stacks of relative stable and rubber maps that are used to define relative Gromov-Witten invariants in the sense of J. Li. Relations between these line-bundles yield degeneration formulae. In addition we prove a technical result called the Trivial Cylinders Theorem.

Abstract:This paper studies the Ulrich property of homogeneous vector bundles on rational homogenous varieties. We provide a criterion for an initialized irreducible homogeneous vector bundle on a rational homogeneous variety with any Picard number to be Ulrich with respect to any polarizations. This criterion extends Fonarev's result, which applies to rational homogeneous varieties with Picard number one. As an application, we show that rational homogeneous varieties with Picard number at least two of certain exceptional algebraic groups do not admit such homogeneous Ulrich bundles with respect to the minimal ample class.

A classification of complex rank 3 vector bundles on complex projective 5-space

Abstract:Given integers $a_1,a_2,a_3$, there is a complex rank $3$ topological bundle on $\mathbb CP^5$ with $i$-th Chern class equal to $a_i$ if and only if $a_1,a_2,a_3$ satisfy the Schwarzenberger condition. Provided that the Schwarzenberger condition is satisfied, we prove that the number of isomorphism classes of rank $3$ bundles $V$ on $\mathbb C P^5$ with $c_i(V)=a_i$ is equal to $3$ if $a_1$ and $a_2$ are both divisible by $3$ and equal to $1$ otherwise. This shows that Chern classes are incomplete invariants of topological rank $3$ bundles on $\mathbb CP^5$. To address this problem, we produce a universal class in the $tmf$-cohomology of a Thom spectrum related to $BU(3)$, where $tmf$ denotes topological modular forms localized at $3$. From this class and orientation data, we construct a $\mathbb Z/3$-valued invariant of the bundles of interest and prove that our invariant separates distinct bundles with the same Chern classes.
